  1. Fair enough in general but I think you might be reading too much into an Instagram story with no caption? I don't necessarily disagree in the case of Travis Scott (although I'm not sure I've seen him say anything about it, I don't always keep up with that sort of minutiae), but unless there's TMZ footage of Alex Warren cackling as he sends the all-clear to Warner employees to mass-consume and astroturf his single, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt!
  2. Person I like does something bad: Nah I get where they're coming from, people need to put themselves in their shoes Person I don't like does something good: They're just doing it to make themselves look good, don't fall for it!
  3. Initially the 3rd movie was supposed to end at the fairground with the three main characters surviving but test audiences weren't satisfied so they filmed the train sequence months later (not long before it came out!), they were supposed to also get her and the cop from FD2 on the train but one of the actors was busy so they left them out. No doubt in my mind they absolutely want to kill her off for good in a future film, death doesn't like loose ends etc.
  4. Thought it was pretty good myself.
  5. Yeah, the seasonal thing did come to mind actually, these are the only two countries I can see sufficient stats for that just started winter, but on the other hand, last year the song just rebounded a week later like nothing happened. Either it's a single algorithmic glitch, or it's an algorithmic quirk that's made someone go 'hang on, we need our mandated 80K daily "Riptide" streams' and then it gets 'fixed'.
  6. Hey, remember a year ago when I said "Riptide" was exhibiting a huge boost everywhere but Australia & New Zealand (where it actually dropped a lot)? Would you believe that exactly a year later the same thing has happened?

As best I can tell, his lead is actually increasing at the moment, so 11 seems a pretty likely bet. I don't want to make any assumptions beyond that because yesterday's Spotify chart was a little erratic and hints a potential paradigm shift, though not one that could feasibly get through with half a week left to go. Alex Warren also has another debut, giving him 3 simultaneous top 20 entries. I'm going to assume he didn't intentionally ape the subtitle of a very popular film in the box office at the moment, but it would've given him the chance to make the funniest music video. This is Jelly Roll's second appearance in the Australian top 50, following his Eminem collaboration last year. I promised myself on my blog last month that I wasn't going to write anything more about MGK and so he has a debut here, but you'll have to go somewhere else to get your regular dopamine fix from hearing someone say his music is bad and feeling gratified that you already decided that anyway. Morgan Wallen makes it two weeks at #1. I didn't write anything last week but I hadn't realised in that moment that his last album "One Thing At A Time" didn't actually debut at #1, falling short of a fairly incumbent Harry Styles. He did some Australian promo soon after though and the album ended up spending two non-consecutive weeks at #1 later on, so this new one has already matched that. The other very fascinating news this week is the incredulous vaults of Pitbull, who has now gotten his "Greatest Hits" set all the way into the top 10 at #9. Maroon 5 have been trying to do this for like 5 years now and this guy just waltzes in like it's no big deal. He's still seeing streaming gains this week so he might even climb some more, not to mention he has an Australian tour later this year, what an odd result. We've got some extremely Australian millennial nostalgia going on this week as well, as Kisschasy's second album returns to the chart, this week as the highest Australian album which it couldn't manage when it debuted at #5 back in 2007. You might know it as the album that has the song "Opinions Won't Keep You Warm At Night", which I always remember as the song that spent the longest time on the jtv Saturday countdown in its day, with its immortal chorus of 'SOMETIMES, ~incomprehensible words follow~ AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID'. Then lastly we've got another Australian debut from Private Function, the punk band that embody the tag to the fullest with their memorable antics and marketing tactics. Their Wikipedia page is a worthwhile read.
  8. Point of the market decline rule is that in theory, everything is seeing a general decline, so if you're declining less than everything else, you probably would be gaining under usual circumstances. It'd be like for instance if there's a big World Cup game on, and suddenly a large swathe of the population who might otherwise be listening to music for some of those 2 hours are glued to the game, causing a slight dip pretty much across the board. There may be edge cases, a bunch of people who were listening to the new Sleep Token album when it came out probably didn't just listen to the same amount of music the week before or after, so that's a slight market shift that's not massively affecting anything else. I could see the argument then that they shouldn't have it both ways, and so a market increase shouldn't allow for ACR dodging if the individual increase is less than the market, but I think the point of the set up is to try and be certain that the songs are on their way out, and 3 consecutive declines beyond the market is reasonable enough proof to them. Unless there's solid evidence to suggest an increased volume of serial ACR dodgers that are singlehandedly preventing livelier chart activity, I don't think the OCC are going to see any problem with what's going on at the moment. Although maybe I'm wrong to say that given how readily they've jumped the gun on this before.
  9. What I meant to say was that if you got rid of the 3 track rule, there just wouldn't be anywhere near the disruption that might have felt like the inevitable future of the charts at that point. Those 4 albums I mentioned were all released in the space of 2 months. No single album in 2025 so far has matched any of them for just how much streaming real estate they took up. I looked through the year of Spotify charts and only really Central Cee managed more than 5-6 entries at once, he had 8 songs in the Spotify top 50. All of those albums I mentioned had more than that, including a Drake album that was released this year (Kendrick had a good showing late last year, but still less than he had with "DAMN."). I know Taylor Swift is still more than capable of doing this and it's a matter of time, but I don't think anyone in 2017 was suggesting this sort of chart activity was on the way out. If anything it felt like more and more artists were going to be capable of doing it. With that in mind, it feels like the OCC over-reacted to a future they couldn't fully predict. You're right that it still happens a lot on the Billboard Hot 100, but I think America has a more fragmented melting pot of music taste that more easily allows it to happen (or maybe music promotion is just more aggressive, I'm not sure). Enough to even offset the radio airplay factor that stacks the deck against it. That and the Hot 100 is arguably excluding way more songs to reach their #100 than the UK charts, so I'd hesitate to acknowledge it as significantly below the top 50 zone with all the recurrency. I get that a lot of people dislike those weeks on the chart but I've always found them exciting and interesting as a disruption of the humdrum weeks, and a chance for a lot of really interesting stuff to appear on the chart that would never make it through the usual cycle of single promotion on playlists & the radio. Really, I just like the charts not to be tampered with; give us the raw data, not a false image of what the general public is listening to.
  10. I think no matter what system you concoct for this, there are always going to be exceptions that muddy it up on both sides of the fence. Songs like "Heat Waves" & "Levitating" maybe don't come to mind as being hard done by, but probably were worthy of getting a proper showing of their second winds. Or "Something In The Orange" as an example of a hit that probably would have made the top 40(? Correct me if I'm wrong, I see it made #60 on streaming but don't know how many ACR songs it'd be jumping), but is arbitrarily beholden to an earlier stint of its chart run. But then that's the challenge of coming up with the system in 2017 with no idea what the state of music consumption to come was going to be. Even that isolated pocket came after Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Drake & Kendrick Lamar had all overflowed the chart in quick succession, making that seem like the norm to come...except those kinds of streaming performances are no way near as common now in 2025 as I think people would have expected back then. Once the chart starts getting treated like this, the notion that everything is going to retain the same justified rank of represented popularity, just on closer margins, is too crazy a pipe dream to consider, and it's better to treat ACR as just a means to allow more songs onto the chart, which it does. If Alex Warren or Benson Boone go onto ACR right now, their songs will probably still be in the top 40(? Again, not sure, maybe "Beautiful Things" drops to #45 or something), that's not adding any new songs onto the chart, just slightly adding to the rankings of the ones that are already there. I've never liked the idea of ACR as a satisfying send-off to a plaguing hit, because the very nature of it has never been satisfying to me. I want to feel like that song I dislike has actually been shifted out of the collective conscious, not just pushed aside arbitrarily so I can pretend that it's not there until the End Of Year chart confronts me with the truth. I don't like the idea that the only reason ACR exists is because deep down, there's a Facebook boomer brain in everyone that doesn't want to see the new generation's mangled charts and lousy stars take over all the cherished records of the past. There's a line I've seen in a few stories I've read recently, where a 'crooked' game master always feels compelled to provide a chance for their player to win their rigged game, because with no chance for the game master to lose, there's no excitement for them. What's the excitement of a record for sales, weeks in the top 10 or whatever if the OCC is actively making sure they can't get broken? That's boring. I hope Alex Warren does get 17+ weeks at #1, partly so I never have to hear the phrase 'Bryan Adams record' again, and because he'll have had to beat a system that's designed to stop it from ever happening to do so.
  11. I don't even think it's necessarily true that Hot Hits isn't impactful. Sure, we're a far cry from when it may have dictated the chart to a near 1:1 replica, but it can't all just be measured in terms of an instant boost. If someone hears a song on the playlist and saves it, not only are they likely generating future plays long beyond that song's tenure on the playlist, but they're influencing the algorithm, pushing related songs in front of other related songs because they're listening to them instead of something else. I remember songs like "I Like Me Better" that were aggressively pushed on these playlists for months and months and by the time it was finally taken off, it didn't even collapse completely because that time was spent germinating the seeds of future streams. The 1.4 million people who listened to "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac on Spotify yesterday are largely not thinking about the skateboard TikTok, they might not even be aware of it. But a lot of those same people wouldn't be listening to the song if that TikTok didn't exist, it's the same principle. But also it's intrinsically interesting in terms of label manoeuvres. It might not be the complete package, but it's still part of the pie chart of discovery sources, one of many egg-ready baskets.

It's me, I'm an indie guy! I think "Heads Will Roll" (both versions) has more cultural cache than "Maps" nowadays, encounter it more in the wild. It's like the Whitney Houston situation. "I Will Always Love You" feels like a career defining moment, and for a long time it was the Whitney Houston song (I know it's a cover), but I think situationally now, more people choose to listen to "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" because it's more fun, and so now that's arguably her biggest song.
  14. 4th now, "do i ever cross your mind", while "would've been you" vaults up quite a bit.

Some 10-20 years ago, Australia would often act as a canary in the mineshaft, indicating future hits before they capture larger markets. Now we just follow everyone else. I'm just saying this sentence that comes off as unnecessarily cynical because the short version is that you probably won't see a new #1 here before the UK does as well. On the other hand, sombr is performing just a little bit better here, and he's now got two simultaneous top 10 hits as "back to friends" makes the jump. On the weekend, Melbourne footballer and 2021 Norm Smith medallist Christian Petracca will play his 200th game, and also "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls will make 200 weeks in the ARIA top 100. The song was released shortly after Trac's 2nd birthday. "Dreams" is also getting just a little bit closer to the all time record in the top 50. Off the back of some singles I thought to be hilariously bad, Sleep Token score their first ever #1 album this week. They spoil the party for Western Australia. Though for the first time in a year, both of the state's football teams managed to get a win, but their biggest musical export of late in Spacey Jane are unable to score back to back #1 albums. Their previous album managed some of the biggest first week figures of 2022 so I assume they didn't go down without a fight. Elsewhere this week, PinkPantheress cracks the top 50 album chart for the first time at #12. It's also a first time in for Kali Uchis surprisingly.
  16. I think anyone complaining about privilege & nepotism, popular music might just not be for them. It's just a crummy argument to try and validate either the ick or a general dislike of someone's music with a veil of 'objectivity' so you can act superior to the people who were 'fooled' into liking them. Bottom rung discourse. And bringing it up just serves to keep the artist in the conversation, so they'd be better off talking about the music they actually like and spreading those names around.
  17. Would also argue that in the greater scheme of things, #200 is still at the top, rather than the bottom. (and a year ago there were like 20 Taylor Swift songs in there, things like that do inflate the thresholds)

If you're looking for a change, either go elsewhere, or convince thousands and thousands of Australians to part with $2 as a bit, decide which is easier for yourself. The big vaulter this week is sombr who has taken himself from one ignominious peak to another, with "undressed" jumping #11 to #2, while "back to friends" nearly reclaims the other one as well. He'll probably notch up the second top 10 next week but he's suffering a brutal conversion rate outside of Spotify at the moment, which is another sign to Alex Warren just clearing the pack right now. Last year Jessie Murph snuck in a first top 50 hit alongside Koe Wetzel on "High Road", but now "Blue Strips" gets her there on her own, and it looks like lasting more than a week at that. Gracie Abrams returns to #1 for a 3rd week. That checks in as first week release, belated physical re-release, and now touring boost. All she's missed out on are the deluxe release boost and the 'everything falling into place to sneak ahead of the competition organically' weeks, although maybe this week counts as that to some extent. Otherwise it's one of those ominous slow weeks where that Maroon 5 compilation that looked resigned to the 20s again has come soaring back to nearly hit the top 10, the new song with LISA hasn't demonstrably impacted the charts here but maybe this is proof that it has. Anyway, DOPE LEMON is the only reason they don't get there this week. It doesn't feel very long ago since I last had to bring him up. Technically that's true, I wrote about Angus & Julia Stone on my blog last week and the feeling of arbitrary success in the streaming era (might be worth a read, I was pretty happy with how this entry turned out), but it has been 18 months since the last DOPE LEMON album. We were on the precipice of something enormous for chart nerding as he debuts at #8. Just a little lower and he'd have a fun little pattern of chart peaks, with two #2 albums and another #9 alongside this. Pink Floyd also debut in the top 30 but if you close your eyes you can almost feel like it was never there when it's gone next week. Long lasting Canadian punk band Propagandhi got their first ever top 50 album here with their last album, and 8 years later they return and do it again.
  19. I think the most interesting thing about this song is that in the age of trending in the other direction, it's a massive smash hit that's inexplicably nearly 5 minutes long. It doesn't qualify in the UK but it's actually a highly interesting #1 hit in Australia because I'm almost certain it topped the charts because of a music poll it didn't even win (I wrote about it on Reddit)
  20. Dircadirca posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
Feel like you're downplaying the success of "One Dance" just because it doesn't pass a 'vibe' check. Maybe there's a certain omnipresence that Ed Sheeran exhibits because he's followed by a more traditional channel of listeners, but the numbers speak for themselves. Both are similarly successful songs, and while I'll concede "Shape Of You" is probably the bigger hit overall, it's not a world of difference. Drake getting more weeks at #1 is just a quirk of the charts (like "Taste" spending longer at #1 than "Espresso"), either by accident or design, his song better utilised its time in the spotlight, which is an increasingly brief blip on their overall time around. These songs have existed for another ~400 weeks since leaving the top spot and they're still being listened to by millions every day. Could be possible that there are testimonials from people who can attest they flocked to Spotify solely because "One Dance"'s unavailability was the final straw, but that would be a marginal bonus at best, and would also force any deniers to accept a credible cultural pull from this otherwise non-descript hit.
  21. I feel like whenever I explain to someone how the UK charts work, it's just this endless series of 'well it works like this except there are exceptions like that and...' and I just know that absolutely no one's taking this in correctly.
  22. Just got back from an advance screening. Had so much fun. Won't spoil anything specific, but lots of fun nods to the earlier movies, and so much playing with your expectations. I think my favourite in the series is either 3 or 5, the former just has the best death sequences bar none and the latter comes close too in addition to the best plot twist they'll ever do, but great Rube Goldberg shenanigans either way.

I don't see anything challenging it still. Of most note this week, Lorde debuts in the top 10. This is an improvement on "Solar Power" back in 2021 which did not manage it, but not quite the #4 heights of "Green Light". I always find it interesting to note that it debuted on the same week Ed Sheeran's entire album did, but Lorde still had the highest debut that week. I'll probably mention this on my blog when it eventually gets to "Green Light". Charli XCX also gets an old school debut in "party 4 u", from her 2020 album. Gracie Abrams is currently touring in Australia if you were wondering about all her climbs this week. Ghost have been creeping upwards with each successive album and now score their first ever #1. Sam Barber also climbs into the top 50. I don't know if it's because of an increase in listenership over the whole thing because it's one of those biiiig albums, or it just has enough hits to become one of those albums.

May as well notch in that 6th week already while you're at it. Previously on the ARIA Chart during sede vacante (ie no current Pope) our #1 hits have been "Beautiful Soul" by Jesse McCartney, "Harlem Shake" by Baauer & "Just Give Me A Reason" by P!nk. The aforementioned promise of "Pink Pony Club" climbing to #2 has come through, which means that 11 of the top 12 now have reached the top 2, talk about sharing. sombr might be looking at changing that as "undressed" climbs very rapidly and should reach the top 10 next week. After 6 months on the chart, "Bad Dreams" reaches a new peak of #26, and is ahead of "The Door" for the first time ever I think. There are no actual debuts this week, if there were, we might have witnessed a bizarre plummet out of the chart for Ed Sheeran from #20, in case you needed more evidence that the Spotify chart screw up has really faceplanted that song's progress. It still hasn't made it back into the Spotify top 50. Sabrina Carpenter makes it 13 weeks at #1 on the album chart. Last time she was at #1 I noted that she had 6 concurrent Spotify top 200 songs doing the legwork. That is still true, although "Juno" has dropped out a couple of times now, a mere drop of irrelevance all things considered as most of her songs are climbing again. She benefits from the fact that very few artists release new music on Easter. I don't think that also still applies to ANZAC Day which was on Friday (Australian lesson: It's April 25th every year). One band that didn't take this hint was Beddy Rays who enter in the top 20. Back in 2022 they entered in the top 10 and I suspect I fascinated you by telling you that their name is a spoonerism on Reddy Bay. I may or may not have said they're pretty good but I'll take the time to say that now. If I'm exceptionally bored next week I might regale you with a history on #1 hits that coincide with Australian Federal Elections, as we've got one of those on the weekend.
  25. Placebo - Special K is another one that was ineligible in the UK due to its irregular two CD single release I believe.
