  1. I haven't seen anyone mention this, but I wonder if Spotify's update (I think a couple of months ago) has had a major effect on artists promoting new singles. You used to get an artist's discography of singles/albums listed in chronological order under their top 5/10 by default, putting the newest stuff in the forefront, but now that's stuck behind fiddly tabs with the default being 'Popular releases'. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who ended up listening to the newest release did so out of convenience and they're now listening to their established material instead. It's a subtle change that takes away some of the former prominence and attention from new singles.

CITY Kendrick Lamar For the second week in a row we have a #1 debut on the singles chart. I believe the last time this has happened was in 2016 with Katy Perry's "Rise" and Major Lazer's "Cold Water", perhaps these two will have more longevity than the former. The new one though comes from Jack Harlow giving him his first ever #1 single, which interpolates Fergie's #2 hit "Glamorous". He pulls through with an even bigger opening week than Harry but as a caveat is coming with a bigger drop. I expect Jack will hold the #1 spot this week but it's so close that I could see paid/free streaming ratios perhaps swaying the outcome the other way. Harry is actually starting to offset the initial declines and as I write this I've discovered that "As It Was" got more streams yesterday than it did the same day last week, so how about that. This ends up being unlucky for Camila Cabello who is hoisted a #11 peak for now with "Bam Bam". In what can only be considered a funny coincidence, WILLOW climbs into the top 50 this week with one of her older tracks "Wait A Minute!", which actually gave a run for the chart a couple years ago but didn't quite get there. This time around the momentum is running stronger so now we'll wait to see if it gets playlist backing. Earlier this year I noted that Huskii did a very rare feat of debuting at #1 with his debut album having never made the ARIA Chart before that in any capacity, which had not happened since 2009. Not to take anything away from that achievement but it's actually happened again this week with Wet Leg. The group's rise to popularity makes me extremely nostalgic for the late 2000s when these sorts of bands would just pop up out of nowhere and take the spotlight as if they've always been there. It's very rare nowadays that an international group does it but hey it sure worked. "Chaise Longue" did make triple j's Hottest 100 for 2021 at #45 earlier this year too. On the topic of Australian artists gaining fervour with their debut, look no further than Short Stack who debuted at #1 with their debut album in 2009 (gosh that year is coming up a lot). They've been largely absent for a while so this is their first new album since 2015, and it keeps up their record with 4/4 top 10 debuts. Tool return to the chart thanks to a vinyl release of their latest album, while Camila Cabello also debuts a decent bit lower than she's used to. Mind you she still beats Father John Misty who I'm surprised to not even see in the top 50 at all given how well he did in the UK. Jack Harlow returns with his first album to the tune of a slight new peak.

Harry Styles gets his 2nd #1 (or 3rd if you want to count "Drag Me Down") with "As It Was", which is also the 2nd time he's knocked off a long running #1. Once again it looks like he'll probably be replaced within a week as Jack Harlow has taken his huge opening week and surpassed it, with "First Class" scoring comfortably the highest ever Spotify debut ever in Australia. We have some more new entries this week too, with Shawn Mendes fairing better than he has been lately with "When You're Gone", although it's already not certain if he's staying stable with it. Lil Tjay also debuts with a song that Hot Hits Australia are not interested in acknowledging (59 weeks of "The Thrill" btw). He'll probably drop off pretty fast. Not yet certain for Dean Lewis who is doing better than his 2021 material by entering the top 40 but is also already seeing some shaky streaming performance. Red Hot Chili Peppers have their 7th #1 album, I am bereft of interesting things to say about it. Also in the top 10 this week is Confidence Man who've jumped up quite a bit from their first album. That's swapping with Meshuggah who get their 3rd top 50 album but it's quite a way down from when they reached the top 10 in 2016.
  6. Not quite as immediate but I think "Old Town Road" and the entire career of Lil Nas X is worth consideration in that regard.
  7. Yeah, compared to other countries in the Anglosphere, American rappers tend to always do a bit worse in the UK, this includes every Jack Harlow song to date

XXXTentacion 49 60 501 01 THE VERY BEST INXS 50 51 306 01 TEENAGE DREAM: THE COMPLETE CONFECTION Katy Perry "Heat Waves" reaches 11 weeks at #1 which only 18 songs have done now. It'll have a hard time making it 12 weeks as it were, since just half a week's tracking has pretty much guaranteed Harry Styles a week at #1 by a huge margin. It remains to be seen how long he maintains it but I'd be surprised if he were down so soon. Otherwise the top 10 is fairly stagnant this week. Dave has managed the first 2022 song to spent two weeks in the top 10 but in actually deranged Spotify Australia moments, they've shoved "Starlight" to the very bottom of the Hot Hits playlist, implying that they're ready to dump it soon while still promoting fresh new singles like "Heat Waves", "Kiss Me More", "BED", and of course we're about to hit week 58 of Wiz Khalifa's "The Thrill" which is still not being acknowledged on the ARIA Chart. Speaking of not being acknowledged by ARIA, last week that was the case for the cover of "Tom's Diner" which arrives in the top 20, further sating Australia's fascination for dogshit covers. The DNA remix of Suzanne Vega's original reached #8 back in the day. I think it goes without saying that Australia loves Foo Fighters. They were just in the country in fact and now with the passing of Taylor Hawkins they score a big new peak for "Everlong" (which he didn't actually play on), originally a #45 debut and peaker back in 1997. We now tragically have 3 different Dr. Luke songs in the top 50. Tate McRae scores a big debut for "chaotic" though it looks to be dropping quickly out of the chart next week. Most peculiar this week is the arrival of J. Cole's "No Role Modelz", which has spent much of the last year within the top 100 slowly crawling up the chart, last week catching a big break by jumping into the Spotify top 50. It is so barely in the ARIA top 50 that I can actually acknowledge that the real reason it got over the line this week is because of the song's multiple references to Will Smith & The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It's a bit touch & go at the moment so I can't say it's hugely likely to stay in the top 50 next week. Machine Gun Kelly gets his first #1 in Australia this week. 2020's "Tickets To My Downfall" debuted and peaked at #2 behind Joji. This time around though he bests the otherwise sure bet of Michael Buble, who admittedly has not hit #1 since 2013 and all his albums since then have reached #2. Xavier Rudd scores his 7th top 10 album, 4 of which have peaked at #6. Placebo score their 4th top 10 album, having gotten there with every album since "Meds", which is their highest charter at #4. After a reasonable (though not quite Placebo-lengthed) gap, Camp Cope return with their 3rd album which doesn't quite hit the top 10 like its predecessor, an album I commend very highly though I haven't listened to this new one yet. Denzel Curry is right behind them at #12 which is his highest chart position to date. Aldous Harding also scores her first top 50 album here.

XXXTentacion "Heat Waves" enters the relatively rare air of a double digit reign, which I believe only 25 songs have done so (or 24 if you choose to disregard "Cold Heart"'s fake week at #1). Perhaps the most peculiar thing to note this week is that it's spent 60 weeks in the top 10, obviously a record, but this is split between two separate 30 week consecutive runs. Next week it'll have 20 more weeks in the top 10 than its nearest rival, and it'll also very likely still be #1 because there is still no competition. Ed Sheeran is still getting dividends from the Bring Me The Horizon version of "Bad Habits" but also his Australian tour went on sale recently which has pushed everything of his that isn't "The Joker And The Queen" back up. In fact "Bad Habits" is 3 weeks away from matching "Dance Monkey" as the 2nd longest running top 10 hit. The only notable competition going around is Dave who is still gaining ground on Spotify and might be able to sneak a top 5 peak as everything around him weakens further. As of now, "Starlight" is the 3rd song released in 2022 to make the top 10, and next week it should be the first to spend 2 weeks there, and likely the highest charter, as it's currently tied with "Fingers Crossed" at #8. "Ghost" is also trying very hard to get into the top 10 and might be able to finally do that soon even though it's dropping down, the top 10 is just so weak right now. Elley Duhé reaches #27 to match her peak with "Happy Now". Bring Me The Horizon kind of have two songs in the top 50 this week as "maybe" gets in, which is seeing some decent stability with the release of Machine Gun Kelly's album. More peculiar for me is the return of Joel Fletcher to the chart, and the first time in the top 50 for Brothers. Joel Fletcher had a bunch of hits in the early 2010s as a big proponent of the brief commercial boom of the Melbourne bounce scene. Most notably he got to #2 with his rendition of Savage's "Swing" in 2014. He's teamed up this time with Brothers, who are a hip-hop duo from Brisbane. If you remember Hooligan Hefs' hit "SEND IT!" from last year, this track has a fair bit on common with that, so don't be surprised if Australian radio refuses to get on board with another Australian song that's actually charting. Likely owing to a slow week, Charli XCX scores her first ever #1 album. She's only previously gotten into the top 10 once with "Charli" and only even made the top 50 twice before so this is relatively out of character, and only "Good Ones" briefly has charted over here. She fends off a return to #1 for Ed Sheeran, with the next highest debut coming from Vanessa Amorosi, who hasn't hit the top 10 in about a decade. You could say she's somewhat contemporaneous with Josh Pyke who also debuts this week, and certainly not of ArrDee who charts with his mixtape. Next week expect a competitive chart with the arrival of Michael Buble, Machine Gun Kelly, Xavier Rudd, Camp Cope, and perhaps Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits will make a big vault.
  14. If the purpose is to represent true popularity, then a stream cap would be counter-intuitive. A song that compels people to listen to it hundreds of times each certainly must have something going for it that a song people dip out on after 3 plays doesn't, and should proportionately be represented as thus. If we're really in the interest of representing true popularity, then you should not count streams until someone's streamed something twice, the first is just a sampler usually after all*. I think in general though, tinkering with chart rules in order to restore a preferred state of affairs is inherently biased which I think charts should attempt to avoid making apparent. Not to mention all you'll get is a slight quick fix before settling on a similarly dull equilibrium and you'll need a quick fix on that. *I am not genuinely advocating for this Also btw last.fm has been tracking plays of it for nearly 2 decades and the average user who has listened to "Mr. Brightside" (the most recorded song on the platform) has only listened to it 11 times on average, I think it's underestimated how much of a long running song's stream comes from the fact that it has a much wider audience than current top 40 hits who may only listen to the song a few times a year if that. I think any reasonable listener cap would have a barely noticeable effect outside of BTS fans, who I don't think deserve to be vilified for their passionate fanfare.
  15. Spotify does seem to be a fan of the comma separation which admittedly works for their platform, it's all always been marketing anyhow. Of course, you won't see that catching on in conversation because there's no good way to say it. I've always found the distinction to be nebulous anyway, one song's feat. could be a show stealing moment, another could be an artist just saying hi. Insert something about DJ Khaled here. Then you get all those messy cases like Bebe Rexha initially having her name not on "Hey Mama" because it made for too much clutter or that twit over here who still refuses to credit the singer so he can be sole auteur of his clout chasing cover of "Dreams". And that's to say nothing of the swathes of chart historians who use these technicalities to discredit contributions like 'oh they haven't had an actual hit, only features'. If they're on the song, they're on the song, simple.

  17. Double-edged sword of ACR is that while it takes twice as many streams to get high up, it also means that the songs need to lose twice as many streams to fall at the usual pace.

If you thought maybe this week competition would emerge then you'd be sorely mistaken. Actually it's still extending its lead over its closest competitors. It's possible "Bad Habits" will return to #2 given how they're dipping. Thus far this year we've had 2 songs released in 2022 to reach the top 10, both for a single week. Dave will be hoping to make it 3 as "Starlight" vaults to easily be his highest charter ever, and should at least next week move up some more. Maybe Justin Bieber can still get there with "Ghost", but as is, he's spent 21 weeks between #11 & #20, the most of any non-top 10 hit. Imagine Dragons themselves are closing in on 2nd place in that regard with "Enemy". Nirvana have historically had two top 5 hits, and their other top 50 entries all peaked between #21 & #25. That does not change this week with "Something In The Way" wedging nicely in at #22. It enters just ahead of Megan & Dua who should climb next week though I'm not sure how much of their current traction is being leveraged by playlisting (I'm not certain there's ever been a moment in the past 28 months that Dua Lipa hasn't been on HHA/TTH) but maybe they can pull a "Bam Bam" and stick around, something has to. Though it should also be said that with Jnr Choi just barely holding onto a top 50 spot this week while being at #8 on HHA and #31 on TTH, playlisting isn't everything. By the way we're close to 56 weeks on the playlist for "The Thrill" which ARIA still isn't counting. A month after scoring their first ever top 10 single, The Wiggles score their first ever #1 album. If this is possibly making you be cynical about promotional efforts of The Wiggles, you probably need to log off. This particular album features the band doing a series of diverse covers of the likes of Fatboy Slim, Dropkick Murphys, AC/DC, Rihanna & The Chats, while also it features a disc of local artists doing covers of Wiggles classics, fulfilling a long held desire of all of us to hear DZ Deathrays cover "Hot Potato", and such. In the process, they hold off Rex Orange County from scoring his first ever #1, "Who Cares?" is his highest charting and 2nd top 10 album, maybe the next one will be the ticket. Also seeing new heights is Ghost who also score their 2nd top 10 album and highest charter at #3. '80s/'90s icons Hoodoo Gurus score their highest charting album in nearly 30 years. There's not much else to note except that the perennially bubbling Coldplay live album which serves as a proto Greatest Hits in the stream equivalent albums era has returned for only its 4th ever week in the top 50.
  19. There's also just in general a lot of music that gets heard by a lot of people that doesn't get close to making the chart. It's not the fault of the public, nor is it a failure of the chart, it's just that in this age of easy access, people are listening to a wider range of music & sounds than ever before. When you coalesce all those plays together, you create a small collection of songs that consistently outperform everything else, but it's a mistake to say that this proves music listeners are more ignorant than ever before.

  22. Though it's obviously just not quite as big a deal here, I feel like the margins have been so slim that Spotify not including 'Bruno' on major playlists was genuinely the margin that kept it off #1, hard to say if YouTube data could've gotten there at peak. With Avril I feel like Australia's album pure sales market has tended to be a little healthier than NZ's so a lot of albums that just poke ahead of the cavalcade of streaming hits here get lost in the shuffle in NZ. Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators Glass Animals lodge an 8th week at #1. They continue to extend their lead on Spotify and their challengers continue to not exist, so they're pretty cozy for a 9th week. We do have a busy week of entries this week, Camila Cabello leading the pack with "Bam Bam" which is off to a pretty good start and hasn't dropped back yet. Labrinth & Zendaya replace their entry from last week with a new one from the most recent season of Euphoria, though it doesn't look like sticking around at the moment. We have another classic Powers That Be moment on the ARIA Chart where radio and Spotify have both massively lapped up "Following The Sun", the SUPER-Hi track from 2020 which is simultaneously top 10 on radio and debuted at #1 on Hot Hits Australia out of nowhere. It's a pretty good track too but if you're wondering why Australia randomly decided to get into it, there's your answer. Just below it we are faced with deciding who is more gross & unpleasant, Tyga or Dr. Luke. Moving on, Elley Duhe has her first lead artist entry, having previously made the top 30 alongside Zedd on "Happy Now". As someone who bought this song 2 years ago and long since established a crackpot theory that it was ghostwritten by my favourite singer, this is all very strange but you do you TikTok. Dave has charted twice before in Australia, always with assistance from a more established artist (Ed Sheeran, Stormzy), but this time he breaks out on his own and it looks like he's gonna make a big move as "Starlight" is #5 on Spotify right now(!). Lastly Elley Duhe does not even have the oldest debut because Jaymes Young has finally broken through with "Infinity" which has been stuck just outside the top 50 for weeks. Things will get even older next week as Nirvana look set to chart for the first time in a long time with "Something In The Way", challenging Megan & Dua for the top debut. Things have finally happened on the album chart as the Encanto soundtrack gets to #1. Over the weekend we had a flood relief concert with numerous big names in Australian music. Among those were Missy Higgins who had just released a mini-album inspired by the TV Series "Total Control", the title track is also a cover of The Motels' top 10 hit. Missy has now had 3 #3 albums to go with her 3 #1s. Also entering this week is Sabaton, whose last album made the top 10 but here they make do with #25. Next week should have entries from The Wiggles, Rex Orange County, Ghost & the Hoodoo Gurus, something for everyone.

  24. Might have helped it a touch but the track has already popped into the top 200 a few times lately (most recently Feb 26th) so it's probably just dipping in and out. It only gained a couple hundred plays in Australia relative to recent performance, where it's been a top 200 mainstay for a few weeks.

On a casual glance you might question if anything has changed, and I think it's a little difficult to fully determine how much it's affecting things just because this particular week seems like a lot of what would otherwise benefit was trending downward. Notably the Encanto stuff which would've likely all dropped a bit this week but instead has a climb so minor that you might attribute it to general stability randomness. Most of the beneficiaries otherwise seem to be the biggest of the biggest, the tracks that have a billion or so views on YouTube. You know, the songs that people clearly like on their own and don't need to be prodded to listen to them. The Weeknd is a big beneficiary in the top 50. It was also probably the difference that pushed Ed Sheeran to #3 this week with "Bad Habits". Oh and anyway the main story this week is that for the 2nd time this year we've had a song return to #1 roughly a year after getting there. But if you find the whole Christmas thing boring and predictable then surely you'd agree that this is a really funny and/or bizarre circumstance. Perhaps every March we'll be calling for "Heat Waves" to return to #1 going forward. This is also an interesting week to note the variance that the top of the chart provides, which chart runs alone don't demonstrate. For instance, in February last year "Heat Waves" was doing nearly 2.5 million streams on Spotify, and was #2 on ARIA. Right now it's barely staying above 1 million, doing lower numbers than the week last year that it dropped to #11. The Winter Olympics were on recently and I feel bizarrely inclined to mention that Australia's (not to mention the entire Southern Hemisphere) first ever gold medal at the event was in 2002, when speed-skater Stephen Bradbury was an unlikely finalist, qualifying for the semi-finals after a disqualification allowed him to take a faster skater's place. His strategy in the semi-finals & finals was to hang back and hope his faster opponents crashed. This indeed happened twice and now he's a national hero. Arguably Glass Animals are too, now that Dave has an ass tattoo of Australia. Meanwhile there's just one top 50 entry this week and despite being a 2.5 year old song, it replaces a 19.5 year old song so it makes the chart remarkably fresher on average. That being Labrinth getting in with "All For Us", mostly thanks to the Zendaya version. Awkwardly Labrinth should probably have another top 50 entry with "Mount Everest". I was really hoping with the addition of YouTube data, ARIA might audit their chart a bit better this week and add some of those missing tracks, but no, this outdated chart practice that disproportionately affects music made by people of colour seems to continue. If you live in Australia, you will not be surprised that Gang Of Youths are debuting at #1 (well kind of, ARIA's Chart suggests that they climbed up from #399 last week). This is the 2nd time they've done so, and it's fair to say that ever since the release of that last album, they've heralded the crown as the local band that everyone creams over the most. Not to mention that much like Tame Impala in 2015, I've certainly noticed a lot more international attention for them as well. Just behind them is a debut for Slash which I mistakenly predicted a few weeks ago not realising that the physical release was not yet due, so Slash missed the top 50 running on just digital sales, but now lands at a #2 position that almost certainly would not have been boosted if the digital sales came through now. Seemingly peaking quite some time ago, Avril Lavigne bucks the trend and scores her highest charting album in a decade getting to #3. She's now scored 7 for 7 on top 10 albums. Central Cee enters that rare legion of British rappers with top 10 albums alongside people like Dave & KSI, while Tears For Fears have finally sown those seeds of love, scoring their highest ever charting album that is not titled "Songs From The Big Chair" and does not include such eternal bangers as "Shout", "Head Over Heels" and the other one. Local country or thereabouts singer Casey Barnes narrowly misses matching his highest chart peak, landing 1 spot behind. He bares no relation to local legend Jimmy Barnes. I am also uncertain if YouTube is impacting the album chart though given the very minor effect on the singles chart, I can't imagine there'd be much to see here either. Next week should see new entries for Missy Higgins, Sabaton & Marillion. ARIA's midweek headline mentions Encanto but not the article itself so I suspect maybe this is its chance to finally hit #1.
