You can take "Wildest Dreams" and "This Love" out of the equation because they already charted before and it'd be especially strange if they disappeared in this context. You can almost say that it was limited to just the new songs and prior singles except that "New Romantics" has been swapped out for "Wonderland" (I'm led to believe that "Bad Blood" just missed the top 50 as it only included points from the Kendrick Lamar version. Combined it would probably be around #8. The biggest casualty of this is "All You Had To Do Was Stay" which probably landed between "Wildest Dreams" and "Shake It Off", and she's missing 8 songs all up I think. Or perhaps the true casualty of this whole situation is Lewis Capaldi, who got booted from the top 50 again allowing Glass Animals to dubiously shave another week between the two, with just a 5 week gap. "Someone You Loved" actually reached 3 years (157 weeks) last time it was in the top 50, while "Heat Waves" will be trying to manage that consecutively. It's having some trouble finding its footing again though so it's hard to say at the moment if it'll manage. If both songs fall out for good, they've got a solid year at least before The Killers or Fleetwood Mac could possibly catch up. As for the top end of the chart, that's also quite a race. I expect Taylor Swift to hold again but it's been back and forth on Spotify between "Paint The Town Red" and "greedy" for who gets #1 in the aftermath. It probably won't be The Beatles in case you were wondering. I assume their sales are good but the streams are unimpressive. They'll make the top 50 but I won't begin to predict it. Otherwise basically nothing else happened this week. Australia never gets quite as invested in Halloween (although "Thriller" would've made top 50 on Spotify for the first time this year under less irregular competition). In any case we have a more stacked Bubbling Under chart again, and perhaps we will again next week as "What Was I Made For?" and "Rush" both retire. Of course I only mean stacked in a numerical sense, clearly there aren't new, budding hits to be seen here. I will shock nobody to tell you that Taylor Swift has a #1 album this week. I might shock you to say that according to ARIA's social media, this is her biggest single week sales ever. It does beg the question of what the future holds for "1989 (Taylor's Version)" with respect to "1989". We've nearly got the first crack in the armour as "Blank Space (Taylor's Version)' is only 11,000 streams ahead of "Blank Space" and pacing to fall behind this week. Previous instances with "Red (Taylor's Version)" and "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" have seen the original versions evicted from the chart permanently on release week, but "1989" only has a notable but modest decline this week. Notably this also means that I'm now teaching you that "÷" is the best charting album of all time in Australia and "1989" is a somewhat distant second, but if it sticks around in the top 50 it might eventually take the lead. "÷" has actually had a bad showing this year, hitting a new non-December low this week and teetering on the edge of no longer being a top 50 mainstay. It dropped out for 1 week on Christmas last year so it's not unbroken. With that in mind, maybe "1989" can still keep up the pace. On a similar note, Dua Lipa's new single couldn't be coming at a better time as "Future Nostalgia" hits a new low of #49 to just barely stay in. Similarly, we can't be sure how much longer "Dance The Night" will hang around, but it's helping her still be the only artist to be in the top 50 singles chart every single week of the 2020s so far. Actually next week it'll be 4 consecutive years all up, yes, "Don't Start Now" is that old. In the non-Taylor Swift tangents, I have to say I'm surprised to see that otherwise The Rolling Stones and blink-182 would've maintained their positions on last week, as they've managed to beat the 25th album (not an exaggeration) by King Gizz. I'm also hearing good things about the new Angie McMahon album which becomes her second top 10 album. triple j actually nominated it for album of the year before this chart even came out, which is the sort of speedy adjudication I think more industries should get behind. Otherwise of note this week, Laufey makes the top 50 for the first time thanks to the vinyl release. That's an album I have heard and I thought it was pretty good. It also means I can more officially add her to the collective of surprisingly loads of artists from Iceland who have found success in Australia despite a population of less than half a million and being one of the furthest away countries from us. According to a Sporcle quiz, only a bunch of countries in Central America and the upper parts of South America are further. The big winner is

Billie Eilish 49 47 011 18 EGO: THE MICHAEL GUDINSKI STORY - MUSIC FROM THE FEATURE DOCUMENTARY Soundtrack 50 50 219 18 LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES Coldplay "Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 10th week. We're spared the crossfire of the Billboard trophy cabinet hunting to get "Cruel Summer" to #1, so maybe I'll be able to get out of 2023 still liking the song. Taylor Swift will probably be #1 next week but the mystery is with which song. Just because there is past precedent that when a Taylor Swift album comes out, not all of the tracks actually appear on the chart, where the extras are the ones usually afflicted. However this week, it's the extras that are doing the best. You'd probably put your money on "Is It Over Now?" but then who can say? A side effect of this looks to be that it'll probably end "Heat Waves"'s 151 week streak in the ARIA top 50. For the time being, The Kid LAROI does gift us our 8th Australian top 50 hit of the year. This and "Love Again" are the only ones to hit the top 10, and seemingly just for a week each. It also means that Drake gets a taste of his own medicine as now his potential top 10 hit has been blocked by a debut out of nowhere. It's been a hot minute but we've finally got a new forced random hit that the industry really wants to make happen that also has a blatant sample. Paul Russell breaks the cardinal Coi Leray rule, which is to say that it should be illegal to sample a song that is both already well known, and also already sampled in a Billboard #1 hit. As an added bonus, also please don't sample songs that were overplayed on TV ads. I'm going to assume that Noah Kahan's debut doesn't also do this but I've not ventured to check yet. This is his 3rd top 50 hit. For the first time in 7 years, The Rolling Stones have a #1 album. I actually wasn't totally sure they'd do so up against blink-182 despite the lack of historical success. This is blink-182's 4th #2 album, still not having hit #1. I must share that this morning I had a dream in which I was typing this column(?) up and I made a joke that clearly this 'poppy' new direction (with some very distracting punctuation littered about) was welcomed by fans as it was their highest charter, and someone I won't name (and it's definitely not who you think) made an out of character remark where they completely missed my sarcasm and went on a tirade about how meaningless this chart peak is. There's not much else going on this chart. "Teenage Dream" gets a bit of a boost due to the vinyl release, but actually the best selling old vinyl this week was Glass Animals' 2014 debut album. Australian punk band Clowns get their second top 40 album, and I feel obliged to mention since these events are somewhat rare, but after 200+ weeks in the top 50, "Fine Line" has dropped out for the first time ever. It's probably always more interesting to ponder on the last time a long standing album appears in the top 50 (since they're usually jumping in and out), but you don't really ever know that's happened once it has, so this is the more interesting side product we do have. In fact I didn't notice the same thing happen to Billie Eilish's album a few weeks ago. The next album to watch in that line is "Future Nostalgia", which will probably be seen out by the Christmas season if not sooner.
  4. Actually I see where I've been lead astray on "RUSH", the 3rd week was the week "UTOPIA" came out so it has a sort of exaggerated position decline there. "Got Me Started" absolutely still falls under the same category though, these sort of 'artificial' boosts tend to run from around day 7 to day 13 of release and that's been replicated here.
  5. Is Troye Sivan not 3/3 for singles these past few months charting surprisingly high and then plummeting at around the start of week 3?

Billie Eilish 49 49 201 01 FINE LINE Harry Styles 50 53 218 18 LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES Coldplay "Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 9th week. Might get dethroned this week, I'm not sure. I have to take the time to acknowledge my own errors however. I wrongfully asserted that "Slime You Out" would probably only manage 3 weeks in the top 50 but it snuck a 4th. In this era where boosts more typically spread across entire catalogues rather than single songs (well sometimes), Zach Bryan once again has a pair of new peaks which notably includes "Something In The Orange" absolutely obliterating whatever the previous record for longest climb into the top 10 was. Tyla also hits the top 10 this week with relatively brisk pace. Troye Sivan has the only debut this week, under odd circumstances that see his three top 50 entries all sitting next to each other. He's not even alone because Taylor Swift also has 3 in a row below him. This is now the 7th Australian song to hit the top 50 this year and we might have a chance of breaking double digits because The Kid LAROI should see us one step closer next week. That also still means we've only had 4 different Australian artists in the top 50 and one of them wasn't even the first credited artist on the song, yes, it's a bit shit, no, OCC fanfiction rules won't make it better. I'll stop defending ARIA for a moment because they've multiple times on social media this week made the erroneous claim that this is Troye Sivan's first ever #1 on the album chart. He quite notably had a milestone #1 many years ago when "WILD" became the first ever EP to hit #1. To be clear, they did not say "Something To Give Each Other" is his first #1 album, which would technically be true. I just assume whoever was researching this stuff went as far as a single table on his Wikipedia discography where "WILD" is separated from his albums and easy to overlook. Anyway it's good for him that he has 3 hit songs at the moment because you tend to find that's enough to keep an album in the top 50 for a decent while. Earlier this year, Chris Cheney had a top 3 album with supergroup The Barnestormers, and now this week he's back with his more famous band The Living End, whose debut album got a multi-format re-release that includes a recently recovered live performance recording as a bonus disk. Post Malone's compilation is basically unable to fall down the chart until "Chemical" completely vanishes from discussion so it randomly gets a sizeable new peak this week. Tomorrow X Together chart for the first time, and local stalwart Diesel pops in with another new album.
  8. Pretty much unwittingly proving my point here. Going straight for the artist whereas my paraphrased point was about the song (and album really. To the OCC's credit, they have got it on the Americana chart). A tell-tale sign of mental pigeon-holing. It's absolutely in line with traditional country balladry. She even lives in Nashville lol. Elements of chamber pop too, but hey, sometimes genres get blended like that.
  9. Most of his #1 hits pre-date the Billboard Hot 100 (he actually has the last #1 hit before that), so he only has 7 from August 1958 to present.

I was thinking a week ago that it might be close to the end of this reign but then in the past few days it's been brought to my attention that "greedy"'s streams were being suspiciously inflated (to justify higher playlist positions and altogether astroturf it into looking legitimate? Weird how transparent these things can be) so there's not really a strong contender at the moment. Painting the carpet red for Taylor Swift in a few weeks perhaps. Drake has a handful of debuts this week, three of them in the top 50. Much like with Travis Scott recently, this first week of debuts isn't really reflecting the order of things a week later, as "Rich Baby Daddy" is actually the highest track on Spotify at the moment despite its lowly debut. Coinciding with this is Zach Bryan probably finding the worst week to hit 6th or 7th wind with his catalogue, as "Something In The Orange" overtakes several songs to climb up to a new peak of #11, but alas Drake made the mission a little too tough this week. Zach Bryan has receded a bit this week so far but I do think that he should make the top 10 at last next week, which if nothing else, provides an easy to remember answer to the question of 'What is the slowest climb into the top 10', as well as not having it be an anti-climax answer of "Die For You" or something like that. Tyla is also racing towards the top 10 this week, as is our non-Drake debut this week from Mitski. "My Love Mine All Mine" is a country song by the way, stop putting artists into boxes that serve only to stifle creativity. Drake scores his 5th #1 album this week. It breaks a tie with Kanye West to make him outright the rapper with the second most #1's, quite a way behind 1st, but it is worth noting that as of this week, Drake has more top 2 albums than Eminem so he operates on a lot of near misses. It's a big week for Australian artists spanning the generations. The next highest debut comes from The Screaming Jets, who if you're Australian you probably know as the band that made the song "Better", which incidentally is currently being used in a Hungry Jack's ad because someone obviously connected the dots with their slogan. Just a month ago in the lead up to this album release, bass player Paul Woseen died at age 56. At #5 this week is Australian music icon Russell Morris with an orchestral live album named after his debut single and #1 hit "The Real Thing" from 1969. Just behind him is the debut album for Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers who I can attest are more than just pretty good for a girl band. I've done a fact check of my own and can say that this new NCT 127 album is technically their 6th album but it is their 5th Korean album. They hit #3 with their last album a year ago and now have a second top 10. Also debuting in the top 50 this week is the debut EP for brother sister duo DACY, and yet another non-state based Sufjan Stevens album, which is his 3rd top 50 entry.

I was surprised to see it bulleted again on Spotify last night so it may have more in it yet. It maintains the top spot on Apple and iTunes (well it's #2 on iTunes right now behind The Voice winner but yeah) while radio has been slow to adopt "greedy", making a bizarre timeline where the one song in the top 3 getting significant airplay at the moment is the rap song. Jung Kook gets his second top 10 hit this year, once again dodging the peak position suggested by the song title, but slightly closer this time I suppose. Also in the top 10, miraculously, are Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves. The party might not end either because Zach Bryan has been getting a significant streaming boon over the past week and I kid you not, "Something In The Orange" would be pretty much a lock for top 10 next week if not for Drake's interruption impending. Drake's belated album release hurts it a lot in Australia where we already struggle hopping onto new releases. It's hard to predict but I'm expecting probably two or three in the top 10, enough to keep Zach Bryan at #11 maybe. Elsewhere, Troye Sivan has a suspicious climb to #21 which will probably noticeably recede next week. Also "Mr. Brightside" and "Cold Heart" both simultaneously join the 100 week club this week, the 8th & 9th songs to do so. "Someone You Loved" will probably fall out of the top 50 this week which gives Glass Animals a chance to catch up, but they might also drop out so who knows. "Heat Waves" has by far the longest unbroken top 50 streak of 148 weeks and counting. Ed Sheeran scores his 7th #1 album which continues his perfect record in that regard. I believe this is just an unmatched record in general as nobody has accomplished this past or present. The only other big streaks I can think of are Silverchair and 5 Seconds of Summer, who both hit #1 with all 5 of their studio albums to date. They also all debuted at #1 which is something Ed Sheeran can't boast with "+". Otherwise this week in the top 10, it's a good week for those who like putting things in all-caps, or a bad week for that cause because ARIA has not acknowledged the all-caps on all 3 cases. In any case, LANY have managed a surprisingly strong debut at #4, having never charted previously. Same goes for James Johnston charting the first time with "RAISED LIKE THAT" (ARIA's website does not have the all-caps format for titles so I know they didn't do it), and lastly there's the more familiar DOPE LEMON with a 3rd top 10 album in addition to the various other ways that Angus Stone has credited himself on previous hit albums. He actually beat Ed Sheeran on vinyl sales this week. The only other debut is a sneak entry for Tassie's finest Luca Brasi. They were previously charting higher and higher and reached the top 10 but this is a bit of a step back.

  15. Feel like we just had this discussion last time Drake put out a single. But well, it was 11pm in Aotearoa when the album came out which means that the majority of the streams it got for today's chart line up with the time frame that the UK missed. Over there Drake has 12 in the top 50, so I'd say that's a pretty notable listening window.

Billie Eilish 49 42 009 02 AUSTIN Post Malone 50 50 215 18 LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES Coldplay "Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 6th week. Even more so than last week, it's showing some serious cracks with a sharp decline of late, reducing it to merely still ahead by a lot. Lucky to sneak up in this particular week is Kenya Grace which serves an interesting curiosity as I think it might just be the highest charting drum & bass song ever in Australia? The best I can think of otherwise is "Feel The Love" by Rudimental which got to #3. I say it's lucky because "greedy" is really making a move and should at the very least reach #2 next week. Zach Bryan is stuck at #11 for a 4th week in a row but has a decent shot at overtaking a few songs ahead of it so this might be his chance. As silly as the notion is, "Something In The Orange" is once again not out of the count to keep climbing. Getting the top debut for this week is Troye Sivan. You may well know that "Got Me Started" samples "Shooting Stars" but do you know the storied history of that song? Personally I first heard of Bag Raiders around 2007/2008 with some singles that got a little airplay, until "Shooting Stars" really blew up in 2009, hovering around the ARIA top 100 and landing in the top 20 for triple j's Hottest 100. This cult favourite became a top 50 hit in 2013 after it was used in a performance on Australia's Got Talent (I must note that chart entries like that are so rare over here). A few years later it became an internet meme as you probably know, and last year Flume had an audio-visual spectacular when he covered it for Like A Version. His last Like A Version was of Ghost Town DJ's "My Boo" so he sure knows how to pick internet memes that are also massive bangers. Doja Cat gets a debut from her new album, which if memory serves me correctly didn't happen immediately with "Planet Her". We've also got Tyla getting their first entry with "Water". Kylie Minogue scores her 8th #1 album. These are far from guaranteed for her as she only scored her first in 2000 and has been blocked to the top spot several times. She has however now gotten there with her last 4 studio albums. Speaking of inconsistent, Holy Holy albums tend to land all over the place, but for the second time in a row they've scored a career high at #4. Doja Cat lands a little short of her #3 debut from her last album, but that one also didn't peak on entry so who can say for sure? I don't want to be one of those people who prematurely calls everything a flop and never acknowledges how many times I ended up being wrong. I will freely say to the world that I didn't think "STAY" sounded like a hit when it first dropped, so yeah. Stephen Sanchez scores his first album chart entry while Thy Art Is Murder are up to 6. Next week we see if Kylie Minogue or Olivia Rodrigo can maintain their standing enough to threaten Ed Sheeran's #1 album streak.

I'd say similarly, as much as it seems like lazy coasting/the eventual direction of streaming numbers as a whole, The Weeknd is largely #1 for albums on the back of a bumper streaming year. Globally he's been #1 on monthly listeners pretty much all year, and pulling numbers well above the previous all time high, including with a renewed hit that just so happens to be on that album. The album will probably recede back in the ensuing years.
  20. 5 years later, Furi has overtaken TF2 on steam but also they're both demolished by Tetris 99 which came out a year after this post and I now have 2000 hours in it and counting.

Billie Eilish 49 48 257 01 BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK) Queen 50 50 214 18 LIVE IN BUENOS AIRES Coldplay "Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 5th week. In a shocking twist, it's actually getting less streams this coming week than last week. It's also miles ahead of the competition still, but the cracks are showing I guess. Poised for this is possibly Kenya Grace who has vaulted into the top 10 this week. Not to go unmentioned also is Tate McRae, who instantly scores her highest ever chart position. Not to be confused with Craig McRae who in the world of Australian sportsball is coaching Collingwood to potentially score their record-tying 16th AFL Grand Final win, where he's up against the Brisbane Lions who he himself played for 20 years ago when they annihilated Collingwood in the 2003 Grand Final. We all pray that happens again. RAYE scores her 2nd top 10 hit which is also a first for casso & D-Block Europe. Drake's slow start means that he misses out on a top 10 berth with "Slime You Out" which might not last more than three weeks in the top 50 at this rate. SZA's fortunes are better for "Snooze" which scores a big new peak of #21, SZA costing herself a top 20 peak. In case you were wondering about the race to be the biggest hit of the decade, then you should know that "Heat Waves" is winning that by a lot presently, and has this week at least temporarily overtaken its nearest competition, "As It Was". One has to wonder if a song released after 2023 even has a chance to contend in this race, "Last Night" might be the last song with any chance. Also here's a fun fact, "Mr. Brightside" has the record for the most top 50 re-entries of all time. It already had that before it re-entered this week, but now Mariah Carey won't even match it in December, and in all honestly, will probably just contribute to adding another one to The Killers' tally in 2024. "Mr. Brightside" will also probably become the 7th song to make 100 weeks in the top 50 in two weeks (or 6th if you don't count Fleetwood Mac's pre-ARIA weeks), although "Cold Heart" is just sitting on the cusp of the chart with 99 weeks in so you never know. Olivia Rodrigo scores a second week at #1. For comparison, "SOUR" managed 8 weeks at #1 so she's got some work to do there. In case you're wondering, this is the 8th week at #2 for "The Highlights". Enough people have made it past the 'I'm okay with listening to an artist named Teddy Swims' door to get Teddy Swims his first ever top 50 appearance, with a #4 debut at that. Similarly, enough people have made it past the 'I'm okay with listening to music made by Jared Leto in current year' door to give Thirty Seconds To Mars their 3rd ever top 10 album. Their more popular albums are actually the ones that didn't reach the top 10. Mitski only charted for the first time last year. She's fallen a little short of that benchmark this time with her latest album missing the top 10 but on the other hand she's made the Spotify chart for the first time ever in this past week, I await to see if ARIA are actually counting "My Love Mine All Mine". Sleepy Hallow converts a pretty consistent run of streaming hits to land a top 40 album debut. Australian group C.O.F.F.I.N. are not actually from Coffin Bay, or even South Australia. Actually the name stands for Children Of Finland, Fighting In Norway, the more you know. This is their first ever chart appearance anyway.
