Billie Eilish 48 44 493 01 1989 Taylor Swift 49 49 095 15 LOOK AT ME: THE ALBUM XXXTentacion 50 45 098 01 HARRY'S HOUSE Harry Styles "Beautiful Things" is #1 for a 5th week. It sure is a good thing that I didn't do this post yesterday otherwise I might have said something like 'well, there's no sign of that ending', but the Spotify shenanigans continue and now Hozier is #1 there. Probably not soon enough to make a change for next week, but that's one to keep an eye on unless it's involving similar chicanery. Beyonce has a couple of debuts this week in addition to "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" returning to its prior peak of #2, while K-Pop group ILLIT have their first ever entry too. There's some slight dubiousness to the top 50 as it's possible that Richy Mitch and Lord Huron might be on the cusp of the top 50 but are missing from the report. Since there aren't as many Beyonce songs as there were Ariana Grande songs falling out, we've got another one of those classic weeks where all the old songs mostly climb back up to the expense of newer hits. It's unclear to me which of those columns I should put Morgan Wallen's newly peaking "Thinkin' Bout Me" under. He sure is lucky there isn't a recurrency rule. Though Beyonce has been chronically unable to score a proper #1 single since "Irreplaceable", she's done just fine on the album chart of late. She's now got 4 #1s to her name starting with her self-titled album in 2013. The only other debut we've got this week is a return for Pierce Brothers. I say it's a return because their last album didn't actually chart for reasons I can't ascertain, so this is their first chart appearance since 2018. To prevent homesickness, the Australian public has made sure that 6 of the albums that were charting that week are still there this week.

Yeah, I was really interested to see how this would chart coming off of 2 years of fanbase growth but that's gonna stunt it big time. Apparently the album was still being mixed a couple of weeks ago so there just wasn't any time to press it.

Lizzy McAlpine - Older
Whole album's been out for a few days now and I'm pretty content. Just generally a very cozy listen with all the arrangements, but letting the songs float in your head as contemplative puzzle pieces. As I've gotten older I've gotten a little more sceptical of the cliche that is teens & young adults writing about a breakup as if it's this shock end-of-the-world it-would-never-happen-to-me kind of moment (I feel like literally everyone I know in my life who's ever had a partner has had more than one by now). I think here it maybe pays that a lot of it comes with years of reflection and self-awareness. The generally sombre tone of it gives off a vibe of 'well, that was a chapter in my life' sprinkled in with the occasional build-up of 'okay but I'm right to be annoyed by that'. Maybe that's wrong too but that's how I look back at a lot of things myself  I love hearing her perspective though because she always comes across as very honest about these things, even in instances where it'll rub people the wrong way. I say this as someone who did initially latch onto the more pop-oriented moments on "five seconds flat" ("erase me", "reckless driving", "doomsday" and "ceilings" are all incredible still), but I do think she has a certain vision to stand out as a songwriter. Hope to see that she can find a space & level of fame to be comfortable in and continue to hone the craft from here. (Oh and just to highlight stuff beyond the singles, "Staying" and "Broken Glass" both find their way into brilliance that just hits the spot for me. My very Australian reference points here are much of Sarah Blasko's discography and also "Colour The Small One" by [redacted]).

I'd refer to the shirt of the man on Fatboy Slim's second album cover. But in any case it just serves as a perpetual reminder that stuff that is beyond the charts in the age of streaming isn't unknown/unheard/uncared, and the hyper focus on day 1/week 1 figures frequently misses the point.

Billie Eilish 49 51 094 15 LOOK AT ME: THE ALBUM XXXTentacion 50 50 025 01 FOR ALL THE DOGS Drake Don't let the date fool you, this is the real chart, and "Beautiful Things" is #1 for a 4th week. It's still miles ahead of the competition and begs the question for if it could well be the biggest hit of the year. Anyway we do have two top 10 debuts this week, firstly "Like That", which gives Future his 3rd top 10 hit, just 1 spot high of his career high of #7 he got with "Way 2 Sexy". Actually #7 is as high as Metro Boomin has ever gotten too, but that was with "Creepin'", and yes that includes all of his production work. Kendrick Lamar isn't credited but he's been at #1 before. Next up is Hozier scoring his second ever top 10 hit, and first charting hit since "Someone New" which had a quite respectable chart run in 2015. Michael Marcagi is stuck at #12 and could overtake Jack Harlow while being overtaken by Artemas next week, so we can only hope he does the 12 12 12 12 chart standing which is always fun. The best instance of this I believe is when "Little Lion Man" held at its #16 peak in its 16th week in early 2010 and I've always been on the lookout for new instances. Maybe if you only include top 50 weeks then there's still hope for "No Role Modelz" to pull off a miracle. But speaking of Artemas, his song that sounds like a nightcore remix of itself is fresh in at #25 with a bullet in the back pocket. Ahead of that with less of a segue is Olivia Rodrigo which has a moderately interesting detail of having been available on vinyl releases months ago, so it doesn't appear on the New Music chart, and also appears with a last week position on the ARIA website of #2110. I am very curious if that's a sign that there were 2109 songs that registered sales last week or if ARIA got *some* late Thursday data in the mix. That's a number to look out for I suppose! Despite the Olivia omission, the Bubbling Under chart is fairly lean this week. It might grow next week as several songs drop out and "leavemealone" ousts itself as the penultimate 2023 song on the list (YG Marley released *right* at the end of December). Earlier in Ariana Grande's career, her albums tended to drop off quite a bit after debut week. "My Everything" dropped to #8 in its second week for instance. "thank u, next" managed 5 weeks at #1 though and now "Eternal Sunshine" is sitting strong after 3 weeks. It'll certainly be ousted next week by Beyonce. Meanwhile Metro Boomin has a second #2 album (following the second Spider-Verse soundtrack). Future actually has had a #1 album though. Surprisingly The Veronicas have never had a #1 album (they've had 2 #1 singles though), and this week they pick up 6 for 6 on top 10 albums, and this one's landing in the middle of the #5 & #7 peaks their two 2021 albums scored. It's their first album not released on a major label. You know it's a slow week when Pitbull's Greatest Hits can find room in the top 50 though.

The Official Singles Chart - what should its future be?
I can somewhat understand the rationale, it probably barely changes things where it matters, and it really does take exceedingly long to get it all through. But it does add a degree of uncertainty looking at the chart, especially if you have ACR a factor, making those very precise week-to-week differences crucial.

The Official Singles Chart - what should its future be?
It is, although technically speaking the OCC don't actually get the Thursday Spotify data, they just estimate it.
-
The Official Singles Chart - what should its future be?
I'd go further and say it's more of a personal commitment to spend 5 hours listening to something than spending under a dollar on it as well. (Before anyone points out that people can just stream things in the background without listening, people can and also will buy things they don't listen to, people for whom that amount of money is a trifle).

Billie Eilish 50 47 024 01 FOR ALL THE DOGS Drake "Beautiful Things" is #1 for a 3rd week. The lead is solidified so I don't expect anything to change next week. In what is a relatively quiet week, we've got a new bolting in for Dasha, which ARIA have curiously allowed on the New Music chart despite being a few weeks over for that, maybe they're using the album release date. Of course it's far from the biggest muck up that we've got this week, as you'll notice a big surge for "the boy is mine". I'll have to forgive for not paying close enough attention to the Ariana Grande debuts last week to notice myself, but suffice to say, it should never have been as low as #48 then. It dropped from #22 to #29 on this week's Spotify chart if you want a decent estimate on where it should have been, but what a bizarre thing to not only happen but actually be corrected. We've also got a return for Travis Scott, and a sneak-in for V who is buoyed by all the sales of the instrumental & sped-up versions and such to get his first ever solo entry. Bubbling Under we can shine a light on another error, where it seems like the second week reaction strikes again. This time it's for 4batz who charts a week late compared to everywhere else, and at a considerable distance away from the top 50 for something that went #15->#24 in New Zealand this week. So not only did ARIA not count it last week but if the typo on the chart is anything to go by, it's very possible that they didn't even combine the two versions. Ariana Grande scores a second week at #1. She'll probably come crashing down to the Taylor Swift zone next week which means someone else will be #1 then. Maybe Future & Metro. Leading the new arrivals is a second solo album for Peter Garrett, who you either know from Midnight Oil or Kevin Rudd's Labor ministry back in the day. His first solo album debuted at #3 behind Good Charlotte, this one can't quite match its second week position at #17. But in any case, that's nothing compared to the drop off for Justin Timberlake who arrives well short of any of his previous albums, and his last album hit #2. Kacey Musgraves also made the top 10 with her last album but instead retreats to a more typical debut position for herself. On the optimistic side, Lainey Wilson is charting for the first time ever with her new album.

The Official Singles Chart - what should its future be?
Have always suspected as much. Just this week's chart has goddard. & Dylan Gossett converting their #185 & #192 weekly Spotify ranks (with no appearance on Apple's chart at present) to #58 & #67 on the OCC chart. Polyhex also tells an interesting story: The number of new entries on the chart is relatively stable post-ACR/3-track rule, but the average weeks on the chart comfortably lifted past the highs of 2015-2016, suggesting an increasing disconnect between the mega-hits and the also-rans that are given a whimpering breath of life by the rules. But then I wonder if we're on the brink of a dam burst, somewhat like the album chart where the average number of new entries has started to decline.

She's out from #20 in Australia with no obvious sign of replacement so probably not.

Billie Eilish "Beautiful Things" is #1 for a second week. It does not look to be under immediate threat although we must always consider the volatility/tendency to spike of new arrivals. With that in mind, Ariana Grande scores a second #2 debut of the year. She briefly found herself atop the Spotify chart but things have calmed down a little since then. Djo also continues to vault with "End Of Beginning" and should close the gap a little even if he can't keep that momentum up in the week following me hitting the Add Reply button. Ariana Grande releasing a new album is a prompt for everyone else to take the week off so there's not much else to say, with the exception of a new arrival for Bryson Tiller. This is actually his first ever lead artist entry, he's only made the top 50 before with "Wild Thoughts". A rare W for the Australian music scene in 2020 was managing to get to #1 ahead of tough competition, namely Ariana Grande's "Positions" album. It spent its first two weeks at #2 behind Midnight Oil & Kylie Minogue and never got there in the end. Ariana Grande reverses fortunes to go back to #1 with her newest album, which gives her 5 #1 albums in total. In that regard you could take this week as an Australian music L but actually I think it's quite impressive that some 2 decades after first appearing on Australian Idol, Ricki-Lee scores her highest ever album chart position. Of course maybe at this point she's more recognised as a media personality but in any case she released her first new album in a decade and hits #3 with it. Speaking of new points, Australian music culture war focal point Sticky Fingers take their first album to its highest ever position thanks to an anniversary vinyl. Kylie Minogue's anniversary vinyl looks to have just missed the top 50. We've also got Judas Priest returning to the chart for the first time in 6 years, where the top 10 still eludes them but they're quite consistently making the top 20, even on what could still be considered a tough week.

The Official Singles Chart - what should its future be?
Oh, I understand the dissonance in that regard. To an extent the album chart tips the balance as a lot of those bands with unremarkable single success sold truckloads of albums instead. Growing up in the 2000s I didn't really understand or experience much of the appeal of CD singles (outside of one novelty single I got my parents to buy when I was 7). Further to that, my version of your events was that everyone I knew just illegally downloaded & burned CDs, which made for a lot of widely distributed artists who were gaining notoriety without sales to match. The funny thing about all this is that when I started reading charts & chart discussions, I would find people for whom this disparity served their interests well (people who like the charts are more likely to keep following them, not shocking), and they would drum out lines about how if people really were fans of so-and-so, then they would buy their music. I found early Spotify charts in Australia very interesting in that regard because they opened things up to the kinds of things the sales chart never envisioned: The xx & Flume flooding the chart with their new albums, artists like Grimes & Alpine skirting around the top 20, "Retrograde" by James Blake going top 5 on the official streaming chart. It all really gave voice to the fact that the sales format was creating a distorted version of things since it represented such a small sample of the music listening audience. Inevitably this ended up being true of the early streaming chart as well but it was still boasting a higher audience reach than the sales chart so there was at least something in it. So I guess what I really meant to ask is whether or not there were ever articles written in a tone of 'What's to be done with the Singles Chart?' in response to an endemic of charity singles & the like diminishing the credibility of a #1 hit. Because I sure see a lot of takes based on nebulous conjecture that it's all the fault of passive streams. Not saying I actually agree with the former (a sale is a sale, that's what the chart is/was for). Honestly I think they're both in a similar bucket of elitism, the kind that never gets called out because it's in the context of mainstream music chart fandom.

The Official Singles Chart - what should its future be?
I'm curious because it's before my time but was there ever any discourse surrounding the validity of records in the '80s/'90s etc that charted high (or often got to #1) on the basis of charity/not-necessarily-wanted gifts and the like? Because it feels like a parallel to the whole thing with intentional vs. incidental streams*. It feels like nowadays there's just an accepted validity to the word of the sales figure of yesteryear and only controversy when it happens nowadays because we have the empirical data that tells us not that many people are actually listening to the LadBaby singles or things of that nature. *I still suspect that there's an inherent belief that this is making the chart 'worse' because everyone thinks their favourite songs have more active support. In reality I think labels work overtime to try and push us onto new hit songs and the charts would be even less fresh if left to actively pursued streams. Like it's the difference between TikTok hits that get a marketing push and the ones that don't and just flutter away after a couple of weeks.

The Official Singles Chart - what should its future be?
Thanks for posting that article, appreciate it as a measured observation rather than a thinly veiled whinge that a lot of these articles can be. I'm not sure I could necessarily agree on this point. I think if anything it's increased internet visibility of opinions, which is increasingly aged & jaded. People who don't like things complain on Facebook and/or Reddit. People who like things avoid those negativity zones and just enjoy it to themselves. Furthermore, if anything's happened, it's that the new dominance of streaming has shifted the dominant demographic so rapidly that a lot of folk have found their interests pushed aside, almost like a whole generation was skipped. Streaming and such makes for an easy scapegoat as well. You can bet that the moment the Bryan Adams (or Frankie Laine ~) record is beaten, there'll be debate on the merits of it that'll largely be fuelled by people not willing to accept the changing of the guard. Everyone loves to quote the records & milestones that serve their interests until they don't. The merits of physical product is worthwhile to discuss without an easy solution. A while back I was watching a talk between label heads about the industry and one of them admitted that utilising pre-orders/formats was their only way to get a strong first week chart position, but that it felt like cheating to them. I always get a bit suspicious of them on the UK Charts as well, like last year when for a while, about half of the songs that hit #1, did so with conveniently timed physical boosts. Not only that, but often conveniently stacked, like Lewis Capaldi pulling out two narrow victories, and pulling more CD sales for a brand new single than a new Metallica album one week. It just feels like a carefully planned design that always seems to work out. I can't say for sure if it's all above board but in any case, it takes away the illusion that the public at large is choosing what's going to #1. There's an argument to be made that a streaming only chart would make for something more historically relevant, but admittedly I've never been a fan of gate-keeping music consumption. Maybe the ratios could use some tweaking, but I don't want to just assume that someone is buying a single to never spin it, nor that someone passively hearing a song on a playlist necessarily enjoys it less than someone who typed it into the search bar.

How long it takes up residence there obviously depends on the competition willing to unseat it. Beyonce's timing has been pretty bad and doesn't look like contending anymore. Djo climbs into the top 10 for the first time with a bit of momentum still on his side. The big news of, actually two weeks ago was Fred again.. announcing a run of very soon Australian shows (well, just Melbourne & Sydney). He's actually already done the Melbourne shows, but in any case, all of his stuff is flying up, most notably "leavemealone" which scores a massive new peak and is his highest charting single ever now. Michael Marcagi & CYRIL also take big climbs into the top 20, I can't actually figure out how the latter is quite so high even though his sales are quite good. Also Muni Long's team has worked out the lifehack for the New Music chart by crediting the Lil Jon version, since the original is too old to be included. After nearly 5 years, "Lover" finally scores a second week at #1. Of her #1 albums, it was one of only a few that hadn't stayed multiple weeks, and gives us a whole new permutation of her holding the top 5. With Ariana Grande & The Weeknd (thankfully not together) this reign of tomfoolery will very much be over next week. We've got a real new music problem on the album chart this year too. "american dream" and "Vultures 1" are the only albums this year to last more than a single week in the top 50. We've got three more for the pile of one weekers here, and as a nice treat they're all Australian. As a less nice treat, they're all down on previous peaks, one has to wonder if that general influx in new streamers this year is gonna make a serious roadblock in the charts to come. Anyhow, congrats to Mildlife, Donny Benét & San Cisco for getting to the top 50, because it ain't easy anymore.

2024 Australian Chart Thread
Yeah exactly. Popularity begets popularity to such an extent that you rarely see any sign of fatigue...see your own avatar  but then even on the iTunes chart, there's so little new music that people are exposed to liven it up. Stuff like "The Sound Of Silence" (the cover) and "A Thousand Years" have been mainstays on that chart from new purchases for like a decade now. As a side note too: there's been a big influx in new users on Spotify this year, #50 on the chart is often 90K a day when it used to be 70K for ages. Can't imagine it's favouring new music.
