  1. And I've said it before but why does it matter the exact machinations of how someone lands on a stream? I largely do my music listening through a double-nested set of Smart Playlists that dynamically updates itself and makes sure I don't hear the same old songs over and over again. Then I just hit the shuffle button. Simultaneously way more effort and way less effort than most people. If people didn't like the music that's on Today's Top Hits or whatever, they just wouldn't listen to it anymore. If they don't like that one song, they skip it. I don't like the insinuation that everyone but me is an automaton with no agency in the music they choose to listen to. It only looks that way because once you collate millions of people's listens together, you're just not going to see that individual freedom of choice on display, but it is there, being tugged at in a million directions at once. And I like the gross genre elitism even less, yucky.
  2. Can also almost guarantee that if people saw what the chart looked like under that ruling, they'd almost immediately like it even less than the current system.
  3. Everyone always says this but I suspect the empirical data would do more to knee-cap buzzed about current hits rather than the ironed-on ones. People on last.fm have been scrobbling "Mr. Brightside" for 20 years and counting. On average they've listened to it 12 times each. By comparison, it's taken 2 months for Billie Eilish's "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" to reach an average of 15 plays per person. It doesn't feel like a fruitful pursuit.

Back in 2019 it seemed as though the 24 week reign of "Dance Monkey" was a sign of the times going forward. 2024 seems to disagree because we've had 11 different #1 hits in about the same time frame. Maybe this is our new song to break this trend in the same way, just being slightly ahead of the competition for an extended period. Billie Eilish has started to dethrone him on Spotify, but Apple & iTunes are gonna require a much bigger margin to make it over the line. Eminem arrives with many new entries this week. With 13 songs in the top 50, it's the most he's ever simultaneously charted, but in 2018 he actually managed more debuts at once, with 12 new entries that week. My interesting anecdote of this is that "Guilty Conscience" actually never charted in Australia back in the day, so if you were simply following the top 50 without any outsider influence, you'd have no clue what this song is supposed to be a sequel to. You might not even know that the music video (but not the album version) has narration from the iconic Robert Culp. What's your favourite Columbo performance from him? Mine has got to be "Double Exposure" for the quintessential cat-and-mouse game that it is. The scene where he avoids implicating himself by driving to a not-yet-revealed murder location gets me every time. Ice Spice also debuts this week and for the first time ever, she has the first name on a charting entry. Sadly Australian music listeners are not even the fart, much less the shit. Also remember last week when I said that the Bubbling Under chart was on the verge of returning? This week was a massive boon in that as the bottom song on the New Music chart is #43 this week, with only 1 further eligible song in the top 50. Eminem might clear some space next week, but he's also contributing strongly to that chart so it might just cancel out in a couple of weeks. Eminem scores his 11th #1 album this week. You may also be willing to call it his 12th #1 album if you include the "8 Mile" soundtrack, but I'll leave that up to you. The mass exodus of his tracks on the streaming charts suggests a relatively short stay but he's probably good for a second week at least. In what can only be described as a massive plot twist, Clairo who has never made the top 50 before, now arrives at #4. This means that I've never had the chance to put a dreadfully bad joke in this column that causes everyone to walk out the door with their bags. Or to extend my fascination of how much Claire Rosinkranz's "don't miss me" sounds like a parody version of her fellow Claire's recently released "Amoeba". Anyway I need to get around to listening to this album because I heard an album track from it on the radio the other day that sounded pretty good but I don't remember what it was called. Anyway, this week's ACTUAL AUSTRALIAN CONTENT comes in threes, and somewhat different threes but also not really. It's not often that an Australian artist can surpass the tall-poppy syndrome (or the 'who?' syndrome) of our online comment sections, but there is genuinely quite a bit of enthusiasm for the hardcore group Speed. They had a top 5 EP a couple of years ago and now have a top 10 album. Also this week, I have often lamented the fact that the Australian hip-hop canon in the charts kind of just stopped building after around 2014, or just when The Kid LAROI decided to stop rapping. Anyway, we do have the return of Complete this week. Back in 2019 he had a #12 album, which has a song with 47 million plays on Spotify, real Hilltop Hoods numbers. He doesn't have that viral hit around this time but he does return to the top 50 this week. Lastly there's In Hearts Wake sneaking through. A Far cry from their frequent top 5 appearances but we take what we can get nowadays. In the midst of this, Griff & Cigarettes After Sex make their first appearances. Wouldn't have guessed they'd be in that order but whaddaya know.
  5. Feel like a factor comes in that the constant influx of new, massive hits has dried up to an extent. Like the top 10 is still relatively fresh, but it's also still largely the same stuff from over a month ago, and that can only sustain itself for so long.
  6. New Zealand have a chart vaguely of this nature, which tracks week-on-week gains on overall chart metrics plus airplay for some reason (which doesn't factor in the actual chart). If you're in the interest of seeing deeper cuts get some level of chart representation in the Anglosphere, then it's just about your best bet, but I don't think anyone's flocking to look at it now that I've said this. I find this approach just kind of leads to data for the sake of data and it's somewhat meaningless in terms of actually capturing audience habits in a meaningful way. How often is anyone's first listen to a song also their most profound experience with it? How often is it just finding out a notable artist has listened to a new song and checking it out to see if it's any good? I listen to nearly 100 new songs a week and only save about 5 or 6 of them for future listening. I'd hate for my chart contribution to just be one-to-one on everything I listened to, with all-time favourite and forgotten filler treated the same. It's actually my favourite thing about the prioritising of streams compared to downloads. You're actually weighting that significance with your listening habits. I understand that this leads to an inherently more 'boring' chart, but it's far more accurate. It's where I come at odds with any sort of chart tinkering generally. How much can people be willing to distort the reality for the sake of a more interesting picture? How cognizant of this distortion can one be while also convincing themselves that the Frankenchart holds credibility? It's like playing Chess against the same pre-programmed bot over and over again. Eventually you're gonna piece together its general procedure. The artifice of playing against an actual opponent will slip away, and it'll be boring.
  7. Good fix would be to stop truncating credits to the point of ambiguity/omission. If they simply must have the excessive amount of empty space on the increasingly large chart presentation they've got, then just make some alt-text or something.
  8. Think the fact that it regularly does pop up on Spotify tells the story enough. Probably 500K+ a week there, which over the course of an entire year makes for a pretty handy figure.

  10. I still maintain that it kind of was a one-off, or at the very least the most extreme culmination. From my recollection it took nearly 6 years for Taylor Swift to have 9 out of 10 on the weekly Spotify chart (and no one else has done it?), itself such an extreme she couldn't even do it with her latest album. But the doom-and-gloom posting of the time seemed to think that Ed's scale of domination was going to become the new normal.
  11. CCR have been doing great numbers on Spotify for years. Both songs have been continuously on the Australian Spotify chart for the last 14 months, so probably just hovering around in the UK too.
  12. I don't usually catch current hits out in the wild. "Beautiful Things" is the biggest hit of the year over here and I wouldn't know it exists if I didn't read the charts. With that in mind, Kendrick's stuff feels like it's making the most impact in my closed circle.
  13. Another banger. Nice cheeky "Make You Mine" reference too ;)
  14. Oh of course I should've thought of that
  15. I will say with regards to newer songs on this list, I'm a little surprised "As It Was" isn't even higher. Obviously it's just one source, but it was top 50 of all time on Global Spotify by the end of 2022, and #5 nowadays (in less than a week it'll be #4 too!). It's a pretty big discrepancy to only be #53 on this list. link to bluesky post I made about the old vs. new streaming focus at the start of the year, this stuff interests me a lot.

"A Bar Song (Tipsy)" is #1 for a second week. You know what they say, the chart is very equilibrium based so once you get to the top spot, it's hard to naturally be unseated. This flies in the face of the very rapid turn around at the top lately but I posit that in the past month there hasn't been much in the way of that constant stream of new smash hits. You may have forgotten that the Bubbling Under section exists in this thread, as it's gone AWOL for 10 weeks straight, to the point that the bottom song on the New Music chart has often been in the top 30 lately! That might be changing soon as the crop of new hits that ushered in this era are all about to age out of it. "i like the way you kiss me", "Too Sweet" and "Slow It Down" are all leaving it this week. Eminem's new album should fill in the gaps next week but I can't say for sure they'll be sticking around. There's not much else to talk about this week. We've got a handful of debuts, it's a first time on the chart for BabyTron, but in keeping with the chart slow down, none are especially zooming up the chart right now. Yes it is very funny that "360" actually managed to debut 2 weeks after I thought it wasn't going to. Billie Eilish returns to #1 for a 5th week. Zach Bryan still can't make the stars align. His self-titled album entered at #2 behind a re-issue, now he's stuck still unable to match the lingering streams of these two months old albums. If you're a fan of neat little patterns and I'm sure you are, then you'll be delighted to know that all of last week's debuts dropped out of the top 50, and nothing else. I don't think that will happen again next week but we also only have two debuts. For the other one, if you ever want to make a throwaway joke about an artist who keeps changing their stage name but don't want to talk about that guy anymore, then I present Eves Karydas because it's the 4th name she's put out music under. I'm actually surprised to realise that this is her first top 50 album because I would've guessed her previous album entered in the top 10 but I digress. I'm going to digress even further because it presents me an opportunity to highlight the state of the industry in a way that's judgemental to you, strawman. Eves was signed to a major label in 2014. She never really hit it big but her early singles did pretty well on the iTunes chart, and a couple more since then have gotten certifications. In 2022 she posted an essay on Instagram about her experience as a woman in the music industry. About how she was essentially forced to objectify herself to be marketable and would spend more time working on that than actually making music. Definitely worth a read and worth doing some self-reflection as to whether or not you are more likely to listen to music made by a woman if she's physically attractive and whether you're a cog in that supposedly sexist music industry that is equally just reciprocating the whims of its buyers. She ended the post by announcing that she was going independent, and she has done so for this album with no label or manager. As literally the only Australian album in the top 50 this week, this can be seen as a success I think. I've been enjoying recently. I don't do much parasocial media so I mostly don't know what they look like. Your favourite pop star is not going to ever be romantically linked to you, I'm sorry. Also if you feel slighted by this strawman, I apologise. But to re-iterate, it's very valuable to self-reflect on these things, I know I have. Oh and Teddy Swims is currently in the country. That's why his album re-entered and he's gonna climb even more next week.

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the 3rd album in a row that Eminem's had a delayed physical release on, it's pretty expected at this point.
  18. I get that it's generally an SEO thing but I find it funny because Spotify's search engine is already built for people who don't know the names of songs

The stars finally align for Shaboozey to take the top spot. This makes for probably at least 2 songs that got to #1 thanks to strong iTunes sales this year, possibly 3 as I'm not sure about "Houdini". I can never really read into YouTube stats until after the fact so there is a slight possibility that "Not Like Us" could climb to the top spot but I suspect the top 3 are probably out of reach. Speaking of the top 3 being out of reach, Billie Eilish now has a new highest charting song from the current album as "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" gets to #4. Chappell Roan also has a top 10 hit and a further entry lower down, we are nothing if not just a pale imitation of all the other charts. But we have one thing the other countries don't which is the NEW AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON. It's almost as rare as a North Melbourne win and we were even blessed with that this weekend. The Kid LAROI actually has two songs in the top 30 this week as "NIGHTS LIKE THIS" also has a big climb. I would really be highly amused if it got nominated for a Single Of The Year ARIA Award but I suspect it's too late in the year to accumulate the sales if they haven't tracked its sales prior to this month. That makes 5 new Australian songs in the top 50 this year. Sneaking into the top 50 this week is Dominic Fike, who despite many minor successes, is only just now getting a second top 50 hit after "3 Nights". Given the relative streaming numbers on Spotify, I'd hazard a guess that the album chart was decided by pure sales as well as Taylor Swift returns to #1 for a 5th week. Chappell Roan has also climbed all the way up to #4, probably too far away to catch the top 2 unless she really maintains this momentum for several more weeks. He's kept out of the top 10 by a fellow 'starts and ends with O', but Omar Apollo has his first charting album this week at a not-too-shabby #11. Behind him is Imagine Dragons, who notably started their chart career off with 4 #4 albums but have found themselves in double digits ever since. This is their lowest charting album but not by very much. Camila Cabello's last album came with a pretty big hit but only debuted at #27, all things considered maybe #29 is a relative success? Lastly our weekly Australian 1 week content comes from Hiatus Kaiyote & Maundz. Both have charted two albums before this although Hiatus Kaiyote's last landed at #4, so this is a bit of a drop off. Once again Luke Combs' 2nd album is at #50, it has still never left the top 50 for a week, but continues to be on thin ice.

  22. This is a very minor one (I didn't realise until checking now that it never charted in the UK, just top 50 on the download chart which maybe was modestly close), but in 2016 Halsey did a triple j Like A Version cover of Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" but with the ha ha twist they say the rude word that Justin's only implying ha ha. It would've aired on the radio in mid-January except...David Bowie died, and the station decided to switch out on the weekly segment and do a David Bowie cover. Halsey's segment would end up getting delayed a couple of weeks (they'd already recorded it and left the country but they sometimes air them on a delay). In this interim period, another cover of the song with the same premise by Yo Preston & Kelly Kiara goes viral briefly, before going viral a second time and becoming a top 20 hit in Australia and briefly top 20 on UK iTunes. I can't help but wonder if Halsey's version had already made it online before that first stint, even though it never got put on DSPs, there's a chance that the second version loses its novelty factor and never takes off. Mainly I just like to entertain that David Bowie dying is responsible for it being a hit.
  23. I don't think of this as especially a fluke. Maybe getting to #1 exceeds expectations, but the song was released through Atlantic Records and they farmed cheap virality out of it. Her not getting another major hit is just standard bad artist management. Proper flukes I find are hard to come by. I'd think something like "Harness Your Hopes", the random b-side that became Pavement's career defining song due to an algorithm quirk, except that's never really charted. Maybe Richy Mitch is something similar but I've never really looked into it. Maybe that fake JLS song

Pond 50 43 336 01 THE EMINEM SHOW Eminem "Please Please Please" is #1 for a second week. Will it be #1 next week? Maybe. Shaboozey is back to #2 and is definitely thinning the margin but it might not be enough. We have multiple new arrivals that don't look to necessarily break through to the top but I guess something has to eventually. Gracie Abrams picks up another entry, but unless it finds some second wind, the story of "us." looks a lot like a tragedy. It'll last a second week in the top 50 for sure though. Maybe more likely to climb is Tommy Richman who not only has a second song in the top 50 but now we also have a second song in the top 50 that tells us the devil is a lie. The other one rebounds a lot this week for completely unrelated reasons. I'm a little surprised to say that Blake Shelton is getting his first ever top 50 hit this week. Ariana Grande returns thanks to the new version of "the boy is mine", a reminder that the song's peak position is borked because something weird happened on the week it debuted and it should've charted a lot higher. Charli XCX debuts thanks to the new version of "girl, so confusing". Neither version is in the top 200 on Spotify anymore so I have no idea what it's gonna do but this looks like a one week wonder. "360" looked like it was getting pretty close to the top 50 but doesn't appear to be happening anymore. Also most importantly, Australian music is now saved thanks to an 80 second interlude by The Kid LAROI. That's time to ring out the NEW AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON although technically it doesn't qualify under the New Music chart rules. We're up to 4 new Australian songs in the top 50 this week, and the 4 month gap has served us with some potential energy as The Kid LAROI is gonna get ANOTHER top 50 hit next week. Once again nepotism has struck and the top end of the album chart has to contend with another album funded by the crimes against humanity committed by the artist's father. But enough about Sheppard, we've got a new #1 album from Gracie Abrams. In what has been a bumper year for mostly massive pop stars getting the #1 slot week in week out, this could be a relative tide-turn. On the other hand, Taylor Swift is on this album so maybe it doesn't really count. Just sneaking into the top 50 this week, The Story So Far missed with their last album but return to get a second top 50. Pond are usually more reliable for a top 50 placement, but they're quite a way down from the top 10 finish on their previous album.
