There was a 7,000 stream swing in its favour on Spotify last week (that's the whole week, not 7 days of 7,000s), so I suspect it has once again been a very close margin, one that you'd think would flip unless something drastic happens in the next couple of days. I'll admit I'm always suspicious of potential splash back from US campaigns when songs are still yet to convincingly peak there. Ella Langley could perhaps push for top 3 next week as her album release is providing a handy buffer, and maybe she just keeps going from there. Otherwise it's a very slow week with most of the activity devoted to exposing the quirks of a chart that eliminates anything over 2 years old, which is that all the old but not that old singles are making up the numbers at the bottom of the chart. "Espresso" and "Carry You Home" are not long for this world, and I half expected "Good Luck, Babe!" to sneak back in for what would be its last week. In what could be considered a classic ARIA Chart moment, Malcolm Todd's song "Earrings" probably did enough to make the top 50 this week, which would have been the last week before it became too old for the chart. I'd have liked to see what ARIA might do in that case though I suspect it would just get 2 months on. My hypothesis that an accurate chart would actually get a similar amount of new entries to this version of it is gaining some fruit. I didn't mention it before but Ella Langley's "weren't for the wind" is another fairly old song that belatedly got added in, likely the only song we're getting inserted into the chart like this is 18 months old. "E85" by Don Toliver has been top 50 on Spotify for 6 weeks and potentially could be his highest charting solo entry if allowed on, also White Noise Radiance just cracked the top 10 for the first time last night. Olivia Dean has the #1 album for [I click onto the previous page] 11 weeks now. Local singer Peach PRC has entered the Troye Sivan zone by previously reaching #1 with an EP but not being able to do so with an actual album. Troye Sivan escaped this zone in 2023 so there's a light at the end of the tunnel perhaps. Dermot Kennedy isn't really a presence in the charts at all here outside of that one MEDUZA collab, but he has scored a second top 20 album this week. I'll admit I'm very out of the loop on how Canada's Angine de Poitrine have turned up relatively high. Apparently it's the kind of virality that gets everyone to rush to the iTunes store because they've been selling a lot of digital downloads, and just so happen to have a new EP out now to capitalise. Thundercat gets his highest ever charting entry landing just ahead of U2's new EP.

I would not necessarily settle into this as the new standard going forward. It's possible that the Easter weekend has pushed us back to the older and more familiar, so after what would have been a very close race to #1 this week, it's very possible that "Man I Need" will just inch back in front next week. We have an Australian song in the top 5. The last time this happened was with The Kid LAROI's "THOUSAND MILES". Potentially proving persistence, Dave is back to #8 after first getting there 10 weeks ago, while Ella Langley has a first ever top 10 hit, and a new top 50 entry to boot. RAYE also has another top 50 entry, Hans Zimmer is a slow clue reader on Jeopardy! and I wish they'd stop getting him for it, someone has to say it. (I occasionally have had, and will continue to have things to say about Ye's back catalogue on my blog this year). BTS hold at #1 for a second week in a row. This isn't the first time they've done this, as "Map of the Soul - 7" also managed two weeks at the top. You'd have to think Olivia Dean could get back next week though. RAYE charts a top 50 album for the first time ever at #6. Robyn is also seeing a new career high this week at #12, though I suspect she did better when she got to #14 with her Röyksopp collaboration when the chart wasn't rife with omissions. Courtney Barnett has made the top 5 four times previously but she misses the top 5 for the first time ever and lands at #19. I don't know if everyone is aware that Flea is half-Australian (he was born in Melbourne), but he's charting for the first time with a solo album. Central Cee got to #2 with his album last year but his EP lands at a more reserved #26. I did not realise Slayyyter had enough fanfare to get even close to charting, but it's a first time for her obviously. As we prepare for Gather Round where every team in the AFL plays in or around Adelaide, Yeat gets his highest charting album ever with "ADL". Bluey is less fond of Aussie rules despite being made at the home of the back to back reigning premiers, but now she's got an orchestra. Charlie Puth is on a bit of a comedown after multiple top 10 albums and Tom Misch charts for the first time.

It's been a long time but I've got pretty much every chart on spreadsheets from over a decade ago. I believe all the ARIA Reports from said era are accessible online though I forget the process now.

It happened with "End of Beginning" as it was being allowed a grace period. Looks like the same is happening for Milky and it'll be removed from the chart in a few weeks, given that it's inherited the old chart run. Worth noting though that despite the low peak, it was a persistent song on the chart. 50-47-57-60-63-70-63-69-68-66-65-57-49-50-60-60-62-62-64-78-93-100 in an era when it wasn't common to last more than a few months.

5 weeks behind. Arguably an asterisk to this because Tones and I lost a week to Mariah Carey, but Olivia Dean didn't, merely because she wasn't allowed on the chart this time around.

It's always worth reminding that it actually spent 8 weeks at #2 (plus another week where it was merely behind every song on "The Life of a Showgirl"), so it has really done the hard yards to be the longest running #1 hit of all time. It probably won't get there though. We've got a serious contender arriving to stop Olivia Dean and it's Olivia Dean. "Rein Me In" made a big stride towards the top spot and I suspect it was very close. The margin has only slimmed so far this week so it looks like the reign is over, long live "Rein". BTS's new album sees them score their second highest charting single to date ("Dynamite" reached #2). Actually, BTS have nearly all the new entries to themselves this week, aside from Sienna Spiro scoring a second entry she very nearly had last week. It's otherwise a week of Luke Combs getting his singles back in off the back of the album. I once again suspect "Babydoll" could have made the top 10 this week and it just hit a new peak of #4 on Spotify, have to wonder if it's being considered. I don't normally address the Bubbling Under chart but I have to acknowledge this week that we have an actual Australian song there by a new artist in producer Dean Turnley. It's a very rare sight, a song that only charted on Spotify here, seemingly from pre-release hype which saw it immediately enter in the top 60. I'm reminded a little of the instant success of Dom Dolla's "Rhyme Dust" which was similarly paid dust on Spotify promotionally which is why both just kinda collapsed after that. Ironically, the top song on Hot Hits Australia right now is Dom Dolla's uninspired re-working of "Addicted to Bass", so Dean has a career arc to follow potentially. BTS score their 4th #1 album this week. I suspect it was not a particularly close competition. It does have me wondering if Luke Combs has just been releasing too many albums, which is good for overall units but bad for buyer fatigue. It's crazy to me that he's only ever had one #1 album and it was over 6 years ago. We've got new heights though for Bad//Dreems, who last snuck into the top 10 in 2023, but now they've increased that ceiling to a top 5 with their latest album. It's a little funny to me that press releases have to remind us that Morgan Evans is the guy who made "Kiss Somebody" some 9 years ago, which has turned into a 9 digit streaming monster to be fair, and also to be fair, he hasn't released an album since that one. His hit-laden second album actually made the top 5 with good longevity but he's back in the top 20 leagues with this one. Ella Langley's new album hasn't actually come out yet, that's her old one reaching the top 50 for the first time ever this week. Lastly we've got another first time entry from an Australian singer-songwriter I've never heard of in William Crighton, good for him.

All suggestions I made last week that said it would be on its last legs are for naught as it turned out at the very start of the next tracking week, it completely reversed its momentum, as did Bella Kay, so this week is a write-off, and now it looks most likely that "Rein Me In" will be the next #1. I don't think it'll get there this week, but it's certainly getting closer. I'm trying my hardest to be enthusiastic but for the first time in over 2 years, we have an Australian song in the top 10. Largely thanks to a big climb for the JENNIE remix, Tame Impala's "Dracula" climbs up to #8 this week. If it can last another week in the top 10 (and I think it will), that'll make it the first Australian song to spend multiple weeks in the top 10 in about 4 years. It has been a lean time and we need the rest of the world to tell us it's okay. Last week I was at Fremantle FC's first home game of 2026 and so was Kevin Parker. They actually play a Tame Impala hype anthem at every Freo home game just before the 4th quarter starts, and I don't know how he reacts to it. The funny (to me) thing that happened at the game is that there was a pre-game set up in the stands for Perth rapper Drapht. Australian locals may be familiar with his signature song "Jimmy Recard", and very, very astute listeners will know that he name-checks David Wirrpanda in that song, a former star player for Freo's crosstown rivals. I can confirm that in a sea of purple, he kept that reference in the song and even mimed a drop punt while he rapped it, no one seemed to mind. The absence of a Dominic Fike song in the top 20 this week means that Dominic Fike scores a top 20 hit this week. Noah Kahan has another top 50 entry, one that'll certainly drop this week but should stay in the top 50. Zara Larsson has a big re-entry with "Midnight Sun" that actually gets a new peak, and I suspect if we didn't have songs being excluded from the chart (properly or otherwise), this might be its first actual week in the top 50. Harry Styles secures a second week at #1 on the album chart. I'm guessing he won't get a third because BTS do numbers I believe. Lamb of God enter at #16 which is their first time missing the top 10 in about 20 years. The answer to the question of what to expect for a Jack Harlow album without any crossover hits is one that charts considerably lower than usual. Local country singer Beccy Cole scores her 9th top 50 album, and her first solo entry since 2018. The Black Crowes have her beat in that regard because this is their first album to chart outside of the 1990s. James Blake takes advantage of the new chart rules and reaches the top 50 again after his last two albums fell short. "Loading" and "Life Is Not The Same" are very good songs, I'm not very familiar with the new album.

It's also up to 30 weeks on the chart so this muckery won't go on much longer. In all seriousness though, the challenge has finally arrived. Bella Kay has unseated her on the Spotify chart, the first major domino to fall usually. She'll be hoping to get to #2 on this week's chart, and then if momentum continues like this, it's not out the question that we'll get our first new #1 of the year. In 2022, Harry Styles commanded 8 songs in the top 10 when his album came out. This time around he just narrowly manages 2 out of 10. This feels like a bit of a slump, and to be fair it is, but it's interesting to look back at that particular time in 2022, where sales figures weren't especially impressive. If "American Girls" had done as much as "Late Night Talking" did on debut, it still wouldn't have been #1, for instance. Harry Styles is doing what he can to slightly obfuscate the fact that we might genuinely get an Australian song in the top 10 next week. The global algorithm or something has latched onto the JENNIE remix of "Dracula", and by my maths, it's sitting at #7 combined on Spotify right now. The top end is being made weaker also by the fact that we possibly have 3 simultaneous top 20 hits omitted currently. "End of Beginning" has done its time, "Lush Life" has done nothing, but now Dominic Fike's "Babydoll", a song that charted below the top 50 years ago has now asserted itself. I don't know if anyone would disagree with ARIA bending the rules on this one because at the moment we're actually losing a unique top 50 hit through the new rules, and given the lay of the land right now, not even gaining anything to compensate it. Harry Styles scores his 4th #1 album this week, which means he's had as many solo #1's as he had with One Direction. Linkin Park's current Australian tour vaults them back into the top 5, while Laufey's future tour sends her back up. We've got two charity albums nearly next to each other in the top 20 this week, as the HELP(2) set enters at #18 and Fugazi are new at #20. This is the first time Fugazi have ever charted in Australia. A name that's new to me is Tasmanian singer Bully Hay who charts for the first time this week, same goes for Sam Buckingham from Byron Bay.

Spotify is a few days behind but it doesn't take Quasimodo to predict that 7 more days won't change things here. The remix of "Stateside" has vaulted into the top 10 up to #3. This matches "Never Forget You" as Zara Larsson's highest ever charting single. Also vaulting into the top 10 is Bella Kay, while Bruno Mars returns and scores a new peak with "I Just Might". He's also got another not quite top 10 debut in "Risk It All" but I don't think this will add to the tally of second week top 10 hits. Once again, a new Alex Warren single arrives that is unable to match up to "Ordinary", which has been doing some prime trolling if you only look at Spotify charts, where it's struggling to hang around in the top 20, but is apparently the most popular song on YouTube still. Possibly thanks to the tour announcement, "Dracula" climbs to a new peak of #17, matching the 2020 peak of "The Less I Know The Better". Another K-Pop EP has hit the charts, this time it's BLACKPINK. The EP's big single "JUMP" got to #12 last year. Olivia Dean has the #1 album for [I scroll back up a bit] a 10th week now. She holds off numerous arrivals. The first of which is Bruno Mars, who despite very strong long term performance usually, has only had the one #1 album with "Unorthodox Jukebox". There's no need to get mad as **** for Mitski this week as she has a new highest ever chart position in Australia with her new album entering at #3. Actually I want to say this is her highest peak in any country, but the streaming cope Scotland charts still get made for some reason. Gorillaz have been making the top 5 with every album since "Demon Days", with just "Plastic Beach" getting to #1. PinkPantheress sees a new top 10 peak thanks to a vinyl release. Pacific Avenue take their second album into the top 20, a far cry from when they got to #3. If you want to check out a more interesting local band, Telenova are making the top 30 again with their second album, just a little bit down from the first one.

Once again, do not expect anything to change because the lead is enormous and only being remotely threatened by other Olivia Dean songs that are not gonna have the sauce to dethrone the king. "Rein Me In" has managed to sneak a week at #2 now. There's a fast rise for the version of "Stateside" I do not enjoy as much as the original, but it's probably just fighting to be another #2 hit. sombr climbs again so now he has 4 top 50 hits that have all peaked between #2 & #6, very efficient. Bella Kay is rising fast and may reach the top 10 next week. The big event of the week is the On Replay chart activating the sub rule, despite that rule being abolished for this upcoming footy season. I was led to believe that old charting entries get a 10 week grace period, but Djo's "End of Beginning" is gone after 8 weeks. This happens on the very same week we get a new one, as Milky returned to the top 50 with "Just The Way You Are", thanks to the Mallgrab remix which is helping it back up. This is actually a new peak for the song, which despite a decently lengthy run, only got as high as #47 back in 2002. Dominic Fike also belatedly enters the top 50 with "White Keys", a song that was already voted into triple j's Hottest 100 months ago. Hilary Duff scores her first ever #1 album this week. I'm admittedly a little out of my depth on this one as despite growing up with her being a very recognisable figure on TV, most of her music career is a bit of a blind spot to me, suppose I'll have to do some research in the future. She's previously had three top 10 hits, getting as high as #3. I have roughly similar experience with Tom Busby, of Busby Marou fame. They're a duo that had one somewhat popular song on the radio 15 years ago but have largely diverted from that system and had a massive career since, including a #1 album in 2017. This is Tom's first solo album, and he's taking names on the folk circuit by debuting ahead of Mumford & Sons. This is a slight reverse of fortunes for them as they've managed to improve on their last album which gave them their lowest ever debut at #7. Next we've got Meg Mac entering the top 10 for the 4th time, though her last album entered at #1. We once again must consider the way the rules have changed because Baby Keem does improve on his only other top 50 appearance by 8 spots at #13, but he probably would've had a top 20 album back in 2021 under the new system too. Megan Moroney charts for the first time here at #20, and sir a second Elvis soundtrack has hit the chart. We've got back to back from the Australian metal scene as Above, Below get their first ever entry and they're just ahead of Karnivool, while the great timing of this post is that a MAY-A song just popped up on my shuffle playlist as I'm typing this up. Her first album sneaks her into the top 50, getting us to a pretty solid 10 Australian entries in the top 50 this week.

I'll be honest I'm not paying a whole lot of attention at the moment because I'm just waiting for anything new to happen. The problem with anticipating an uprising is that all we're getting is more Olivia Dean parking behind Olivia Dean. "Rein Me In" is now a top 10 hit and may move into the top 3 next week to absolutely reinforce it. sombr also moves fast to score a 4th top 10 hit and should climb again. There's a climb for "Opalite" that suggests to me that the physical singles came in, as the song dropped quite a bit on streaming. We've got new entries from Luke Combs & Bella Kay like I predicted last week. Ed Sheeran also returns with "Sapphire" as he's been playing stadiums lately. Speaking of playing stadiums, we're seeing more confirmation that the new rules are just heightening the range for the rules to not work. I suspect Bad Bunny had a top 30 hit on his hands with "Titi Me Pregunto", a song that's never charted before in Australia, but it hasn't had the seal of approval, I assume whoever's watching this just lost it in a sea of other Bad Bunny songs. It makes for an awful loss of a fun chart stat, as "I've Seen It" re-enters at #49, instead of #50, which would have been the 3rd time it peaked at #50. We've also got very belated arrivals for Zara Larsson & ROLE MODEL. There was a photo going around online at Laneway where ROLE MODEL had The Wiggles doing the role of Sally during the performance, and the photo was taken ~50 metres away at the Geese show. Just unbelievable proximity of these artists. Olivia Dean has the #1 album for [I scroll back up a bit] an 9th week now. Ed Sheeran has a big bounce back to #2 from his tour, moving ahead of a new arrival for Keli Holiday. Since Peking Duk have never released an album (though I'm not sure how high they would've charted), this is the highest he's ever charted. The great thing is that unlike last time I spoke about him, my blog post ranting about the discourse is now live (you have to scroll down to #337). The Charli XCX film soundtrack (not to be confused with the Charli XCX film) arrives at #4. Kylie Minogue has yet another live album on the chart, it's a little lower than her last one from when she was touring "Golden" (not that one). I remember I was out at the footy when she was playing in Perth because there was an Indigenous All-Stars game on, the dichotomy of Australian culture. Brent Faiyaz debuts in the top 20 for the second time. The ultimate moment of Aotearoa culture arrives in the middle of the chart as Six60's new album lands next to a boosted Lorde album. Six60 have had a top 10 album before in Australia oddly enough, though I've not really seen them get much attention here ever outside of one minor hit with DRAX Project. Another essential Australian band of the mid-2000s arrives with a long awaited new album, just on the complete opposite side of the chart this time. I suppose Kisschasy weren't exactly a big album band, but they had the hits. The biggest of which is "Opinions Won't Keep You Warm At Night" which is so 2007 that it debuted in the top 10 ahead of a Fall Out Boy song with a shorter title. This is their first new album in 17 years, basically half my life ago.

I'm guessing they either get it from another website, or just take a crack at it from looking at new releases. I feel like I've seen stats like it in the past, actually Rush runs several last fm accounts for some Australian radio stations so there'd be ways to scan it from there.

Just a heads up because I'm not 100% sure where he gets it from, but that particular website shouldn't necessarily be trusted as a source. Since at least around 2009, they've had their own 'Hot 100' airplay chart that copies the publicly available top 40, but is some mixture of guesswork & fan fiction below that. Just this week on the real chart, Guy Sebastian's new song popped in at #32 from just outside of the top 40, but he obviously missed it because it's a top 100 debut on the Hot 100. I've spoken to the guy who runs the website before and he's very strange and/or deluded.

For the most part, this is not a novelty chart where we create fake #1 hits because we were sick of the old ones. Of course, "Man I Need" gained an extra week at #1 because of the Christmas shenanigans, but otherwise, we're in for the long haul. We see no halt in momentum, we see no contenders on the horizon, we embrace our Gold FM future. Showing the power of social media and TikTok in the 2020s, an event that I can't imagine a significant portion of young Australians actually watched (look I watched it, but I don't think I count) has resulted in a massive boon for Bad Bunny, scoring both his first solo top 50 entries, and his highest ever entry as "DtMF" leads the pack at #4. It previously came close to entering the top 50 a year ago. I'm going to also point out that "Titi Me Pregunto" was not included on the On Replay chart last week, so I'm not sure whether to expect it on the chart next week even though it passes all the requirements. At the same time, "Opalite" rushes back into the top 10 thanks to the video release. As far as I can tell, it's had no physical sales added to it, so we'll see if Australia is also subject to chicanery in the coming weeks, but they'd have to sell a ludicrous number of them over here to pull off the great steal. This is my way of saying that you should be incredibly suspicious if it becomes a #1 single in the future, returning to #2 probably wouldn't require suspension of disbelief. sombr debuts in the top 20 and is making fast moves to ruin the peak of the also still trying to climb "12 to 12". The JENNIE remix of "Dracula" also aids that to a slightly improved new peak. If it matters to you, it's still not outpeaking "The Less I Know The Better". I've decided to add a new contextualising feature for the Bubbling Under chart, an asterisk to indicate songs that haven't actually reached the top 50 before. There's probably a better way to present it but that's just what I came up with on the moment, as something that transfers easily from my Notepad file to here. Hopefully I just haven't forgotten which songs made the top 50 and which ones didn't. It's also an alarmingly big listing this week, with only 6 'new' singles in the top 50 this week. "Raindance" is one of those too which will be removed next week I believe. Perhaps Luke Combs or Bella Kay can swing the dial the other way though. On the album chart, Karnivool score their second #1 album to date. I've been writing these entries here since around the start of 2015, which means there's been no need for me to ever mention Karnivool. Their last album was released in 2013, and it also scored them their first #1 (previously they debuted at #2 releasing on the same week as The Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D."). Karnivool are a progressive metal band from Perth who are often compared to Tool, and that was before they both decided to take 13 years to release a new album. They have added notoriety because their lead singer Ian Kenny also fronts the Perth alt rock band Birds of Tokyo who achieved significant mainstream success in the 2010s including multi-platinum singles (one of which got to #3 on the charts) and also have two #1 singles. I've been pretty obsessed with both bands since I was in high school (and I didn't even live in Western Australia). When I had to make an IT project developing an info-portal about dinosaurs, I took it upon myself to include a hidden easter egg game where your mouse cursor gets chased by a dinosaur while the opening riff to Karnivool's cover of Gotye's "The Only Way" plays in the background. Probably one of the greatest things I ever did. I've since seen both bands live and I heartily recommend Karnivool to anyone who wants to hear incredibly delicately composed rock music that can be both intense and beautiful. The new album's got my tick of approval for sure. Also going on this week, Joji's new album enters at #3, just like his last one did, though the one before that went to #1. Once again he's performing better in Australia than elsewhere, so ARIA labelling him as an Australian artist must have some sort of sway in the public consciousness. Bad Bunny also climbs to a new peak of #4 on the album chart, just not from quite as steep a starting point. J. Cole enters at #7 which might feel fittingly like a fall-off, but in truth despite feeling like he's been unstoppably popular for ages, he's only ever had one #1 album in Australia, constantly at odds with his tendency to release at inopportune times for this market. ROLE MODEL climbs into the top 20 this week, which coincides with his Laneway appearance, and it looks like it'll be accompanied by his first top 50 single next week. Also benefitting from Laneway is Geese, who climb into the top 20 for the first time. PinkPantheress was also another draw card here, while Chappell Roan was headlining but doesn't have a new enough album to show for it. Djo was actually at Laneway last year, and just benefits from a physical release of his deluxe edition. I mentioned Tool earlier and funnily enough, we have the return of the Maynard side-project Puscifer, scoring their first top 50 entry since 2007, back when the only song of theirs I know was on the radio, can I get a hell yeah? I also want to highlight the new entry for Melbourne band Blusher, because it strangely bears the name of their prior EP, on the same week they released a similarly named album actually called "rager". I've got no idea.

The international social media machine rears its head again as we're proven to care considerably more about the GRAMMYs than the ARIA Awards or really anything happening in our own country even though there's no shot as many people actually saw them. It's given Olivia Dean another monster jolt and we'll have to wait for not next week but the week after that to see if she's ready to settle up top. For now she's pretty unbothered at the top to the extent that her closest competition is her own song, "So Easy" now hitting #2 for the first time. 'Where the hell is RAYE's #2 peak?', we ask for another week. Otherwise it's a relatively quiet week with just a new entry for Noah Kahan. Once again he has an extremely Spotify heavy audience and I'm not sure if the rest of the market will respond. If Olivia Dean hadn't won a GRAMMY, it would have been possible that "Rein Me In" would have a stat line of 20 20 20 20 and I am very disappointed to have missed this. I call this the Mumford & Sons record because "Little Lion Man" did this at #16. #16 is where "Rein Me In" has climbed, so they've tried to emulate Mumford & Sons but done it incorrectly, for shame. Olivia Dean has the #1 album for [I scroll back up a bit] an 8th week now. We're gonna have to see how many first week buyers from 2013 come back for a new album in 2026 to see if she can be toppled next week. Bad Bunny is probably also close to outpacing her now but I suspect he's too far behind to make the ground. Don Toliver pulls up at #4, his first time in the top 10 after three top 20 albums. I'd say it's the effect of having a sort of viral hit of late but it feels wrong to pretend that "No Pole" is as popular (or good) as "No Idea" or "After Party". Lily Allen's physical release (and tour announcement) sends her back to #6 which is exactly where she peaked last year. The new Stranger Things soundtrack arrives at #11, just a little behind the #8 peak the last one managed. As is often the case, EsDeeKid's arbitrary chart allowance means that he scores a rare 2nd week new peak. Next we have a punk band from Brisbane who did get all of their sales counted, as Radium Dolls score their first ever chart entry. I'll also admit to never having knowingly listened to Sydney's Velvet Trip but they're also charting for the first time.

Friday Chart Predictions
If you want to stretch the rules a bit, "AM" is a top 10 End Of Year album in 2013, exactly 10 years later and "I Wanna Be Yours" makes the End Of Year list for the first time (album makes the top 10 for the second time that year too).

Friday Chart Predictions
Evidently niche but I was hoping to see Karnivool a bit higher in the first mid-week, guess they won't be adding another country to their charting spreadsheet. Fantastic album though after a long wait. Their last album came out a week before I joined this forum 😅

More than ever, I feel like a big substantial effect will come from people who just search him up and it's his top song currently (especially if many aren't too fussed to pin down non-English song titles to whatever snippet they heard.

Should The UK Singles & Album Charts Have a Recurrent Rule where Older songs and Albums are disqualified from the charts
I feel like the denigrating 'effect' of having older entries on the chart feels exaggerated because it's an expression that can only be relayed through chart obsessives who are likely to share the feeling. The kinds of people who dig into every new entry immediately, wear it out and then become baffled that the rest of the country aren't already sick of these songs. The same way radio stations tend to stick with establish hits for seemingly unreasonable times, because in the interest of retaining listeners, they provide familiarity. I don't think a quick fix ever really suffices though because it never tackles the root cause of the situation, and you just create a chart where the gaps are bigger and the week by week tussles become less thrilling, because there are just less songs that are eligible. I used to run simulations of charts with specifically planned out chart run formulae (so you could have the parabola, the high debut that declines, the slow burner etc). One of my big takeaways from it is that without an influx of active hits, you get a drudging corpse of activity. Redacting the chart might create new hits, but they're ones that can't possibly compete with the biggies because the chart doesn't have that kind of influence. Whenever I look at the lower end of the UK Chart, I always see a bunch of songs that are only charting because of ACR displacement, and can't fall out because there's nothing to replace them, but they're never cracking the top 40 because they're increasingly far away from the mark. It's a bit like when Glee used to infiltrate the charts, or there was an influx of album tracks. They create statistical activity, but they're not part of the main top 40 conversation (usually) and so that just chugs along with its pre-ordained business.

Friday Chart Predictions
I'll concede it's probably not set to be his biggest hit or anything, but I think it is worth considering that there are times when the public really just aren't rushing towards new music, for whatever reason. I like comparing fellow new singles (ie less than 3-4 months old) because they don't have the same degree of ironed-on listeners and tend to start from scratch. Kinda like how Djo's "End of Beginning" is doing roughly as well now as it did 2 years ago. It's easier to do that because it has a baseline of around 1.5 million streams every day that it didn't last time around. In the same way Harry Styles has a lot of monthly listeners by happenstance, it's an example of the way older songs (whether of the "Boys Don't Cry" or the "Lush Life" variety) tend to outperform brand new hits with less promotional effort, both in terms of reaching surprisingly high peaks and also not collapsing quite as fast as the moment seems to end. All things considered, I think it's doing fine thus far and the big week 2 decline can just as easily be explained by the natural cooling on early repeat listens, as it is an irregularly high curiosity listen->bounce rate. We already know there's a second wind built into the album release day incoming so we'll see if that rejuvenates it. I'll leave it at that though because my social battery's pretty spent for the day 😌

Friday Chart Predictions
I absolutely understand how it works. My point is that the initial (new release window) audience reach for anyone is just too small to call it decisive. Long standing hits are the ones made by people who haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe they're not going to because the first burst of listeners aren't giving it the best vibe, but I think it's erroneous to suggest that a song underperforms because of listeners and not non-listeners, especially when it reflects a general audience trend against all new music. The only song released within the last few months even competing with it is Noah Kahan's, and Harry's already overtaken that one on DSPs. I'll admit I have an aversion to the observation of 'it flopped because bad', a tenet only used when it's convenient to our own narrative, but it's way too soon to call it anyway.
-
Friday Chart Predictions
I agree but inflated or not, it indicates a lot of potential listeners that haven't even clicked on the new song, which at the very least suggests it's not quite an all-encompassing 'event' single that everyone's moved on from.
-
Friday Chart Predictions
Counterpoint: Harry has 63 million monthly listeners on Spotify (up from 52 million just before the song dropped) and the song only has 55 million streams. I'd estimate somewhere around 10-20 million listeners total (it's a 5 plays per listener ratio on last fm), so the problem is that even among people who listen to Harry Styles, most of them have not heard it.

Back in 2012, One Direction released their single "Live While We're Young", the lead single to their second album following the massive success of the first one. It did absolutely bonkers. I forget the exact figures, but at a time when the #1 single would tend to move about 20-30,000 units in a week, One Direction managed somewhere north of 60,000. The highest weekly digital sales figure ever, and an amount that's only been surpassed by a small handful of Australian Idol singles and "Candle In The Wind 1997". "Live While We're Young" did not hit #1. It debuted at #2 because its release coincided with an even bigger monster on the charts, PSY's "Gangnam Style", which on its biggest ever week, moved around 70,000 units. A frighteningly unlucky result for One Direction though they would get their #1 hit a few years later. Anyhow, I suspect Harry Styles was gearing up for a #1 debut and I think he probably could have done it under normal circumstances, but didn't account for triple j's Hottest 100 falling on the same week of his release. Having a large swathe of the country's music fans glued to another piece of news immediately after the release can't be good for promotion, and to make matters worse, the winning song that got the biggest boost from the whole thing was Olivia Dean's "Man I Need". It's been 13 years and Harry has learnt nothing. At least he's already got some #1 hits though. The best he can do is play grinch to some other contenders, as RAYE & Olivia Dean's other single would have otherwise scored new peaks this week. As for the rest, as much as I would love to do a full deep dive on the fascinating history behind Playlunch's novelty hit "Keith" which landed at #4 in the Hottest 100, it hasn't quite cracked the top 50. Instead our big arrival comes from the #2 finisher, Keli Holiday's "Dancing2". If you are unsure of who this is, it's a solo singing persona of Adam from Peking Duk. If you're unsure of who they are, they're an electro-pop duo who scored numerous hits in the mid to late 2010s. Their biggest hit "High" actually landed at #2 in triple j's Hottest 100 for 2014, so it's his second time in the runner up position. "Dancing2" could best be described as an electro pop ballad dedicated to Adam's girlfriend Abbie Chatfield. She's a fairly famous influencer who came to the nation's attention years back as a contestant on The Bachelor, who got given a villain edit that made her look pretty dumb from the outset, and I suspect a lot of people are still holding onto this manipulation. Over the past 4-5 months, I have witnessed the mother of all algorithmic boosted smear campaigns as a bunch of people who dislike one or two of these people have been screaming to the rooftops about how it's the worst song ever made and how the industry is trying so hard to make it a thing. Facebook's algorithm keeps feeding any Keli Holiday related posts to these people and they keep signal boosting it beyond belief, all the while convinced in their echo chamber that they're putting it in its place. Since Peking Duk actually performed at the AFLW Grand Final late last year, it even gets thrown in as an excuse for anyone who hates women's sports to be gratified by the association. It's the new Tones And I where the outrage is so hyperbolic it makes anyone who thinks their additional grenades to associate themselves with the crowd look idiotic for thinking they are doing themselves or the explosions any favours. I can't help but think these people have made the song into a bigger hit, and I've never learnt what new music these people think we should be listening to instead. Angry online mobs are always so disorganised. Anyway, the song is now a top 30 hit, so congrats to all of them, tell me more about how people in their early 20s are so ignorant because they aren't intimately familiar with an LCD Soundsystem song that came out when they were wearing diapers and wasn't a hit (because that's not what they do). Also the less interesting Tame Impala song that finished at #3 got a new peak this week. Addison Rae finished at #20 but her rebound feels so isolated that I'm not sure it's fully attributed to this. In other news, "Beautiful Things" has been pushed to pasture and the Bubbling Under chart is very big this week. It's a monumental week on the album chart as Megadeth claim their first ever #1 album. I haven't had the opportunity to check, but with it being over 40 years since their debut came out, we might be looking at the longest ever wait to score a #1 album in Australia. I can't really claim the same spiel about Louis Tomlinson as he's only at #3, but he did score a #2 album when he released within a month of Taylor Swift back in 2022 which is always a silly prospect. Poppy makes a big splash this week with her first ever top 50 album coming in at #7, while local streaming juggernauts The Paper Kites reverse their recent fortune and debut at #13, their second highest ever position. I won't choose to take credit for this but I mentioned last week that EsDeeKid's album was missing from the chart, it isn't anymore! The Kiwi charts do not seem to have gotten the memo though. Spacey Jane & Ocean Alley are two more big performers in the Hottest 100 who see noticeable rebounds on the chart.
