  1. Contextually it makes sense though, Billboard's formula gives strong weight to sales that (especially in the US) have big first week hype numbers. And then on the chart itself, it was tipping over to December with heaps of Christmas songs overtaking it, Spotify Wrapped coming out that week to gear focus away from new hits, and tragically it was also the week Juice WRLD passed away and he had several songs climb ahead. If he put out the song a month back, it probably would've been a more gentle decline. There was a solid 2 months of 'this is obviously a hit but radio isn't letting it happen' of course, because why give even the illusion of free will on the charts :bounce:
  2. Problem with implementing it is that it'll probably make an even bigger mess since most people probably don't actively seek out the most apropos album to stream tracks from. They'll just search it and add the first result that comes up no matter how random it is, either sticking with it forever (by adding it to their own personal playlist), or be subject to whatever fluctuations the algorithm decides for future listens. For instance, I just searched up "Lose Yourself" and the first result was neither Curtain Call nor the 8 Mile soundtrack, but the 2014 Shady Records compilation album, and I believe in the past it's also often come up with the "Just Lose It" single which in either case is just the same as not counting the song at all. Maybe to some this is a more just chart that puts cherry picking into perspective but I think it'd just make the chart impossible to interpret and meaningless (...more so).
  3. Fair. It doesn't really specify that they combine both rates for the album chart so I can't feel certain on it (it seems pretty out of character/illogical to change it solely for that purpose?). Either way though the actual numbers aren't really the point of my post from before, but cheers for the clarification.
  4. Is there any documentation on this? Not necessarily doubting but it's the first I've heard of it, what with chart companies being notoriously coy about explaining their methodologies properly and making it easy to find.
  5. I mean it does, because streaming a whole album gets you the full 1/100th or 1/600th (depending on your account status) of a sale, whereas streaming a song from a playlist will only net 1/800th or 1/4800th and only if it's the 3rd-10th biggest song on the album. People hearing "Easy On Me" on a playlist are contributing 0.0000 sales to "30" because that's how it works. It's very rare that albums actually have more than the two biggest songs on playlists at a given time so it becomes pretty negligible on the whole. It might just seem like non-full listens are extremely overweighted if you're not fully grasping the sheer volume to which they outnumber start to finish album listens. Either way though, the 'idealised' version of listening to the album from start to finish is a bit gatekeeper-y for my liking, and you could also argue that someone who has listened to an album from start to finish might not necessarily have their undivided attention. Like a playlist, chucking on an album is an easy way to program yourself an hour of music with little effort, even if you totally zone out from it in lieu of something else you might be doing. But also I'll quote myself about the problems with this idea of supposed 'full album streams' (the topic at the time suggested *only* counting full streams, but the idea of bonus streaming points for it is just shifting the numbers higher so the idea still applies In general, quick fix ideas to invigorate the chart practically always come with unintended/realised side-effects. Plenty of examples just from the last 4 years of the official chart.
  6. For sure I agree, and I think the same was true for when "25" was released in comparison to "21", but my expectations were also just partially tempered because of "25"'s roll out strategy which squeezed out more pure sales that it would otherwise have gotten given the standard roll out. So I think Adele is doing absolutely fine all things considered, I just had lower expectations I guess.
  7. I think something that is worth noting with Adele is that "25" wasn't on Spotify when it was first released, so even in addition to it being 6 years since she last put out an album, even back then there's been a built in standard of not listening to the new Adele album on Spotify on release. I've been tempted to be inclined to say this might also cut significantly into her sales for all the people (myself included) who bought "25" because of this exclusivity, and no, these aren't contradictory statements, a sale is worth so much more than a stream, but I'm waiting to see the sales numbers themselves*. *Though even then, how it sells over the next 5 weeks probably matters just as much as the initial figure.
  8. "Easy On Me" is still new enough that it's pretty fair they could just be waiting to gauge reaction at the moment to work out what to go with.
  9. I have to assume it's a sample although Rita Ora featured on an entirely unrelated song called "R.I.P." a couple years ago so it wouldn't be the first #1 hit from the early 2010s to hold this ignoble distinction if so
  10. Incredible that Adele can defy mathematics
  11. In all fairness, it's not just Christmas music. Spotify Wrapped drops around the end of November and there's a general reminiscence around the year that was in December with publications putting out their Best of 2021 stuff too. People aren't really feasting for new music in December, not that much of it is generally released anyway.
  12. I find it's a little varied, easier to notice the long lasting ones since they're ever-present  For instance, Gym Class Heroes blew up with "Cupid's Chokehold" earlier this year but it was only about a month and a half in the sun before dropping off back to usual business pretty much everywhere. For what it's worth, "Seventeen Going Under" actually entered the Australian Spotify chart about a week ago, a first for Sam, and it quickly got into the top 50 before getting kicked out by Taylor Swift & Silk Sonic, but its diminished daily total suggests it might already be on the way out after just a few days.

XXXTENTACION 50 47 385 01 X Ed Sheeran In bizarre news, Adele might be returning to #1 this coming week. Not for legitimate purposes but because ARIA just posted their mid-week preview and the only Taylor Swift debuts are the new versions of "Red", "We Are Never Getting Back Together", and also "I Bet You Think About Me", which would be somewhere along the lines of the 2nd, 7th & 9th highest entries she naturally would look poised for and doesn't even include the song that's being promoted by Hot Hits Australia or you know, either version of "All Too Well" which has been leading on Spotify all week. Make no mistake that if combined, "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" is absolutely a lock for #1, if not then I suspect it's a close miss, but basically if there are any Swifties reading this then by all means raise hell with ARIA before they out-parody themselves. In this week news, Post Malone gets into the top 10 after missing out with his last single, evidently The Weeknd has a knack for low top 10 debuts this year. I need not dwell on the inauspicious timing of the arrival of two new Travis Scott songs though I will point out that while Today's Top Hits on Spotify has been steadily sliding "ESCAPE PLAN" down its playlist in the past week, Hot Hits Australia, slow as they ever are, waited until after Travis Scott was somewhat complicit in the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 10 concert goers to ADD the song to their playlist which is certainly a choice. Silk Sonic arrive with their 3rd top 40 hit and it looks like "Smokin Out The Window" should be vaulting in or towards the top 10 next week. To the shock of (I assume) nobody, ABBA arrive at the #1 spot with "Voyage", their first stint at #1 since "ABBA Gold" started stuffing stockings in 1992, which I believe in some respects might make it my birthday #1 although it depends on your interpretation of which weeks line up to which days of which I don't think there's a clear answer to. So it's either that or a Simple Minds Greatest Hits and don't you forget it. Radiohead are immensely good at hitting the #2 spot on the album chart and in fact did it with both "Kid A" and "Amnesiac"...and every studio album that followed them. So for a change of pace, the new "Kid A Mnesia" collection enters at a modest #3, though being ahead of the streaming giants does lean big credence to the idea that Radiohead could easily get a #1 album if they stop choosing the worst weeks to release on. Bullet For My Valentine have been hitting the top 10 regularly since 2008, even the #1 spot in 2015 but this week they're a little lower in the top 20. Summer Walker also doesn't *quite* match the #17 peak of "Over It" but she's close on a tougher week. Hockey Dad's new live album release does not contain any transmissions to the one armed scissor, nor any hexes that were delivered spent, but it does chart slightly higher than At The Drive-In's "Relationship Of Command" and holy shit what a banger of an album that is. Local but overseas based spacebar boycotters Parcels score their first ever top 50 album this week while we have yet another Gareth Liddiard side project entering with the self-titled first album for Springtime. Snail Mail is also debuting for the first time. Next week's album chart has a bit more safe certainty on Taylor Swift debuting at #1, and she'll likely be joined by Silk Sonic, Flight Facilities, Courtney Barnett and Little Mix in the top 10. IDLES & Rod Stewart should also get in somewhere.
  14. I'll try to give this a go but I'll definitely need to do some research first.
  15. Really don't get why the OCC can't just make it mouse-over scroll or alt-text if they insist on their ugly all-caps format.
  16. Yep, you'll see no disagreement from me on that front.
  17. I figured I'll bite and look into it. I took the top 50 most streamed albums last week via Spotify and checked their numbers Note: I took original editions when applicable, since this was a comment on artistic integrity and you don't typically see critical appraisal, whether present or retrospect take bonus tracks to task. Personally I think the last 22 minutes of "DONDA" have the makings of deluxe edition material but for all official intents and purposes, it is the album. I think in general what you get here is a small handful of outliers distorting the mean, as the median length is comfortably under 50 minutes, which I would consider pretty regular. Even of those outliers, we have a clearly defined double album and a triple(!) album, while Kanye West's album length is quite atypical for him as 4 of the 6 albums he's released in the last 10 years have averaged under 30 minutes. Overall though, the exceptions have always existed and I don't think there's anything to suggest a brewing trend. I would note though that I feel like less successful artists are less and less likely to get the chance to actually record albums, since they're usually big risks for labels unless they want a loss leader. These types of artists are probably less likely to make ambitiously long albums and so that dilutes the pool more so in the favour of high profile artists who may do just that. But I'd attribute that to streaming as a less lucrative platform than music stores, rather than the algorithmic nature of our listening habits shaping industry decisions. Not sure what in particular you're aiming this at but I think much of Legends Never Die was mostly done before his passing. Perhaps the most egregious sounding song "Come & Go" is not monstrously different to the early demo Juice posted when he was still alive.
  18. You think so? In an era where more and more hit songs are running short of 3 or even 2 minutes? I think if anything the enduring popularity of "SOUR" as an 'every single track is a hit' success shows that a concise product is what a lot of people are after. I wouldn't remotely use "Red (Taylor's Version)" as an example of anything. Re-release/anniversary/what have you albums are frequently excessively long. The point of my post was to note that excess far pre-dates the algorithmic streaming age because it's not the only reason artists have done it.
  19. Dircadirca posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
+5 Ed Sheeran - Overpass Graffiti +4 Adele - Easy On Me +3 THE ANXIETY - Meet Me At Our Spot (verses are tragically bad, among the worst moments in any of these 10 songs tho) +2 CKay - love nwantiti (ah ah ah) +1 Central Cee - Obsessed With You -1 Ed Sheeran - Shivers -2 JOUT COUT - OUT OUT -3 Ed Sheeran - Bad Habits -4 I'd rather go and pick some of those wild strawberries -5 Let the record show that Cold Heart is infinitely worse but I refuse to end this streak
  20. Also true of the CD era where rock especially had a tendency towards bloat because 'more is better' (and who knows, maybe the RIAA's certification rules doubling for double albums was encouraging too), thus so many blockbuster albums are way too long for their own good. I've still never listened to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness because even though at least 4 of its singles are stone cold classics, the whole thing is 2 hours long and nobody's got time for that. Side note: "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" doesn't remotely feel like a slog at all. For some reason I was expecting a 5 minute guitar solo
  21. Ehh, if you're gonna make that argument then you're severely limiting the realistic range of difference, especially since songwriters/listeners only gravitate to a very select set of chord progressions as being listenable. There's a about this phenomenon. Hayley Williams herself pretty much said that the whole thing was absurd.
  22. They literally aren't the same chords though lol? The crediting is just to save face in the wake of Marvin Gaye's estate making a case for the worst thing to happen to music of late with their unfortunately successful lawsuit.
  23. I've never understood this as going any deeper than 'a woman doing pop punk??!' (same thing happens when people hear Tonight Alive for the first time), the two songs sound nothing alike. Let's not lend credibility to these dumb "Blurred Lines"-esque cases.

On the other hand, this week he misses out due to digital sales. In a correct world, he'd have the only debuts this week but ARIA have mixed it up by needlessly taking an extra week to acknowledge NEIKED's "Better Days". Ed Sheeran also debuts in the top 10 with "Overpass Graffiti" as the highest of 3 top 50 debuts but admittedly it's already dipping away so he'll need some sort of break out hit to salvage what is inarguably his least impactful album release in the streaming era. "Mr. Brightside" returns for the 3rd time this year and it's worth noting that I'm still 95% sure ARIA is messing up the numbers because it's always way higher on Spotify than ARIA and there is not a single notable platform in which "Fair Trade" isn't being distinctly outperformed by it and yet. Next week we'll find out if ARIA will add to the nonsense in a rare time where I am prepared to say that Calum Scott is underrepresented on the chart because Where Are You Now seems to be missing. bbno$ also is looking to finally break into the top 50 if ARIA choose to acknowledge "edamame". To nobody's surprise, Ed Sheeran has his 5th #1 album this week. Typically speaking, the arrival of a new album from him brings the rest of his back catalogue vaulting back up the chart but that has scarcely happened this time. Mind you it's an above average week in terms of how busy it is. On the other hand, it's finally a slow enough week for Doja Cat to reach #2 for the first time, though she has the only non-#1 album in the top 10. Dami Im misses the top 10 for the first time but by all accounts is doing far better than an X Factor winner 8 years after the fact should be expected to do. Mastodon also dip back considerably after their last album reached #3. Extremely '90s Australian music moment is the return of Even, who actually get their highest ever charting album this week. The War On Drugs also take a similar decline to Mastodon after reaching the top 5 a few years ago. Spice Girls return thanks to their copious vinyl sales, and as an ominous preview to next week's chart, we see the return of Limp Bizkit, who you might recall 20 years ago in this very nation had a victim of crowd crushing during their Big Day Out set 2 decades ago. Next week I suspect it will be ABBA returning to the top of the charts, followed by assorted arrivals by Radiohead, Bullet For My Valentine, Summer Walker & Parcels.
  25. I believe it's because 24/5 is interpreted as May 24th, 2021 which is then converted into a number in Excel's sequence of dates which start from Jan 1st, 1900. So it's the 44340th day since then.
