It will very likely not be #1 next week but may still return afterwards. You may be aware that "Patient Zero" is set to hold the #1 spot in the UK thanks to physical sales. As per usual, I have no idea of knowing if the same practice applies to Australia, as we've historically had things a little mucked up, possibly because of time zone consideration, I'm not sure. I'm staring at the failure to get "Opalite" to #1 here. So she might go back to #1 here, but otherwise, it's Olivia Dean's for the taking as she's in Australia at the moment with her Melbourne & Sydney shows wrapped up and she'll be playing in Brisbane in a few hours I think. Ella Langley has lost a bit of momentum lately so I really don't know who might win out after this week either. ADÉLA is making decent progress but still work to be done there. I guess to Olivia Dean's favour, there's evidence of touring bumps to last strongly for an additional week, as noted by Noah Kahan climbing again (though that could be attributed to Taylor Swift falling behind). He also has a new entry this week unrelated to this. Yung Lean gets his first ever ARIA Chart entry this week via "STORM" (both versions combined, I guess). I'm obliged to point out that "Ginseng Strip 2002" probably should have charted but wasn't included in its prime (I don't think it would have made the top 50, but top 100 seems a good shot). Olivia Dean returns to #1 on the album chart for a 14th week. Ahead of the usual suspects, she heads a top 10 that's stuffed with re-issues. I guess chart credentials should make The Beatles be considered a usual suspect, but "Rubber Soul" hasn't appeared on the chart since 2009 when it popped in at #41 for a week. We've then got a double dose of V.Spy V.Spy, the Australian punk band also known as Spy vs. Spy or The Spies. Their heyday is largely before my time in the '80s so I don't know them as well as I probably should, but they're scoring their first and second top 10 albums this week, as their first two albums have been re-issued to new peaks this week. Drake's also got a deluxe version of "HABIBTI" which tragically means that it's the furthest thing from being adjacent to "MAID OF HONOUR". West Australians Old Mervs are striking while the iron is hot by releasing another album only a year after the last, and it's their 3rd to hit the top 50. Just behind them we've got the first ever solo entry for Ella Hooper, famously the singer of Killing Heidi who were just about the biggest Australian band circa turn of the millennium. She's not the only solo entrant this week as we've also got Glenn Shorrock of Little River Band fame and numerous other bands I'm less familiar with.

It means that she has the most #1 hits of any artist since The Beatles, but is a long way away from matching them. The new tracks all land in the top 5, but Ella Langley holds the #2 spot this week. I will not say that "Patient Zero" can't get another week at #1 simply because the looming physicals could drop at any week on the Australian chart, but it also might just hold on this week anyway. We've now arrived upon Olivia Dean's Australian tour so it's not impossible for "Man I Need" to get back to #1 but her tour is a whole bunch of distant dates so the concentration might not be strong enough. The promised Noah Kahan climbs happen and get both tracks into the top 30, a bit of a step away from matching the top 20 peaks of "The Great Divide" and "Doors" for now. Perhaps the most interesting thing this week is the arrival of Karan Aujla for his first ever top 50 hit. ARIA have brought back their classic reverse alphabetical crediting which you can also see on "Golden", but it is also a first top 50 hit for MXRCI, and generally a big breakthrough for a Punjabi hit song in the era of YouTube streams counting to the chart. Taylor Swift returns to #1 on the album chart for the first time this year, and bumping up the album's tally to 8 weeks. Leading the debuts this week is Julia Jacklin who scores her 3rd top 10 peak. Reaching the top 10 for the first time is Nessa Barrett, who previously just missed the top 50 with her first two albums and earlier this year, charted an EP in the top 50. Nothing But Thieves are building up a tidy set of peaks as they've now hit #8, #9, #10 & #12 with their last 4 albums. Tinashe hits the top 50 for the first time and even sneaks into the top 10. Leon Bridges has his highest chart appearance in nearly a decade, while original Australian Idol runner up Shannon Noll misses the top 10 for the first time. He's still living up to his original destiny because he has the 2nd highest Australian album this week. Another artist with 'Banks' in their name has dropped as metalcore band Banks Arcade score their first top 50 album.
  3. I'd also add that most new releases in general don't chart but does that make them meaningless failures that aren't worth acknowledging? Absolutely not. Often times it sets up the foundation for future slow burning success that we can't really quantify because it's subtle and compounding. Even if it's not that, who cares? Music releases of any stature can be a great talking point for any number of reasons, and a source of great enthusiasm for many. I've seen enough live shows by bands and artists who have never been close to the charts who still get an uproarious reception because we're all individuals, not a collective mass who only care when the whole country/world does.
  4. I'll contend that there's a very obvious future #1 in "Patient Zero" right now because it's not officially there yet 😄

It looks like it won't really get a run going on this time though because Taylor Swift appears to be playing the interrupter again. This is the second time she's done it to this particular song because "I Knew It, I Knew You" also knocked it off #1 (nearly a second time when physicals got it back to #1 but Ella was only #3 that week). Adéla has simultaneously scored her first and second top 10 hits, I don't know how you decide which one comes first. Amongst all the mostly steady usuals, HUGEL has a hugel jump, and sombr re-enters with "My Body Isn't Ready" for the 3rd time. The song has only 4 times in its 15 week run not moved more than 10 places. Noah Kahan has a good week that includes "Willing and Able" returning to its old peak, which I presume will be smashed next week as he's been playing in Australia this week. On my way to the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, I walked past the line to his show at Rod Laver Arena that wasn't set to start for about 10 hours and there were already dozens of people there in the pouring rain. That reminds me, I need to update my signature again. Also on the touring front is Calvin Harris who is doing unprecedented numbers for an EDM act and has seen his catalogue flying up on the streaming charts. Most of that isn't seen here but it does provide a bolster to "Blessings" which finally cracks the top 50, having previously peaked at #61 like a year ago. She's been slowly ascending with successive releases, and now this week beabadoobee goes the whole way to get her first ever #1 album. It's also the first time she's ever gotten higher on the chart than when Powfu's "death bed" peaked at #5. This might come as a surprise as she outperforms the more famous star in Miley, but then she's never had two #1 albums in the same decade so perhaps this is just nature doing its regular course. Sydney punk band C.O.F.F.I.N. return with their 6th album, and second to chart. This time they've gotten considerably higher and land at #8. Also improving stocks is Lizzy McAlpine who has never had a top 50 debut before but instead opted for a very belated entry in the top 50 with her previous album after a vinyl re-release (as far as I could tell, "five seconds flat" never got counted on the chart so I have no idea how high it could have charted). Her new album makes the top 10 this week which also surpasses her #19 singles chart peak with "ceilings". I'm listening to the album right now and got tickets yesterday so I'm pretty stoked. US country singer Riley Green has never made the top 50 before but had a very long lasting bubbling hit with "you look like you love me". His latest album gets him his first. Members of the thrash big four Anthrax return with their first entry in a decade which is their second highest charting album ever. There's a peculiar first time entry for BIG NOTER, a rap metal group fronted by rapper Briggs, who you might know from his solo work or A.B. Original. I saw them supporting Karnivool last year when they only had two songs out but it was still a blast. Carly Rae Jepsen scores her 4th top 50 album and it's also her highest charting since 2012's "Kiss". Also getting her second highest charting album this week is Tove Lo who hasn't been sighted on the album chart since 2016. Beck has fared a bit better in the past though amusingly he arrives at the exact same debut as his last album this week. Five Finger Death Punch very slightly improve on their debut position of #46, while Alyssa Grace also returns with a slight new peak (previously reaching #45).
  6. I was at the game and it was great. Everyone around me seemed to be really enjoying it. Only just now got a chance to watch the uploaded performance (my phone is full of crappy zoomed in videos from way back in the nosebleeds, lol). Thought it was a very good choice of setlist. Was amused when it was largely spanning a single decade but then she put Padam & Loco-Motion back to back, a multi-generational gap lol. There was more Kylie to be heard in the final quarter of the game though, because there's a Brisbane player who gets On A Night Like This to play every time he kicks a goal, and he had 3 crucial late ones. Gotta give Kylie credit for getting us the win again ☺️

This is obviously because Nicole Kidman is Australian. Olivia Rodrigo notches a 6th week at #1 on the album chart.
  8. I understand that music is a form of escapism for many of us (and I count myself in that) and so having 'real world' consequences injected into it can feel disruptive, but it's important to remember that this is the whole point. In an ideal world, we could all harmoniously retreat into our vices and have a splendid time, but what we've learnt time and time again is that doing so will only numb us to the reality of what's going on. That reality is that many Palestinians are being murdered every day and if that's not confronting to you, it's because we've either built up our own wall, or had it built around us to not disrupt us from being cogs in that idyllic machine to allow people to be complacent and ignore it. Those walls help the more privileged among us to feign ignorance or just generally keep people from being radicalised because it doesn't affect their day to day life. Heck, you might even be put in a position where life is a day to day struggle to get by, and so you'll act and vote in the interests of yourself because empathy isn't high enough on your hierarchy of needs. We need these kinds of disruptions to get people talking and aware of the situation, because these very things happen because there isn't sufficient blowback from the population on people in power to convince them not to do it. For pretty much all of my life there's been some kind of horrific thing going on in and around the Middle East and the worst thing that we can do is see that as just inevitable and out of our control, that's exactly what these people at the helm want you to do. Given the volume of support I'm seeing for Macklemore, this is the perfect opportunity to take Kraft and his cronies to task. Ed Sheeran could even redeem himself if he's willing to better assess the situation, I don't think he actually lacks humility, he's just made the wrong move at this point in time and can potentially learn from it & make amends. We're witnessing what should be a widely unpopular regime get by, because the small minority who want & benefit from it do everything in their power to perpetuate it. We need to encourage those with a platform like Macklemore to use it, otherwise why are we giving them one?

It's heading up a very unchanged top 10 with the only question being whether or not "Loser" overtaking "the cure" counts as making the chart fresher or not. There is movement however. Adéla's new album has significantly bolstered her chart positions as "Ain't In LA" jumps up to the top 20. Zara Larsson has also very belatedly jumped into the top 20. I remember hearing that song this time last year and thinking it was a bit old then. For a new entry this week, we've got Ashe getting her second ever top 50 hit, and it's likely to be her highest charter next week. Behind her is HUGEL & co., which is a pertinent time for me to finally remember pointing out that the ARIA Charts banished AI generated music a few weeks ago. The ruling appears to be appropriately vibes based and all we can really say is that Josh Fawaz and his uninspired dance remakes are no longer welcome (not that he ever cracked the top 50). For several weeks now, "Movin' To The Sun" has been missing from all chart tracking and it wasn't clear if it was falling prey to this ruling as well, but it appears to have been let onto the chart for now. ARIA's rulings appear to draw the line at heavy AI assistance, where Josh Fawaz has an AI filtered vocal and also AI programmed drums credited in his meta-data, so there's a point of difference here. It gives Ultra Naté her first new top 50 hit since the late '90s. Angus & Julia Stone score their 3rd #1 album this week, which feels low to me, but they genuinely hadn't gotten to the top since 2014. Adéla scores her first ever albums chart entry, which possibly means that a lot of people just heard "KGB" for the first time. It was only a year ago that President charted for the first time but they're back and now sporting a top 10 finish. Charting for the first time is Ecca Vandal with her second album, which actually got released months ago but only just now got a full physical release. You might know her for featuring on Hilltop Hoods' top 20 hit "Exit Sign" in 2019, which might not necessarily prepare you for her often much louder rock bangers. Speaking of rock bangers, Airbourne are in fact still around, but depending on how you convert chart positions with different rules, might not be doing much better than they did in the UK despite being an Australian band. It could be worse, Natalie Imbruglia didn't even chart. Zara Larsson barely gets a new peak for her album by 1 spot, heading up a surprisingly lofty list of re-entries this week. Nemzzz gets his first ever chart entry in Australia.
  10. I feel like it's a moot point to do the song & dance about how 'no one's going to remember these songs in x years' because it ignores the often frivolous reasons people do remember songs (eg marketing or otherwise dumb things like TikToks), as well as saying more about a potentially large group of individuals and their active choice to strain themselves from the conversation (by not actively engaging with current hits) while refusing to actually cut themselves from it (by insisting on making these kinds of comments like it's the music's fault itself). It feels more likely to me that someone who doesn't know the song "Man I Need" probably swore off popular music because of a lifestyle change (ironically, getting married is a big one) or a more contentious hit song years prior, rather than Olivia Dean being the tipping point. But also it's incredibly easy to just say these things with little knockback because it'll take years to prove. It sounds witty in the moment, and might well be correct, but I'd sooner imagine someone broadly shaping their ideal reality over the truth, or boastfully declaring themselves to be right, than face any consequence for making a profoundly bad prediction. Also if you look at what the actual most popular songs of 2015 are now, I reckon it's a little different to what we all imagined at the time.

Olivia Dean still can't make up her mind and it might just swap around next week. Still nothing even coming close to pushing her down though. It's a big week for fairly old songs climbing a lot. "Midnight Sun" gets a new peak and one where I'm now comfortable in saying it didn't need new chart rules to get in. Bruno Mars recently announced a big stadium tour and has big jumps across the board. New entries, what are those? Alex Warren has a very long running #2 album but now he also has a #1 album. We shall see if he falls to the same fate as Benson Boone and has it quickly fall behind its predecessor. It means that Paul Kelly has peaked at #2 for a second time with "Seventy", thanks to a new vinyl issue. Oddly, it also comes alongside a re-issue of Paul Kelly's classic '80s album "Gossip", which is the one that has "Before Too Long" and "Leaps and Bounds" on it. Mastodon return with their 3rd top 10 album and second highest charting to date. I recently finished reading "Moby Dick" so I should probably go back to "Leviathan" and see if it hits different. Not to be confused with Ocean Alley or Ocean Grove, Australian metalcore group Ocean Sleeper chart for the first time with their second album landing right in the top 10. The McClymonts haven't released an album in a while but their most famous member Brooke is back with her husband Adam for the 3rd time, and it's their highest charting album together to date. There's kinda more country music as well, as Troy Cassar-Daley's daughter Jem has released her debut album and charted for the first time, though I must note that she doesn't really make country music herself. American band Beartooth have their 3rd charting album, and highest appearance since 2016. Interpol have also made their way back into the top 50 after their last album missed out.
  12. Dircadirca posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
No one's mentioned it in the video game discussion, but "Trigger" by Major Lazer & Khalid, and "Ludens" by Bring Me The Horizon were specifically released as singles from the soundtrack to "Death Stranding" and just snuck into the chart at #95 & #75 respectively.
  13. "Wait For Me" by Kings of Leon is charting in Ireland, Australia & New Zealand so I assume it must be close to appearing in the UK as well.

Audrey Hobert 50 NE 01 50 WEEZER Weezer "Choosin' Texas" is back to #1 for an 11th week. On the topic of broken runs, "Earrings" has now had 4 different stints at its peak of #7 for a total of 5 weeks. SIENNA SPIRO has a new highest charting single as "Great Expectation" gets into that tricky top 15 benchmark. It's worth noting that many new peaks this week might be a little questionable as there are no Dolly Parton entries this week, where I suspect she might have snuck two entries into the top 10. We won't know until next week if this is a matter of not lodging the matter soon enough or if she's just going to be ignored on this one. PartyNextDoor gets his first ever solo top 50 hit after 8 previous ones that were likely utilising another artist's star power. DMA'S get their first ever #1 album. Perhaps they were due for this after their last two peaked at #2 but sometimes you miss your shot and that's it. There's also a new entry in the top 10 for Miss Kannina, with ARIA's Facebook comment section reminding us all that some horribly racist people are still very comfortable airing their opinions. Vera Blue returns to the top 50 with her 3rd album after her 2nd album oddly missed out. Local rapper Nerve has his first ever chart entry this week, while Enhypen have their second in the space of about 6 months. In a serious 'two nickels' situation, we've now got two artists in the chart that have made hype anthems for Fremantle FC, as in addition to Tame Impala (though he's really struggling on the album chart despite two major hits), it's the first time ever for Crooked Colours charting, an artist I first heard of over a decade ago. Sam Smith falls well short of the usual top 3 peaks for their discography, while behind Hazel Eyes is a third charting solo album for Brandon Flowers, and a 5th charting "Weezer" album by Weezer. Yes, their debut album never actually charted.

This probably warrants some asterisks or specifications. I don't believe "Animal" is actually the most popular song this past week. I believe the collective streams for the group's new "WILD" EP have been collated together under one total and "Animal" has taken the honours as either the previous or current highest standing (I wouldn't have been surprised if "Hootie Frutti" debuted ahead of it though). Though ARIA have on occasion renamed chart entries to the EPs to reflect this (Lorde's "The Love Club EP" being a noteworthy example), they have not so it's going to leave a confusing legacy. Personally I'm just disappointed we've missed out on a funny chart situation where we've had a "WILD" EP go to #1 on both charts, as Troye Sivan managed it with his also all-caps "WILD" EP about a decade ago. It's a strange outcome that probably doesn't affect anything unless Ella Langley starts accumulating some record breaking numbers and we have to look back on this novelty week affecting her legacy. "Man I Need" continues to shorten the gap very slowly, never count it out. Tame Impala also scores a second top 10 hit (although The Wiggles' cover of "Elephant" also hit the top 10) with "Loser". Fremantle also lost again on the weekend although they have the excuse for now that it was a dead rubber. They've got a week off so there's time for a more auspicious Tame Impala song to take over. Might I recommend "Desire Be Desire Go"? Adéla missed her opportunity to hit the ARIA top 50 when it was the ARIANA top 50 and then didn't get in the week after, but she gets her lucky break with "Ain't In LA" this week. Katy Perry got taken off the chart as is tradition and was replaced by one of the oldest possible songs in the process, which is also tradition. It is interesting to note that Mac Miller's "Cinderella" remains on the chart after 11 weeks, suggesting that ARIA have a contingency ruling for songs that never charted before and will possibly let them thrive for the full 105 weeks. Ravyn Lenae continues to flirt this rule every week with "Love Me Not", a song I was well aware of over 2 years ago at this point. Phoebe Bridgers scores her first ever #1 album this week. She previously got to #12 with her last album, and also got to #3 as part of boygenius. If you think you've been waiting a long time for a new Phoebe Bridgers album, then let me introduce you to Peking Duk who have been dropping singles of note since around 2013, some of which became very big chart hits. The idea of a Peking Duk album was an always distant myth, but sure enough it arrives and lands at #6, just shy of their highest ever ARIA Chart position. It's also a little bit lower than Keli Holiday's album earlier this year, and it certainly is very interesting that the thousands upon thousands of people who had thoughts and feelings about that one have been very silent about this one, almost as if they were slaves to the algorithm. Jungle just narrowly get a new high on the album chart having previously gotten to #10 with the album that has "Keep Moving" on it, what a banger. They're just ahead of long standing quirky singer Kate Miller-Heidke who charts an 8th album to date. Speaking of notable Aussies, we've got Phil Jamieson with a solo album in the top 20. His first solo album just narrowly missed the top 50 so this is a new height for him in this context. You might better know him as the always fascinating frontman of Grinspoon. Recently he's been in the news because he's had a serious back issue that's caused him to cancel shows. Charting for the first time is Grace Cummings, who's been around for several albums now, but this is the first one that's been on my radar, some good singles! There's a new King Gizzard album and you never know where they're gonna turn up until the chart comes out. Australian punk band The Hard-Ons have returned for the second time this year with a collaborative release, this time with punk legend Jerry A from Poison Idea. The Script are falling a tad short of past performances, while Ocean Alley sneak in with a belated entry for one of their earlier EPs, which got a physical release recently.

It's pretty lazily doing what it needs to do at this point. "Rein Me In" has taken back the runner up spot so it's hard to say how close this is now. After weeks at #11, "Boston" finally cracks the top 10. We've also got an Australian hit song again, with Tame Impala's "Loser" entering at #11. This is potentially a cursed song, because it was released on the same weekend that Kevin Parker's beloved Fremantle Dockers got eliminated from finals last year, and they also logged only their 3rd ever loss of the year immediately after the song started climbing the charts again. They're very well positioned to get their first ever AFL premiership but if they lose it, I blame "Loser", which will probably climb into the top 10 next week. Steve Lacy is also benefitting from Spider-Man and gets his second ever top 50 hit. Olivia Rodrigo returns to #1 for a 5th week. As much as I'd like to dive into a peculiar set of debuts, I'm still going through it and don't have it in me. Rowena Wise is a good artist I've been listening to more lately that you've likely not heard of.
  17. I'll be honest yeah, it's hard for me to really be certain what the data is like, just going off extrapolations of data & hunches myself! What we'd want to do with it probably is largely affected by what we want to see on the chart, which is admittedly why I'm always quick to discourage a lot of rash ideas because I feel like based on what's been suggested, the end result probably makes the chart worse for that person! A bit like when we all might just conveniently overlook favourable playlisting/algorithms boosting our favourites, the naked reality would expose that truth in a way that can't be ignored. Or otherwise my strong feeling is still that it doesn't really move the needle in many distinct ways. Life if the OCC put in a streaming cap vs. life if they didn't, and it's the same picture both times. In many senses this all comes down to a debate on whether or not we think new music deserves a leg up purely for the fact that it's new, and how willing we are to suspend disbelief for it on the chart. Like, I feel like Spotify's trending charts capture this kind of fast pace/no lingering nature, but do any of us want to treat it like the real thing? Probably not because it's just too confusing, hard to understand, and doesn't correlate with our realistic expectations of what should be charting where. It leaves the only paths as chaos for the sake of chaos, or objective blandness (which I'll admit is interesting in its own way but that's just me). A matter of whether there is merit to tinkering with the chart to replicate its form of the past, or to leave it to continue to climb to new extremes for better or worse.
  18. I feel like that sort of thing would turn it more to farce, which prevents it from being particularly interesting. Like sure, it is interesting what got to #1 in Canada before Billboard took over the chart in 2007, but is a chart that's telling me "Blue Orchid" by The White Stripes was more popular than "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey very useful?
  19. I feel like the separation of 'active' and 'passive' streams as many people swing it is just one of those things that sounds great on the outside, but the more you think about it, the more it collapses in terms of the realistic benefits or outcomes. Same going for limiting people to 1 listen or anything like that. I don't think there's any tangible evidence that it'll actually resemble the working, exciting chart people expect, it'd just collapse the numbers unilaterally. If this does anything on the whole, it's that it makes it a lot easier to create unnatural chart runs, either via those first day curiosity streams being massively bolstered, or just anyone who wants to fudge the numbers via nefarious methods now having a lower bar for entry. Maybe I'm wrong but is this how some people use Spotify? They just look up every specific song they want to listen to one by one and add to queue? Of course they're gonna be massively outnumbered by the people who just set it and go. I don't even think that's necessarily a problem either. As I type this, I'm currently listening to a playlist I put together and just put on shuffle. By some definitions this is the valid path, but to others, it's a passive heresy and I couldn't possibly enjoy these songs as much as the steady right click/left clicker (I love these songs). I will note however just for a point of interest. A few weeks ago, lastfm had its connection with Spotify recalibrate. All you have to do is go to your account's connection page and put it back up, but the consequence of this is that every artist's daily scrobbles have plummeted to about 20-30% of what it was before (PSA if you haven't checked your account in a while, you probably stopped scrobbling!). I don't think any artist has escaped this, but K-Pop artists seem to have fared a little better than most, so make of that what you will. All those massive hit songs you've loved in the last decade that defined your moment were inevitably being powered by those supposedly passive listeners to a likely similar extent. I don't believe the OCC ever feels the need to comment on this because it's just one of those 'missing the big picture' ideas that aren't worth the bother refuting, because reaching out like that only makes more threads of bother come up, now that it's clear you can badger this out of them.

We're in full chill mode at the moment as the top songs aren't really making big moves one way or the other. There should be an influx of activity thanks to Ariana Grande's new album, but I suspect she won't be challenging the top spot. Behind a top 7 that hasn't changed, KATSEYE have scored their first ever top 10 hit with "Animal". It's hard to say if it's sticking the landing yet but it hasn't had the typical second week collapse, so it might stick around in the top 10. What is making the top 10 this week is "Dai Dai" which with a Spotify peak of #26 (currently #45) is giving me major flashbacks to when "She Wolf" was always far higher on the chart than on iTunes. It's Burna Boy's first ever top 10 hit too. The only other new arrival this week is from Morgan Wallen, who manages to land right next to his recent collaborator Ella Langley, with his new single. This one isn't sticking the landing, it looks like. Charli XCX scores her 3rd #1 album this week. None of the singles have made any real chart impact over here though "Camera" does enter the Bubbling Under chart this week. She lands just ahead of Amy Shark who also has 3 #1 albums, and roughly that many houses. She's recently made her acting debut alongside Russell Crowe, as we all expected. Laufey is touring the country currently and vaults back into the top 10. She has an interesting itinerary where she's going Melbourne->Brisbane->Sydney despite Sydney being located geographically in the middle of those two (I should also note that she did play Perth & Adelaide too, not everyone does this). The Strokes previous album was the first one to ever miss the top 10 but they're back on the rebound with their latest. I read "Meet Me In The Bathroom" recently so now I know too much about the things that Julian & Albert do on tour (Fab seems cool though). Local singer Budjerah has his first ever chart appearance with his album this week. About 5 years ago he turned up on a remix of an Ed Sheeran song that allowed commercial radio to play it and count to their local quotas. Tyla has her second charting album (this year even) and a new high for her. For once I can't say it's because of the new rules. Shania Twain falls a fair bit short of her usual top 10 prospects, while Waterparks & Body Type chart for the first time. Body Type are a cool band from Sydney I think. Alyssa Grace also sneaks through with her first album chart appearance as her single continues to climb.

Strongly agree of course and I think in this sense it's always worth analysing it from the opposite end of the equation. Like, sure, gone are those hallmarks of a hugely dominant #1 single that everyone knows (not necessarily the case in the first place, but hear, hear), but what were those hallmarks? Hearing the song in the shops? On the radio? Close associates talking about it? It poses the question of whether those signifiers really exist for any modern popular song nowadays and suggests that something must be most encapsulating that in the present day even if the degree is very small. Or alternatively, we have to consider that these factors correlate to a successful hit, but they're not actually the components that made the chart sales happen. Once upon a time it was people buying CD singles, now it's people listening to the song privately. Unless you stalk the CD section at the shops, both of these are largely invisible actions. Someone can very actively listen to the current #1 single in their own home without it making a ripple, and that doesn't make it any less valid. Like I just don't buy the 'this song has been #1 for months on end and no one's heard of it' angle. That just tells me those people have largely cut themselves out of the conversation, which is very easy to do. I'd spend long periods of time not listening to top 40 radio and being oblivious to these hit songs I had no reason to ever hear in my teens (and only hear them afterwards because I became a chart nerd). Not that I was ever buying singles around that time ever, but it just meant the conversation was happening without me, and that's fine. It'd be disingenuous to act like the charts have to go through one's own purview to be validated, only to make it very clear from the outset that it's not even something someone wants to go along with. Like skipping out on watching a sport for a decade and suddenly being confused at why the biggest names are ones you've never heard of. Being baffled that Sinner & Zverev are higher ranked than Djokovic when I don't even know what they look like. (Also the longer you spend outside the top 40 environment, the harder it's gonna be to get back into it. It's specifically pushed forward by the people whose very taste it has shaped).

I had a dream today that a new Taylor Swift album arrived and flooded the top 10 but still couldn't unseat Ella. This probably would not eventuate as I feel like we're reaching the tipping point when any new rising hit will quickly storm for lack of competition. Case in point, that new KATSEYE single is rapidly climbing the Spotify chart, now up to #6 without a potential Monday boost to account for. Maybe that's one to watch. Something looks like it'll be forced out of the top 10 though because Stella Lefty & Shakira are making serious pushes. "Dai Dai" is now Shakira's highest charting song since 2007's "Beautiful Liar". Previously, Gracie Abrams helped stop her own song from reaching the top 50 by blocking it with one of her own. Fret not as she's more than made the gap this time and has both "Look At My Life" and "Good Reason" reaching the top 50 for the first time. It what appears to be a good week for labels keeping up with what's going on, Fat Papi & Whiskey Myers score their first ever chart entries with songs that don't appear to have been on the survey before but certainly could have. I'll also note Whiskey Myers because that song is well over a decade old now, so it'll be interesting to see what happens with it in 10 weeks time if it's still charting then. Unlike "Earrings", it does appear on the On Replay chart, so it'll probably be business as usual. Gracie Abrams scores her second #1 album this week. Her last one managed 3 weeks at the top which will be a tall order to replicate. Metalcore band Motionless In White, who notably come from the same town that the US version of The Office is set in, score their first ever top 10 album this week, having made the top 50 with 4 of their albums previously. Bella Kay previously debuted seemingly just via streams last week, this week she has a considerable boost. Steve Lacy doesn't have a big hit single in tow this time around (I'm really enjoying "the feeling" though), but manages another top 20 album a little below his previous one. We've also got some Australian upstarts I've also only heard of for the first time this year and been enjoying. Holly Hebe for catchy indie pop vibes and Swapmeet for catchy indie rock vibes. The UK can have their own metal bands as well, and Loathe chart for the first time this week, much higher than their home country but that might just be chart rules in play. For the 9th time out of 10, I'm pleased to report that Drake's two albums are next to each other, going from both just barely being out of the top 50 to barely being in it.
  25. I'll just put forward that the charts, the #1 single, whether it matters or not is entirely up to you. By all accounts it's just frivolous record keeping that can serve as a time capsule for future generations, though it's been clear for a long time that those future generations are more than happy to pick & choose both within and out those bounds. Some of the smartest people I know have no interest in music past the neoclassicism era, while another set of the smartest people I know get deeply invested in all the works of Olivia Rodrigo. If you have the time and desire to entertain yourself then it can be with whatever you want it to be, to whatever degree you want. Maybe you're interested in what year has the most #100 debuts, or which artist has the most songs that have spent at least 10 weeks on the chart, or even just the airplay chart, the world's your oyster. The only thing is that we tend to be very self-serving about this, which is where the conflict arrives. To say 'It doesn't matter anymore' is code for 'I've lost interest', and that means they've either found a new distraction, or the aspects they tended to enjoy no longer serve them. There isn't a single moment when the charts became obsolete, but if someone new you don't like stole your record away, you can bet you're gonna count backwards to find a viable moment to discredit them. I do the same thing too. Last year there was a footy stat that I was deeply invested in, purely because one of my favourite players was leading it by a country mile. This year they missed some games and aren't playing as well, so they're not leading the stat, and I've convinced myself it doesn't matter as much. Now my fixation is seeing if my team can get themselves off the bottom rung of the average tackles leaderboard of the season, because that's just the thing I find interesting right now. If someone tells me they're interested in the charts, more so than I am, I'm not going to get all uppity at them for finding something interesting just because 'It used to be better' or 'It used to matter'. Let them enjoy it. In the past week I've gotten up early to watch a women's football practice game that I've seen all of 3 people talk about, I broke one of my old uncontested world records in a niche category for a niche video game 3 times in the space of an hour, and I've continued to spend hours working on my music blog that only a handful of my friends actively read. I'm having a great time. Finding something to be invested in is a lot more fun than lamenting that no one cares.
