This probably warrants some asterisks or specifications. I don't believe "Animal" is actually the most popular song this past week. I believe the collective streams for the group's new "WILD" EP have been collated together under one total and "Animal" has taken the honours as either the previous or current highest standing (I wouldn't have been surprised if "Hootie Frutti" debuted ahead of it though). Though ARIA have on occasion renamed chart entries to the EPs to reflect this (Lorde's "The Love Club EP" being a noteworthy example), they have not so it's going to leave a confusing legacy. Personally I'm just disappointed we've missed out on a funny chart situation where we've had a "WILD" EP go to #1 on both charts, as Troye Sivan managed it with his also all-caps "WILD" EP about a decade ago. It's a strange outcome that probably doesn't affect anything unless Ella Langley starts accumulating some record breaking numbers and we have to look back on this novelty week affecting her legacy. "Man I Need" continues to shorten the gap very slowly, never count it out. Tame Impala also scores a second top 10 hit (although The Wiggles' cover of "Elephant" also hit the top 10) with "Loser". Fremantle also lost again on the weekend although they have the excuse for now that it was a dead rubber. They've got a week off so there's time for a more auspicious Tame Impala song to take over. Might I recommend "Desire Be Desire Go"? Adéla missed her opportunity to hit the ARIA top 50 when it was the ARIANA top 50 and then didn't get in the week after, but she gets her lucky break with "Ain't In LA" this week. Katy Perry got taken off the chart as is tradition and was replaced by one of the oldest possible songs in the process, which is also tradition. It is interesting to note that Mac Miller's "Cinderella" remains on the chart after 11 weeks, suggesting that ARIA have a contingency ruling for songs that never charted before and will possibly let them thrive for the full 105 weeks. Ravyn Lenae continues to flirt this rule every week with "Love Me Not", a song I was well aware of over 2 years ago at this point. Phoebe Bridgers scores her first ever #1 album this week. She previously got to #12 with her last album, and also got to #3 as part of boygenius. If you think you've been waiting a long time for a new Phoebe Bridgers album, then let me introduce you to Peking Duk who have been dropping singles of note since around 2013, some of which became very big chart hits. The idea of a Peking Duk album was an always distant myth, but sure enough it arrives and lands at #6, just shy of their highest ever ARIA Chart position. It's also a little bit lower than Keli Holiday's album earlier this year, and it certainly is very interesting that the thousands upon thousands of people who had thoughts and feelings about that one have been very silent about this one, almost as if they were slaves to the algorithm. Jungle just narrowly get a new high on the album chart having previously gotten to #10 with the album that has "Keep Moving" on it, what a banger. They're just ahead of long standing quirky singer Kate Miller-Heidke who charts an 8th album to date. Speaking of notable Aussies, we've got Phil Jamieson with a solo album in the top 20. His first solo album just narrowly missed the top 50 so this is a new height for him in this context. You might better know him as the always fascinating frontman of Grinspoon. Recently he's been in the news because he's had a serious back issue that's caused him to cancel shows. Charting for the first time is Grace Cummings, who's been around for several albums now, but this is the first one that's been on my radar, some good singles! There's a new King Gizzard album and you never know where they're gonna turn up until the chart comes out. Australian punk band The Hard-Ons have returned for the second time this year with a collaborative release, this time with punk legend Jerry A from Poison Idea. The Script are falling a tad short of past performances, while Ocean Alley sneak in with a belated entry for one of their earlier EPs, which got a physical release recently.

It's pretty lazily doing what it needs to do at this point. "Rein Me In" has taken back the runner up spot so it's hard to say how close this is now. After weeks at #11, "Boston" finally cracks the top 10. We've also got an Australian hit song again, with Tame Impala's "Loser" entering at #11. This is potentially a cursed song, because it was released on the same weekend that Kevin Parker's beloved Fremantle Dockers got eliminated from finals last year, and they also logged only their 3rd ever loss of the year immediately after the song started climbing the charts again. They're very well positioned to get their first ever AFL premiership but if they lose it, I blame "Loser", which will probably climb into the top 10 next week. Steve Lacy is also benefitting from Spider-Man and gets his second ever top 50 hit. Olivia Rodrigo returns to #1 for a 5th week. As much as I'd like to dive into a peculiar set of debuts, I'm still going through it and don't have it in me. Rowena Wise is a good artist I've been listening to more lately that you've likely not heard of.

I'll be honest yeah, it's hard for me to really be certain what the data is like, just going off extrapolations of data & hunches myself! What we'd want to do with it probably is largely affected by what we want to see on the chart, which is admittedly why I'm always quick to discourage a lot of rash ideas because I feel like based on what's been suggested, the end result probably makes the chart worse for that person! A bit like when we all might just conveniently overlook favourable playlisting/algorithms boosting our favourites, the naked reality would expose that truth in a way that can't be ignored. Or otherwise my strong feeling is still that it doesn't really move the needle in many distinct ways. Life if the OCC put in a streaming cap vs. life if they didn't, and it's the same picture both times. In many senses this all comes down to a debate on whether or not we think new music deserves a leg up purely for the fact that it's new, and how willing we are to suspend disbelief for it on the chart. Like, I feel like Spotify's trending charts capture this kind of fast pace/no lingering nature, but do any of us want to treat it like the real thing? Probably not because it's just too confusing, hard to understand, and doesn't correlate with our realistic expectations of what should be charting where. It leaves the only paths as chaos for the sake of chaos, or objective blandness (which I'll admit is interesting in its own way but that's just me). A matter of whether there is merit to tinkering with the chart to replicate its form of the past, or to leave it to continue to climb to new extremes for better or worse.

I feel like that sort of thing would turn it more to farce, which prevents it from being particularly interesting. Like sure, it is interesting what got to #1 in Canada before Billboard took over the chart in 2007, but is a chart that's telling me "Blue Orchid" by The White Stripes was more popular than "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey very useful?

I feel like the separation of 'active' and 'passive' streams as many people swing it is just one of those things that sounds great on the outside, but the more you think about it, the more it collapses in terms of the realistic benefits or outcomes. Same going for limiting people to 1 listen or anything like that. I don't think there's any tangible evidence that it'll actually resemble the working, exciting chart people expect, it'd just collapse the numbers unilaterally. If this does anything on the whole, it's that it makes it a lot easier to create unnatural chart runs, either via those first day curiosity streams being massively bolstered, or just anyone who wants to fudge the numbers via nefarious methods now having a lower bar for entry. Maybe I'm wrong but is this how some people use Spotify? They just look up every specific song they want to listen to one by one and add to queue? Of course they're gonna be massively outnumbered by the people who just set it and go. I don't even think that's necessarily a problem either. As I type this, I'm currently listening to a playlist I put together and just put on shuffle. By some definitions this is the valid path, but to others, it's a passive heresy and I couldn't possibly enjoy these songs as much as the steady right click/left clicker (I love these songs). I will note however just for a point of interest. A few weeks ago, lastfm had its connection with Spotify recalibrate. All you have to do is go to your account's connection page and put it back up, but the consequence of this is that every artist's daily scrobbles have plummeted to about 20-30% of what it was before (PSA if you haven't checked your account in a while, you probably stopped scrobbling!). I don't think any artist has escaped this, but K-Pop artists seem to have fared a little better than most, so make of that what you will. All those massive hit songs you've loved in the last decade that defined your moment were inevitably being powered by those supposedly passive listeners to a likely similar extent. I don't believe the OCC ever feels the need to comment on this because it's just one of those 'missing the big picture' ideas that aren't worth the bother refuting, because reaching out like that only makes more threads of bother come up, now that it's clear you can badger this out of them.

We're in full chill mode at the moment as the top songs aren't really making big moves one way or the other. There should be an influx of activity thanks to Ariana Grande's new album, but I suspect she won't be challenging the top spot. Behind a top 7 that hasn't changed, KATSEYE have scored their first ever top 10 hit with "Animal". It's hard to say if it's sticking the landing yet but it hasn't had the typical second week collapse, so it might stick around in the top 10. What is making the top 10 this week is "Dai Dai" which with a Spotify peak of #26 (currently #45) is giving me major flashbacks to when "She Wolf" was always far higher on the chart than on iTunes. It's Burna Boy's first ever top 10 hit too. The only other new arrival this week is from Morgan Wallen, who manages to land right next to his recent collaborator Ella Langley, with his new single. This one isn't sticking the landing, it looks like. Charli XCX scores her 3rd #1 album this week. None of the singles have made any real chart impact over here though "Camera" does enter the Bubbling Under chart this week. She lands just ahead of Amy Shark who also has 3 #1 albums, and roughly that many houses. She's recently made her acting debut alongside Russell Crowe, as we all expected. Laufey is touring the country currently and vaults back into the top 10. She has an interesting itinerary where she's going Melbourne->Brisbane->Sydney despite Sydney being located geographically in the middle of those two (I should also note that she did play Perth & Adelaide too, not everyone does this). The Strokes previous album was the first one to ever miss the top 10 but they're back on the rebound with their latest. I read "Meet Me In The Bathroom" recently so now I know too much about the things that Julian & Albert do on tour (Fab seems cool though). Local singer Budjerah has his first ever chart appearance with his album this week. About 5 years ago he turned up on a remix of an Ed Sheeran song that allowed commercial radio to play it and count to their local quotas. Tyla has her second charting album (this year even) and a new high for her. For once I can't say it's because of the new rules. Shania Twain falls a fair bit short of her usual top 10 prospects, while Waterparks & Body Type chart for the first time. Body Type are a cool band from Sydney I think. Alyssa Grace also sneaks through with her first album chart appearance as her single continues to climb.

Strongly agree of course and I think in this sense it's always worth analysing it from the opposite end of the equation. Like, sure, gone are those hallmarks of a hugely dominant #1 single that everyone knows (not necessarily the case in the first place, but hear, hear), but what were those hallmarks? Hearing the song in the shops? On the radio? Close associates talking about it? It poses the question of whether those signifiers really exist for any modern popular song nowadays and suggests that something must be most encapsulating that in the present day even if the degree is very small. Or alternatively, we have to consider that these factors correlate to a successful hit, but they're not actually the components that made the chart sales happen. Once upon a time it was people buying CD singles, now it's people listening to the song privately. Unless you stalk the CD section at the shops, both of these are largely invisible actions. Someone can very actively listen to the current #1 single in their own home without it making a ripple, and that doesn't make it any less valid. Like I just don't buy the 'this song has been #1 for months on end and no one's heard of it' angle. That just tells me those people have largely cut themselves out of the conversation, which is very easy to do. I'd spend long periods of time not listening to top 40 radio and being oblivious to these hit songs I had no reason to ever hear in my teens (and only hear them afterwards because I became a chart nerd). Not that I was ever buying singles around that time ever, but it just meant the conversation was happening without me, and that's fine. It'd be disingenuous to act like the charts have to go through one's own purview to be validated, only to make it very clear from the outset that it's not even something someone wants to go along with. Like skipping out on watching a sport for a decade and suddenly being confused at why the biggest names are ones you've never heard of. Being baffled that Sinner & Zverev are higher ranked than Djokovic when I don't even know what they look like. (Also the longer you spend outside the top 40 environment, the harder it's gonna be to get back into it. It's specifically pushed forward by the people whose very taste it has shaped).

I had a dream today that a new Taylor Swift album arrived and flooded the top 10 but still couldn't unseat Ella. This probably would not eventuate as I feel like we're reaching the tipping point when any new rising hit will quickly storm for lack of competition. Case in point, that new KATSEYE single is rapidly climbing the Spotify chart, now up to #6 without a potential Monday boost to account for. Maybe that's one to watch. Something looks like it'll be forced out of the top 10 though because Stella Lefty & Shakira are making serious pushes. "Dai Dai" is now Shakira's highest charting song since 2007's "Beautiful Liar". Previously, Gracie Abrams helped stop her own song from reaching the top 50 by blocking it with one of her own. Fret not as she's more than made the gap this time and has both "Look At My Life" and "Good Reason" reaching the top 50 for the first time. It what appears to be a good week for labels keeping up with what's going on, Fat Papi & Whiskey Myers score their first ever chart entries with songs that don't appear to have been on the survey before but certainly could have. I'll also note Whiskey Myers because that song is well over a decade old now, so it'll be interesting to see what happens with it in 10 weeks time if it's still charting then. Unlike "Earrings", it does appear on the On Replay chart, so it'll probably be business as usual. Gracie Abrams scores her second #1 album this week. Her last one managed 3 weeks at the top which will be a tall order to replicate. Metalcore band Motionless In White, who notably come from the same town that the US version of The Office is set in, score their first ever top 10 album this week, having made the top 50 with 4 of their albums previously. Bella Kay previously debuted seemingly just via streams last week, this week she has a considerable boost. Steve Lacy doesn't have a big hit single in tow this time around (I'm really enjoying "the feeling" though), but manages another top 20 album a little below his previous one. We've also got some Australian upstarts I've also only heard of for the first time this year and been enjoying. Holly Hebe for catchy indie pop vibes and Swapmeet for catchy indie rock vibes. The UK can have their own metal bands as well, and Loathe chart for the first time this week, much higher than their home country but that might just be chart rules in play. For the 9th time out of 10, I'm pleased to report that Drake's two albums are next to each other, going from both just barely being out of the top 50 to barely being in it.

I'll just put forward that the charts, the #1 single, whether it matters or not is entirely up to you. By all accounts it's just frivolous record keeping that can serve as a time capsule for future generations, though it's been clear for a long time that those future generations are more than happy to pick & choose both within and out those bounds. Some of the smartest people I know have no interest in music past the neoclassicism era, while another set of the smartest people I know get deeply invested in all the works of Olivia Rodrigo. If you have the time and desire to entertain yourself then it can be with whatever you want it to be, to whatever degree you want. Maybe you're interested in what year has the most #100 debuts, or which artist has the most songs that have spent at least 10 weeks on the chart, or even just the airplay chart, the world's your oyster. The only thing is that we tend to be very self-serving about this, which is where the conflict arrives. To say 'It doesn't matter anymore' is code for 'I've lost interest', and that means they've either found a new distraction, or the aspects they tended to enjoy no longer serve them. There isn't a single moment when the charts became obsolete, but if someone new you don't like stole your record away, you can bet you're gonna count backwards to find a viable moment to discredit them. I do the same thing too. Last year there was a footy stat that I was deeply invested in, purely because one of my favourite players was leading it by a country mile. This year they missed some games and aren't playing as well, so they're not leading the stat, and I've convinced myself it doesn't matter as much. Now my fixation is seeing if my team can get themselves off the bottom rung of the average tackles leaderboard of the season, because that's just the thing I find interesting right now. If someone tells me they're interested in the charts, more so than I am, I'm not going to get all uppity at them for finding something interesting just because 'It used to be better' or 'It used to matter'. Let them enjoy it. In the past week I've gotten up early to watch a women's football practice game that I've seen all of 3 people talk about, I broke one of my old uncontested world records in a niche category for a niche video game 3 times in the space of an hour, and I've continued to spend hours working on my music blog that only a handful of my friends actively read. I'm having a great time. Finding something to be invested in is a lot more fun than lamenting that no one cares.

This is a bit more than usual but it pretty much always does at least 70-80k a day during off season "Snowman" by Sia actually performs the best for Christmas songs on most days (including yesterday) (I did a bsky post about it last year)

Unpopular opinion but I think if ACR must be, then the current system is fine. Only thing I'd change is maybe bumping up the starting point to 15 or 20 weeks. 10 weeks just seems way too early now, though I suppose if we take it as a seemingly random force for when it strikes, then maybe that's fine too, just unlucky for those who go early. With regards to songs that keep 'dodging' it, I think that's mostly also doing what it's supposed to do anyway. It should be shunting off songs that have clearly done their dance, the idea that "Rein Me In" should go that way while it's still #1 (or thereabouts) doesn't seem right to me. In general though, I think it's something that looks worse than it actually is because we quickly forget the songs that do move on. The songs that stay on SCR stay in the forefront, the others disappear and are no longer a going concern. Just looked at the chart on the week "Rein Me In" first went to #1, and there are a bunch of fairly old songs on SCR there, but all of them, bar "Everywhere" have since gone to ACR. You can get mad at Fleetwood Mac for seemingly cheating the system, but I always say it's better to look at ACR as a vague extraction machine that gets most of what it aims for, and that's what pushes new songs up the chart. A small handful of songs out of dozens not going on ACR isn't really a problem unless you just really don't like those particular songs I feel. (I also find it generally unsatisfying as someone who wants to see the audience move on from songs, not to just be in a state of denial where I'm noting records of chart history they're not in, even though I know deep down, that's what's popular).

Are you talking about the frequency of older songs to get reset now? Because I don't really see that as an issue. They largely come and go. The main point I was making is that even if you were to take them all out of the chart, you'll likely just find the same slow crawl because there aren't enough also-ran hits to keep up with the super stars and fill in the gaps. Can't be fixed by just removing things.

If they must, I'd hope they strongly consider their approach, what they hope to achieve with it, and what's likely to happen. A short-sighted solution will likely muck things up and eventually find a new way to be unsatisfying. I strongly recommend keeping an eye on the ARIA Chart, not just because I write a short column about it every week, but because it shows you a world where old songs are largely gone and instead you just get molasses because what small few songs break through have nothing to keep them in check. Not that I think the success of "Rein Me In" warrants changing the rules. Ironically it's sewing the seeds of the OCC's tampering because ACR has actually allowed it to have a longer run at #1 than it would have otherwise (I think). To stamp it out is to not recognise its achievement, and feels like it's more in service of hanging onto old records that want the esteem of never being broken, but only do so because we create a system where they're not allowed to be broken. I think the beauty of the chart is that it always reflects the consumption habits of its time. To distort that is to misrepresent reality and paint a worse picture of what actually went down.

Just a reminder that the effect of a hard-cap would probably not accomplish what you expect. There's no particularly strong evidence to suggest that these older hits are actually resting on egregiously greater person by person streams, and in many cases it might be the opposite. These songs chart so well because they're so well known that they have a huge audience to bounce around the burden of maintaining their streaming numbers. New music is generally starting from the ground up and has a much smaller potential audience to utilise. An audience that is very likely jumping off them to hear the latest new stuff (it's me, just about to finish all of New Music Friday as I type this, I will never hear most of these songs ever again). I've made and now nested several posts about this! (Today's thrilling update, "Ordinary"'s ratio has gone from 10 to 10.5 in the last 8 months) For similar reasons, the notion of these older songs having more passive listeners is something I'm not convinced of. I'd sooner believe it's a lot of new music that's overstepping reality thanks to aggressive algorithms and label pushes to get people to try out these new sounds (and also some songs of late whose success looks very suspicious).

Cameron Whitcomb scores his first ever top 50 hit with a song I suspect would be vaulting into the top 5 if people were responding to new hits like they once did, but maybe that'll still happen in a couple of months. Olivia Rodrigo returns to #1 for a 4th week. She sees off The Rolling Stones who debut at #2 after having a #1 album a few years ago. Given Mick Jagger was at the World Cup semis last week, probably not the worst experience he's had lately. The rare return of a hit TV Soundtrack comes as "Heated Rivalry" lands surprisingly high at #3. Bring Me The Horizon bring in a new version of their first album, one that never made the top 50 before. It's a great week for pattern enjoyers as we have the long awaited return of The Temper Trap. Their first album in a decade gets them to #9 and I haven't heard it but some of the singles have been very good. Their last two albums made it to #1 but their debut "Conditions" (the one with most of the songs people know) also got to #9, symmetry and whatnot. MCR don't have quite as fortunate a time with their re-issue, as their last album lands just a little lower than it originally debuted in 2010. Jack White trends a little up on recent solo performances though he did once get as high as #2. Future continues his unpredictable performance given he had a #1 album a few years back. Melbourne band The Velvet Club chart for the first time, as does Dylan Wright, oddly. Dylan won Australian Idol a couple of years ago and had already been releasing music for a decade at that point. He's been nominated for an ARIA Award, but only now getting some commercial kudos. Adam Lambert misses the top 10 for the first time, landing just ahead of Bella Kay charting for the first time.

I used to read last.fm's listener charts they'd put out every week around 2009-2012-ish, these were generally young listeners who gravitated to new albums & new artists (so like Vampire Weekend or Interpol would do to the charts what Taylor Swift does now), but even with that audience, the most listened to artists always had The Beatles, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, album cycle or not, while "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Mr. Brightside" and some others would be in the chart week in, week out. They're just the songs & artists that nearly everyone knows and get a huge leg up over anyone new. Every artist in the current Spotify listeners top 20 has been famous since at least around 2018, if not much further back. I also just think that new music listening is spread out so wide. Some of my friends and I have been making year end top 100 lists for many years and any two of us will probably have at most half a dozen songs in common, but that number used to be much higher. Music hasn't gotten worse, just less universal, so like you say, I think most people on an individual level probably haven't changed much. You just won't notice if those millions of other people at their PCs and listening devices have taken a different fork in the road.

We once again are witnessing the slow and gradual tail-off for a song that arguably peaked two months ago but has nothing to replace it. In fact, the biggest activity near it is the rapid surge of "Ordinary", which seems to have benefitted from the annual quirk of July 1st. I do want to note here that "Riptide" once again climbed globally on this date, and while in the past it has plummeted in Aus/NZ, it actually climbed here as well. In the grand scheme of things, it's only about a 15% gain in streams but it could very well be enough of a boost to get the song to retire in the top 10 after breaking Glass Animals' 88 week record. Malcolm Todd also gets a new peak. sombr rapidly climbed as promised but looks to be going in the opposite direction next week. I accidentally overlooked mentioning the arrival of Shakira & Burna Boy's World Cup song last week. It's Shakira's first charting song in 12 years, and only the second time Burna Boy has made the top 50. Australia being bundled out by Egypt has not diminished the enthusiasm as the song climbs rapidly this week. There are no debuts this week but Ella Langley returns with "weren't for the wind" at a new peak, though we're potentially about to see it removed from the chart in a few weeks. Madonna now has 13 #1 albums in Australia. Her record of hitting the top spot has been patchy outside of some occasional strong runs. One such run was when she hit #1 with "Confessions On a Dancefloor", and the next 3 studio albums after that. We'll have to wait and see if we get "Hard Candy II" and run it all back again. Sienna Spiro achieves her first album chart appearance this week and smashes all the way in at #3, much higher than she's ever reached on the singles chart to date. Deep Purple chart for the first time since their 2020 album "Whoosh!" with "Splat!", proving that the path to success is by emulating the episode titling format of niche late 2000s slasher/mystery "Harper's Island". Ken Carson also charts for the first time, though unlike Sienna Spiro, has actually released several at this point. The Neighbourhood also come in for the first time, thanks to a re-issue. I get what they're trying to do, but the title is a bit ill-advised.

I think the prevalence of older hit songs is a smokescreen for the real issue here: the rapid collapse of the very notion of the 'top 40 music fan'. It's a self-sustaining ecosystem that invites regular curiosities and regulates longevity through a self-contained audience that latches onto everything around the same time. What we've got at the moment is a look into a world where this isn't quite the same anymore. You still get those hits, but an audience that doesn't keep up as attentively as before, so a 16 week #1 article can be met with online comments completely unaware it existed, and in the process, giving it a new lease on life as it extends its potential audience to this day. The big stars are still big, but largely sustained on their big audiences who serve in a more isolated form of that top 40 fan, and also in a manner where the cult of the star matters more than the credentials of the song itself (eg Taylor Swift sustaining longevity through the exposure of a song being at the top of her Spotify artist page). But here's the catch! We do still have that eager breed of music fan, evolved from the top 40 fan or otherwise that are still listening to new music and latching onto it in the same way. In fact, part of the problem is that they're all doing it at the same time and that's why most new songs peak on the first day. I could imagine a new chart system that works under the manner of this kind of listener (there's an Alternative chart I see posted online every now and then which seems to fit the bill), but they'll be blistered away by the sheer noise of the most popular artists. Artists like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish etc are at a point where their entire discographies are incapable of dipping below a certain level of daily streams, and that's a level that most artists will never hit on their best day. The more exclusionary systems you create, the further you run towards just making something akin to an artist chart, where the latest single by a noteworthy artist becomes glued to the top end of the chart only until it's the newest member of the excluded club. I always recommend looking at the ARIA New Music chart for an idea of how this plays out. It's an extreme example where everything drops off after 4 months (and there's a 3 track limit), but you're already witnessing that future in action. Olivia Rodrigo's songs are glued to the top 10 and just too far ahead to ever really fall out until their allotted time is up. The chart goes down to a Drake song at #20 which I doubt is even one of the top 100 biggest songs right now overall. The enormous gaps these exclusions create mean that there's hardly any movement week to week. Effectively you'd just be creating a chart that's as 'boring' as the one it's designed to fix, but without the credibility and intrigue that comes with actually being the most popular songs that week. (Also not loving the excess of AI slop that keeps making the official chart only because ACR widens the opening. Given the suspect nature of a lot of that stuff's popularity, you're also inviting the possibility that real human activity, as dull as it might be, is replaced by a system where it's like Twitter and just bots talking to other bots)

Might be the Goomba fallacy in play, but there's an irony here because I so often see the implication that an old song reset is 'unnecessary' if it's not for the means of a new chart peak.

These things have a habit of looping back around algorithmically. You start to see/hear it more and think about it more in consequence (and then especially notice it the next time around). Unless there's more to it I've missed, look at the UK & Australia's reaction to Miley Cyrus's "Party In The U.S.A." last week. America blasts it because it's the 4th of July, and then two days later, we all start hearing/thinking about the song more and it inexplicably bounces up. More than ever, the chart just reflects what we're hearing, whether or not we're going out of our way to drive it.

I suppose we can't rule out Malcolm Todd sliding to #1 one day just on sheer collapse of everything around him (something similar happened when "Pumped Up Kicks" hit the top spot). Of note this week, sombr is back and I suspect will be ready next week to spring up the chart. Gracie Abrams doesn't quite make it in with her new single, but including "Hit The Wall" just after it on the single has helped that bounce back in instead. Olivia Rodrigo secures a 3rd week at #1. This surpasses the two weeks at #1 managed by "GUTS" but there's quite a way to go to match "SOUR"'s 8 week reign. Coming closest to stopping her this week is the latest album from Muse. It was a little surprising to me when their previous album went to #1 as their hold on the top spot looked to have finally looked gone when "Simulation Theory" only hit #7. My early impression (as someone with a major teenage Muse phase) is that this new one is their best album in quite some time though, maybe that'll be the momentum to get them back to #1 or maybe just pick a better week next time. The Pretty Reckless actually score their first ever top 10 album this week, the curiosity to me is that they weren't doing better when they actually managed a charting single. You could also possibly say something similar about Kita Alexander except that she wasn't releasing albums way back when she first broke out in the mid-2010s. She did release one in 2024 but it didn't make the top 50, so call it a long awaited breakthrough as this artist who reached #51 on the singles chart nearly a decade ago finally has a top 50 album. This has never been a going concern for Katie Noonan I imagine, who scored a #1 album way back in 2002 as part of her band 'george'. This is her first solo chart entry in about a decade, and from what I can tell, might be her first album of original material in nearly two, as she's largely thrived on singing covers of jazz standards and the like. The most peculiar entry this week might just be from Toby Fox though. He picks up his first ever chart entry seemingly just on streams and downloads, and makes DELTARUNE (specifically Ch. 5) I believe just the 3rd video game to ever chart a soundtrack in Australia. The only others I can recall are Minecraft and Life is Strange: True Colors (because it was an Angus & Julia Stone album). I'd love to be all quippy about this because I adore UNDERTALE but I've only ever played the first two chapters of DELTARUNE. Justin Bieber also has a live album and Go-Jo who once represented Australia in Eurovision gets in with his debut album. Disappointingly, Drake's two albums have finally separated on the chart for the first time since debuting.

Sure, that's fine, I don't have a horse in that race, but you're positing Sam Fender and/or his team complaining to the OCC to prevent it from happening. Seems like an attack on character based on speculation, thus, getting mad/smug about the made up version of Sam Fender in your head.
