She's definitely solid for next week although it does seem that she's likely to succumb to her prior equilibrium, which is an unnecessarily wordy way to say she'll go back to moving the units she was before the album came out which probably isn't enough for #1. Adele also has the lion's share of new entries this week, including two in the top 10. This gives her the rare feat of having 3 top 10 singles and albums at the same time which hasn't been done since Ed Sheeran did it back in 2017. It also allows me to point out ARIA Shenanigans™, as eagle-eyed viewers might note that Adele has merely 9 debuts this week, with "Woman Like Me" and "Love Is A Game" missing. I think they'd probably have made the top 50 but not quite top 40 with the rest of the album. We'll never know why they're missing though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The other proper debut this week is from GAYLE who is showing some serious Arizona Zervas energy by vaulting up the chart at rapid speed near the end of the year, and continues to introduce a world where globally charting artists have Twitter follower counts in a similar ballpark to me, though in her defence it is slightly difficult to find her. Perhaps her handle suggests she'll be appearing on Jeopardy! soon. "abcdefu" will probably climb into the top 10 next week. Imagine Dragons climb into the top 50 to score their biggest hit in ages with "Enemy". It's the first time in the chart for JID and shockingly also the first time for the intangible entity of League of Legends. A few months back Angus & Julia Stone got the first ever video game soundtrack into the chart, and now League is the first ever video game to have a hit single, unless there's some dumb other technicality you can think of. The best I had is that Celeste is the name of a (very good) video game and Daphne & Celeste had some hits back in the day. The other improper debut is from Taylor Swift whose "Enchanted" has been curiously missing from the chart for weeks but now is allowed in and just squeaks into the top 50 but is certainly on its way out. Of note, apart from "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)", her only debut to last in the top 50 is the Ed Sheeran collab solely because it's the one that's on Hot Hits Australia. As well as there being songs missing from the chart which does not just include Adele, but also "SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY" and "Where Are You Now", the latter is actually the top track on HHA, the second time this year that it's been a song ARIA aren't counting. HHA added "The Thrill" back in March. It's now December and it's still on there. ON THE TOPIC OF SUSPICIOUSLY ASTROTURFED HITS, you've probably noticed for the past 4 months that there's been a cover of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac on the chart here. It coinciding with the presence of actual "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac is a mark against its need to be here, and in fact it was pretty much set to get overtaken by the original article pretty soon, although it's now seeing a boost of inauspicious activity. Last week was the ARIA Awards which for the first time in decades wasn't actually broadcast on TV but just on YouTube, which I probably would've watched if I didn't just happen to be out for the exact time slot that it was being aired. Congrats go out to Genesis Owusu for dominating the awards though. Anyway, that cover of "Dreams" was nominated for Best Dance Release which if we're looking for silver linings, means that at least it won't be nominated for Song Of The Year in 2022 because it 100% would have otherwise because we have the dumbest system in place. It didn't win the award (shout out to ya bois RÜFÜS DU SOL), but it generated controversy in the sidelines. As I noted when it entered the top 50, the vocalist on the track is Reigan Derry, who is probably familiar to you if you've been invested in Australian reality TV singing competitions in the past decade and a half, or for that matter the charts as she's had several top 50 hits over the years, though nothing with the sustained success (via playlists & radio spam lol) of "Dreams". Since she's not credited on the track, nor on any of the metadata, she's been unable to see any profit on this windfall. This all boils down to Jolyon being kind of an arsehole regarding residuals but also seemingly releasing the song through his label without her permission (the vocal track was merely a demo). When she tried to reach out to him about amending things, he blocked her on social media and proceeded to avoid mentioning her in interviews. Apparently all of this bureaucracy also meant that she wasn't even able to attend the ARIA Awards because she technically hadn't been nominated (sidebar: in general acting like an artist didn't have a hit song because they're not credited, whether on official metadata or the OCC is pretty shitty). There's been some back & forth on social media however the posts have now been deleted, and Jolyon has privated his instagram account and seemingly deleted his Twitter account, so I don't know where any of this is going but I really just want to point out the surprisingly slimy underbelly of a made-for-radio cash in on a TikTok with "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac from a year ago. On the album chart, Adele has her 3rd #1 album. One should probably not even pretend to be shocked by that. Doing so, she bests Australian music royalty Paul Kelly, who lately seems to be putting out a new album pretty much every year. This latest one is a Christmas album which includes newly written songs among a multitude of covers. It also of course features a new version of Australia's only noteworthy Christmas canon "How To Make Gravy" (I assume because "Hey Santa Claus" isn't ever going to end up on playlists), because how could it possibly be a Paul Kelly Christmas album without it. Bruce Springsteen reaches the top 10 with a live album. Plant & Krauss are back again at last and chart much higher than their first album together, which briefly reached the top 50 after its big Grammy win in 2009. Speaking of the late 2000s, Andre Rieu is back on the charts. In the world of vinyl re-releases and the like we have a return for twenty one pilots (and I guess Michael Buble also technically counts but that's not why he's here), and a debut for Frenzal Rhomb's second album from 1996 which unlike Adele's new album, debuts with a gold certification. Notably it's the only album I've ever known to have 35 secret tracks.

Should the OCC exclude old Christmas songs from the chart?
I think what you'll see over time is that the streaming demographic is slowly skewing older and older, over time more and more old songs are becoming seemingly permanent staples and only a select few new hits last the distance. As for Spice Girls vs. Little Mix, I don't think we can use bestowed reverence as a yardstick. The charts have always favoured all manner of random material that's merely a time capsule in hindsight, while classics can go through with monster sales or also minute sales. The charts are there to tell us what people are actually buying/listening to as an exact yardstick. You can spend all day mentally admiring Adele's new album but unless you're actively buying/listening to it, that's none of the chart's business. If there is a problem to be had with streaming it's that it's strongly influenced by what has found its way into people's personal playlists to get repeated plays, but at the end of the day, they are listening to that material over material that's not playlisted, and that's what the chart's here to tell us. But still you have to look at the *really* long term. Shape Of You is just shy of 5 years old, Bohemian Rhapsody is over 45 years old, and yet today on Spotify they posted roughly the same number on the global chart. I hate to subscribe to the ultra-boomer take of 'music that's still remembered half a century later is good music'*, but either Shape Of You is going to fall to the wayside and drop its margin over Queen every day for the rest of time until they trade ranks, or it'll stay above them and at some point we just have to say that its position is justified by its extended popularity (mind you Blinding Lights will probably be #1 on Spotify in early 2023). *Or for that matter, insinuating that my own childhood nostalgia invalidates that of someone younger than me, who may well be seeing recent releases as the most important music in their life, and '90s/'00s/etc music is just crappy old music.

The Weeknd is set to make history this week
Then we could use the technicality that the midweeks cover those extra 3 days after 104 weeks that makes it to 2 years :heehee:

Should the OCC exclude old Christmas songs from the chart?
Is there a valid problem with songs accumulating huge sales numbers that doesn't boil down to 'I'm mad because old music better'? If anything streaming is the great equaliser because anything (that's available online) can accumulate these long term numbers and over time*, it's actually the older songs that set the insurmountable amounts because they're *always* gaining. Bohemian Rhapsody & Wonderwall are slowly ascending the ranks of the most streamed songs ever, and they're both multiple times as old as Spotify itself. *historical pure sales numbers are so often defined by the differing market strength of different eras as is

The Weeknd is set to make history this week
If we really wanna go there, it's not 2 years until it's spent 105 weeks in the chart. 104 weeks is less than 2 years.

This has been pretty par the course of late as she scored two #1 hits last year. Though the long term is uncertain, it looks like "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" will have a better second week than either "cardigan" or "willow" and might only drop to #2 next week. Adele was initially looking like going back to #1 last week but she'll probably do it for real next week alongside her new album. Elsewhere this week Silk Sonic climb into the top 10 with "Smokin Out The Window". "Leave The Door Open" actually only got to #10 so this is a new high for the duo (though Anderson .Paak still has the cursed fact that his highest chart entry is still Macklemore's "Dance Off"). Taylor Swift takes over the chart otherwise this week except that's the funny thing. Last week I said that they may have bungled things as the vast majority of her debuts (including "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)") weren't even on the midweeks. This was largely fixed up but not quite because I still think there are a couple missing in the top 50. This week Taylor Swift scores her 9th #1 album. This has been pretty par the course of late as she scored two #1 albums last year. She leads up a pretty busy top 10 for debuts. Silk Sonic debut at #4, relatively low for Bruno Mars but relatively high for Anderson .Paak. Courtney Barnett returns to score her 4th top 5 album, and ever the slow gestators, Flight Facilities (aka the source of my avatar, aka the source of Australians have very different opinions on "Clair de lune" to you) return with their 2nd album which lands a little lower than their hit-laden debut. Kylie Minogue returns thanks to the new versions of "DISCO" out last week and Little Mix impressively maintain their top 10 streak despite being further and further out from the last time they actually had a hit here (apart from "Heartbreak Anthem"). IDLES last year scored a top 10 album though this time their new album which I admit I didn't even know was coming until the day it dropped lands at #26. The Wombats issued a 10th anniversary album of their 2nd album, which is the album that started the era in which they were undeniably more popular in Australia than in the UK, Australia just really bloody loved this and the next Wombats albums. Next week Adele will arrive at the #1 spot. I don't know what else will even make the top 50, maybe James Blunt. (Note to self: drag Jolyon Petch next week)

The Weeknd is set to make history this week
Contextually it makes sense though, Billboard's formula gives strong weight to sales that (especially in the US) have big first week hype numbers. And then on the chart itself, it was tipping over to December with heaps of Christmas songs overtaking it, Spotify Wrapped coming out that week to gear focus away from new hits, and tragically it was also the week Juice WRLD passed away and he had several songs climb ahead. If he put out the song a month back, it probably would've been a more gentle decline. There was a solid 2 months of 'this is obviously a hit but radio isn't letting it happen' of course, because why give even the illusion of free will on the charts :bounce:

Spotify & Apple Music Chart Discussion
Problem with implementing it is that it'll probably make an even bigger mess since most people probably don't actively seek out the most apropos album to stream tracks from. They'll just search it and add the first result that comes up no matter how random it is, either sticking with it forever (by adding it to their own personal playlist), or be subject to whatever fluctuations the algorithm decides for future listens. For instance, I just searched up "Lose Yourself" and the first result was neither Curtain Call nor the 8 Mile soundtrack, but the 2014 Shady Records compilation album, and I believe in the past it's also often come up with the "Just Lose It" single which in either case is just the same as not counting the song at all. Maybe to some this is a more just chart that puts cherry picking into perspective but I think it'd just make the chart impossible to interpret and meaningless (...more so).

Spotify & Apple Music Chart Discussion
Fair. It doesn't really specify that they combine both rates for the album chart so I can't feel certain on it (it seems pretty out of character/illogical to change it solely for that purpose?). Either way though the actual numbers aren't really the point of my post from before, but cheers for the clarification.

Is there any documentation on this? Not necessarily doubting but it's the first I've heard of it, what with chart companies being notoriously coy about explaining their methodologies properly and making it easy to find.

Spotify & Apple Music Chart Discussion
I mean it does, because streaming a whole album gets you the full 1/100th or 1/600th (depending on your account status) of a sale, whereas streaming a song from a playlist will only net 1/800th or 1/4800th and only if it's the 3rd-10th biggest song on the album. People hearing "Easy On Me" on a playlist are contributing 0.0000 sales to "30" because that's how it works. It's very rare that albums actually have more than the two biggest songs on playlists at a given time so it becomes pretty negligible on the whole. It might just seem like non-full listens are extremely overweighted if you're not fully grasping the sheer volume to which they outnumber start to finish album listens. Either way though, the 'idealised' version of listening to the album from start to finish is a bit gatekeeper-y for my liking, and you could also argue that someone who has listened to an album from start to finish might not necessarily have their undivided attention. Like a playlist, chucking on an album is an easy way to program yourself an hour of music with little effort, even if you totally zone out from it in lieu of something else you might be doing. But also I'll quote myself about the problems with this idea of supposed 'full album streams' (the topic at the time suggested *only* counting full streams, but the idea of bonus streaming points for it is just shifting the numbers higher so the idea still applies In general, quick fix ideas to invigorate the chart practically always come with unintended/realised side-effects. Plenty of examples just from the last 4 years of the official chart.

For sure I agree, and I think the same was true for when "25" was released in comparison to "21", but my expectations were also just partially tempered because of "25"'s roll out strategy which squeezed out more pure sales that it would otherwise have gotten given the standard roll out. So I think Adele is doing absolutely fine all things considered, I just had lower expectations I guess.

I think something that is worth noting with Adele is that "25" wasn't on Spotify when it was first released, so even in addition to it being 6 years since she last put out an album, even back then there's been a built in standard of not listening to the new Adele album on Spotify on release. I've been tempted to be inclined to say this might also cut significantly into her sales for all the people (myself included) who bought "25" because of this exclusivity, and no, these aren't contradictory statements, a sale is worth so much more than a stream, but I'm waiting to see the sales numbers themselves*. *Though even then, how it sells over the next 5 weeks probably matters just as much as the initial figure.

"Easy On Me" is still new enough that it's pretty fair they could just be waiting to gauge reaction at the moment to work out what to go with.

I have to assume it's a sample although Rita Ora featured on an entirely unrelated song called "R.I.P." a couple years ago so it wouldn't be the first #1 hit from the early 2010s to hold this ignoble distinction if so

Incredible that Adele can defy mathematics

In all fairness, it's not just Christmas music. Spotify Wrapped drops around the end of November and there's a general reminiscence around the year that was in December with publications putting out their Best of 2021 stuff too. People aren't really feasting for new music in December, not that much of it is generally released anyway.

I find it's a little varied, easier to notice the long lasting ones since they're ever-present  For instance, Gym Class Heroes blew up with "Cupid's Chokehold" earlier this year but it was only about a month and a half in the sun before dropping off back to usual business pretty much everywhere. For what it's worth, "Seventeen Going Under" actually entered the Australian Spotify chart about a week ago, a first for Sam, and it quickly got into the top 50 before getting kicked out by Taylor Swift & Silk Sonic, but its diminished daily total suggests it might already be on the way out after just a few days.

XXXTENTACION 50 47 385 01 X Ed Sheeran In bizarre news, Adele might be returning to #1 this coming week. Not for legitimate purposes but because ARIA just posted their mid-week preview and the only Taylor Swift debuts are the new versions of "Red", "We Are Never Getting Back Together", and also "I Bet You Think About Me", which would be somewhere along the lines of the 2nd, 7th & 9th highest entries she naturally would look poised for and doesn't even include the song that's being promoted by Hot Hits Australia or you know, either version of "All Too Well" which has been leading on Spotify all week. Make no mistake that if combined, "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" is absolutely a lock for #1, if not then I suspect it's a close miss, but basically if there are any Swifties reading this then by all means raise hell with ARIA before they out-parody themselves. In this week news, Post Malone gets into the top 10 after missing out with his last single, evidently The Weeknd has a knack for low top 10 debuts this year. I need not dwell on the inauspicious timing of the arrival of two new Travis Scott songs though I will point out that while Today's Top Hits on Spotify has been steadily sliding "ESCAPE PLAN" down its playlist in the past week, Hot Hits Australia, slow as they ever are, waited until after Travis Scott was somewhat complicit in the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 10 concert goers to ADD the song to their playlist which is certainly a choice. Silk Sonic arrive with their 3rd top 40 hit and it looks like "Smokin Out The Window" should be vaulting in or towards the top 10 next week. To the shock of (I assume) nobody, ABBA arrive at the #1 spot with "Voyage", their first stint at #1 since "ABBA Gold" started stuffing stockings in 1992, which I believe in some respects might make it my birthday #1 although it depends on your interpretation of which weeks line up to which days of which I don't think there's a clear answer to. So it's either that or a Simple Minds Greatest Hits and don't you forget it. Radiohead are immensely good at hitting the #2 spot on the album chart and in fact did it with both "Kid A" and "Amnesiac"...and every studio album that followed them. So for a change of pace, the new "Kid A Mnesia" collection enters at a modest #3, though being ahead of the streaming giants does lean big credence to the idea that Radiohead could easily get a #1 album if they stop choosing the worst weeks to release on. Bullet For My Valentine have been hitting the top 10 regularly since 2008, even the #1 spot in 2015 but this week they're a little lower in the top 20. Summer Walker also doesn't *quite* match the #17 peak of "Over It" but she's close on a tougher week. Hockey Dad's new live album release does not contain any transmissions to the one armed scissor, nor any hexes that were delivered spent, but it does chart slightly higher than At The Drive-In's "Relationship Of Command" and holy shit what a banger of an album that is. Local but overseas based spacebar boycotters Parcels score their first ever top 50 album this week while we have yet another Gareth Liddiard side project entering with the self-titled first album for Springtime. Snail Mail is also debuting for the first time. Next week's album chart has a bit more safe certainty on Taylor Swift debuting at #1, and she'll likely be joined by Silk Sonic, Flight Facilities, Courtney Barnett and Little Mix in the top 10. IDLES & Rod Stewart should also get in somewhere.

Really don't get why the OCC can't just make it mouse-over scroll or alt-text if they insist on their ugly all-caps format.
