Mind you we can't go without mentioning that Australia's 1000th #1 single was Baauer's "Harlem Shake" which he had more than a hand in manifesting. However it may be his only week at #1 as the fervour is fading out quickly as radio & playlists seem to be favouring Kate Bush over him, so she might be able to return to #1 next week. Speaking about funny playlist decisions, let's talk about Drake. As you know, the moment his new album dropped, "Falling Back" was giving prime position right away, and as you also might know, that has proven an extremely poor aging decision. But the ARIA Charts always have to find a way to one-up themselves and so despite being the arguable official '''single''' of the album, it has not been allowed to enter the chart, where I suspect it might have snuck a top 10 peak. Not since Tyga's "Taste" has a song this high up on the chart been missing. Instead we get what one might argue are the worthwhile takeaways from the project, namely "Jimmy Cooks", "Sticky" & "Massive". The latter has since replaced "Falling Back" in playlisting and is holding up decently. My theory for what has happened here is that Drake's omissions have a 1:1 match with regards to his digital sales performance. The 3 songs that made the chart are the ones that did enough for a top 100 digital rank (which "Falling Back" was just shy of). This is the same pattern I've noticed with some previous Drake releases and most recently, Post Malone's album. So basically this chart decision has possibly been left in the hands of a very small number of people who still purchase music. Elsewhere, Luke Combs gets his 3rd top 50 hit which looks to climb into the top 20 next week with his album out. Beyonce manages to get a midweek release to debut, which she wasn't able to manage in New Zealand. She should climb into the top 10 next week although doesn't look like it's getting very sticky there. Australia is a very white country. Which is to say that the new #1 this week is a re-packaging of an album from 1991, when Jimmy Barnes did a bunch of R&B and soul covers and sold them to a bunch of people who would otherwise probably not buy albums from those respective artists. In fairness though, this new version's track 1 is a cover of Sam Cooke's "Soothe Me" with a guest appearance by Sam Moore from Sam & Dave. The original version of this album also went to #1 but this counts as a new entry so it's now Jimmy Barnes' 14th #1 album, extending his already distinct record for most #1 albums of any artist. As is tradition every time he has a new album in the chart, I must remind you that yes, this is the Jimmy Barnes who is the cowboy in the clouds screaming 'AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH' in the funny internet meme. As a result, Drake can't quite nab the #1 spot which is his first time missing out with a studio album since "Views", his first #1. Elsewhere in the top 10 we keep up with the extreme Australian-ness as we have the first solo album of Chris Cheney, from The Living End, who incidentally has collaborated with Jimmy Barnes multiple times. The Living End have thus far released 8 albums and all of them have reached the top 10. Calum Scott however is not able to repeat his trick, just missing the top 10 after his last album went to #5. Foals also continue their slight downward slide, having their first ever top 50 entry being a #1 debut for "Holy Fire" in 2013, this time they arrive at #13 which is a touch lower than the #11 & #10 peaks of their two parts album. As is true Radiohead fashion, The Smile make good with a physical release and score a new peak. Next week one would surely put their money on Luke Combs for the #1 debut, but Spacey Jane & Chris Brown will likely contest just below, with Jack Johnson figuring in somewhere as well.

2022 Australian Chart Thread
The timeline is a bit fuzzy in my head but I think he first appeared on the chart in 2018 (like a month or so after the song peaked, alas), and suddenly became Australian a year later in 2019. ("SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK" makes the cut for the 2020 AU Singles End Of Year chart but not 2019, when it didn't have enough time to move units [since ARIA would never go back to fix his omission from the AU Chart for the start of the year]). If memory serves correctly he hasn't yet been nominated for an ARIA Award but "Glimpse Of Us" should be selling enough to get auto-nominated for Song Of The Year (which works similarly to the BRIT Awards one). I seem to recall his Wikipedia page used to say he was Japanese-Australian, which I think at the end of the day is still somewhat true? Brian McFadden & Kimbra used to get nominated for Australian awards simply because they lived here at the time

She doesn't look like matching the 3 week reign of "Wuthering Heights" however as Joji is coming in hard for next week's chart. He's previously hit the top 50 with "Run" and "Sanctuary" but this instantly becomes his highest chart entry and has a massive lead on Spotify. Fun ARIA moment is that "SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK" never quite made the top 100 chart because ARIA weren't counting it initially, and they took even longer to decide that Joji is Australian. Tangentially though it looks like it might finally chart soon. For a more modern (well technically not) ARIA moment, it is quite possible that "Sweater Weather" should be in the top 50 for the first time this week, alas our charts are dumb. What we do get this week is a BTS debut though one that looks to quickly fizzle out. OneRepublic also jolt up the chart because although they've been feeling it since 1966, they only just got put on Hot Hits Australia last week. This is also true of "Sunroof" which enters this week. It took a while for Taylor Swift's "Don't Blame Me" to get acknowledged on the chart but now it's a top 50 hit. BTS score their 3rd #1 album this week. It also sounds nice to phrase it that Vance Joy has his 3rd top 3 album which is what ARIA tweeted although his first two albums debuted at #1. King Gizz's quest to maybe one day get a #1 album continues as a physical release brings "Omnium Gatherum" to a top 5 peak. George Ezra scores his 3rd top 10 album though with his lowest peak yet, though to be fair he hasn't had a major hit this time around ("Anyone For You" got a little bit of airplay though). Motionless In White get a slight new high of #14. Carrie Underwood otherwise is a little far away from her usual #4 peaking fashion. SZA's anniversary re-release of "Ctrl" gets it a slight new peak (it debuted at #40, and reached #39 last year).

Best Album This Year so far
Very fond of Beach House & Lizzy McAlpine this year.

ACR alternative suggestions
You're right. Spotify's own daily charts apply a cap (assumedly 10 plays) vs. Spotify's totals you see on artist pages or on a song/album page which do not. You tend to notice a big disparity with new BTS singles with the chart providing a much lower than advertised amount.

How Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill became a No.1 contender
It's a curious statement to say that ACR exists partly because the OCC can't split organic (whatever that means) & playlist streams, when by and large I'd argue playlist streams actually help cycle in way more hits than there'd otherwise be.
-
Were OCC right to reset 'Running Up That Hill'?
10 to 15 years ago maybe but nowadays there isn't a huge divergence from the bigger picture (although last.fm has a big BTS lean relatively speaking). But as an avid follower of last.fm charts back in the day, they were no less prone to stagnation than global charts are now, songs from The xx's debut were charting for years on end, alongside perennials like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and of course "Mr. Brightside". I would take it a different way though, I think last.fm users are more inclined to listen a lot to music, enabling them to run up those numbers more quickly. In any case, the main point of my post was that all things considered, the songs that are getting the more repeat plays are not inherently the really old ones, they just stay so high because *a lot* of people listen to them once or twice a year, compared to the relatively smaller subset of music fans who primarily consume current top 40 hits.
-
Were OCC right to reset 'Running Up That Hill'?
Honestly I feel like a cap would do next to nothing anyway. last.fm has been around for aaaaages and on that, tracks like "Mr. Brightside" and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" are only averaging about 10 lifetime plays per listener*. Given how relatively new most Spotify & Apple accounts are by comparison, I imagine the ratio is lower on there. Even if it were a problem, that's what makes these songs popular. You get complaints about fake 'hits' that get their peaks based on initial intrigue and bomb out when no one likes it, but a cap is suggesting that actually sampling out new music to see if you like it is the only valid means of transaction. But on that basis if it were possible to track, you could argue for removing vinyl sales when people already own the album on another format (which is often the case). *Oh and "As It Was" which came out less than 3 months ago? 20 plays per user.
-
Were OCC right to reset 'Running Up That Hill'?
Yeah I can get behind it if it's a first case of a future standard, but if it's just an isolated incident, it's really dumb and undermines the chart's whole purpose by presenting the misleading/inaccurate statement that Kate Bush climbed from #2 to #1 this coming week. Mind you, ACR also does this on a regular basis.

"Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" becomes Kate Bush's 2nd #1 hit, with a 37 gap between doing so and release. I believe this to be a new record. "Unchained Melody" is the only example I can think of that gets close and that's still only a 25 year gap. Otherwise it's Post Malone week I guess as he gets two new top 10 hits this week. There's also another entry for his Kid LAROI collaboration but in the latest edition of confusing/unclear motives, nothing else from the album has impacted, where I'd have expected maybe half a dozen entries in the lower 50, perhaps suggesting a new precedent of not counting album tracks if they miss the top 50. Doja Cat also gets a big boost with "Vegas" which is in part influenced by getting added to Hot Hits Australia although it was vaulting up anyway. Hot Hits Australia actually had a hugely unprecedented changing of the guard last week when they suddenly swapped out about 20% of the whole playlist overnight, including finally removing Wiz Khalifa's "The Thrill" after 66 weeks of occupying space. It's also responsible for Ed Sheeran's latest top 50 entry with "2step", which is a very confusing song to follow if you're one of those 'every chart entry corresponds to one most relevant track' folks. To summarise: It debuted below the top 50 last year when the album came out, it re-entered this year when the Lil Baby version came out (which is what ARIA is crediting), radio is primarily playing the Budjerah version which was selling the best but doing nothing on streams until last week's Hot Hits Australia add. So for what it's worth, the Budjerah version is unquestionably driving the most activity out of the single but that's already changed hands twice. Harry Styles holds the top spot for a third week (or 'holds strong at #3' according to the chart news). Post Malone's last two albums debuted at #1 and spent multiple weeks there, so he fell off + L + ratio + maidenless. Thornhill stock on the other hand has never been hotter as they get their first ever top 10 position at #3. Angel Olsen also gets her 3rd top 40 album, slightly lower than previous entries. For those keeping track also, that is a new peak for Maroon 5's Singles Collection.

ACR alternative suggestions
Honestly I feel like ARIA kind of had the right idea with this. Keep the proper chart accurate* and don't fiddle with it, and just make a second bonus chart that exclusively highlights new releases, so you can get a true reflection of consumption as well as a means to highlight newer stuff *HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I can't say that with a straight face

Already a good omen that she turned up a little bit higher than I expected this week, but she's comfortably leading on iTunes & Spotify all week so far. She previously had a #1 hit with "Wuthering Heights", and "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" reached #6 in 1985. Amidst all the expected rebounds via displacing Harry Styles songs, you'd easily miss that The Kid LAROI is getting a significant boost with all of his tracks as he was touring here at the time. The highest debut of the week is for Kanye West & XXXTENTACION, which bears reminding that the song Ye did with The Game earlier this year should've been a top 50 hit but wasn't counted. Calvin Harris also arrives which means that Dua Lipa replaces "Dua Lipa", although the song doesn't seem to be catching on yet. "Hold My Hand" returns to the top 50 thanks to the movie, and is even charting on Spotify now. Sleepy Hallow scores his 2nd top 50 hit. Harry Styles holds the #1 spot. Historically incumbent international stars are very good at stopping Australian artists from getting to #1, and that's true again. Ball Park Music's latest album becomes their 3rd to peak at #2, I believe 2014's "Puddinghead" missed the #1 spot by a very slim margin. Further we have Def Leppard scoring their highest chart position in over 30 years. Liam Gallagher scores his 3rd top 10 album and highest position yet at #5, while all things considered, #10 is a solid showing for Tate McRae. Tom Cardy's comedy rock album from last year returns with thanks to vinyl sales.

Sheeran to pass Elvis with most weeks on singles chart
100:1 might not be the best choice for a ratio, but I think in general the all-time list is fine, because unlike accumulating chart positions it's very practical (most of the time) for the classics to keep accumulating streams as well. In the long run a lot of big streaming hits that don't hold up to time end up slipping back behind the oldies that they were easily sailing past in their prime.

I'm guessing whatever kworb pulls it from isn't working and so to substitute it, it's just ordering them all based on how recently they were last in the top 100, so everything slowly slips down in uniform fashion.

I mean to be fair, I think "Fine Line" being a monster success is a big contributing factor to this out the gate explosion. Follow ups like this cash in the cheque for higher chart positions all the time but that doesn't make them more popular. Time will tell in the long run. (I'm not hating on the new album, only just now listening to it!)

Australian Election 2022
Yeah Labor have not really shown any sign that they're less buddy buddy with the mining industry than the LNP, but an optimistic read of the election result is a pretty sizeable swing to The Greens + Independents, the former are looking like getting 3 seats in the House of Reps after never getting more than 1, which at least to me indicates the populace does care about climate issues more than previously assumed.

Kendrick Lamar 49 44 290 02 DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS Bruno Mars 50 39 306 01 25 Adele Harry Styles logs a 5th week at #1. I am more than just fairly confident that he's got the #1 spot locked up next week, I am less confident on how many other nearby positions he should hold. This is more due to ARIA shenanigans than his own prowess. What we're witnessing currently is the biggest chart dominance of an album ever so it's just a question on how ARIA will respond. If the chart is accurate, he should have 8 spots in the top 10, and much of #11 & #15 ("Heat Waves" might sneak in but not sure yet). We're right to question odd behaviour too because you have to jump through some hoops to piece together this week's chart. Kendrick Lamar has 14 debuts this week. I know what you're thinking, "Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers" has 18 tracks though! In terms of the top 50 this is nearly on point though I would argue "Rich (Interlude)" probably made the cut. It's an interlude though so fine (even though interludes have charted before). Additionally we have "Savior (Interlude)", "Mother I Sober" and "Mirror". I do not believe any of these did enough to make the top 50, but beyond that as per the hip-hop chart, they also weren't included, which is a pretty heinous crime on taste. Nonetheless we can speculate if "We Cry Together" is one of the least radio friendly songs to ever make the top 50. Also since Drake album tracks have had a troubled past with the charts here, this is Sampha's first ever chart entry. You're also probably aware by now that Amanda Reifer is from Cover Drive, it was 10 years ago in 2012 that Cover Drive scored a top 10 hit with "Turn Up The Love", Blxst has not charted before only because "Chosen" wasn't counted here. Oh also there's a Post Malone song or something. Kendrick scores his 2nd #1 album despite his typical digital only handicap. Actually though it's been so long that not only can you encapsulate BROCKHAMPTON's entire career between "DAMN." and "Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers", but "DAMN." was released before ARIA started counting streams. I'm not 100% certain it would've overcome Ed Sheeran with streaming data but it may have been closer. "To Pimp A Butterfly" did hit #1 I think from just digital sales but I can't 100% recall when we got the CDs here. Anyway yet again we see Florence + The Machine fall short of the hip-hop superstar major release, as she debuts at #2, just like she did in 2018 releasing against Drake's "Scorpion". Also debuting in the top 10 is Mallrat with her debut album, although she has charted in the top 20 with an EP before. I watched Eurovision this year and I do not have any interesting anecdotes or observations but the soundtrack lands at #11. Lower down I'm not certain what's going on with distribution or w/e but The Black Keys have turned up quite low at #35, as well as The Smile just below them. I much more readily accept the low top 50 arrival of a solo album from Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson and that other band. Also get f'ed Scomo lmao.
