We beat the UK to that particular play but otherwise we're following their lead because Olivia Dean has climbed up to #2. She'll have to do a whole lot more of that if she wants to get any higher. Sabrina Carpenter mostly sees varying declines though they're not very big and also "House Tour" manages to climb into the top 20. We've also got the first ever application of the new chart rules forcing a new song into the chart, as Lady Gaga sneaks into the top 50 with "The Dead Dance". This is the second time this year that Lady Gaga has debuted at #50, as "Abracadabra" did the same before climbing 38 places to its #12 peak. It's possible this one will climb also next week but I wouldn't count on it being that drastic. I'm writing this on September 16th, of course, and astute observers will remember that both "The Door" and "greedy" were released on September 15th, 2023 ("greedy" isn't in the top 50 right now but it might be next week). You would think that makes this their last week on the chart, but we're still learning how that works. KPop Demon Hunters returns to the top of the album chart for an 8th week. I made a bad prediction but to be fair it was probably close. The reason I mentioned uncertainty around the new rules is because if you look at this week's chart, you'll see Olivia Rodrigo's "GUTS" in for a 105th week, either an oversight or a confirmation that this is our benchmark going forward. I can approve of this considering that 104 weeks isn't really 2 years, although ARIA have been operating under the belief that 4 months is somewhere between 16 and 17 weeks so it's a little inconsistent if you do the maths. I blame the Smarch weather. Anyway we have debuts and the highest one comes from John Butler. He's often seen with or without his Trio, where the inclusion is usually a significant boon on his chart positions even though he's usually the main guy behind it all. A 'Kevin Parker' album probably wouldn't debut at #1 if you catch my drift. Anyway this is a very funny application of tagging because if you look up the album on Spotify, you'll see 'John Butler, John Butler Trio' as the credited artist, an amusing concession to promotion. Track 1 on the album is called "Going Solo". It's clearly worked though because this is charting significantly higher than any other solo John Butler album in the past. Next up we've got G Flip who hit #1 with their last album, the one that very briefly held the record for most triple j Hottest 100 entries in a single year. Things have changed a lot in 25 years, and so now Slipknot do belong, do exist, and people do give a shit. That's to say that their self-titled album has scored a new peak thanks to the vinyl release, originally peaking at #32. Their last 4 albums have all gone to #1. Unlike his suits, David Byrne is also managing to fit in as he scores his highest ever solo album entry, though I guess the new rules are helping a little in both of these cases. They certainly are for Big Thief, who have matched the #19 peak of their previous album. I can't say the same for Rob Thomas, who's gone from 4 straight top 3 albums to one that's just happy to be here. You'll also see two returning King Gizzard albums this week. This is truly an iceberg meme moment because the band have put their entire catalogue up on Bandcamp under the Radiohead model. They probably wouldn't do much to the chart under the old rules because they're likely falling short, but I just want to highlight that the Australian On Replay Albums chart (which is a top 50) has 28 of their albums this week.

As of this week, ARIA have removed everything that is over 2 years old. Not just became a hit 2 years ago, everything. So goodbye, "Breakin' Dishes", "Lose Control" and "Pink Pony Club", while "The Door" is likely heading to an early grave in two weeks. There is a provisional rule that allows exceptions for anything that hasn't charted in 10 years and makes the top 30, though we're yet to really see the specifics of how it plays out. Tyler, The Creator's "Cherry Bomb" re-issue might be the litmus test, as it hangs around for a second week in the top 30. Perhaps fortunate for once that these anniversary releases are often late because the album did chart 10 and a half years ago. Olivia Rodrigo will likely confirm for us a specific 104 week limit next week, but it's also possible we see exceptions in the case of midweek releases, like how "Not Like Us" managed 17 weeks on the New Music Singles Chart, and maybe leap years could come into effect, never doubt automated systems if given the chance to do something silly. On the surface, the biggest change comes with the album chart. Not only has there been an exodus of all the older releases, but a surprise bonus package is the apparent disappearance of all those compilations that were often appearing week on week with no clear attention, and sometimes dubious releases (looking at you, ABBA & Flo Rida). I do not believe that ARIA have actually removed Greatest Hits sets, but it appears they're updating their streaming rules for the second time. According to the new Code of Practice, streams only count to the original album for any track, so it's still possible for these albums to chart, but they'll likely have to do it on just sales mostly. This has likely partially affected Calvin Harris & Benson Boone whose albums I'd expect to have jumped back into the top 50 if they had all their streams counting. The 6th highest selling Australian album this week was a Greatest Hits set by The Bamboos, which is likely just outside the top 50, just on first week sales. ARIA have not actually taken all of the old music out behind the shed, because we have been introduced to new On Replay charts for both the main charts, and the Australian charts. Technically we've had one of these for the Albums Chart for over a decade though it was previously called the Catalogue Albums Chart, the stats from that chart have carried over to this new one. These four charts are all top 50 charts, and I regret to inform you that they are subject to the same selective reporting that the ARIA Charts have always had. It's hard to be certain on all omissions, but I'm pretty confident that Radiohead's "Creep" and "Let Down" are both missing from this new chart, and the omissions on the Australian charts could be plentiful because we've never seen the chart this far down before. This also means a big revitalisation on all the component charts, though again I'm suspicious of potential omissions. For the record, there has been no specific mention of what will happen with Christmas music or End Of Year charts, although my interpretation of the Code of Practice suggests there won't be any hybrid of the two charts, and we're going to get the funny Billboard Year End experience for those songs that are getting ruled out in the middle of the year. Anyway the biggest piece of news is the tragic death of my extra leading zero on the album chart posts, gone but not forgotten. It is also possible the Bubbling Under chart might never be used again, but I'm gonna wait out to see what happens once the K-Pop Demon Hunters songs all hit 4 months, and maybe there will be loads of Taylor Swift songs on the chart then, so it'll have a triumphant return. -- Now let's talk about the chart itself. "Golden" is #1 for a 6th week. I'm going to cautiously say that it's safe for next week too but I do this with no Spotify data to work with. Olivia Dean hits the top 10 but the big happening of the week is Sabrina Carpenter arriving in the top 50 with her entire album. This is a slight improvement on last year's effort when a couple tracks didn't quite make the cut, and again provisionally, I suspect the majority will stick around for the next week. In case you were wondering, there are approximately 8 songs missing via the new rules, so it's not really changing her chart fortunes this week, with the lowest being at #32. As I correctly predicted last week, "Tears" is the only new arrival in the top 10, while "Manchild" records its first climb ever in its chart run to return to the top 10 (2-2-2-3-7-13-15-17-17-18-19-20-7, if you were wondering). Sabrina Carpenter might be harshing the buzz on potential new entries getting sucked into the top 50 but to be fair, I think only "Dior" is close range of doing it, and I won't be mourning if it gets locked out. Actually the biggest disappointment for me is that I've spent the past several years observing the ins & outs of the ARIA Chart, waiting to see when we might finally have a top 50 chart with no 2010s singles left in it for the first time since that decade started. "All The Stars" was the last hold out, and I believe it would have fallen out on this very week, allowing me to make a mighty celebration that I'd been waiting years to do. What an underwhelming time to introduce these new rules solely on this basis. Sabrina Carpenter scores her second #1 album. This could prove an interesting tussle on next week's album given the distribution of streaming points on these top two albums and a likely sales differential. If I had to guess, I'd think Sabrina gets it next week before KPop Demon Hunters overtakes again the week after, but it's too hard to tell. Last week we had a lot of top 10 debuts and I made a prediction that sombr would actually climb in week 2 because of the power of big single streams. I was correct, but I overlooked the possibility of the usually strong second weeks of Stray Kids, which also seems them to a new peak and ruins my observation of their peak patterns from last week. The first artist to really take advantage of the new rules is The Wolfe Brothers, who score their 5th top 10 album through this. The highest they've ever charted is #6, so they're very clutch about this. Hitting a new career high is Hayley Jensen, charting for the second time, but now at #14. Followers of Australian reality TV from decades ago like myself would be correct in identifying that it is indeed the Hayley Jensen from Season 2 of Australian Idol. Another beneficiary is The Hives, who score their highest charting album since 2002 with an album that is not a Greatest Hits despite what it might look like. Then, just sneaking in is Belinda Carlisle who charts for the first time since 1996!

There was that one week in 2015 when they just...didn't get all the data. Coincided with some lucky breaks on the UK and NZ charts as a result. (Though the UK one was also when they changed the dates and had a shorter week anyway, so it was strange in its own right)

Just bear in mind that the Kiwi charts have had rules like this for years now, they're a little more strict (18 months is their limit), and they aren't remarkably exciting for it.

It definitely helps a little bit but there's also probably a shared expectation from both artist & listener that contributes more. The artist knows that Track 1 is important, and treats it with due diligence. The listener knows the artist knows this, and gives it greater consideration. In any case, it usually gets quickly evaluated and 'put in its place'. Sometimes quicker than people realise because repeat listeners & cherry pickers are a huge component to the streaming numbers. I always think of Ed Sheeran's 2017 album. Track 1, "Eraser" is a bit left field, and is the least streamed song on that album. No one would've known that going in, but already on the first day of streaming, it's only ranked 9th out of 16 on the album. By the Monday it was rubbing shoulders with the deluxe tracks. That's a remarkably quick assessment that gives some plausible deniability to any future Track 1 that feels like it's coasting.

We come very close to having 7 KPop Demon Hunters songs in the top 10, and maybe that's still possible as sombr is crashing pretty hard on Spotify this week...except nah, Sabrina Carpenter's gonna carve up real estate. Maybe not quite as much as you'd expect as she's having a slower showing in Australia as per regular business. Too early to say if it's gonna correct itself by the end of the week or she's genuinely less popular here, but expect only "Tears" and "Manchild" as top 10 locks at this stage. Olivia Dean continues to press on as well and could make the top 10 as well. Also vaulting up is Tyler, The Creator, scoring just his 4th ever top 20 hit this week. Doja Cat arrives at #28 but is still making gains on Spotify currently. Could drop next week due to increased competition, but might not be as DOA as it looks. Also just in case there wasn't enough KPop Demon Hunters in here, TWICE are now in here twice as "Strategy" sneaks in. The always popular Rihanna album cut "Breakin' Dishes" shows up for the first time ever (already Platinum mind you), re-asserting the Reloaded edition of "Good Girl Gone Bad" as one of the most hit-laden albums ever, this is the 9th top 50 hit on that album now. It also presents an interesting situation for ARIA next week as it's one of the 8 songs that are old enough to be removed from the chart in this week's top 50. 5 of these are no-brainers I don't expect to last, the other two include "Pink Pony Club" and "Lose Control", songs that are too old but hadn't quite debuted 2 years ago (I still expect them to go). ARIA's initial clause allowed for a 10 week grace period for songs that make the top 30, so we shall see what they make of Rihanna's newly debuting entry. KPop Demon Hunters is the #1 album for a 7th week. They fend off one of the biggest weeks of new arrives of the year, which doesn't mean much because it's only the top album they need to beat, but there's some definite aura farming when you see off new entries from #2 down to #6. The closest contender is Laufey, perhaps expected as her last album debuted in the top 10 and she's only gotten more popular since then. I now have some interesting trivia for you. Who do you think is the highest charting Icelandic artist in Australia? Jónsi & Emiliana Torrini have actually never made the top 50. KALEO top out in the top 30, while even Sigur Rós have never quite made the top 10. Australia was a particularly big market for Ásgeir a decade ago and he reached the top 10, and your obvious choice of Björk has just been tied by Laufey. The answer is of course Of Monsters and Men, whose debut album was such a hit that it actually climbed to #1 in early 2013. It might just be a matter of time for Laufey to eventually top the charts here, just ask Deftones. I was recently surprised to learn that their classic "White Pony" debuted as high as #2 in Australia, and they were on diminishing returns after that. It was a mighty twist then in 2016 when they scored a #1 album for the first time. The follow up to that album peaked at #3, and that's where they've landed yet again with their latest. If you want to talk about fun chart patterns though, look at Stray Kids, who now have three #2 albums and three #4 albums, with no other top 10 peaks. They've done this all in the space of 3 years. Speaking of artists who've gotten immensely popular in the last 3 years...actually I don't want to talk about Royel Otis. Find out why by reading my next blog post on Friday. They're not the only artist with dodgy vibes in their lyrics though, because sombr is arriving at #6 with an album thriving off streaming numbers, so it's probably the new entry this week that'll hold strongest next week. I'm out of links but it's okay because I made it to the end of the debut chain, now I can just mention that Lainey Wilson has come up trumps with her deluxe re-issue, improving on the #19 debut she had last year to make it to #8. John Fogerty has cranked out the '(John's Version)'s this week to enter in the top 10 with a bunch of songs you're likely very familiar with. Tyler, The Creator doesn't quite see the same slingshot as Lainey Wilson, but he does turn a top 20 album into a top 10 this week, after a much longer wait ("Cherry Bomb" originally debuted at #13). Tyler actually has 4 albums in the top 25 this week. Wolf Alice's last album got them into the top 10 for the first time, and they'd have probably done it again if they could just wait a week to put this one out. Following the legacy of the occasional Indian artist who gets a decent amount of traction in the antipodes, Karan Aujla gets his first ever entry this week. We've also got more re-issues, but this one's nowhere near a new peak because it was already huge on arrival, looking at the debut album from Perth boys Jebediah, perhaps the second most famous band named after minor Simpsons lore (sorry Hockey Dad), with their beloved debut album. If you want to get up to speed, "Leaving Home" and "Harpoon" are two stone cold classics in the much loved realm of '90s Australian alt-rock. Just sneaking into the top 40 is some kind of Bleak Squad. They are in fact a supergroup, comprised of Adalita (of Magic Dirt) fame, as well as members of The Bad Seeds, Dirty Three and Art of Fighting (not to be confused with Art of Sleeping), which is several generations of rock royalty. Lastly, we've got the return of Hands Like Houses' album from earlier this year. What a crazy week, and yet next week is gonna be even crazier (Sabrina Carpenter probably debuts at #1).

I didn't mention last week that Tinashe hit a new career high by surpassing the #5 peak of "All My Friends", so I will this week and she's gotten even higher again. Tyler, The Creator continues to wreak havoc on the relevance of a Friday release as he charts a new entry weeks after the fact, and it's on the cusp of surpassing the daily Spotify peak from day 1. Olivia Dean gets the huge boon of a week 1 new entry, as "Man I Need" will no doubt soar next week. KPop Demon Hunters is now the #1 album for a 6th week. I believe it's the longest running #1 album from an animated film but haven't had time to double check this. Conan Gray has scored his highest ever charting album as he reaches #2. He's had two top 10s before, but only on the lower end. Jordan Davis, the guy who made that song about how you should try just buying a house scores his first ever top 50 album, and lands in the top 10 even. The next debut comes from Mama Kin Spender, which is the duo of Mama Kin and Spender if you can believe it. Spender is also one half of one of my favourite songs no one's ever heard of. OneRepublic enter with another one of those compilations that basically no one is buying, and it's just in time to potentially climb next week as THE GREAT GOMMAGE OF 2025 IS HAPPENING (play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, very good video game) and like half the album chart will be wiped.

Amusingly I think that listener archetype very much does exist, and they've already moved on from that month old single (or at least, it's out of power rotation)

I'm constantly thinking that the KPop Demon Hunters Honmoon will have been achieved and it'll start declining, but I'm constantly wrong, as the soundtrack hits continue to worm themselves up into the tightest possible upper bounds of the chart. Of interest this week, the two Saja Boys entries have swapped ranks, so while their historic final peaks may have the final say in what was the biggest, it does reflect an arbitrary scenario that says more about their competition than anything else. Perhaps it'll have to be TWICE as our barometer for momentum given theirs is most easy to observe. Something that also helps is that we have achieved what I believe to be a never-been-seen level of equilibrium. This week's top 10, top 30, and unbelievably top 50 are all unchanged from last week, meaning that it's never been easier for me to type up the chart. It's a moment of silliness I'm going to appreciate before the incoming chart rules in 2 weeks time turn any wacky chart instances into something slightly less earned. If we're being honest, it'll probably increase the chance of this happening again. KPop Demon Hunters returns to post a 5th week at #1 on the album chart. If you thought the singles chart was boring, then I hope you appreciate an album chart with 8 new entries this week. The first of those is from Guy Sebastian, who is not actually quite as old as the album title might make you believe. I've often felt like Sony are hesitant to release new albums from their big tickets when they don't have a hit attached to them, which might be why it's taken 5 years for a new album. Maybe they'll appreciate that he's still debuting as high as he would when he was scoring chart topping hits, as this is his 12th top 10 album, and the 5th to land in the top 2. mgk continues to run on the goodwill he earnt some years ago to debut in the top 3 for the 3rd time in a row, now he's gotten a #1, #2 & #3. Fresh from being voted as having made two of the top 10 best Australian songs of all time ("Flame Trees" & "Khe Sanh", look them up, classics), Cold Chisel have yet another chance for everyone to buy these same songs again as their live album for last year's tour enters at #4. Fresh from some more dumb internet discourse, Ethel Cain is entering at #5 for the second time in 4 months, this time with an actual new album. Next we have an actual first time charter from Ninajirachi. Not to be confused with her label boss Nina Las Vegas, it's been nearly a decade since she popped up as a finalist in triple j's Unearthed High competition, and her eclectic and curious debut album arrives in the top 20. I'm now learning that BABYMETAL's 2023 release is not considered in-house to be a studio album, which might explain why it got lost in the shuffle and didn't chart here, but it does allow the puns to relish, and also mean that they've only charted in Australia with their albums whose names start with 'Metal'. Or maybe the real difference is that it was released when they were in-between major label signings. I dunno, I just like the music. JID does an Ethel Cain in that he peaks at #42 for the second time in a row. There's still enough of a Good Charlotte following in Australia to get them to sneak into the top 50. Maybe that seems surprising, but maybe it's more strange that they had a #1 album two cycles ago. I heard one of their new songs when I was getting an Uber from the airport a few weeks ago, that's my anecdote.

You'll have to forgive me, I've already written about 3,000 words for my blog today so I'm a bit worn out on finding things to say about the charts. It's a much less exciting week this time anyway. Chappell Roan arrives at #4 with "The Subway", making it her first ever top 10 debut. It may hold on in the top 10 next week but it is largely succumbing to the unstoppable force of KPop Demon Hunters. That soundtrack now has 5 simultaneous top 10 entries as "How It's Done" joins the crew this week. Furthermore, the TWICE version of "Takedown" does manage to make the top 50 this week, meaning the soundtrack now holds 8 spots in the top 50 and has me wondering what album has singlehandedly managed the most weeks in the top 50 on the singles chart with all its tracks together. I suspect the 275 weeks shared between the two big hits on "After Hours" makes for a difficult competition. We'd need all of these tracks hanging around well into 2026 to match that. sombr has been in a perpetual battle for weeks now between his top two tracks, and now a 3rd enters the fold. KPop Demon Hunters continues to climb on all fronts, but faces its toughest challenge yet, and loses. The inevitable return to the top for Hilltop Hoods. It's actually been over 6 years since their last studio album but they haven't missed a step and score their 7th consecutive #1 album that has new songs on it. I put forward that confusing condition because they reached #11 in 2007 with "The Hard Road Restrung", but then in 2016 did manage a #1 album with their double restrung album that notably features new track "1955" which is one of their biggest hits ever. Otherwise this week it's a huge boon for Renee Rapp who's gone from barely making the top 50 in 2023 to #3 this week. Arriving for the first time ever in stylish fashion is local singer Darcie Haven, with her 6 track EP. $uicideboy$ is still a terrible band name. Another local band returns this week with The Vanns who previously made the top 10, this time landing at #27, we wait to see who is the last notable artist whose chart peaks are worsened by not waiting for the new rules next month. At the same time we've got a monumental throwback who probably doesn't mind too much. For the first time in over 40 years, Swanee is back in the top 50. If you don't know who that is, he's the brother of Jimmy Barnes and a cult figure in Australian rock history. His biggest success came in the late '80s when he became the new lead singer of The Party Boys and scored a #1 hit with their cover of "He's Gonna Step On You Again", getting to that song a few years before the Happy Mondays did.

Two days ago when I was in Melbourne I won at pub trivia for the first time ever (have had many near misses), and one of the questions they asked was what the current #1 single on the ARIA Charts were, never been more locked in. The fanfare increases as now all 7 songs from the film are in the top 15, and the TWICE version of "Takedown" nearly made the top 50 too, perhaps they could have if this weren't a MONUMENTAL chart week. I haven't pulled out the 🚨 AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON 🚨 in quite a while, and some might argue that it's still fake, but in my mind it's so real. As mentioned last week, we recently encountered triple j's Hottest 100 Australian Songs countdown, which pulled in a massive 2.65 million votes (even our prime minister voted), and saw INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart" crowned victorious. Immediately after this, Port Adelaide, the AFL team who have been co-opting the song at their home games for the past decade suffered their worst ever defeat to their cross town rivals the Adelaide Crows on a day where the triple j & AFL subreddits occasionally were indistinguishable. They see themselves back into the top 30, but it's not the biggest re-entry as Crowded House's #5 finishing "Don't Dream It's Over" had a head start and will probably utilise its residual streaming power to stick the landing better as well. The most important part of all of this is that we do technically have a new Australian entry in the top 50 with the undisputed titan of Australian hip-hop, Hilltop Hoods' seminal 2003 single "The Nosebleed Section" finally becoming a top 50 hit. It never had a proper release in its day and so didn't impact the top 100 until 2009, and since then it's never gotten higher than #75 until now. The single is now 10xPlatinum but in case you're unfamiliar, it's a song built on a sample of Melanie's "People In The Front Row", Melanie sadly passed away last year. Pay respect to her in the Australian way by popping some sick BMX tricks if you get the chance. We also see some returns for high finishers in "Sweet Disposition", "Somebody That I Used To Know" and "My Happiness". Ahead of all of this is our only truly new entry of the week from Drake & Central Cee. I just want to note that the other day I saw a tweet with over half a million views on Twitter that falsely suggested (with no Community Note) Spotify's recent audit removed 6 million streams from this song, which is a reminder to anyone reading this to be cautious in accepting anything online, especially if it's deliberately pushing a narrative that benefits you. If you don't like Drake, you shouldn't need to make up reasons to justify it. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack continues to rule the roost, one would think that its lead has just gotten bigger, given that Justin Bieber climbed to #2 and his stuff is declining. We've got more Australian news on the debut front. Tim Minchin scores his 2nd top 5 album with an album that might trick you into thinking it's an anagram if you don't think about it too hard. He had a #3 album in 2020. Also take your canvas bags to the supermarket. Sir, a second solo 5SOS album has hit the top 10 this year. This time it's from Michael Clifford who enters at #10. Now every member of the band has had a top 50 album, just Ashton couldn't make the top 10. Alice Cooper returns to the chart as a full band for the first time in nearly half a century, to differentiate from solo Alice Cooper who charts pretty regularly. A band I've been quite fond of this year, Folk Bitch Trio lands their first ever chart appearance. They are in fact a trio who make folk music. Madonna comes through with her new remix album, while Freddie Gibbs gets his first ever top 50 album. We also see a return for possibly the last time for INXS's "The Very Best", an album noteworthy to me as I think it might be the only album in history to have charted at every single position from #1 to #100, and it may not be unrealistic to say this might never happen again. I'm gonna miss my leading zero.

In a manner that I don't see commented on very much, "DAISIES" had another one of those suspicious isolated 2nd week climbs and has rapidly been declining this week. Possibly it would've been #1 anyway but it makes me wonder. HUNTR/X also now do have a second top 10 hit as "How It's Done" makes up for its two weeks at #11. They're also joined by Alex Warren who scores his 2nd top 10 hit, the new album bolstering him to 4 songs in the top 50 this week when he was threatening to only have 1 otherwise. We've only got 4 weeks left before I make the same Expedition 33 joke again, and we could be seeing some very interesting things next week thanks to triple j's Hottest 100 Australian Songs countdown. You should check it out because I reckon unless you live here, there's bound to be a mix of songs you're very familiar with and others you aren't, but are nestled between them as if to suggest they're just as worth your time. I'm a big endorser of Australian music and this is 50 odd years of quintessential selections. KPop Demon Hunters makes it 3 weeks at #1, not particularly surprising as its streaming numbers are still increasing. Alex Warren gave it a good shot and climbs to #2 with his expanded album. Tyler, The Creator hit #1 last time with his mid-week strategy but this time has to settle for #4. Jessie Murph scores her first ever top 50 album at a not too shabby #12, while ROLE MODEL also shows up for the first time at #44

I'm surprised to say the KPop Demon Hunters climbs are still healthy again, so I can't rule out "Golden" from the top spot if these trends continue. Saja Boys actually have more top 10 hits than HUNTR/X now because "Soda Pop" has leapfrogged over "How It's Done", a very unlucky #11 peak if it remains that way. In the world of actual K-Pop, BLACKPINK have lived up to their usual tendency to utilise strong YouTube views to debut a little higher than projected. For a second week, the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack is #1. They manage to fend off new albums from 3 different former #1 artists, most notably Justin Bieber, whose only previous stumble was releasing "Changes" on the same week as a new Tame Impala album. The relative trajectory on streaming of the two albums suggests this gulf will only increase next week. Also missing out is Travis Scott and Wet Leg. Prior to this, the only appearance Wet Leg ever had in the ARIA top 50 was the single week their first album spent at #1. A bit lower down we've got Giveon scoring his highest charting album ever. If the new rules were already in place, he would have debuted at #11 instead.

It's possible but I think both songs have started losing a bit of steam lately. Older stuff might be exceptions to the rules, but I feel like at any point, you can pull back the Spotify charts from 2 years ago and see a lot of seemingly immortal songs that you've forgotten about because they just slipped away without fanfare. Imagine telling someone even just a year ago that "Someone You Loved" would be out of the top 200 for months, and that a surprise return of Lewis Capaldi with fanfare and a #1 single would jolt the song back up...to briefly matching the numbers it was managing in 2024. I think it's really hard for new hits to build up throwback appeal, so they do eventually just slip away once they're no longer at the forefront of 'current' hits.

It'll have its eye on tied 2nd longest next week, and I strongly suspect it'll get there, though it's beset on all sides by rising contenders, so the week after that could be in jeopardy, or it'll just hang on with no problems as the incumbent advantage comes to play. "Golden" climbs to #2 and since I don't get paid in Twitter impressions I won't tell you that it is or isn't real K-Pop and whether it's the highest charting one of all time. I'll just say that "Pink Venom" and "APT." both hit #1, and "Dynamite" made #2 and let you make your own decisions. We're on the cusp of having many demon hunters and hunted demons in the top 10, and in the midst of all this, "Beautiful Things" gets knocked out at the very funny tally of 69 weeks in the top 10. The record remains "Heat Waves" with a considerably less funny 88 weeks. I didn't mention "Love Me Not" finally rising to #2 last week but it just popped up on shuffle while I type this so this is my iTunes Smart Playlist engineered reminder to acknowledge that even though it falls this week. With only 6 days to accumulate the numbers, Drake sans 21 Savage is sneakin into the top 50. That 7th day likely would have pushed him into the top 40 and maybe the top 30, but we'll never know. PinkPantheress gets her 2nd top 50 hit with "illegal", and I just want to shout out that her new song with Danny L Harle is an almighty banger. Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" is usually at home around the #200 mark so it hasn't spent very long on the chart, and makes its first ever top 50 entry. Rumi and company reach the top spot with the first soundtrack to go to #1 since "Barbie", and the first animated one since "Encanto". For the 3rd time, a Lorde album drops to #2 in its second week ("Solar Power" dropped to #9). I was constantly mentioning before how Sabrina Carpenter has the default #1 album since there were 5 songs from that album in the Spotify top 200. Now it's still the default #1 album with only 3 songs in the top 200, and that 3rd one is close to falling out itself. This is because that's still an amount that can't be competed with. Technically Teddy Swims still has 3 songs, so the gap in position between the two demonstrates the power of the 4th tracks and then some, very interesting. Sydney punk band Fangz arrive in the top 10 for the very first time. If the new rules were in place already, they'd instead debut at #6. If you want a reality check on the Oasis stocks elsewhere, Australia scarcely is aware of songs of theirs that aren't "Wonderwall", their only #1 hit, and only top 10 hit. The only exception might be whenever Cal Ah Chee kicks goals at the Gabba, fingers crossed on Friday. They'll probably climb more when they make it over here, but for now their compilation makes the top 50 for the first time ever.

Makes it feel more inevitable that something will eventually come along and go the distance, since the required longevity has effectively just been pulled off, just needs a little more luck next time.

Once again you can lock in the next week because there's no competition and it doesn't even look like wavering. Last time BLACKPINK came back they scored a #1 hit, so maybe that'll happen again, who knows? In the meantime we're dealing with fictional K-Pop single releases, as Rumi, Zoey & Mira make their triumphant entrance in the top 10. I watched the movie because I never want to repeat any past bewilderment I've had with these soundtrack phenomena while actively choosing not to answer the questions myself. Those demonic Saja Boys follow closely behind them and nearly end the never-ending second top 10 stint of "Beautiful Things", but it looks like they will next week as they all appear to be on the rise again. Things are also getting pretty gnarly as KATSEYE get their first ever top 50 entry. Lorde scores a 4th #1 album. Maybe there was risk of competition from KPop Demon Hunters but trust the repeat offender, I think she always gets the top spot without fear. As the Sword of Damocles hangs over many such albums, we look to Pitbull to pull up while he still can, and he gets a slight new peak this week at #6. Free from fear is Teddy Swims and we'll watch tentatively to see if this is one of those albums that vanishes on week 2 or if we'll be watching it vault into the top 10 in a couple of months because of the incoming Gommage. I have been playing Expedition 33 lately and you know I'm gonna be rinsing this joke. The F1 movie is out and helped Tate McRae get back into the top 10, while the album itself also arrives in the top 20. I help type up new release schedules every week and constantly see album compilations that I'm never going to think about after that moment, but sometimes they actually chart, and so The Boss arrives this week with one. After nearly 2 years, The Kid LAROI's album has finally gotten a vinyl release, which gets it back into the top 50. I was going to say it'll be the last time because that's a solid pun, but it will get to dance around for a month or so after Logan's Run: Extreme Edition so maybe it might even hang around a little.
