It just needs to make 8 more weeks at #1 to start making new waves, who knows? It may be able to hold onto #1 for another week with a lack of competition. I think "We Don't Talk About Bruno" could potentially climb to #1 but at the moment its lack of Spotify playlists are severely holding it back. Lost Frequencies takes advantage of margins to make a seemingly big jump into the top 5, while Luude reaches the top 10. Both are challenging Glass Animals to end their 52 week reign at #1 on the Dance chart. Speaking of Glass Animals, this week marks their 53rd week in the top 10, which is the first time a song has ever spent a year in the top 10, though thanks to Ed Sheeran's "Visiting Hours", it's not consecutive. We also now get a 3rd Encanto track in the top 50. On the other hand, Encanto still hasn't hit the top spot because The Weeknd has come in clutch with CD sales for "Dawn FM". It's otherwise another dreadfully quiet week with only 1 new entry, this coming from The Whitlams, who oddly enough got the majority of their points from digital sales. For those who were curious, The Whitlams are a piano rock & such band who were especially popular in the late '90s & early '00s. They took their name from former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, who actually announced one of the band's ARIA Award wins, as well as their #1 placing in the 1997 triple j Hottest 100 with "No Aphrodisiac". That's for sure their signature song despite never actually reaching the ARIA top 50. Next week should be a little more busy with new albums from Korn, Mitski & Black Country, New Road, something for everyone.
  3. Unless the internet is playing an elaborate prank, Zendaya's always (or rather, has for years) been on the track.
  4. Most of the album is pretty embarrassing ("Your Love" is a jam at least) that it makes "Heat Waves" look pretty good by comparison.

It monopolises the discourse so much that it's not a surprise that very little else usually happens on the relevant week. And of course, as you may well know by now, our nation proudly and democratically declared the best song of 2021 to be The Wiggles' cover of "Elephant" by Tame Impala. This is somewhat unprecedented for triple j's Hottest 100, which has never been won by a Like A Version (or a cover), and despite triple j being marketed as youth radio, they've never previously featured The Wiggles, arguably the biggest band for the extreme youth demographic. It is always worth noting that the Hottest 100 was initially devised in the '80s for the purpose of giving a voice to the people, in an era of very boomer-based 'Greatest of All Time' music lists that usually just devolve to putting "Stairway to Heaven" on another pedestal. With that in mind, though many at this point don't recall the history, the poll has been prone to not taking itself especially seriously. When the poll was limited to just music from the last year, it was first won by comedian Denis Leary's novelty hit "Asshole", beating out the more boring consensus choice of Radiohead's "Creep". We would further see silly winners such as "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" and "Thrift Shop", so in this sense, the poll being won by The Wiggles is par for the course. Now this has big effects on the ARIA Chart, and it has ever since the mid 2000s. So I present to you this week that for the first time ever, The Wiggles have an ARIA top 50 single, after 30 years of unironically some of the most extensive touring of any band from this country. It's also the highest ever charting Tame Impala song, and the first ever Like A Version to make the top 50 (Ocean Alley previously made the ARIA top 100 with their "Baby Come Back" cover, and DMA'S cover of "Believe" by Cher has been certified platinum. Then again, it is worth noting that back in the '80s, Anthony & Jeff of future Wiggles fame first found moderate fame here as members of The Cockroaches, a pub rock band who had a top 10 hit with "She's The One" in 1987. Jeff is no longer a member of The Wiggles but he and Murray both reunited with the band to perform on this cover. Emma has also since recording this cover left the band which means that we are now up to our 4th generation yellow Wiggle, who if she were on this track, would be the second youngest person to have an ARIA top 50 hit, after Willow Sage Hart. Anyway, there are 100 songs in the Hottest 100, and "STAY" got the runner up spot which is enough to push it back up to #1 for a 15th week, which is enough to tie it as the 2nd longest running #1 ever. It could take that title outright next week if it holds on. Interestingly enough, I believe this is the first time the Hottest 100 can be considered directly responsible for determining the week's ARIA #1 single, as it has constantly been narrowly held off. Glass Animals would have risen straight to #1 with "Heat Waves" on most weeks but it was peak "drivers license" era so it had to wait several weeks before finally getting there. Second runners up Spacey Jane also score their 2nd top 50 hit, you might recall they debuted on the chart a year ago with "Booster Seat" after that landed at #2 in the Hottest 100, so it's more evidence that triple j is doing all of the heavy lifting in actually promoting Australian artists to charting status. Most big climbs this week are also Hottest 100 entrants, but unrelated to this are top 50 entries for Charlie Puth & Gunna. I am also now remembering that last week "Eazy" by The Game & Kanye West was inexplicably left off the chart, which is the first new chart omission in a while. There is so little happening on the album chart that if not for Meat Loaf passing away, we may have had zero debuts on the chart (Walker Hayes was definitely close though). But as is, "Bat Out Of Hell" extends its lead as the highest selling album of all time in Australia, as it outsells everything this week, returning to #1. Meat Loaf couldn't quite crack the top 50 singles chart, I think potentially with his death coinciding with the Hottest 100, a lot of people (myself included!) were too preoccupied to dive into his catalogue at the time, so his streaming figures were a lot lower than in the UK. His return to the chart blocks Encanto's soundtrack from climbing to #1, though with no obvious competition I can see, it'll likely get there next week. Sing 2's soundtrack also gets a slight new peak, previously reaching #10.

  8. Genuinely thought I gave Ashes To Ashes my 30, I know I definitely took my time finalising the top few spots!

  11. Dunno, though it's probably pretty in line with how unconventional soundtrack hits tend to go here. If Hot Hits Australia & Today's Top Hits wanted to get involved they'd easily be knocking on the top 2's door though.

That won't be the case next week although I assume ARIA are taking our Racist Day holiday off and not updating with midweeks. So short of strange shenanigans we're in for a peculiar chart next week where perhaps Australia's hardest working and touring band of the last 30 years are finally getting their due with a top 50 hit single. I'm of course referring to The Wiggles who in response to their triple j Hottest 100 victory on the weekend were briefly #2 on all streaming platforms with their cover of Tame Impala's "Elephant". I can't confidently predict their final position because it's pretty volatile but don't be surprised if they reach the top 10 this week. Also thanks to landing at #2 in the Hottest 100, The Kid LAROI is very likely returning to #1 with "STAY". They replaced Meat Loaf at the top of the iTunes chart who I think could possibly sneak into the top 50 but I'm even less certain of that. I think in a twist on the kobbar formula, his chart boost was perhaps badly timed in Australia where the news broke late at night when nobody had time to dive deep into his catalogue, and further, a lot of people were quite pre-occupied with the Hottest 100 on the next day. Make no mistake, "Bat Out Of Hell" is the highest selling album of all time in Australia (just narrowly ahead of John Farnham's "Whispering Jack" on Platinum certifications) but his streaming impact was quite muted here compared to the UK. Oh and I should probably mention the return of "Lost" by Frank Ocean. Funnily enough it's just shy of 9 years since it first hit the top 50. Back in 2012 it was the song from "channel ORANGE" that triple j were most intent on spinning which helped it land at #8 on the Hottest 100, which helped it become an ARIA top 50 single. Amusingly, this one week top 50 hit actually has triple platinum status, the same as the other 10 year old song in the chart, Havana Brown's big top 10 hit "We Run The Night". If that's not a sign that comparing chart runs as the only relevant basis of popularity is misguided at best, well I have way more examples where that came from. Perhaps surprisingly, The Weeknd holds on for a 2nd week at #1 on the album chart, something he's never done before. Have to wonder if maybe The Wombats were unlucky with timing, unable to capitalise on their Hottest 100 success to drive first week sales. The band now have 3 #2 albums without a #1, which is the same as Backstreet Boys, Dead Letter Circus & Halsey, 1 less than King Gizz, and 3 less than Radiohead. Bonobo scores his first ever top 10 album this week, while also in the top 10 we have the unlikely collaboration between inexplicably popular Lime Cordiale, and inexplicably not primarily known as a musician Idris Elba. Apparently they met when Elba was in Australia shooting a movie and it blossomed into a full collaborative EP. Lower down Lee Kernaghan has a Greatest Hits set, and Cordae gets his 2nd top 50 album, though lower than he charted in 2019. Next week I'm expecting maybe more Meat Loaf here, and also probably Walker Hayes.
  13. I make the bold opinion that no one hit wonder has an additional song with a quarter of a billion streams which largely predate 'the hit'. At least also I have to rescind accusations of bamboozling today. @1484862713461448708

Lauren Spencer-Smith debuts in the top 10 but probably won't last because Australia hates new music. Similar story with The Weeknd but it is notable because this is the first ever time that he's had album tracks appear on the chart, as seemingly a consistent hold out to this for no apparent reason except to maybe make his charting discography look neater. "Down Under" vaults into the top 20 perhaps hoping to be a future challenger for the Dance Chart #1 spot that has been held for 11 months by Glass Animals (ARIA spur of nothing decided "Heat Waves" was a dance song 8 months into its chart run and it debuted at #1, from this perspective "The Business" was a fluke #1 pre-categorisation). David Kushner arrives but he has a shit Spotify bio so I know nothing about him. I thought he might be Australian based on his top cities but ARIA doesn't seem to think so. He's also headed down after this debut. What is heading up however and is in a way a debut is "edamame", which you should know has been hovering on the Spotify chart for about 4-5 months now and I was beginning to believe that ARIA might never acknowledge it, but now it's catching 3rd wind so it looks to go even higher, though come End Of Year chart time we'll have to lament that it's missing a week of data. The Weeknd debuts at #1 on the album chart. On an unrelated note, Jim Carrey has spread harmful misinformation about vaccines in the past. Debuting behind him is an album I thought came out last year which is the new DOPE LEMON release, which is the ever-ongoing side project for Angus Stone not to be confused with Lady Of The Sunshine (notable for releasing a near note-for-note identical version of "Big Jet Plane" in 2009 to no fanfare), or his own solo career. If you combine all of this though it's his 3rd time getting a solo #2 album. Noted From Software acolyte Gunna scores his highest ever charting album this week. Next week has something for everyone(?): The Wombats, Lee Kernaghan, Lime Cordiale & Idris Elba, FKA twigs, Earl Sweatshirt, Bonobo.

Firstly I'll just make some clarifications since the ARIA Charts are written in a different language to our own which we're still trying to decipher to this day. All the credits provided I spelled them correctly are as is on the chart. ARIA have a habit of choosing one credit and maybe changing it once but then sticking with it to the bitter end. This means that when remixes come out they usually just leave as is or completely disregard common sense in the long run. So yes that is Miley Cyrus on the 4th biggest hit of the year and no, that version of the song was not remotely as popular as the original. Similarly if you look at this year's Hip-Hop/R&B list, you'll find that Skrillex is still contributing to "HUMBLE.". Secondly, ARIA run these numbers purely from what appeared on their chart. I've learnt recently that this includes sales figures beyond even the top 500. This is data from every weekly chart dated 11/01/2021 to 03/01/2022 inclusive. This however means that if ARIA were initially not tracking a song but later include it, those early weeks are lost forever. Notable losers in this category include "Woman" by Doja Cat which was missing for a month and a half, "Riptide" by Vance Joy which disappeared 18 months ago and has never returned, and also "The Thrill" by Wiz Khalifa which is still missing to this day. It is also minutely possible that "Meet Me At Our Spot" and "Love Tonight" could've squeezed in if they'd been tracked all year but I'm less certain of this. The album chart is the same deal as the singles chart except we can never be certain of what counts to what. It certainly appears as if streams of "Fix You" (or any of their hits) by Coldplay are being re-directed to their "Live In Buenos Aires" album which makes this list for the 2nd year in a row, but it's possible that not all of them are, maybe "Yellow" or "Adventure of a Lifetime" go to their respective studio albums instead. Until ARIA decide to grow more transparent with their data, we'll never know. This is the 5th year in a row that "Perfect" has made the list, with no signs of slowing down, in fact the signs are so few that it's actually 18 places higher than it was last year, though you might attribute it to Ed Sheeran putting out an album this year as all of his stuff ("No.6" excluded) is higher this year than last year. It's however the first time that "Mr Brightside" has made the list which perhaps will join the crew of songs that are on this list every year. There were more Australian singles this year than last year, 15 vs. 10. If you wish to argue that The Kid LAROI saved Australian music last year, well Facebook would have fun with that thinkpiece. On the other hand, the album chart is a big swing in the other direction, dropping from 24 to 14. Considering that this week's ARIA top 50 has only 4 Australian albums and a year ago there were 10, it doesn't look like it's getting better, so perhaps we'll need to commission Bluey to save Australian music this year. Somehow I'm skeptical that "Down Under", "We Run The Night", "Cold Heart" and "The Thrill" are gonna utilise their exposure to move Australian albums off shelves.

The worst #1 hit of 2021 is also now the worst #1 hit of 2022 so it'll be interesting to see if that holds up 12 months later. After weeks of seeming destined to never chart, Lost Frequencies now has his 2nd ever top 10 hit, as does Calum Scott. But if we're gonna talk about new peaks on the chart then the big elephant in the room is that after some 17 years of being a #29 peaker, "Mr. Brightside" is now a #23 peaker. I've said it before but it bears repeating that ARIA have historically miscounted its streams forever, initially seeming to count close to none of them and lately seeming to only count the Spotify streams. This is an odd week so I can't confirm but it looks like they may have finally sorted things out. That's not to say this new peak is solely for that, as it did hit a new weekly streaming peak on Spotify thanks to NYE generally, but I was expecting it to land at around #40 this week given past experiences. Also this week, Encanto hits, though Hot Hits AU isn't acknowledging it yet so they might not be able to get much higher for now. What are Hot Hits Australia supporting you ask? Why of course it's more Australian quota landfill! Now we're still busy trying to get rid of last year's Australian quota landfill (Wiz Khalifa's "Walking On A Dream" sampler has been there for 10 *months* and counting, and general garbage man Jolyon Petch is still giving Stevie Nicks royalties), so generally it's not a good time for newly written Australian songs (unless David Kushner is Australian? Can't confirm it but most of his top cities are here). For a couple of weeks the top song on Hot Hits Australia was the Hooligan Hefs & Teddy Cream remix of Havana Brown's "We Run The Night", which of course was a top 10 hit back in 2011 (more fun facts, it was far more popular in Australia with the original version, not the Pitbull remix, although now because of Spotify tagging hell, the original has very lousy streaming numbers). This remix dropped months ago to fanfare that can only be described as Hooligan Hefs gets a decent pull for any new song he puts out, but even then it wasn't on my radar at all. The people who brought you "Look Into My Eyes" by Brando I assume pushed this to the forefront and so now Havana Brown is back in the top 50 as someone's vanity project that is a complete non-entity outside of this Spotify push. Oh but we're not done here because it was replaced a few days ago by a slightly (operative word) more interesting one as Luude's remix of "Down Under" started blowing up in New Zealand before catching on here. It's slightly more interesting because it's drum & bass which is not a common sighting on the charts and as someone who finds "Overkill" by Men At Work to be one of the best songs ever written, I should be thrilled, but honestly "Down Under" is so brutally overplayed that I can no longer ever fathom anyone choosing to listen to it. I don't have a problem with "Khe Sanh", "Thunderstruck", "Better", "Run To Paradise", "To Her Door" etc but this one gets me, so it's a pretty lousy state of affairs for what will be one of the biggest Australian hits of the year. Adele notches a 7th week at #1 which brings her rather close to the tally of "25", which managed 8 weeks at the top. The Weeknd might have something to say about that next week though. Encanto vaults into the top 10, and Radiohead go back in with big vinyl sales.
  21. Tbh if you look at Take My Breath's Spotify stats you see a rapid exodus from a lot of charts after months of relative stability, suggesting that playlists were keeping it up but it wasn't really sticking. Someone who merely heard a song a bunch 4 months ago is probably not going to rush to its accompanying album on impulse.

Dec 24th + 25th matches pretty closely to the week before that. So if nothing else here is a stark visualisation of just how much data was missing last week with how much some of these songs have climbed. This is Mariah Carey's 4th time in a row ascending to the top spot for a single week, and Wham!'s second time ever at #2 (originally spending a long time at #3 back in the '80s). Michael Buble retains his status as 3rd highest and this time he's beaten all of the secular music and gets a new peak of #3. Brenda Lee should be rubbing shoulders with them in the top 4 but with what data is counted she just sneaks into the top 10 for the first time. In general most Christmas music is at a new high, given that last year's tracking weeks were even worse, so short of a paradigm shift, we should see Christmas songs chart higher and higher in the next few years. I'll also make special notice to point out Chris Rea, Jose Feliciano & Shakin' Stevens whose songs have never made the top 50 before (notably Jose hadn't made the top 100 in the streaming era at all before). This is also true of Paul McCartney a little lower down, while Kylie Minogue enters with her "Santa Baby" cover that hasn't charted since its original release either. This is also not enough to stop "Heat Waves" which has now spent 11 months in the top 10. Not much to note on the album chart but Adele's still #1, and the Encanto soundtrack pops in, assumably ready for bigger things next week.
