Attempts at a Christmas takeover have been slightly thwarted, although Mariah Carey is slightly higher on the chart than she was on the equivalent chart last year. Jack Harlow looks solid to keep the top spot again next week but the chart week that hasn't even started yet is up for grabs, who knew? The big winner of Christmas this week is Kelly Clarkson who charts a week earlier than before. If she can somehow maintain this position, a top 10 placing is in the cards. Otherwise there's a new Taylor Swift song which will at least get a second week in the top 50. The Bubbling Under chart has gotten a lot bigger this week which is putting it quite a distance away from the top 50 at this point. "1989" gets a 6th or 15th week at #1. It seemed far away before but maybe overtaking the original reign is on the cards. Post Malone touring Australia again is getting his compilation just that little bit higher to #3, and speaking of compilations, Coldplay's live in Argentina album has apparently been vanquished from the chart, so congrats to everyone who gets to spend those weeks at #50 or #100 they otherwise wouldn't have. If that feels so unnatural, we've got Peter Gabriel too. It's his first solo entry in over 2 decades. Lastly I just love the fact that a Wiggles album has the term 'OG' in it.

There's not much to note this week except for our latest chapter of funny stuff happening on the ARIA Chart that no one except me seems to care about. We've got some Christmas songs re-entering this week, except they're not just re-entering, they're re-appearing from the void, because they weren't on the ARIA survey last week. This mostly doesn't really affect the top 50 except I suspect Mariah Carey probably would have made the top 50 last week and now I don't know. The interesting thing here is that Brenda Lee is in the top 50 this week, whereas the equivalent top 50 week last year had Michael Buble instead. Brenda Lee did eventually climb to #2 last year but this is an early changing of the guard. It might be more about the strength of the surrounding songs but Mariah Carey is slightly lower than last year, Wham! are in the same position.
  4. This is always an interesting thing to think about because it's also automatically course-'correcting' anytime something different happens. Something can come from left field, but once it hangs around, it's signifying a new but purportedly same blandness. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is avant-garde and increasingly out of step with modern popular music, but paradoxically it's simultaneously one of the biggest normie anthems ever made. All that being said, every year I see the contradicting arguments that the Christmas charts pecking order doesn't change enough but also that it changes too much so it's never pleasing everyone.
  5. It's kind of a mathematical thing. The lower down the chart you go, the smaller the gaps are between positions. So it's less likely that any particular Christmas song is going to land in-between two lower songs. The same thing happens on the iTunes chart when someone passes away.

Don't expect anything less than 9 years old to contest this in the near future. Tate McRae gets another entry in the top 20 which seems steady for the time being. For the main story of the week, I have to note that Australia has a perpetual discourse around the words 'National Tour'. Given the prohibitive bother of travelling to the slightly more remote population centres of the country, it's often fancy speak for 'East Coast Tour' or 'Melbourne, Sydney and maybe Brisbane Tour'. I do wonder how much more live music I would see if I didn't live on the wrong side of this country. At least Alvvays are coming here in a couple of weeks. But also last week with thanks to the hand of TourismWA, Coldplay did an Australian tour with an itinerary consisting of just playing a show in Perth. They did announce east coast shows about a year from now but not until after they pranked a bunch of people into flying 3000km over. In any case the circumstances has brought a bunch of Coldplay songs back (I suspect "Yellow" isn't being counted properly as it should be closer to "Viva La Vida", but at least it's now on the system). Last time Coldplay had some songs re-enter the chart, it was when they performed at a bushfire relief concert in 2009. By sheer coincidence there was a bushfire like 2km away from where I live in the past week so now I have to associate the two I suppose. Back in 2014 I came up with what I'm retroactively calling the Hozier rule. What it means is that when something gets globally successful in the streaming era, no level of overexposure in territories it's already been a hit will prevent it from having a second run, the kind of which that implies everyone forgot it was already a hit. This is notedly different to pre-streaming where you might see a half-hearted bounce back at most. "Rude" by MAGIC! was a big hit here about 6 months before the rest of the world and did not return to the chart when it became a Hot 100 #1. Recent developments make me wonder if I should revise this rule, given the pillow of equilibrium streams that most/all past hits receive. This is to say that now something that becomes a hit twice will actually be a bigger hit in the established territory since there are already people listening to it every week. This long ramble is just to note that Ocean Alley are back in the top 50 with "Confidence", and charting higher here than anywhere else, except for New Zealand because what is "Confidence" except the exact sort of thing they love there (though one must note that it's also 4xPlatinum over there). But of course then, commercial radio never really played the song despite being a rare Australian top 10 hit, and anyone using TikTok wasn't even born yet in 2018 so I guess it is a completely new song to a lot of people. I personally made a mission to have an iTunes collection of every Hottest 100 entry ever back in 2012 which meant I made a deal with the devil to eventually purchase 14 different Ocean Alley songs and counting ("Touch Back Down" and "Deepest Darkness" were done of my own volition though). Back on topic we now have an absurd 6(!) Australian songs in the top 50 as The Kid LAROI sneaks in with "Bleed". This gives us a 9th Australian song to debut this year, but tragically we remain stable with only 4 different artists. None of the nominees for Breakthrough Artist at the ARIA Awards this year had a top 50 hit. Chillinit has the highest debut this week. If you're thinking 'haha, 420', then yes it's absolutely intentional and it's even in the name of his self-run subsidiary label. I did not know the Australian Dermot Kennedy vinyl market existed but gets him a big new peak (originally #37). Dolly Parton charts with a non-Christmas non-compilation album for the first time in quite a many years, although back in 2016 she made the top 10. The vinyl market extends to Evanescence and Cold Chisel, where actually Cold Chisel had the best selling vinyl of the three. I would recycle my classic 'it's the album with' bit except Last Stand is a live album so it's basically the album that has all of the songs you're thinking of.

I want to say a key difference might be that "ceilings" was doing pretty strong numbers on its own before the viral turn. Source: I started tracking its daily global streams back in Sep 2022 because I wanted to see if it was pacing to be Lizzy's most streamed song and in doing so, saw it bubbling up in real time waiting to explode. I was surprised at how quickly "Players" dissipated but it was still pretty fresh when it first charted, so it hadn't established a steady audience in the same way. Ah thanks! I took a look at the chart when it peaked at #8 but couldn't tell for sure how many songs were getting pushed under.

That works both ways though doesn't it? Was it only a top 10 hit because of ACR freeing up space? Certainly it's a recipe for making songs appear to be bigger hits than they are. Though I think also in this case it highlights that the differing longevity of songs after leaving the top 40/top 100 is not insignificant.

This week Jack Harlow gets a second #1 debut smash hit. I want to say that it was pretty close when I was writing about it last week but he pretty much ran away with it by the end of the week. In a very "Moves Like Jagger" type move, it happens on the very week that "greedy" finally manages to overcome "Paint The Town Red". Part of why Jack Harlow had to work for it at the end of the week is that he didn't even have the highest debut on Spotify at the start of the week. He was only #12 behind Dua Lipa's "Houdini" which just like on the ARIA Chart, debuted at #7. The future looks dicey for it though as it's getting dangerously close to falling behind "Dance The Night" on each platform. How good is that Foster The People song though? Remember 5 years ago when Noah Kahan had a song become a long lasting hit due to extremely generous Spotify promotion? As of this week, "Hurt Somebody" is not his highest charting song. Troye Sivan has two top 50 re-entries this week, which coincides with a pretty good night at the ARIA Awards for him. I'm skeptical of the correlation though considering that the ARIA Awards are on a Wednesday night which give very little time to produce eligible streams to impact the chart, gone are the days when you could actually tell the ARIA Awards happened by looking at the chart. Taylor Swift's reign on the album chart continues for a 3rd week. "1989" originally managed 9 weeks at the top, but perhaps the sky's the limit this time around. Once again the dedicated following of K-Pop shows itself with the highest debut this week being Stray Kids. This is the second time this year they've landed at #2. Remember earlier this year when there was a lot of talk about hip-hop's diminishing impact where the main citation was the lack of #1 albums, completely ignoring how much of that was just the result of Morgan Wallen styling on everyone? Anyway it's interesting that I believe BTS are still the only K-Pop group to go to #1 despite so many getting close in recent years. There's more K-Pop up here too because Jung Kook is on The Kid Laroi's debut album which enters at #3. He did of course get to #1 with his mixtape, but let's not give up hope. Until this year, Troye Sivan's only #1 was his EP. Let the record show that The Beatles did not score a new peak, but merely replicated their 1993 peak. Also isn't it interesting that the gap in popularity between Blue Version & Red Version has increased quite a bit in 30 years? Chris Stapleton narrowly scores his highest ever debut this week at #13. Chris of the Brown variety is somewhat low by his usual top 10 standards. Of his regular releases, only his debut and the absolutely rejected "Graffiti" charted lower. One must respect the extremely supporting Perth music scene. Everyone knows everyone, I'm only a degree of separation from knowing Old Mervs personally. They haven't even put out an album, they're getting their first entry here with just an EP. Lastly I must warn you that just like my offhand remark about a Foster The People song that isn't "Pumped Up Kicks", I'm about to get extremely Australian millennial on y'all. Probably the most peculiar debut on this week's chart comes from Hilltop Hoods. If the ominous title isn't indicative enough, yes, it's one of those albums. Yes, it doesn't actually have a physical release. In fact this album didn't even exist a week ago. If Spotify and iTunes are to be trusted, it first turned up online on Wednesday. That's 6 days into the tracking week and means that without a shed of doubt, streams are being applied to an album that didn't even exist when the streams happened. Hilltop Hoods' only acknowledgement of this release comes via so far three YouTube shorts just playing 30 second snippets of songs with a linktree to the release, the first of which came on Thursday. I am currently very convinced that Suffa, Pressure & DJ Debris have no interest in this and might not even know it exists, but we need to save the album chart from going bare on Australian artists so this can tide it over perhaps. But, the greatest crime about this compilation is the name in combination with the tracklist. Apart from a surprise inclusion of "Rattling The Keys To The Kingdom", the entire tracklist is just their newest singles and most streamed singles (I guess they also left out "A Whole Day's Night" as a recent single, but understandably so). What this means that if you witnessed the Hilltop Hoods uprising of the mid 2000s, you will be baffled to know that this compilation has just 1 song from "The Calling" (no points for guessing), and NOTHING from "The Hard Road". I can't think of a good example but like imagine if there was a Beatles highlights compilation that ignored "Revolver" and "The White Album". Or a Kasabian compilation that had just "Club Foot" from their first two albums. Like I'm not saying that I expect "Stopping All Stations" to make the cut, but the title track for "The Hard Road" is like a signature song that unlike Marlon Brandon has only gotten better with age. It's a bloody outrage it is. In any case it arrives on a pretty packed week so I expect it'll reach a higher peak in the future.
  12. Just saw Ocean Alley made the Irish Spotify chart with "Confidence", so maybe they'll hit the UK one soon, wild if true.

Billie Eilish It's not over yet. It definitely will be next week but it's a mystery as to who it goes to. One would think that Tate McRae finally gets over that Doja Cat hurdle this week, but she does so with awful timing because Jack Harlow's coming in hot. With the momentum he's on right now, I should think he'll get there, but it's not a guarantee. The other notable thing that happened this week is that The Beatles made the top 10. I don't know if you believe in the idea of satanic messages in their music, but I will tell you that their last three singles, "Free As A Bird", "Real Love" and now this one, all peaked at #6. Don't think I'm not onto that. Jung Kook also gets a debut and re-entry this week. Jung Kook also gets a debut on the album chart and it's not enough to get to #1. He has one of only two albums in the top 16 that hasn't already hit #1, the other being Post Malone. I discovered recently that there's now a deluxe version of the album that has basically all of his hits, and I'm guessing that's why it's charting higher than before. The only other arrival this week is Australian rock stalwarts The Mark Of Cain, who get only their 3rd ever top 50 album surprisingly. But maybe worth noting that they do contribute to proving me wrong from last week. Dua Lipa's new single didn't come in time and "Future Nostalgia" drops out of the top 50 for the first time ever. It was the second longest lasting album from debut in the chart until now. The longest lasting album remains "What You See Ain't Always What You Get".

You can take "Wildest Dreams" and "This Love" out of the equation because they already charted before and it'd be especially strange if they disappeared in this context. You can almost say that it was limited to just the new songs and prior singles except that "New Romantics" has been swapped out for "Wonderland" (I'm led to believe that "Bad Blood" just missed the top 50 as it only included points from the Kendrick Lamar version. Combined it would probably be around #8. The biggest casualty of this is "All You Had To Do Was Stay" which probably landed between "Wildest Dreams" and "Shake It Off", and she's missing 8 songs all up I think. Or perhaps the true casualty of this whole situation is Lewis Capaldi, who got booted from the top 50 again allowing Glass Animals to dubiously shave another week between the two, with just a 5 week gap. "Someone You Loved" actually reached 3 years (157 weeks) last time it was in the top 50, while "Heat Waves" will be trying to manage that consecutively. It's having some trouble finding its footing again though so it's hard to say at the moment if it'll manage. If both songs fall out for good, they've got a solid year at least before The Killers or Fleetwood Mac could possibly catch up. As for the top end of the chart, that's also quite a race. I expect Taylor Swift to hold again but it's been back and forth on Spotify between "Paint The Town Red" and "greedy" for who gets #1 in the aftermath. It probably won't be The Beatles in case you were wondering. I assume their sales are good but the streams are unimpressive. They'll make the top 50 but I won't begin to predict it. Otherwise basically nothing else happened this week. Australia never gets quite as invested in Halloween (although "Thriller" would've made top 50 on Spotify for the first time this year under less irregular competition). In any case we have a more stacked Bubbling Under chart again, and perhaps we will again next week as "What Was I Made For?" and "Rush" both retire. Of course I only mean stacked in a numerical sense, clearly there aren't new, budding hits to be seen here. I will shock nobody to tell you that Taylor Swift has a #1 album this week. I might shock you to say that according to ARIA's social media, this is her biggest single week sales ever. It does beg the question of what the future holds for "1989 (Taylor's Version)" with respect to "1989". We've nearly got the first crack in the armour as "Blank Space (Taylor's Version)' is only 11,000 streams ahead of "Blank Space" and pacing to fall behind this week. Previous instances with "Red (Taylor's Version)" and "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" have seen the original versions evicted from the chart permanently on release week, but "1989" only has a notable but modest decline this week. Notably this also means that I'm now teaching you that "÷" is the best charting album of all time in Australia and "1989" is a somewhat distant second, but if it sticks around in the top 50 it might eventually take the lead. "÷" has actually had a bad showing this year, hitting a new non-December low this week and teetering on the edge of no longer being a top 50 mainstay. It dropped out for 1 week on Christmas last year so it's not unbroken. With that in mind, maybe "1989" can still keep up the pace. On a similar note, Dua Lipa's new single couldn't be coming at a better time as "Future Nostalgia" hits a new low of #49 to just barely stay in. Similarly, we can't be sure how much longer "Dance The Night" will hang around, but it's helping her still be the only artist to be in the top 50 singles chart every single week of the 2020s so far. Actually next week it'll be 4 consecutive years all up, yes, "Don't Start Now" is that old. In the non-Taylor Swift tangents, I have to say I'm surprised to see that otherwise The Rolling Stones and blink-182 would've maintained their positions on last week, as they've managed to beat the 25th album (not an exaggeration) by King Gizz. I'm also hearing good things about the new Angie McMahon album which becomes her second top 10 album. triple j actually nominated it for album of the year before this chart even came out, which is the sort of speedy adjudication I think more industries should get behind. Otherwise of note this week, Laufey makes the top 50 for the first time thanks to the vinyl release. That's an album I have heard and I thought it was pretty good. It also means I can more officially add her to the collective of surprisingly loads of artists from Iceland who have found success in Australia despite a population of less than half a million and being one of the furthest away countries from us. According to a Sporcle quiz, only a bunch of countries in Central America and the upper parts of South America are further. The big winner is

Billie Eilish 49 47 011 18 EGO: THE MICHAEL GUDINSKI STORY - MUSIC FROM THE FEATURE DOCUMENTARY Soundtrack 50 50 219 18 LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES Coldplay "Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 10th week. We're spared the crossfire of the Billboard trophy cabinet hunting to get "Cruel Summer" to #1, so maybe I'll be able to get out of 2023 still liking the song. Taylor Swift will probably be #1 next week but the mystery is with which song. Just because there is past precedent that when a Taylor Swift album comes out, not all of the tracks actually appear on the chart, where the extras are the ones usually afflicted. However this week, it's the extras that are doing the best. You'd probably put your money on "Is It Over Now?" but then who can say? A side effect of this looks to be that it'll probably end "Heat Waves"'s 151 week streak in the ARIA top 50. For the time being, The Kid LAROI does gift us our 8th Australian top 50 hit of the year. This and "Love Again" are the only ones to hit the top 10, and seemingly just for a week each. It also means that Drake gets a taste of his own medicine as now his potential top 10 hit has been blocked by a debut out of nowhere. It's been a hot minute but we've finally got a new forced random hit that the industry really wants to make happen that also has a blatant sample. Paul Russell breaks the cardinal Coi Leray rule, which is to say that it should be illegal to sample a song that is both already well known, and also already sampled in a Billboard #1 hit. As an added bonus, also please don't sample songs that were overplayed on TV ads. I'm going to assume that Noah Kahan's debut doesn't also do this but I've not ventured to check yet. This is his 3rd top 50 hit. For the first time in 7 years, The Rolling Stones have a #1 album. I actually wasn't totally sure they'd do so up against blink-182 despite the lack of historical success. This is blink-182's 4th #2 album, still not having hit #1. I must share that this morning I had a dream in which I was typing this column(?) up and I made a joke that clearly this 'poppy' new direction (with some very distracting punctuation littered about) was welcomed by fans as it was their highest charter, and someone I won't name (and it's definitely not who you think) made an out of character remark where they completely missed my sarcasm and went on a tirade about how meaningless this chart peak is. There's not much else going on this chart. "Teenage Dream" gets a bit of a boost due to the vinyl release, but actually the best selling old vinyl this week was Glass Animals' 2014 debut album. Australian punk band Clowns get their second top 40 album, and I feel obliged to mention since these events are somewhat rare, but after 200+ weeks in the top 50, "Fine Line" has dropped out for the first time ever. It's probably always more interesting to ponder on the last time a long standing album appears in the top 50 (since they're usually jumping in and out), but you don't really ever know that's happened once it has, so this is the more interesting side product we do have. In fact I didn't notice the same thing happen to Billie Eilish's album a few weeks ago. The next album to watch in that line is "Future Nostalgia", which will probably be seen out by the Christmas season if not sooner.
  18. Actually I see where I've been lead astray on "RUSH", the 3rd week was the week "UTOPIA" came out so it has a sort of exaggerated position decline there. "Got Me Started" absolutely still falls under the same category though, these sort of 'artificial' boosts tend to run from around day 7 to day 13 of release and that's been replicated here.
  19. Is Troye Sivan not 3/3 for singles these past few months charting surprisingly high and then plummeting at around the start of week 3?

Billie Eilish 49 49 201 01 FINE LINE Harry Styles 50 53 218 18 LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES Coldplay "Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 9th week. Might get dethroned this week, I'm not sure. I have to take the time to acknowledge my own errors however. I wrongfully asserted that "Slime You Out" would probably only manage 3 weeks in the top 50 but it snuck a 4th. In this era where boosts more typically spread across entire catalogues rather than single songs (well sometimes), Zach Bryan once again has a pair of new peaks which notably includes "Something In The Orange" absolutely obliterating whatever the previous record for longest climb into the top 10 was. Tyla also hits the top 10 this week with relatively brisk pace. Troye Sivan has the only debut this week, under odd circumstances that see his three top 50 entries all sitting next to each other. He's not even alone because Taylor Swift also has 3 in a row below him. This is now the 7th Australian song to hit the top 50 this year and we might have a chance of breaking double digits because The Kid LAROI should see us one step closer next week. That also still means we've only had 4 different Australian artists in the top 50 and one of them wasn't even the first credited artist on the song, yes, it's a bit shit, no, OCC fanfiction rules won't make it better. I'll stop defending ARIA for a moment because they've multiple times on social media this week made the erroneous claim that this is Troye Sivan's first ever #1 on the album chart. He quite notably had a milestone #1 many years ago when "WILD" became the first ever EP to hit #1. To be clear, they did not say "Something To Give Each Other" is his first #1 album, which would technically be true. I just assume whoever was researching this stuff went as far as a single table on his Wikipedia discography where "WILD" is separated from his albums and easy to overlook. Anyway it's good for him that he has 3 hit songs at the moment because you tend to find that's enough to keep an album in the top 50 for a decent while. Earlier this year, Chris Cheney had a top 3 album with supergroup The Barnestormers, and now this week he's back with his more famous band The Living End, whose debut album got a multi-format re-release that includes a recently recovered live performance recording as a bonus disk. Post Malone's compilation is basically unable to fall down the chart until "Chemical" completely vanishes from discussion so it randomly gets a sizeable new peak this week. Tomorrow X Together chart for the first time, and local stalwart Diesel pops in with another new album.
  22. Pretty much unwittingly proving my point here. Going straight for the artist whereas my paraphrased point was about the song (and album really. To the OCC's credit, they have got it on the Americana chart). A tell-tale sign of mental pigeon-holing. It's absolutely in line with traditional country balladry. She even lives in Nashville lol. Elements of chamber pop too, but hey, sometimes genres get blended like that.
  23. Most of his #1 hits pre-date the Billboard Hot 100 (he actually has the last #1 hit before that), so he only has 7 from August 1958 to present.
