Spotify & Apple Music Chart Discussion
I figured I'll bite and look into it. I took the top 50 most streamed albums last week via Spotify and checked their numbers Note: I took original editions when applicable, since this was a comment on artistic integrity and you don't typically see critical appraisal, whether present or retrospect take bonus tracks to task. Personally I think the last 22 minutes of "DONDA" have the makings of deluxe edition material but for all official intents and purposes, it is the album. I think in general what you get here is a small handful of outliers distorting the mean, as the median length is comfortably under 50 minutes, which I would consider pretty regular. Even of those outliers, we have a clearly defined double album and a triple(!) album, while Kanye West's album length is quite atypical for him as 4 of the 6 albums he's released in the last 10 years have averaged under 30 minutes. Overall though, the exceptions have always existed and I don't think there's anything to suggest a brewing trend. I would note though that I feel like less successful artists are less and less likely to get the chance to actually record albums, since they're usually big risks for labels unless they want a loss leader. These types of artists are probably less likely to make ambitiously long albums and so that dilutes the pool more so in the favour of high profile artists who may do just that. But I'd attribute that to streaming as a less lucrative platform than music stores, rather than the algorithmic nature of our listening habits shaping industry decisions. Not sure what in particular you're aiming this at but I think much of Legends Never Die was mostly done before his passing. Perhaps the most egregious sounding song "Come & Go" is not monstrously different to the early demo Juice posted when he was still alive.

You think so? In an era where more and more hit songs are running short of 3 or even 2 minutes? I think if anything the enduring popularity of "SOUR" as an 'every single track is a hit' success shows that a concise product is what a lot of people are after. I wouldn't remotely use "Red (Taylor's Version)" as an example of anything. Re-release/anniversary/what have you albums are frequently excessively long. The point of my post was to note that excess far pre-dates the algorithmic streaming age because it's not the only reason artists have done it.

Also true of the CD era where rock especially had a tendency towards bloat because 'more is better' (and who knows, maybe the RIAA's certification rules doubling for double albums was encouraging too), thus so many blockbuster albums are way too long for their own good. I've still never listened to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness because even though at least 4 of its singles are stone cold classics, the whole thing is 2 hours long and nobody's got time for that. Side note: "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" doesn't remotely feel like a slog at all. For some reason I was expecting a 5 minute guitar solo

Ehh, if you're gonna make that argument then you're severely limiting the realistic range of difference, especially since songwriters/listeners only gravitate to a very select set of chord progressions as being listenable. There's a about this phenomenon. Hayley Williams herself pretty much said that the whole thing was absurd.

They literally aren't the same chords though lol? The crediting is just to save face in the wake of Marvin Gaye's estate making a case for the worst thing to happen to music of late with their unfortunately successful lawsuit.

I've never understood this as going any deeper than 'a woman doing pop punk??!' (same thing happens when people hear Tonight Alive for the first time), the two songs sound nothing alike. Let's not lend credibility to these dumb "Blurred Lines"-esque cases.

On the other hand, this week he misses out due to digital sales. In a correct world, he'd have the only debuts this week but ARIA have mixed it up by needlessly taking an extra week to acknowledge NEIKED's "Better Days". Ed Sheeran also debuts in the top 10 with "Overpass Graffiti" as the highest of 3 top 50 debuts but admittedly it's already dipping away so he'll need some sort of break out hit to salvage what is inarguably his least impactful album release in the streaming era. "Mr. Brightside" returns for the 3rd time this year and it's worth noting that I'm still 95% sure ARIA is messing up the numbers because it's always way higher on Spotify than ARIA and there is not a single notable platform in which "Fair Trade" isn't being distinctly outperformed by it and yet. Next week we'll find out if ARIA will add to the nonsense in a rare time where I am prepared to say that Calum Scott is underrepresented on the chart because Where Are You Now seems to be missing. bbno$ also is looking to finally break into the top 50 if ARIA choose to acknowledge "edamame". To nobody's surprise, Ed Sheeran has his 5th #1 album this week. Typically speaking, the arrival of a new album from him brings the rest of his back catalogue vaulting back up the chart but that has scarcely happened this time. Mind you it's an above average week in terms of how busy it is. On the other hand, it's finally a slow enough week for Doja Cat to reach #2 for the first time, though she has the only non-#1 album in the top 10. Dami Im misses the top 10 for the first time but by all accounts is doing far better than an X Factor winner 8 years after the fact should be expected to do. Mastodon also dip back considerably after their last album reached #3. Extremely '90s Australian music moment is the return of Even, who actually get their highest ever charting album this week. The War On Drugs also take a similar decline to Mastodon after reaching the top 5 a few years ago. Spice Girls return thanks to their copious vinyl sales, and as an ominous preview to next week's chart, we see the return of Limp Bizkit, who you might recall 20 years ago in this very nation had a victim of crowd crushing during their Big Day Out set 2 decades ago. Next week I suspect it will be ABBA returning to the top of the charts, followed by assorted arrivals by Radiohead, Bullet For My Valentine, Summer Walker & Parcels.

I believe it's because 24/5 is interpreted as May 24th, 2021 which is then converted into a number in Excel's sequence of dates which start from Jan 1st, 1900. So it's the 44340th day since then.

Absolutely losing my mind over them re-including Tug of War with a safety warning rather than just...leaving it in the past. Instead Nintendo have brought back the true Prisoner's Dilemma of whether or not you destroy your hand/joystick to win 10 coins. And of course it's funny that they couldn't possibly have planned it but it also gives them a big proxy to Squid Game, which alongside Sneak n Snore, Crazy Cutters & Tackle Takedown there are quite a few

Yeah, it's such a weird vibe that grown adults feel the need to stake their superiority in what they like and to do it towards children of all people who have no idea these dumb arguments are even happening. People (children included!) who just like stuff because they like it will always be cooler than elitists.

It will probably be the last week as her sales stranglehold has slipped a bit. I initially expected Ed Sheeran could grab the top spot with either of his two current top 10 hits but his impact on Spotify has been a bit less than anticipated so we could instead get something much worse at #1. Much like 6-8 months ago, the ARIA Chart is locked into a slooooow period where we're lucky to get 2 debuts in a week that stick around. This week's top 10 entry that will be outlasted by "Heat Waves" and everything else is "Moth To A Flame", which is Swedish House Mafia's 2nd ever top 10 hit and 3rd ever top 50 hit, although they actually did manage to make the top 100 with all of their singles in their original run. Speaking of curious consistency, RÜFÜS DU SOL have had 5 top 50 hits as of this week although only one of them ever made the top 40. They've also had at least one top 50 hit from each of their albums, as 3rd single "On My Knees" was showing enough longevity after release that the album release boost slotted it in there. The one debut that will probably actually climb is Jason Derulo's, because it's not coin based. Mind you we probably should've had 4 debuts this week but ARIA forgot to count NEIKED's new song, so they'll debut next week instead, alongside probably 4 Ed Sheeran debuts. RÜFÜS DU SOL claim their 3rd #1 album. They were close to a 4th but released their last album on the week that "A Star Is Born" came out in theatres. In fact, last time they were at #1 they were ending Adele's reign with "25" for good, which just goes to show how long gestation periods are for some. The new Elton John album debuts at #2 which I can certainly say is the highest chart position ever reached by Rina Sawayama, Yo-Yo Ma & SG Lewis among others. For the 2nd time this year Lana Del Rey beats all the incumbents but is at a lower #3 position. If you're not an Australian cis straight man over the age of 30, the phrase 'said you'd never get anywhere' probably doesn't hold some significance, but if you are, I hope I got that stuck in your head for the rest of the day. I have a long standing belief that the cut off for classic rock radio in this country is around 1991, where a significant audience has refused to listen to a single song beyond that point, making the newest acceptable songs "Thunderstruck", "The Horses" and of course the most overplayed song of all time, "Better" by The Screaming Jets. Newcastle's finest released their debut album in 1991 which got as high as #2 on the album charts at the time, and this week it's back at #4 on the back of an anniversary re-issue. Duran Duran have their highest charting album in 35 years this week, while Every Time I Die also continue their very slow but upward trajectory with an all new high at #23. Charting for the first time ever is Hayley Jensen who eagle-eyed ancients like me might remember seeing on their TV screens 17 years ago as the 4th place finisher on Season 2 of Australian Idol. Just below her, Parquet Courts score their first ever top 50 position with their latest album. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released two B-Sides compilations this week though they were also released as a single package on vinyl so they may or may not have been combined under the Part II name, which if nothing else is consistent with Warner's release form that week which listed Part II first, which I noted as quite unusual at the time. Dream Theater quite often chart in the top 20 though this time they're lucky to make the top 50, so they might be pulling you under. Also Lady A are back in the charts for the first time since they awkwardly decided to change their name in solidarity with BLM only to completely show themselves when they changed it to a name already used by a person of colour and tried to sue her over it. You gotta love corporate wokeness. Anyway next week I hazard a guess that Ed Sheeran is going to debut at #1 and you'll also find the likes of Mastodon, The Spice Girls, The War On Drugs, Tori Amos, Dami Im, A$AP Rocky and Even. Something for everyone probably.

What’s the biggest Halloween song in the UK Chart
You can also subjectively debate the merits of what actually counts as a Halloween song, and how much weighting is given to how appropriate it is, given that it's highly likely the most successful example of something is not going to be the best example of it. Like you could argue that "The Hills" by The Weeknd has a tenuous enough link to count and that's a bigger hit than anything else outside of 'err actually song I hate is clearly horror because hurr hurr I'm funny'. A lot of these associations are handed to songs after the fact. Otherwise Thriller wouldn't have been released both as an album and a single in November lol.

Honestly I probably should've given it more points. As a neurodivergent I don't think there's another #1 hit (and how apt!) that better captures the joy and especially comfort in indulging the love of music as a special interest. Maybe "Come On Eileen" is a close second.

Honestly Ed Sheeran's album is a major litmus test for me with regards to big album release streaming numbers. He set a still unrivaled benchmark in 2017 but so far in 2021 we've had Olivia, Kanye & Drake pull exceedingly good numbers. If he pulls something similar it'll just prove that those album releases were huge stories but it's also possible that they're exaggerated compared to our usual standard, and Ed Sheeran with his record-breaking ways could pull off something we've never seen before even despite not having the perfect storm of success as with "÷". Yes I know I'm the only person whose interest in these stats supersedes interest in avoiding chart entropy.

I dare say that it'll stay as such next week too, potentially bumping up Dua Lipa's career weeks spent at #2 on the Singles chart to 17, which is certainly a record among non-#1 getting artists unless you subscribe to the theory that pre & post-2010 Maroon 5 are different bands. This is such an uneventful week but it is time to ring out for yet another classic 'Only on the ARIA Charts' moment. This week, Adele returns to the charts with "Rolling In The Deep" and "Someone Like You", nothing unreasonable about that but it's all the songs she didn't chart with that spark curiosity. "When We Were Young" in particular should have been her highest re-entry. The reason they weren't is because no Adele songs were allowed to return to the chart. "Rolling In The Deep" and "Someone Like You" merely got there because they've never fallen so low in sales to fall off of ARIA's survey, flawless logic honestly. There's a lot more happening on the album chart though, where Coldplay score their 7th #1 album, having hit #1 with everything except "Parachutes" and "A Head Full Of Dreams". They faced surprisingly close competition from The Beatles' vinyl re-release. Coming through in 3rd is the Fresh Prince of Arnhem Land himself Baker Boy. He's been making a name for himself in the past 4 years for his energetic performances and positive vibes while often switching between rapping in English and his native Yolngu tongue. Alongside The Kid LAROI it means we have Indigenous artists at #3 on both charts this week. The Beatles are not alone in their remastering, as Kylie Minogue also returns for the 20th anniversary of "Fever", an album which I cannot in good conscience say revived her career here because unlike the rest of the world, Australia actually rightly recognises that "Impossible Princess" rules, and also "Light Years" was very successful the year before. But it does have 4 banger singles, two of which went to #1 here. On the topic of late '90s Australian alt rock bangers, there's also a return for Spiderbait's "Ivy and the Big Apples", the band's most beloved album possibly because it's the one with "Buy Me A Pony" (the first ever Australian Hottest 100 #1) and "Calypso" (the 'sunshine on the window' song that is somehow by the same band). In a different world of re-releases, Mac Miller's most beloved mixtape "Faces" was finally given a wide release, which as a fan of Mac Miller, jazz rap and all things , I wholeheartedly endorse. The Smith Street Band's Wil Wagner may or may not be cancelled but he's here with a new live album, while Twelve Foot Ninja return to the chart for the first time in 5 years, just narrowly making the top 20 on a tough week having gone top 10 before. Young Thug scores his highest ever album chart entry this week, while Zac Brown Band are far from it, which one has to wonder if it's a result of their disastrous last album. Australian music icons Russell Morris and Rick Springfield (yes, that one) enter with a collaborative album under the name The Morris Springfield Project, while Ice Nine Kills get their first ever chart entry. The band have been around for over a decade so their name is not a Zero Escape reference sadly. Next week could be a competitive heat between Elton John, RÜFÜS DU SOL and Lana Del Rey, alongside further entries for Duran Duran, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Dream Theater.

Buzzjack's Favourite UK No 1 Single Of The 90s
Actually thought Breathe might have been my +30, with the list so small I *think* I know what it is now. Also expected it to be the first Prodigy song to drop but it's worth saying that it is an absolute monster of a hit over in my parts, where The Prodigy never had another top 20 hit, but "Breathe" was the longest running top 10 hit of all time until like 2019!

Wait did I really give Fastlove points? It's a fine song but I must have been super delirious and not reading it correctly if so.
