For only the 3rd time this year, we have a new #1. I don't know if there's any proof that moving into the #1 spot is a 'big deal' that generates more buzz, but it is interesting to me that "Last Night" is showing big gains again after seemingly fading on Spotify lately. If it's true though, we could see some galvanising that'll solidify Morgan Wallen at #1 for a while because I'm not sure what's supposed to take over. David Kushner is maybe hoping for a top 5 debut but I'm not yet convinced this isn't another one of those "Fingers Crossed" type deals that fade once the radio audience doesn't replace the TikTok audience fast enough. On an unrelated note, Drake debuts in the top 10, and won't be in the top 10 next week, you know the drill. Unless the last two days are a complete aberration, perhaps Glass Animals will be back to extend their reign for longest running top 10 hit ever. I noticed the other day that Ed Sheeran's "Shivers" became one of a very small group of songs that have been in the ARIA top 10 in 3 different calendar years. The only other non-Christmas songs I can think of that have done this are "Black Or White" and "I Will Always Love You", but "Heat Waves" could join this odd group next week. If not, at least it was a good excuse for me to research this odd curiosity. Speaking of songs that are allergic to not being in the chart, Lewis Capaldi is back with another attempt to have the longest reigning top 50 hit of all time. "Someone You Loved" is back up to #30 this week and is still making gains on Spotify well over a week after the documentary came out, which might be because he was announced as a sort of headliner for Splendour In The Grass. The rule of inertia means that the song could continue to remain in the top 50 for a long time. On an unrelated note, "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac is also back. I feared there might only be one Australian song in the top 50 this week but against all odds, "Love Again" survived another week and "Rhyme Dust" even snuck back in. Lastly, NLE Choppa gets his first ever chart entry here. He's made the Spotify chart a few times before but I don't recall what's actually been let on the ARIA Chart before. "Rhyme Dust"'s return also prevents the New Music chart from tying its record on Christmas for having only 8 songs in the top 50. We might be safe from that list getting smaller in the near future with David Kushner & Labrinth climbing up, and maybe Kanii can reach the top 50 next week too, hard to tell with the two versions. For the first time this year, we have an Australian artist at #1. It comes from perennial stalwarts Cub Sport hitting #1 for the first time in their career. In case you were wondering, Cub Sport have been around since 2010. For a few years they were known as Cub Scouts but then got an injunction from Scouts Australia. They'd released a bunch of EPs but didn't actually put out a full length until 2016, and it's not unreasonable to say that the song "Come On Mess Me Up" sent them to the relative stratosphere. Around the same time, the lead singer came out and married the keyboard player, with many of their songs of late exploring this relationship. This new #1 keeps off NF, who can take solace in now having hit the 3 highest prime number ranks on the chart. Linkin Park return to the top 10 with "Meteora". You'd think it would've been a sure bet for #1 back in 2003 but unfortunately they chose to release it on the same week as Delta Goodrem's debut album, the first of 29 weeks that "Innocent Eyes" spent at #1. Lower down, Cub Sport were actually beaten on the vinyl chart this week by Frenzal Rhomb who score their 4th top 20 peak, having gotten as high as #9 in 2017. It's been almost 20 years since Jay from Frenzal made a fool out of Kyle Sandilands in a radio interview and we're still stuck with him on the airwaves being generally awful. The 1975 are back on the album chart corresponding with them playing shows here recently. Daniel Caesar gets his second top 50 album, and has been on a pretty solid run of singles lately in my opinion. Next week is Metallica's for the taking and perhaps The Wolfe Brothers can provide our weekly Australian contingent.

The rebound is happening in every country so I'm not sure there's any reason to speculate UK chart specific conspiracy.

Official Charts needs you!
Thing with this is that it might seem sound in theory, but in reality, the actual experience is probably not what you expect. Take for instance, a select handful of songs and their ratio of listeners:plays on last.fm, which doesn't really correlate to 'long charting songs are propelled by the same people playing it again and again' (I've always said in the case of The Killers, people do not actually listen to it that often, it's just that it's had 2 decades of pop culture relevance so it's known by *soooooo* many more people than anything new in the charts. If these people stream it once a year, it'll clown on most of the current hits)

Most controversial UK #1 ever?
But by the same token, I believe "House Every Weekend" would otherwise still be #1 if it didn't coincide with Spotify losing its data on that particular week.

If you want to make for an interesting target, the uncredited but Billy Ray Cyrus assisted "Old Town Road" spent 13 weeks at #1. On the other hand, it seems strongly likely that this will be the last week at #1 for Miley because "Last Night" was super close this week and is eating further into that gap on streaming so far this week. The top end of the chart is fairly stagnant and well engaged into 'actually the older songs kick out the newer ones' mode. Drake could potentially debut into the top 10 and be a further example of this, but it's also possible we could see strong engagement for Luke Combs' cover of "Fast Car". Given that ARIA's website includes outrageously large Last Week positions, we have complete confirmation that the song was not included whatsoever last week, but in any case it's definitely on the up from there anyway. Australia does have a strong fascination with that particular Tracy Chapman song, given that the original went into the top 5, and then in 2016 we had two separate cover versions charting side by side with one bafflingly going to #1. With his previous highest being #12, this has a strong chance to become Luke Combs' first ever top 10 hit in the coming weeks. Speaking of songs not included on last week's survey, Tyler, The Creator makes the top 50 with "DOGTOOTH", which admittedly would not have gotten close to the chart on its midweek release but it's still worth pointing out these chart inaccuracies when they pop up. The real curiosity is that the song definitely only made the top 50 because of Hot Hits Australia's uncharacteristic fondness for it, helping steady its decline enough for it to hang on here for a week. Speaking of bizarre Spotify things, briefly over the weekend they put Meghan Trainor's "Made You Look" at the very top of the playlist, and then put it right back down to the bottom, feeling like a sort of drunk with power moment or maybe someone just wants to measure how much of a difference playlist position makes. Fifty Fifty get their first top fifty hit which I assume is good news if you like songs that sound like those Dr. Luke hit songs in recent years. Jisoo becomes the 3rd member of BLACKPINK to score a solo top 50 hit, while we have very belated entrances for both Bailey Zimmerman and Libianca. "Rock and a Hard Place" first started charting here almost a year ago, and follows in the line of many US hit songs that go high on initial streaming buzz but go even higher ages later when radio catches up even if the streaming has fizzled a bit since then. It is quite common though in some of these cases to see a decent boost over here that coincides with it though. The Bubbling Under chart gets bigger this week as SZA's album no longer qualifies as New Music, and actually Libianca also just tipped over. Central Cee will be off either next week or the week after too, it's currently the last 2022 hold out. Not much to note this week apart from the fact I'm slightly surprised Jimin managed a second week. For the second time in their career, DMA'S hit the #2 spot. Their previous album "The Glow" chose a battle with Lime Cordiale that they were likely never going to win, but maybe it's impressive that they managed to out-debut Juice WRLD's first posthumous album (though it went to #1 the very next week). DMA'S had a 7 year streak of entries in triple j's Hottest 100 that ended when they failed to manifest in 2021, but it's a streak that I think only The Living End, Illy & Peking Duk can lay claim to having beaten. They only barely made this year's list with only one of their several releases so I don't know if this album will be able to maintain their usual standard of spending more than 1 week in the top 50. Likely it means another week in a row where every Australian album in the top 50 is one that just debuted there and will be gone next week. Speaking of which, maybe the most interesting entry this week comes from Private Function. They're a band that doesn't really get a lot of airplay anywhere, but I heard about this album a while ago when it was revealed that it was initially considered illegal to sell in South Australia. The reason being that the album's vinyl contains a scratchie ticket in the sleeve with a potential prize, which is illegal to do so in South Australia without a permit. To my knowledge they will eventually press the album without it so that South Australians can buy it, but either way, it's a very funny story and it probably helped this lesser known band chart as high as #11 this week. Also the album title is very funny if you read it upside down. In-between these, we've got a top 3 debut for boygenius. Phoebe Bridgers and Julian Baker have both made the top 50 before but this is comfortably their highest chart position to date. I've also always suspected that Julian Baker's "Something" is a lost Hottest 100 hit that got a lot of buzz and airplay in 2016 but was ineligible for polling because it came out the year before. Phoebe herself has had a curious history with the poll due to limited airplay which felt out of step, but funnily enough "Kyoto" nearly polled with practically no airplay at the time. I think they've finally caught up to this though because "Sidelines" did start getting airplay and snuck into this year's list. "Emily I'm Sorry" is getting quite a bit of airplay from this album so maybe there's more to come. City and Colour debuts in the top 20, he's previously had 4 solo top 10 albums, getting as high as #2 on his own, but also again hitting #2 in his collaboration album with P!nk. Alexisonfire only once narrowly made the top 20. Tyler, The Creator returns on the back of the album's extension, and that's about all to note this week. Next week's 1 week Australian contingent looks to potentially be Cub Sport and Frenzal Rhomb. Possibly NF has a chance at the top?

Things are tightening up so it could forfeit next week, but Morgan Wallen is also showing declines across the board at a similar rate. Never before has the top of the chart been so close and yet so not competitive as pretty much nothing is building traction anymore. Ed Sheeran does arrive in the top 10 but is not getting some magical streaming boost in week 2 so he looks to fall back down too. Speaking of magical streaming boosts, Taylor Swift climbs up a little with her song that dropped 20 places on Spotify the other day. If the BTS Army's aim was to get a Hot 100 #1 and also to land next to "ceilings" on both the ARIA & UK Charts, then they've succeeded on both counts. Otherwise it's been a notable week for Luke Combs, who earns two new top 50 entries this week with two of his previously released singles. It's important to note that they're older singles because it seems that Sony have omitted to submit all the new tracks to the survey. Maybe the popularity of "Fast Car" caught them by surprise and it'll turn up on the chart next week or the week after. To my surprise Libianca is getting very close to the top 50 and might just do it next week as there should be less competition. Morgan Wallen debuts another entry on the Bubbling Under chart by way of the 3 track rule, and "Rhyme Dust" recovers due to finally getting added to Hot Hits Australia. By the way there are only two Australian tracks in the top 50 and it might go down to 1 next week. "STAY" jumping ahead of "Love Again" means that The Kid LAROI could potentially claim the title of longest running #1 on the Australian ARIA Chart, currently he's a couple of weeks behind "Dance Monkey", but would be far ahead if he'd stopped releasing new singles that keep knocking "STAY" off. As for the albums chart, you can't spell Luke Combs without a capital L, which in this instance takes further form in Lana Del Rey. She hit #1 with her first 4 albums but actually hadn't made the top spot since, until now. This keeps Luke Combs to a second #2 album in a row, but at least he can boast charting higher than Nelly's "Sweat" & "Suit" combo. His entire back catalogue is still in the top 50 so one would guess that he'll probably win the war anyway. Fall Out Boy on the other hand, have never had a #1 album but tend to get themselves vaguely in the mix. Their closest effort was when "Save Rock and Roll" played second fiddle to a new Michael Buble album. I also feel bad for ARIA's social media team who needed to promote the debut of Matt Corby's 3rd album as impressive at #8, ignoring that his first two albums both landed higher, notably his debut hit the top spot. But given that he has the only Australian album in the entire top 50, I guess it's a lot harder to manage these heights 16 years removed from your Australian Idol runner up fame. I haven't listened to the album yet but it's got some good singles on it. On the topic of the oppressive nature of the global music scene, Pink Floyd are back with their woke album, and Depeche Mode have their first appearance in 6 years. Fictional band Daisy Jones & The Six manage to climb into the top 50 also. I can't be sure what to expect next week except that DMA'S will try to be the new only Australian album in the top 50, and hey, boygenius are really high on the UK midweeks so surely that'll splash over here as well.

Streaming Services Chart Discussion
It's definitely an interesting echo chamber effect. Usually (but is not limited to) a result of spending too long on any of the triumvirate of r/...heads subreddits that one equates a small community with the bigger picture. When of course we have a bigger picture and it's published every Friday afternoon. Absolute shock that DJ Khaled is more popular than JID etc. I literally compile a fake music chart every week with like half a dozen friends and so need to constantly remind myself that no, the average person on the street has not heard of Magdalena Bay or think's they're the bee's knees. Relevant anecdote about Rina that is extremely Australian in content so read at your own peril: Mind you her album charted reasonably well at least. But it's why the charts have so much value because they can settle that score/debate, at least to an extent. Yes, so and so artist is being helped by playlists, algorithms, label tomfoolery etc, but so is basically everyone to an extent. At the end of the day, a stream is a stream, a sale is a sale, and an artist can be very popular even if they don't have a contingent online talking about it, and vice versa.

I'm skeptical because radio is kinda firing on all cylinders and I don't see it sticking in the long run, compared to "Flowers" which I suspect will still be coasting on airplay this time next year.

Ed Sheeran - Eyes Closed
I think generally speaking, a critic is more likely to put someone onto an artist than off. So artists without any 'credibility' will still sell as they always will. The point is to be that person who sifts through everything so you don't have to, and so you'll have artists that owe their careers to that sort of word-of-mouth. There's plenty of stuff I've discovered due to it being covered on Pitchfork (Cymbals Eat Guitars were such a great band!), but conversely even back when all I did in my teens was listen to Muse, it never bothered me that they were hated there. I do think though it's a huge difference in the streaming age though because more often than not, people used to buy records that they only knew one or two songs (if that). Now people can much more readily listen to something before deciding to throw down any money (if they even do that). Chucking down $20 to see if the new hyped thing is really all that, is quite a commitment. Chucking on that Spellling album on Spotify for an hour because Anthony Fantano said it was great, is far less of one. All that being said though, it's not just Ed Sheeran. This is all reminding me that ~10 years ago there used to be this critic in the Sydney Morning Herald or something like that who earned a reputation as the guy who would write scathing 1 star reviews of music that clearly wasn't for him. Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Skrillex etc, paraded as a hero for taking these crappy pop artists down a peg but honestly the whole thing just seemed like a childish waste of space. Whether the new Sheeran record blows or not, I'd rather read/watch a review from someone who treats him as an artist, rather than just a punching bag to rattle off the last 2 years of zingers. Hitting easy targets is boring.
-
Ed Sheeran - Eyes Closed
I mean to be fair most people just use critics as a means to reciprocate things they already think, and act like petulant children* when they don't. Ed Sheeran is an easy target because it lets you turn into full schoolyard bully with no consequences. I doubt anyone is still waiting for the reviews to come in to deduce their own verdict. Music criticism still has a purpose as a means to spark discussion, but it's hardly the much-needed consumer guide it once was. *I don't keep track of these things but probably a lot of these people actually are children.

It does seem like PinkPantheress is not going to be the one to challenge it anymore though, as she's slipping back faster now. Actually if anything here is on the cards, it might be Morgan Wallen. It's hard to be certain because he just wrapped up some Australian shows which would suggest he could be trending back down, but as it stands, he's still moving on up and might be able to muscle ahead of the steadily weakening competition. He also gets a second top 50 hit this week with last year's "You Proof". Or I dunno, maybe Ed Sheeran sold a lot of physical copies here, I'm not at all privy to that sort of info until it happens. I just remember "Bad Habits" having an unremarkable start on streaming but debuting at #1 on the chart anyway. Taylor Swift has the top debut this week. I learnt this morning that saying nice things about Taylor Swift will earn you the ire of Taylor Swift fans. I suspect she could climb next week though. Calvin Harris climbs into the top 50 thanks to a massive help from Hot Hits Australia and also that funny algorithm thing, otherwise there's nothing to suggest to me that the song is much more popular than any other underperforming Calvin Harris single of late, interesting that. He's not alone anyhow though, because Meghan Trainor seems to have ridden that same algorithm to the top 50, but with Australian Idol over and the streaming also retreating hard this week, it might just be a one week thing. Then again Australia did make "Me Too" a #4 hit so you never know. J. Cole also returns to the top 50 with "No Role Modelz", roughly a year after he first made it. I have to highlight this though because the song has now spent 24 weeks in the top 50, getting no higher than #43. This week's Bubbling Under chart is actually stepping back up. I know that because I don't think Fred again.. was that far off the top 50 this week but he doesn't even make the cut for this. Luke Combs does, and I strongly suspect "5 Leaf Clover" will climb into the top 50 next week, alongside a couple other songs of his and/or Tracy Chapman's. Jimin doesn't quite make the top 50 this week but I wouldn't be surprised if he had a shot this coming week with "Like Crazy". I'm being crazy experimental with the album chart this week and adding another leading zero, just because most of the album chart entries are into their 3rd digit now and it makes it easier for me to type this up, and read it. Anyway, despite the streaming formula being somewhat against the idea of a 36 track album, Morgan Wallen's streaming has been so out of control that he can't help but climb up to #1 this week for the first time in his career. As a result, U2 land at #3 which might seem underwhelming but it is the highest peaking U2 album that starts with the words 'Songs Of'. Ocean Alley have a big re-entry thanks to a vinyl release, which manages to double the number of Australian albums in the top 50 this week. With Spacey Jane very close to slipping out, we'd be close to a net zero next week but at the very least Matt Corby should make an entrance. There's also an arrival for All Time Low, who usually end up in the top 20 but here land at #38. Next week I would think is Luke Combs' to take. Morgan Wallen could challenge him but I think their streaming is fairly level and Luke will have sales on his side. Lana Del Rey should also figure in somewhere, and maybe Depeche Mode, Fall Out Boy & BABYMETAL, who's to say?

Streaming Services Chart Discussion
To be honest as a neurodivergent person, I find whatever Big Hit is doing much more reprehensible. It's exploiting obsessive compulsive behaviour (which is more common for NDs) and fandom good will by shovelling out endless versions of everything they put out that they know will all get purchased. Reminds me a lot of the genuinely evil 'whale' concept in mobile gaming. (This also applies to the vinyl format business model).

Pre-2010 artists still relevant to today’s charts
I've been noticing this since around mid last year. I think between an aging streaming demographic, TikTok algorithms that don't produce audience retention, overweighted pure sales gimmicks that weaponise baked in fanbases, and a years long pandemic destroying the live music scene, it's incredibly difficult for new artists to make a significant mark. Genuinely I'm much more surprised to see a new artist break out with a hit than a 'shocking' comeback from major label artists like Meghan Trainor or Sam Smith.

It's a little hard to really judge the margin on Spotify because the original version of "Boy's a liar" fell out of the top 200 a little while ago but it is possible that this will be its last week at #1, as it seems to be falling slightly faster. Aside from "Last Night", most of the top songs at the moment are dropping but being replaced by nothing. The highest new peak on the chart is actually "ceilings" at #20 but since that's basically radio poison in this country, it may as well not be there. Also the album's really good, more people should listen to it. Miley Cyrus does get the top/only debut with "River" but it doesn't seem to be catching on just yet. That said if you're on the lookout for new hits, that Calvin Harris dealie should probably do the job. Last night it got slotted in at #2 on Hot Hits Australia so it could well vault into the top 20 soon. There's probably another song climbing up too but I suspect if I don't give it any attention, it should eventually go away. I was under the impression that Miley Cyrus getting #1 albums was a regular occurrence but now I see this is only her 3rd #1 album. It does mean that she can boast 3 decades of #1 albums if you're into those sort of stats. It helps this time around that she has no competition, as the only debut for the week! If not for U2 coming in next week, I think Morgan Wallen might have a chance to climb up to #1 as he's seeing some good streaming legs for several songs. Then again maybe he can still pull it off. We're also back to only having 1 Australian album in the top 50, but maybe Ed Sheeran & Harry Styles dropping back down the chart will create a buffer in that regard.

Streaming Services Chart Discussion
Seems like rather than just one, several 10/03 releases are getting big out of nowhere boosts (Miracle, Mother, Jaded). The former has plausible deniability on the UK Chart but based on every other global chart it looks a bit more sus, so maybe keep that in mind. In the mean time, Die For You (Remix) is collapsing even harder than last week, so I guess that's where all those streams are coming from.
