  2. I reckon there's a solid chance that it actually did appear on the Spotify chart back in 2012 when there was just a weekly top 100. I forget exactly when this started, but I was recording the Australian one back from September 2012 and "Drive By" (which wasn't *quite* as big a hit in Aus) was still charting until November.
  3. Think a lot of global charts have lost even more of their local flair this year and are starting to blend together. Continued by-product of TikTok's algorithm wrestling hold as a discovery platform. There have been 3 Australian songs that made the top 50 this year (soon to be 4) here and 2 of them are covers. In New Zealand, the biggest local hit right now is a top 10 hit from 9 months ago that's barely holding top 100 on the Spotify chart at the moment. This monster hit of the past 4 years spent over 200 weeks in the top 50 and just 4 months later is going to leave the top 200. I don't know if anyone's been paying attention to this sort of thing, but I've noticed that a lot of the random stuff that tended to be big UK hits that just didn't make it to the US or Australia tends to find a hard ceiling around the #20ish spot on the UK Chart lately (and that's with ACR helping it out). In terms of local artists, the UK probably has enough international clout to hold their own for quite some time, but they might end up with the same issue Aus/NZ has where it's just so difficult to break new artists without them going global at the same time.
  4. With regard to "Please Please Please", this is why I'm curious about the long term numbers on a lot of these 2024 hits. My hypothesis of late has been less about autoplay and more that for any other reason, people are just getting quicker to hearing new releases. The late discoverer is getting rarer, just like how it is on the album chart. So I need to see how they stack up in lifetime streams compared to hits of the last few years. It's a long way away but if "Beautiful Things" can overtake "Flowers" in streams in a few years, that's a definite sign that the numbers are genuinely way up and it's not just a temporary artificial inflation. But back on "Please Please Please", if I put that into consideration, I don't think it's drop off is super suspicious. It's very commonplace for a lot of songs to jump in and out of TikTok curiosity rapidly, especially if they aren't fully embraced across the board. It'll probably be fine in the coming months but I just think the curiosity factor is waning and it's settling down into a streaming pace that's more sustainable. It sounds a little off kilter for a massive #1 smash hit so maybe the mass appeal isn't *quite* there in the same way as "Espresso" (this isn't shade). The album isn't even out yet either, and that can be another way to sustain streams. "you should see me in a crown" performed a lot better in its post-album release showing on the charts than when it was put out as a single, for instance.

Like Ken Hinkley's coaching career, it'll probably be there next week but it's looking pretty dicey for the future with the current rate of decline. It's also part of a fascinating group of songs this week. There are 6 new peaks in the top 50 this week and they combine for a total of 9 positions gained. Alongside them is a first time entry for both Koe Wetzel and Jessie Murph, and also Luke Combs has a new entry. For the 3rd time in about 8 months, "Iris" re-enters at exactly #50. Unless the chart really slows down in the near future, I can't say the Bubbling Under is returning any time soon. We've amazingly been having 20+ 'new' songs in the top 30 for several weeks. Billie Eilish gets a 4th week at #1. Perhaps she can stay there if Luke Combs couldn't manage it. He also raises the question to see if in the ensuing weeks, the new album will take attention away from his back catalogue and have his 2nd album finally leave the top 50 for a week. Right behind him is Fred again..'s album which never charted before. I have to imagine this is ARIA doing a silly which I haven't caught on a major release in a while. Also in the top 10 is the worst band name in the world. Go away and stop making me type it. In the week that The Dirty Dozen's Donald Sutherland passes on, we've got a debut from Dirty Three. You might know Warren Ellis as a member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. This is their highest charting album ever. Cannot say the same for Hockey Dad but we still have room left in our heart for them to make the top 20. More consistent is Don Toliver who pulls up into the top 20 for the 3rd time, but at a slight new high.

  8. A higher peak maybe but probably not #1. It's only peaked at #4 on US Streaming Songs (possible #2 or #3 this week? I'm not sure). It's starting to swing back but the last couple of months haven't really been dominated by airplay hits as much as usual.
  9. I think when looking into these momentum shifts, it's more important to look at how much that 7 day rolling change compares to the days before and see if that spikes. So for instance, on Saturday, Friday & Thursday it lost about 600k streams per day, so it was already trending downward. So that's about a 350k shift in one day which might be significant, but there have been songs going from big positive bullets to extreme negative ones in the space of a single day that struck me as more egregious. In saying all of this, I'm still fascinated by "Riptide"'s bizarre behaviour on the Australian chart earlier this month, which to me either reads that Spotify are having trouble correctly calibrating their data, or alternatively that a sizeable chunk of every song's streams are not autonomous.

This is the first time in 20 years that this statement has been true because this song has just tipped the needle back the other way. It probably won't get a 3rd week though because I am fairly confident that "Please Please Please" will get there. Billie Eilish gets another #5 hit from her latest album and Chappell Roan is still climbing if you can believe it. The only other debut this week is a first ever top 50 for Gracie Abrams, rubbing shoulders with a lot of re-entries. "Riptide"'s unexplained streaming quirk of last week and it's back for its 200th week. I believe this weekend we're getting the first ever Northern Academy player to reach 200 games in the AFL, so remember to root for Brisbane's co-captain to take like 15 contested marks & spoils and ruin the dreams of Port Adelaide fans. I may be biased. "Mr. Brightside" missed out on celebrating its 200th week in the top 50 but it's back now. Maybe eventually one of these songs will become the longest charting song in the top 50. Billie Eilish gets a 3rd week at #1. It took 4 weeks for her to finally have the most songs on the Australian Spotify chart although she lost that title again last night. With that sort of momentum shift, you might expect Taylor Swift to overtake her in the future but who's to say. Luke Combs could also debut at #1 although he's never been especially good at frontloading his sales and streams so maybe not. Charli xcx arrives at #3, following the #1 debut of her last album which had slightly less competition so it's hard to say if this is a comedown or not. For Bon Jovi this is business as usual. They also debuted at #4 back in 2009 when they released alongside Robbie Williams & Glee. They've had many #1 albums either side of that but the point is not to expect anything consistent. In hindsight, maybe a #30 peak for Meghan Trainor's last album seems a bit low but I supposed it didn't have any hits on it on release. That tremendous good will and hype lands her next album a bit higher at #23. If you don't read Tom Breihan's column on Stereogum, you should do that. It's up to "All About That Bass" and it's a good one. Lastly KAYTRANADA returns to the top 50 for the first time since his certified banger of an album "99.9%" made it to #21 back in 2016.
  11. If the Brisbane Lions don't win a premiership in the next 10 years it'll be 30 years since the three Lions back-to-back-to-back wins without another one :magic: I know no one cares, I'll see myself out.
  12. It's something I've been trying to pin down all year. Spotify's numbers are always growing but it usually manifests itself in the lower end of the chart, and more often in catalogue streams. Specifically I've been following the Australian stats closely and the number of catalogue songs in the top 200 has been steadily increasing since around 2018...except now in 2024 it's sharply shifted in the other direction. There's something I think to be said about a general influx of new and noteworthy releases which splashes over in general (for instance, I find the charts are at their most stagnant when there aren't big releases, but those catalogue tracks tend to get extra-dislodged when something big comes out). With that in mind, it's hard to say whether or not it's an aberration when you get a big new release if you just keep getting them. Maybe big new releases should be considered the norm now? I do think the auto-play stuff warrants study and analysis too. All things considered, the cycle rate at the top of the chart just doesn't quite feel natural in all my years of watching it, but I need to keep watching it to be sure. Christmas for sure will be an interesting one to document.

All I gotta say is that the '"Houdini" is a flop' crowd has been real quite since this chart came out. I dunno if it'll stay at #1. Spotify has seen some really interesting twists when it comes to how an artist's catalogue responds to new music from them. You'd see this stuff occasionally in the past, like The Fray's "Cable Car" getting a second run on the charts after "How To Save A Life" took off, or Kings of Leon & Disturbed's back catalogues getting a run after their big #1 albums in 2008. This year we've seen Taylor Swift's back catalogue get both a boost and an immediate decline in the space of a week with her new album. Sabrina Carpenter's new single has "Espresso" listed as track 2 which has seen it get a bit of a boost (although her other songs have also climbed up since), and maybe that's enough to get back to #1 next week. It's a really messy week so I'm not gonna lock any certain predictions. If Eminem's YouTube is still strong though he might just get another week. Apart from Central Cee & Lil Baby getting a 4th & 2nd top 10 hit respectively, there isn't much else happening this week. We have reached far enough into the Taylor Swift album cycle that one of the tracks incidentally climbed though. The typo is still on ARIA's website, it makes me laugh every week. Billie Eilish returns to #1, meaning that all of her albums have spent at least two weeks at #1. Crowded House choose not the greatest week for their return as they enter at #3 with their 8th album. All their previous studio albums charted at either #1 or #2. It also segues into my crazy discovery that Casey Barnes has released exactly as many albums as Crowded House have. He was on Australian Idol in 2009 but had already released 2 albums by that point. At #11 this is his highest charting album to date. He's not related to Jimmy Barnes I'm pretty sure. We don't often see climbing albums but it's even more unlikely that Chappell Roan has managed to climb into the top 30 of both charts for the first time at the same time. It feels reminiscent of old charts, don't you think?
  14. Thing to keep in mind is that depending on how you define it, there probably just are less artists breaking through in general. Partly because we've been entrenched in the same main format of consumption for a decade. It helps iron on older listeners, rather than alienate them. Most of the most listened to artists on Spotify got famous 8-18 years ago, if not more. Whoever your favourite up and comer is, more people are listening to David Guetta.
  15. Australian artists get a hit in 2024 without an opportunistic cover challenge, difficulty: near impossible (there's Lithe at least)

  17. 117 days in total. It's popped up quite a bit in the last few weeks, but only 2 days total in the space of 5 years (Apr '19 to Apr '24), most of those 117 days were prior to 2018.
  18. Bizarre thing I've noticed on the Spotify charts in the past few days. "Riptide" has climbed massively globally, and on pretty much every daily chart. Except in Australia and New Zealand (where it's been top 50 pretty much all year) it's actually plummeted out of nowhere at the same time. Never seen anything like it.

I am once again putting my hands in the air with regards to future chart weeks because there's just not enough info around to solve the puzzle (especially when the week hasn't finished). I think any of the top 4 this week could potentially be #1 next week, but realistically I probably have to side with precedent, which is that iTunes downloads are OP. My suspicion is that Eminem's Foster The People-inspired new tune could get to #1, something he hasn't done on the singles chart since 2013's "The Monster". But yeah, it's a real mess of close numbers all over the place this week and something's gotta be #1. I take another L because Billie Eilish didn't actually climb with "LUNCH" but "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" does sneak up behind it, and should overtake it next week. Zach Bryan & Central Cee both score debuts in the top 20 that should climb again next week. I'd love to see the Venn Diagram on that, not because I think they share no listeners in common, but because in general I always want to know how many people are listening to everything in the top 50 by rule. I genuinely have no idea what it would look like. Something tangential I did want to point out is that I was talking about last.fm listener counts recently and a friend observed that "LUNCH" has nearly as many listeners as "all the good girls go to hell". This is despite the 5 year gap in which people may have just stopped using their accounts. I think it's something to consider when talking about autoplay, and perhaps worth looking into over the long run to see if playcounts are being inflated to a similar extent or if the powers that be have done an excellent job of making sure everyone hears the big songs at least once. I also just want to share some observed housekeeping that I'm a couple of weeks late on. ARIA has a bunch of subsidiary charts on their website. I check them religiously because sometimes it can be your only insight into stuff that's bubbling below the surface. A few years ago they started a chart just for Australian hip-hop & R&B, striking while there was quite a bit of action to be seen on it. I always thought there was a silly fallacy in this because ARIA were so notoriously bad at actually recording all the Sydney drill hits that were getting traction. It was more of a Kid LAROI chart anyway, even as his music has slowly changed into not really resembling the aforementioned genres. "STAY" has spent a lot of time at #1 on this chart which at least has a silver lining because it's so clearly synth pop like "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd is, that you can choose to read into this that ARIA are reminding you that The Kid LAROI is not actually white. I just need to make that reminder because I used to catch that comment occasionally and it's a horribly offensive thing to say if you know anything about Australia's stolen generation. Anyway I got side-tracked but basically the chart has lulled into not much of anything in recent months. Just the same Hilltop Hoods & Kid LAROI songs hanging around, and a bunch of songs stuck on the lower rungs that look ready to go but have nothing to replace them. As a Perth local, I was always repping Drapht's 2008 classic "Jimmy Recard" which seemed to slowly creep up the chart over time. It can't anymore though because a few weeks ago ARIA just completely bombed a good chunk of the chart. The bottom half pretty much all gone and replaced by stuff that was considerably lower the week before. It suggests to me that it's one of ARIA's semi-regular survey clean ups that don't seem to be as regular as I thought they were supposed to be. It also means that with greater gaps separating what's been put in that chart that after this initial buzz hit, the chart's gonna be slower than ever before. At least us triple j millennials can enjoy seeing Seth Sentry's early EP on the chart, which feels like it was overlooked in the cull. For the past 6 months, the top of the album chart has been dominated by huge stars with huge streaming numbers, potentially completing the streaming transition where topping the chart instantly requires millions of fans instead of thousands. For the first time this year we have a slight reprieve as twenty one pilots have put on the ol' Wiggum charm and gotten to #1 largely from sales. They haven't touched the top 50 singles chart since 2016 but have scored two #1 albums since. Even more efficient at topping the album chart usually is Bring Me The Horizon, although their digital only release means that they only land at #4 for now. Once again we have just 1 Australian album in the top 50 and it's fairly old. How old is it? Well, this is the album with "Cosby Sweater" on it, released just months before the Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations came out, making sure that he was getting namedropped alongside Bobby Fischer all summer long. I was listening to Djo's "End of Beginning" quite a bit back in 2022 (also hot tip is that "Figure You Out" is a good one) but it wasn't until this year that everyone started pointing out that he was on Stranger Things. I had no idea! I say all this because Wallows is to me always just the band fronted by the star of 13 Reasons Why, and you know it's him because he only has one facial expression. Anyway, they've made the top 50 for the first time. RM gets his 3rd top 50 album, but the first two were called "Indigo" and "mono.", this one sadly does not rhyme.

The circumstances surprise me a little but there might be a lesson here in that if you see something debut on the Thursday Spotify chart due to morning streams, they absolutely count to the following week's charts. In the case of "I Had Some Help", that's a pretty significant number. It also segues nicely into Billie Eilish who is perhaps also subject to this expectation adjustment. Her entire album debuts in the top 23, quite an improvement from her previous outing, with 3 entries in the top 10. "LUNCH" might seem a little low at #5 but it should improve next week. She's also joined by a new soundtrack entry from Luke Combs. I'd say this is about all of note this week but I have to point out that Joy Oladokun has been taken back off "Scared To Start" so that's mildly amusing. Also I staked the claim at the start of the year that "Prada" would outlast "Escapism." in the top 50. After looking dangerous in recent weeks, it has managed to do it. Billie Eilish debuts at #1 for a third time, but you knew that, since all her previous albums are on the chart this week with their peaks on full display. Also yay Australia, because we have a new peak for Hoodoo Gurus. We're far enough into the year that their debut album actually was released 40 years ago as this anniversary release pulls it into the top 10 for the first time ever, having peaked at #29 back in the day. Also this week we've got Slash on a bit of a comedown from typically landing in the top 4, and then we've got ZAYN who actually did chart higher with his last album, "Nobody Is Listening" got to #10 here. Lastly sneaking in for the first time is Beth Gibbons. Noted fan/understander of her Kendrick Lamar collab, Drake, is nowhere to be seen in the top 50 this week, curious.

Global smash hit vs. just barely charted in 2 countries (won't be long until that 30 million gap swings the other way around). Like charts are interesting but we've got to stop discrediting anything that didn't do the formal dance around in the top 40 for a couple of months.

Feel like it's not fair to compare charts position for position from decades past to now. I won't deny the landscape has shifted to an extent, but how many of those bands that scored top 10 hits in the '90s would really do so under similar circumstances to now? A lot of them would get muscled out by bigger hits having longer tenures, while they themselves have more steady chart points that don't lend themselves to impressive chart peaks. Or rather to sound like a broken record, it can't be understated just how much activity happens below the top 40, below the top 100 these days. I've just now seen that Lord Huron's "The Night We Met" has gone double platinum, despite only a #75 peak. If ACR doesn't exist, maybe it's a #30ish peak? In any case, if you go back to the mid '90s, how many songs peaking in the 30s were going double platinum back then? This is a genuine question because many here know the UK Charts better than I do, but I can't imagine it's many, if any (outside of them also slowly accumulating it now). I think in the age of parasocial media that solo artists are easier to market (and generally cheaper), but if they're generating the same equivalent figures, that's their bottom line and they don't need to be on the chart.

It's his 5th #1 hit and Morgan Wallen's 2nd but you know it's true. While I've found that the streaming age has shifted the tide a little bit away from headline collaborations to people just kinda wanting to listen to a specific artist, the charts aren't just decided by streaming. I'm reminded of previous instances, where the fragments of sales does enough to turn the result, like "I Don't Care" in 2019, and "Hold Me Closer" in 2022, also big name collaborations. It's possible that "I Had Some Help" will stick the landing a little better than them and maybe even dominate the top spot on streaming alone. In any case, this particular week saw the two combined versions of "MILLION DOLLAR BABY" score the highest ever streaming week in Australian Spotify history, and it gets a #2 peak hold for its troubles. It could still get there next week but the top two are both bleeding out quite a bit and I tend to lean to the incumbent in cases like this. Anyway let's get to the ARIA funnies check up. The Taylor Swift typo is still there, but "Scared To Start" has a new feature credit, so I guess Joy Oladokun has her first ever charting hit here. The irony of it sitting next to "Like That" which still only has two artists credited is not lost on me. In case you were wondering, "Like That" only just got added to Hot Hits Australia so that's why it climbed a little this week. Skrillex is still credited on "HUMBLE." btw. Myles Smith also debuts to the chart, bringing with him the 3rd ever single/EP called "Stargazing" to chart. If you don't include his Major Lazer feature, then technically Travis Scott also debuted to the chart with "STARGAZING" too. No "SICKO MODE" for Myles as far as I can see. Taylor Swift is #1 for a 4th week but what a shocker of a week for her as she only has 1 album in the top 10, that hasn't happened in about a year. It's a good time to highlight a fascinating thing I noticed in the past few weeks. It highlights the importance of an artist's Spotify top 10 list because while you would reasonably assume a new album would drive attention away from her catalogue, it actually didn't. It wasn't until her top 10 updated with almost only tracks from her new album ("Cruel Summer" is still there though) that it caused a near total exodus from the Spotify chart. About 8 different Taylor Swift songs have been missing in action on the Spotify chart since a little bit after the album came out. "Anti-Hero" has gone from being permanently in the top 50 to struggling to stay in the top 200. "Cruel Summer" even shows no signs of returning to the top 10 after previously showing no signs of ever leaving it, presumably because the top 10 playlist as it is just doesn't have enough crowd-pleasers in it. It'll be interesting to see if there's an upswing once things return to regularity. Anyway, the last Australian artist to go to #1 was Troye Sivan. He was nearly followed up by Troy but understandably it'll be a while before most non-superstar artists have a shot at it. The country stalwart has actually never had a #1 album excluding the roughly 1 day when his Adam Harvey collaboration was announced at #1 ahead of Kanye West's "Yeezus", but had to have erroneous sales deducted after the fact, which is the last time that ARIA have changed the album chart after publishing it (I have to remember the singles chart was post-fixed last year when David Kushner disappeared for no reason one week). With that in mind, this is his second #2 album. Olivia Rodrigo announced an Australian tour that doesn't come within 2000 kilometres of me, but it does for most Australians, so both of her albums are back in the top 4. The last Angus & Julia Stone album that wasn't a video game soundtrack debuted at #2, but it had a fair excuse because Foo Fighters had an album out on the same week. This time around there are less excuses because that album was #5 in its second week and that's where this new one debuts. I like "Losing You" quite a bit. Jumping up a bit though this time around is Knocked Loose, who just barely made the top 50 last time, now they're well ensconced at #14. Also this is mostly a terrible week in general for former Hottest 100 winners. Aside from Angus & Julia Stone, both versions of "Somebody That I Used To Know" dropped a bit on the Australian singles chart, Billie Eilish's albums both tanked this week, The Wiggles' rave album which is a real thing dropped a bit as well, but the crowning achievement in all of this is that a new Kings of Leon album debuted at #20. On the other hand, I guess "Riptide" climbed this week, "Not Like Us" made the top 5, and I think Macklemore may have made the top 100 with "HIND'S HALL". On an unrelated note, I am not covering the Eurovision stats this year. Also new year seems to mean new Gunna album where it's anyone's guess where it's gonna land. This one is a bit higher than the last one. Also just want to note in the world of long running albums, this week is the first time "÷" has left the top 50 outside the month of December. Also of great pertinence, Luke Combs' second album sits at #50 this week. It's still the longest running album to have never dropped out once, but perhaps that's coming to an end.
