  1. A lot of it specifically is centred around Queensland and northern New South Wales (specifically Tamworth) which has a strong local scene. Speaking as someone who lives on the opposite side of the country, it's not really a big deal here. That said, "Last Night" may as well be a pop song (and I believe it was pushed to pop radio first in the US) so it's not that radical to see it breaking out. And yes, Australia is incredibly white.

You would think that the album release would buoy it again but it's actually been dropping faster than "Boy's a liar" on Spotify lately, so it keeps this race open again although I imagine the margin is still too strong on other platforms to change anything. Actually pretty much everything in the top 10 is on the way out presently with not much looking to slot itself in. Miley will probably debut in the top 20 with "River" next week. Morgan Wallen rises to a new peak off the album release but surprisingly doesn't score any further top 50 entries. As you can probably parse from the Bubbling Under chart, he has several not far off (+ "You Proof" is one of the highest but is too old for that chart). Harry Styles wrapped up his tour in the middle of this tracking week but mostly improves on last week's positions, while Ed Sheeran played his last show on Sunday this week and should see another good week (even though the show is in the lower population centre of Perth). If you perchance found yourself looking at this chart and thinking 'gosh, "Shivers" is a bit high, innit?', that's a fair assessment, because it got put back on Hot Hits Australia and quite high at that. Nonetheless its jump up to #10 does make the top 10 this week on average a year less old so it's impossible to say if this is helping freshen up the chart or not. Superstar Pride plummets down the chart due to the handicap of being unable to be streamed for most of the week, although I have to note that all things considered, it's a bit higher than I'd have thought. If nothing else it lends more credence to my theory that ARIA doubles up Friday streams for Thursday data or something dumb like that because it went from being way higher on Spotify last week to being a bit lower on Spotify compared to its ARIA position, very strange. Also speaking of Spotify oddities, it is quite possible that "Rhyme Dust" was getting that algorithm goodness last week but it actually declines on this week's corresponding chart. The highest Australian song on the chart this week keeps getting lower and next week we might only have two in the top 50. I'm also just going to note that "ceilings" climbed a lot and I'm very supportive of this so I don't have to change the sub-header. We've also nearly got a record low in new music in the top 50 as there are only 10 qualifying songs in this week. The only time it's been lower I believe was the week of the big Christmas boom when it dropped down to 8. ONEFOUR's Hot Hits Australia boost picks them up a bit but they're already collapsing again this week. Niall has a monster collapse now that people aren't being forced at gunpoint to listen to his music, but he may be able to stick the landing a little and hang around. On the album chart, Harry Styles is #1 again. Morgan Wallen debuts at #2 yet again, in case you were wondering, his last album missed the top spot to Barry Gibb, but is still in the top 50 to this day so he's won the long term battle I suppose. The album chart actually does have some Australian music again as the next highest debut comes from Ruel, whose big breakthrough as a young wunderkind was so long ago that maybe he's not a notably young wunderkind anymore! This is his first proper studio album although he had quite a bit of success with his 2019 EP that also peaked at #3 on the album chart. Speaking of #3, NCT 127 got there last year with the 4th album, and this re-package gets them to #13. Teenage Dads had a bit of a breakthrough last year and made the Hottest 100 for the first time with their song "Teddy". It appears on their new EP which is only 6 tracks which is just long enough to be included here. Also debuting this week is Jen Cloher who made the top 5 back in 2017 and you might know them for being romantically linked with Courtney Barnett at that time although I don't think they are anymore. Macklemore sneaks into the top 50 which is quite a drop off for him position-wise but as we know, the album chart has a tendency to exaggerate this gap. In any case, his last album had a #2 hit on it and this does not.
  3. To be fair, half of Dua Lipa's top 10 hits in the past 4 years have samples & interpolations and most people seem to like those. I think it's more if you don't like/don't want to like an artist, one is more likely to dismiss anything like that which pivots to success because 'how dare people fall for this trickery?!' (as well as being an easy scapegoat for 'why this is bad') when really it's a matter of taste.
  4. I've been awaiting to see what would happen this week but with the feeling of no strong expectation for her to do anything substantial. The kinds of artists who tend to have big showings with their albums are the ones who *always* do (Ye had 3 top 20 hits from his gospel album!) or new artists that have a lot of hype behind them (eg Olivia, Billie). Miley doesn't really fit into either camp. She does well on pure sales but I don't know how many people who've never listened to a Miley Cyrus album on release are gonna start just because they like "Flowers", most have decided where they stand long ago.
  5. And all of a sudden after consistently gaining 120K+ for an entire week it's now lost streams compared to a week ago, exactly on time. Knew it  Not sure if there's a new beneficiary yet.

  7. Dunno if anyone else has seen it but I've been noticing an artist I'd never heard of vaulting up a lot of global artist charts lately (this is the UK one): They're difficult to Google and all I can seem to figure out is that they're Dutch and they dropped a 50+ track album of very standard dance remakes of popular songs, with a big following on YouTube & TikTok, but it all seems so bafflingly uneventful for something that seems to be rocketing up the charts.
  8. Didn't see anyone mention it but "PAINTING PICTURES" got greyed out a couple days ago and vanished from every Spotify chart.
  9. Unless there's some sales being shipped in this week it's not a chance. Harry's going to annihilate on streams again even if it's starting to wane.
  10. Max Martin, Shellback & Fred again.. all worked with him before on "I Don't Care", "Beautiful People", "Take Me Back To London" and "Remember The Name" lol post-sniped by less than a minute

I don't think I've ever really written at length on this topic so I hope you can forgive me using this thread as my soap box. (If you're just here to read about the new chart, I recommend skipping the next 5 paragraphs x) I've always marched to the beat of my own drum to an extent. I had a lot in common with what was well liked in the alternative scene for ages but would also run down my own rabbit holes as we all do. Ever since around 2018 this has gone completely off the rails. There's a certain expectation when you hear that someone likes indie music. It's more niche than pop music, but it still has the same sort of conglomeration around the more universally agreed upon artists. Be that RYMcore, P4Kcore, AOTYcore or whatever. I don't know if it's considered cooler to listen to BC,NR or instead something lesser known, opinions probably vary. In any case there's an inherent 'coolness' that's adopted which leads to perceptions of superiority. I reject that superiority because the music I listen to doesn't really fall into either camp. We're more talking about indie music that's obscure by way of it probably getting heard and passed up, or just not heard at all and if it was, it wouldn't get much interest either because it's not what people are interested in, or if it is, people are so territorial about these things that they'll dismiss it as a weaker facsimile of something that is approved. Also I listen to a lot of Australian music and that almost always gets a bad wrap online because there are far less of us to stick up for it and try to assert it into popular discourse. Which is to say I'm long beyond the expectation that music I listen to will make any discernable impact. I discovered Lizzy's music properly a little over a year ago. Actually I suspect that if not for poorly counted Thursday data, she would have made the ARIA top 50 last week and it would have been published on the exact one year anniversary of when I first listened to "reckless driving", a song I might have skipped over if not for a really compelling bridge and outro that reminded me a lot of "I Know The End", my favourite Phoebe song. I grew to like it a lot and it's my most listened to song of the last roughly 5 years. About a month after it came out, I listened to the album and really took to it immediately, helped by songs like "erase me" and "doomsday" that operated on unexpected but really engaging dynamics. It became apparent quickly that she operated on a basis of chucking in surprise twists and turns in her songs, whether it's the dramatic shifts in songs like "firearm" or "hate to be lame", or when you get those lyrical moments in "ceilings" or "chemtrails" that make you realise what the song's really been about the whole time. Maybe it sounds gimmicky written out like that but it just works on a sonic level and I latched onto her writing style really strongly. I wish I could tell you what I thought about "ceilings" initially but I think with the title that doesn't stick out, it's not one that I really could remember looking at the tracklist. I did however come to notice down the track around July that it was actually on the top of her Spotify top 10 which I might have initially dismissed as it being chill playlist fodder (let's be honest, it is), but it did also seem to be a fan favourite so I went back to it, and it clicked so hard into place. I still prefer "reckless driving" but "ceilings" had a hold on me and I became fascinated at its slow burn popularity, where I think I noticed around August that both it and the album were getting more plays on last.fm than the week the album actually came out. In September I started tracking its daily stats on Spotify because I was curious to see if it was catching up to "hate to be lame", at the time the most streamed song on the album, back when the songs were on 5.5 & 10 million streams respectively. The upward trend continued and the rest as you can figure is history. This is all just to say that it has been a very long time since I last had something to root for in the charts like this. Even when the possibility arrives, I'm used to getting screwed over, like how BENEE (back when she was just called Bene) was poised to crack the top 50 with "Soaked", my second favourite song of 2018, only for dumb beaurocracy to get in the way which meant that it never charted at all. My other favourite top 50 hit of recent times is "XO TOUR Llif3" which did chart but got so royally screwed over by a logistic error midway into its chart run that it soured the excitement. Never before has a song hit the ARIA top 50 a full 7 months after it topped my own personal charts so I am absolutely going to indulge in every moment of this. She's quite low at the moment in this particularly hectic chart but I'm expecting some strong progress in the coming weeks. Anyway as for this week's chart, "Flowers" is #1 for a 7th week. The 8th week is looking a bit more up in the air. She's down to effectively #3 on Spotify but PinkPantheress significantly lacks sales still and The Weeknd's suspiciously high streams on Spotify are not at all being reciprocated on Apple (and his sales aren't great either). For the time being though, The Weeknd once again tacks Ariana Grande onto an old song and climbs up to #3. The funniest aspect of this for me is because on the surface, it makes it look like "As It Was" has stalled out despite having one of the biggest climbs for his catalogue this week. He just wrapped up his Australian tour this week but that still carries well into the next tracking week so expect his songs to remain very high again. It's hard to believe that Ed Sheeran is once again having one of the most successful Australian tours of all time and he's still being relatively overshadowed, as I suspect Harry Styles is singlehandedly keeping "Shape Of You", "Celestial" and maybe "Thinking Out Loud" out of the top 50. Outside of that, it's still a fairly busy week with some big debuts. Superstar Pride has the highest at #20, although he's retreated back down quite a bit so he might not get any higher. That's almost certainly also true of Niall Horan who as you might suspect, had a terrific second week out of nowhere but next week looks to Sabrina Carpenter his way out of here. If not for my loonery I would say the most peculiar debut this week comes from MK & Dom Dolla. I don't know if this is surprising or not but MK has actually never charted before in Australia, apart from me just now learning that he contributed to a couple of Pitbull's hits, but nothing like "Look Right Through" or "17" has made any real impression over here. Dom Dolla also hasn't charted but has made a name for himself, getting roughly 1 Hottest 100 entry per year in recent times, his most recent, "Miracle Maker", is an absolute banger. Also Q-Tip is sampled on the song which just goes to show that he's had an extremely long spanning era of hitmaking. In this house we stan A Tribe Called Quest. "Rhyme Dust" actually debuted at #13 on Spotify which I have to assert is extremely unusual in Australia where hardly anything ever impacts out the gate on New Music Friday. Hot Hits Australia has updated about 3 times since the song has come out and still not added it which is also making its longevity look pretty dicey, despite the fact that it's free Aussie quota. Morgan Wallen also climbs into the top 10, getting just a little bit higher than Sam Hunt did with "Body Like A Back Road". He's hard pressed to have the biggest modern pop country crossover hit because technically "Meant To Be" got to #2 and "One Too Many" got to #6, but it's fairly notable. Oddly enough though it doesn't look certain that he'll be able to get another top 50 entry next week although "Ain't That Some" and "You Proof" could sneak in, so it's interesting to see just how focused the attention is on the one song. Notable on the Bubbling aspects this week, ONEFOUR enter with their best performing new single in a fair while, which actually has gotten the Hot Hits Australia tick of approval for some reason, while SZA climbs up with "Low", actually the first time it's ever been on this chart because it's never done better than 4th place for SZA until now. The album chart caught me off guard admittedly but I guess I underestimated just how much Harry Styles' streams have been adding up. He's back at #1 for the first time in many months, blocking Gorillaz who score their highest charting album in over a decade. 2010's "Plastic Beach" is to date their only #1 album as "Demon Days" lost out to System of a Down back in the day. Furthermore, it's pretty unheard of but P!nk is down to #3 already on week 2. I'd assume everyone's making way for Morgan Wallen next week but with limited physical availability and streaming that is being well outpaced by Harry Styles, he could be set for another #2 peak. Also debuting in the top 10 we've got an Australian icon in Tim Rogers, who you should know as the lead singer of You Am I who you'd do yourself a favour to listen to because they're one of the best bands of the '90s. He's charted many solo albums over the years but this is the first time he's made the top 10. He previously collaborated with The Twin Set back in 1999 and peaked at #14, which is also the only solo album of his that lasted more than a week in the top 50. Adam Lambert also makes the top 10, keeping up his perfect record as this is his 5th time in the echelon. For the past couple of weeks, there's only been one Australian album in the top 50 but refreshingly we've got a few this week. Also debuting is Kingswood, making the top 20 for the 4th time. It's been a while since I listened to them and I think they've changed up their sound a bit but they used to be a remarkable dead ringer for Queens of the Stone Age. On the more modern end of the spectrum, we've got The Terrys, who made the Hottest 100 in 2021 with their biggest hit "Our Paradise". Every other song I've heard of theirs sounds like a re-creation of that song, but it is a good one so I don't blame them. We've also got Gracie Abrams charting for the first time. Ed Sheeran joins Harry Styles in having his entire studio album catalogue on the chart again.
  12. Is it not impossible that the autoplay magic has shifted from Niall to The Weeknd? It's less noticeable when the song's already high up but just on raw numbers it kind of checks out. (Unless there's a more logical reason that the remix has increased by 3 million daily streams in 2 days globally)
  13. It might be by sheer coincidence, but I'm just taking the positions from the New Music Singles chart and starting from the ones that aren't in the top 50. I explained it in more detail on the 13/02/2023 chart post.

It's getting a little dicey as it's been usurped on Spotify but with a huge sales gap I'd rate it the favourite to be #1 again next week. Miguel does in fact match his best past chart peak with an even older song but otherwise there's not much else to note in the top 50 this week. Really this week is just a prelude to the fact that Harry Styles & Ed Sheeran are currently touring and both hit the major population centres in the past week, so while they're up a decent amount this week, steel yourself for next week's utter chaos. Also "Die For You" will probably jump into the top 5. There is however a bit of a clear out on the New Music chart (and I believe "10:35" and "Rich Flex" will both be out in the next 2 weeks), so now we're up to #14 being out of the top 50! Once again the highest actually bubbling under hit is likely not represented as I'd strongly suspect "ceilings" just missed the top 50 this week, but we do have actual non-top 50 hits courtesy of P!nk, Libanca & Niall Horan. The former two are almost definitely taking a dive next week but Niall will likely vault into the top 50, even if he magically stopped getting streams today which as we've learnt is not impossible. Welcome to Australia, P!nk is #1 obviously. This is her 6th consecutive #1 studio album + obviously her Greatest Hits went to #1 as well. The tale of the tape is usually a question of how many weeks she'll spend at #1 and you'd suspect Gorillaz and Harry Styles could provide slight challenges but it's hers to lose really. One of Skrillex's two new albums enters this week. He's had 5 top 50 albums although this is only the second of those that is actually a Skrillex album.

It's technically no longer #1 combined on Spotify but its very high sales will likely help maintain things for at least another week. That competition of course comes from "Boy's a liar" which vaults up to #3 this week despite being strangely low on Hot Hits Australia. The song is co-produced with Mura Masa who had a top 20 hit in 2017 with "Love$ick" so it's also now his highest charting song too. It's a bit of a clean out of the top 10 but with the arrival of "Sure Thing", one that makes the top 10 considerably older on average. It's Miguel's second ever top 10 hit after "#Beautiful" which got to #6 in 2013. Coi Leray also jumps into the top 10 at the expense of The Kid LAROI which is a hard sentence to explain to your parents. Luke Combs didn't make the top 50 with the last song he released but this time he does much better and lands in the top 30, but it looks to be shortlived until the album comes out. Though the tour is over, Post Malone actually has an uncharacteristic climb for "I Fall Apart" that brings it back into the top 50, one has to imagine the omnipotent Spotify top 50 effect got it over the line. Incidentally that does not apply to Linkin Park as they spent the entire week not in the Spotify top 50 but still manage to sneak in with "Lost". Also sneaking in, SZA's "Snooze", doing well for itself as it was only about the 11th highest SZA song when the album first came out. The New Music chart doesn't capture it but I have to imagine Fred again..'s "Jungle" was extremely close to making the top 50 this week (it's above "Rumble" on the dance chart) which would've been pretty wild. Paramore score their 3rd #1 album this week. It's kind of what they've been doing ever since "Brand New Eyes", although "After Laughter" made the foolhardy decision to be released on the same week as "Harry Styles". None of the singles have charted from the album but they have started getting played on triple j lately which is crazy character development from the late 2000s. Pierce The Veil first charted in 2016 and made #12. I had not noticed that they'd had an even longer gestation period than Paramore but they're back with their newest album giving them a first time top 10. In typical Australian fashion, waiting for the AU news cycle in response to the US news cycle means that Rihanna's Super Bowl hype peaked on like Wednesday, I'm actually not sure her songs were even acknowledged on the ARIA Chart but she does have two albums returning. We're also seeing the prelude to Harry Styles & Ed Sheeran who are both on opposite sides of the country right now. That'll certainly pick up again next week. They won't go back to #1 on the albums chart though because there's a new P!nk album out now as I imagine you were aware.
  18. Too true! So often the rhetoric is so poorly considered that it feels like a PSYOP to tarnish the left's reputation. When you're looking out for the minority you can't draw such a stark line in the sand because at the end of the day, the 'them' is so much larger than the 'us'. Empathy comes from seeing oneself in another, not from belittling people in the odd expectation that it'll somehow make them agree with you in order to get their approval. Who here has ever gotten into a band or artist because they saw someone trashing someone you liked for being inferior to this better, more obscure artist? Furthermore, even from a utilitarian stand point, boycotting wizard game or anything to the effect is honestly counter-intuitive. Most of us who don't like JKR already weren't going to play it even if she weren't what she is now, so it's impossible for me to take away a sale that never was going to exist*. On the other hand, the only time this sort of thing is effective is incidentally when it's targeting the work of marginalised folk who either slip up, are perceived to slip up, or associate with someone who did, since they're the ones with the proactive audience. From that it's hard to want to associate with anyone who's willing to toss you aside forever for the power trip of a witch hunt. Self-cannibalisation at its finest. *That being said here is a donation link for Mermaids UK for no reason in particular.

Mid last year ARIA started publishing a New Music chart, possibly to satiate the anger around the slow moving chart but if anything making people angrier because it strengthens the idea that ARIA will not change the rules any time soon. In any case, for much of last year, this top 20 chart never actually got lower than the ARIA top 50, so you actually couldn't gleam much info out of it, but lately that isn't the case, so I thought I would highlight the songs that feature on it that are below the top 50, kind of like a Bubbling Under chart but in reality most of them are gonna be songs that already hit the top 50 in the past. The way the chart works is that artists are limited to 3 entries (although Metro Boomin' somehow had 4 late last year), and the songs have to have a release date on ARIA's archive within the last 4 months, which usually means 17 weeks max on this chart, but sometimes songs can get kicked off after 16 weeks. This means that any particularly old song that takes off may be fresh to the chart but not actually on the New Music Chart, so it'll probably never feel like the start of a movie I've seen before. Although in saying that "Sunroof" for some reason got a street date that actually came after when the song hit the Spotify top 200 here, so chaos rules, but I think it's accurate this week at least. We're also close to seeing "Anti-Hero", "Made You Look", "10:35", "Rich Flex", "Just Wanna Rock" and "Delilah (pull me out of this)" retired from the chart so there could be a lot of low charting songs sucked into it in the coming weeks. "Flowers" is still way ahead but a lesser way ahead than before. In a move that surely pleases people who dislike chart stagnation, "Unholy" has a belated rebound back to #3, unseating the newer "Escapism." but at least it's not the same top 3. The Kid LAROI jumps to #6 to score his 6th top 10 hit, if you can name the 6th highest of those, you'd be excellent at music trivia. I regret to say "Players" has outpeaked "The Message" although I'll inhale the copium and choose to believe that there was limited distribution and/or airplay for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in the early '80s but then at the same time I'm surprised a rap song charted that high at the time. There are a lot of debuts this week! The highest comes from PinkPantheress who has never charted here before I believe outside of not being credited on "Obsessed With You", but she looks poised to vault into the top 10 next week. Morgan Wallen is also in the top 50 for the first time ever, I think he made the top 100 with "Broadway Girls" but this is his first solo outing. I'm expecting a lot of enraged discourse and album tracks in the top 50 in the coming months and am hoping to restrain myself from joining in. For the record I believe in forgiveness and self-reflection/improvement. P!nk is back in the top 50 for the first time in nearly 2 years. Usually lately her songs have been managing a week in the top 100 at most. As you probably know, "TRUSTFALL"'s streaming success is dubious at best but I will note an interesting spin on things as it actually took an extra 2 days before the song collapsed on Spotify here compared to most other countries. Sabrina Carpenter was unanimously on the same day everywhere so I find this an interesting spin, although it did coincide with a P!nk national tour announcement, which if you know anything about Australia is a big deal, so maybe that weathered it for a little bit. In any case, the song may well survive in the top 50 next week as it hasn't fallen particularly far yet on Spotify. Speaking of big Australian tours, I have to say that Fred again.. is so hot right now. His tour with Laneway and associated sideshows that have become an internet meme, in addition to a stellar performance in triple j's Hottest 100 last month has his songs littered everywhere on the Spotify chart. "Delilah (pull me out of this)" is doing the best and may well challenge for a top 20 position if it can hold up well throughout the week (and "Jungle" is close to the top 50 too which is interesting because none of these songs charted this high anywhere else). For now though he gets his second credited top 50 hit. Sam Smith's not here to make friends which is why they're not credited on the song, and NewJeans manage to sneak onto the chart after weeks of hovering below with two of their songs. Oh and the UK has infected us with the green green grass, I'm not sure what the cure is but it might be interesting to know that it's only George Ezra's 4th top 50 hit, he hasn't charted since "Shotgun" became a huge #1 smash. Also if you like maths, all of his previous chart peaks multiply together to this current peak of #50. As last week may have helped signify, Taylor Swift returns to #1. Shania Twain misses the chance to have #1 albums spanning 4 decades as she lands at #5, having hit #1 with every album since "Come On Over". The chart continues to be even more covered with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Post Malone albums, while Spacey Jane have the only Australian album in the top 50 this week.
  23. There's definitely a trend in general where Friday is strong for fresh, just dropped new releases, and then the weekend is more likely to see established hits of the past, party playlists etc. Monday is a good day for anything that's sort of new too. Source: have been tracking "ceilings" streams almost every day for the past 5 months
  24. The whole thing reminds me a bit of "drivers license" so I made a graph of their Spotify performance, up to Olivia's last week at #1 I reckon long running #1's in the streaming era still thrive on the discovery element but in cases like this where they start off so strongly, that discovery just can't keep up. It's possible "Flowers" could rebound from this, but there's precedent for this to 'only' be the 3rd biggest hit of the year.
  25. I'm still skeptical of it being payola and not just a weird algorithm quirk. Like, the whole point of astroturfing is for it to not be obvious so I can't say this is really doing the trick. But either way from that perspective I'm not convinced of the long term plan. If the whole point is to gain leverage to convince Spotify to add songs to their big playlists, I can't imagine they're too keen on it (and the way "Nonsense" has been shoved down a lot of those playlists since seems to imply this isn't something with long term prospects, unless that one is a failed experiment). In any case, almost everything owes its long term success to playlists and algorithms which can go away shockingly fast if Spotify decides they don't like you anymore. Everyone has to play the game even if some are better at hiding it than others.
