New Year's Eve lingers strongly on this particular tracking week, to the extent that it probably decided the #1 single this week! I have to believe that "Kill Bill" performed best on six of the seven tracking days, but "Unholy" was among various songs that vaulted strongly on December 31st and that's enough to get it back to #1. "I'm Good (Blue)" was actually back to #1 on Spotify on that day, while Eliza Rose, LF System, "Cold Heart" and "Levitating" among others had significant boosts then. RAYE scores her first ever top 10 single ("You Don't Know Me" got to #12). Between this, "golden hour" and the imminent arrival of "ceilings" to a Spotify chart near you, it's been a good time for songs I like belatedly becoming hits. One to watch next week is "Until I Found You" which is soaring up next week. Tiësto also arrives in the top 50 this week and looks to stick the landing and keep climbing next week. It is a particularly drab time for Australian music as we only have two in the top 50 (and only two compilations in the albums chart!), I have to highlight that the big new hope being plugged on Hot Hits Australia is "You Were Right", a RÜFÜS DU SOL hit from back in 2015 when they were still called RÜFÜS. It's #2 on the playlist for no explainable reason but it's also probably getting pretty close to the ARIA top 50 so maybe it'll work?? "Midnights" keeps racking up weeks at #1, it's now up to 9. SZA is currently stuck at #2 on both charts, and though I strongly suspect it won't be the case next week, I think she has the second most #2's across both charts without a #1 to her name, behind Radiohead's 6 (or if you will, Thom Yorke's 7), SZA has three #2 singles and one #2 album. Otherwise this week's chart can be seen as a preview for the 2023 EOY albums chart, because I believe 47/50 of last year's equivalent chart made the cut, and I think there's a case to be made for basically every album on this week's chart to pull it off too.
  6. Depends on how you spin it. "Certified Lover Boy" still made the Billboard Year End top 10 2 years in a row. "Her Loss" was released on the first week of the new Billboard year so it was literally impossible for it to make the cut for 2022, but I have to imagine it's a strong top 3 contender already for 2023. "Honestly, Nevermind" is an underperformer but it's not exactly made for his usual demographics so it's not surprising. In any case, across those 3 albums, a lot of people were listening to Drake in 2022 which tends to be more viable than having a slightly more successful album every few years. Can't let people forget you if you're never gone for long
  7. 10/10 would block Jacob's murder attempts again.

  9. It also made the top 50 in 2019 & 2021 (2020 was an unfavourable tracking week, but was possibly its best performance) and it's been making the Spotify top 100 every year since 2015, so I'd say it's established Christmas canon here.
  10. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if they're all still in the top 20. Ed Sheeran's Australian tour starts in a couple of months and that might be enough to carry his momentum for the rest of the year.

Tyler, The Creator - Call Me If You Get Lost 97. SZA - Ctrl 98. Juice WRLD - Goodbye & Good Riddance 99. Amy Winehouse - Back To Black 100. Rüfüs Du Sol - Surrender As always, I must clarify that this chart is made by adding up all the sales on each individual week covered in 2022, there are some fiddly things with the December/January cut off but it's not that important. It's mostly just to say that if ARIA were late on catching a song onto the chart, then they will not rectify this for prior weeks. Notably "Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood could not catch up in time because half of its points are missing, and "Riptide" by Vance Joy should probably be in the top 50 of this list but ARIA still aren't counting it. So the charts themselves are to blame for there only being 10 Australian songs in this list. It also seems that the previous expectation that the chart could possibly be filled with a solid 90ish new hits for the year will never be reached again, as the main promotional outlets struggle to find much more than 1 new hit a week. Incidentally join me as I count down the top 10 songs that are only here because of Hot Hits Australia's aggressive playlisting: 10. Luke Combs - The Kind of Love We Make 9. Coldplay & BTS - My Universe 8. WILLOW - Wait A Minute 7. Tiësto & Ava Max - The Motto 6. Tate McRae - She's All I Wanna Be 5. Rüfüs Du Sol - On My Knees 4. Charlie Puth - Light Switch 3. Elley Duhé - Middle Of The Night 2. SUPER-Hi & Neeka - Following The Sun 1. Flume Feat. May-A - Say Nothing As for the albums chart, I also must remind you that unlike Billboard and the OCC, ARIA's rule for stream distribution goes down to the label entirely. It is not disclosed anywhere and we outsiders can only speculate the nature of what's going on. As a result, there are plentiful compilations in this list, but not all the compilations you might expect, and sometimes not necessarily the one that makes the most sense. Unless you think that more and more people every year flock to hear Coldplay's live in Argentina album. There's also very little in the way of new music on this list. By my count, there are 18 albums released in 2022, and three of them are compilations that derive their activity from streams of older material. We can't be sure that XXXTENTACION fans are even aware that "Look At Me: The Album" exists. In this context, it makes The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar look pretty good, with their 'underperforming' new albums ending up the 3rd & 4th biggest albums from 2022. Taylor Swift also I suspect just barely overtook Harry Styles at the last moment to take the top spot here with her very recent album. No Christmas music makes the cut though because they just can't accumulate the points fast enough. This makes sense when you consider what the Australian Charts look like next to the UK Charts, and then remember that Australia *doesn't* have ACR.

Maybe then we'll see a changing of the guard because the big news is that seemingly Brenda Lee's streams have been cleaned up. Every year she gets undercounted because the song's streams are split between two different recordings, but in actuality, she gets higher streaming numbers than Mariah Carey on Spotify when you put them together (though she's a bit behind on Apple). She's also aided by a generally American trend for this year's Christmas affairs, where a lot of the Britons and Paul Kelly lag behind a bit this time, although The Pogues do get a new peak. Nat King Cole is the big winner for getting two new entries in the top 50, as well as anyone who wants a particularly holly jolly Christmas, with Michael Buble & Burl Ives both having massive new peaks for that song. Watch the space next week for a big climb for RAYE & 070 Shake who are #2 combined on Spotify yesterday. Tiesto & Tate McRae have also been highly blessed by the Hot Hits Australia gods, so now are looking at making a big impression next week.
  13. The closest song that's making any significant progress is "As It Was", but at the current rate (which it won't maintain) it'll still take about 2 years to get there. No chart company can convince me that this is actually an R&B song

Kendrick Lamar 50 51 206 23 GOOD KID, M.A.A.D. CITY Kendrick Lamar In what must have been an extremely close battle, Mariah Carey gets to #1 for the 5th year in a row. It's also her 5th week at #1 as she has previously only spent a week at #1 each year, but looks to manage 3 this year. This comes with a caveat in that I'm almost certain she should've been #1 for 2 weeks last year but as ARIA notes in their code of practice, Thursday streams from certain DSPs are estimated...perhaps not very well in these seasonal times. I was mistakenly under the impression that the two versions of "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" were finally combined on Spotify but then I spotted them both charting alongside each other, which had Brenda slightly higher than Mariah on Spotify recently, while still a long way away on Apple. I'm not saying Brenda Lee should be #1 but I do think she's still being undercounted. Anyway otherwise this is SZA's week. She's making a decent claim for the #1 spot if she can maintain her hold in a few weeks, for now she's at #5. Anyway if you want a reason to get really mad at the clunky process of songs being included in the ARIA Chart, look at how RAYE & 070 Shake are #22 this week. This week's New Music chart had a fresh debut for "Escapism - Sped Up Version" which means that it's roughly around the top 100, but also wasn't being tracked at all last week. My interpretation on this is that whoever is handling the song's promotion over here noticed that the version was gaining traction a couple of weeks ago, and so they submitted it for consideration by ARIA. This process has to be done before the tracking week starts so it essentially can take 2 weeks. ARIA seemingly just accepted it as an invitation to include it separately which is probably the result of RAYE being on an independent label that didn't fully grasp the due process that major labels are used to. ARIA tends to screw over independent artists the most which is why Tyga's "Taste" and BENEE's "Soaked" among others never charted here. We'll see if this changes over the coming weeks I suppose (since otherwise the song would be in the top 10) but it is worth noting that in the download era, we'd sometimes see stuff like this, where remixes of big hit songs charted separately to the original, often at the same time. This basically never happens now so it's hard to think of it being intentional. Incidentally reaching the top 50 this week is "Until I Found You", which has been hovering around for months but is buoyed by the sudden burst in popularity of the Em Beihold version. Funnily enough, ARIA has been crediting this version for the entire time it's been charting, but now it is the one that's getting the lion's share of the streams. Sadly it seems Australian Frog Calls weren't able to hold on enough to even climb this week. SZA also misses out on the top spot but is charting higher than ever before on the album chart. The only other entry this week is the self-titled album of Coterie, a band that both Australia and New Zealand claim as their own, but it's only in New Zealand that they have managed to actually have crossover hits, because people over there actually know how to promote local product without just waiting for them to take off on TikTok by accident.
  18. I guess I just assumed they already counted? A good thing though, I don't think making the chart more interesting should be a reason to exclude data.

On the other hand, "Unholy"'s hold on the top is tenuous, as we could see Mariah Carey returning to #1 next week, and I must note that SZA has quickly vaulted to #1 on Spotify which could prove her a contender if she keeps this momentum up. Then again we could just see something similar to Metro Boomin from this week, who came within an inch of the top spot on Spotify, but has now receded a little bit and manages a #8 debut. This is his first credited top 10 entry and also narrowly The Weeknd's highest chart entry for this year. On the Christmas front, I have always been suspicious that the stats for Brenda Lee were not completely accurate, which was remedied last year but maybe even more so this year as she's providing a serious challenge to Michael Buble for the bronze medal, something that could well translate on the ARIA Chart with the 02/01/2023 tracking week. She's actually really close to Wham! on Spotify but miles behind on Apple so that's probably not going to change any time soon. Metro Boomin has various debuts scattered across the chart which has amusingly (for me) resulted in some strange 3 track rule dodging on ARIA's New Music Singles chart where he has 4 entries there. Also it's taken a month and a half but everyone's finally realised how good "Escapism." is. RAYE has had multiple top 50 hits since 2016 attached to numerous EDM bros but this is of course her first outing at the front of the crediting list. It's also technically 070 Shake's first entry as she wasn't credited on her 2018 Kid Cudi collaboration "Ghost Town". I'm also raising a suspicious eye-brow over this chart position as I suspect it's not getting the streams from the Sped Up version counted (currently #4 combined on Spotify), but with how messy Christmas charts are and how rapidly the song was vaulting up, I'm not going to stake full confidence in this just yet. "Dreams" is still always just hovering around just below the top 50 but Christine McVie's passing sees it boosted back into the top 50 for the first time in a few months. Last year Paul Kelly debuted at #2 with his Christmas album. This is perhaps understandable as it was released on the same week as Adele's "30". Paul has the last laugh perhaps though as the album was just re-issued and returns to a new peak of #1. It's his 4th #1 album. Despite being an Australian icon for longer than I've been alive, he's only started racking up #1's since 2017. Speaking of Australian icons, you might also remember last year seeing a high charting album of Australian Bird Calls. They didn't quite get to #1 but maybe we'll have better luck this time around as Australian Frog Calls debuts at #3, with ARIA's midweeks suggesting they could climb up next week. Similarly to last year, the proceeds of this album go towards frog research & conservation. Metro Boomin has the most streamed album of the week and lands a debut at #5, not a personal peak for him as his 21 Savage collaboration in 2020 got to #4. Lower down we have debuts for BTS's RM, and a third top 30 solo peak for Adalita, best known as the frontwoman for Magic Dirt. RÜFÜS DU SOL's recent tour brings them back into the top 50 and I will also note if it ever feels like albums never leave the chart sometimes, that Ed Sheeran's "÷" is at a new lowest ever position this week.

I have to assume that "Anti-Hero" is improving on Apple because Spotify suggests traction in the opposite way. Hard to say what'll happen next week because "Unholy" is only very slowly growing the gap. I don't know if I have anything interesting to note about Christmas music at the moment except that they are a little bit higher than before. Lil Uzi Vert is the latest winner of the strange hip-hop pick for Hot Hits Australia that they'll probably dump in less than a month, but for now he has his 3rd top 40 hit. There's also a notable return for Eminem's "Mockingbird". It's another week and it's another Jimmy Barnes #1 album. He now has 15 which if you go beyond the tenure of the ARIA Charts, is more than The Beatles ever had. I don't have much else to say this week but The Seekers have a new compilation in the top 10, The Smith Street Band have a stilted format release and thus misleading peak for their new album, while The Cure & Thelma Plum have vinyl rebounds, and Kendrick Lamar returns with his Australian tour going on at the moment.
