Yeah, basically my point was that it's a case where store front promotion (and maybe early eager buyers) led people to buy a version that given the choice, they'd be less likely to go for. I also remember when Amy Winehouse died, one of her solo acoustic/live(?) versions of Valerie was the one that vaulted up the iTunes chart here, not the one with Mark Ronson, since she wasn't credited on it at the time and searching 'amy winehouse valerie' wasn't making it show up.

[This post all based on AU iTunes experience though I imagine UK iTunes is similar] I assume it's because (intentionally or not) that's the one they've promoted on the front page, which has driven enough impulse buys that it's normalised that version. With that big sales lead, it's also the one that turns up first in the search results (I had to expand the results to see the explicit one). For a counter example, I remember when Enrique's "Tonight" had the clean & explicit versions, the explicit one shot up first with the clean version trailing far behind. The moment it dropped out of the iTunes top 10 (and thus out of display on the front page, the explicit plummeted, and not long after the clean version was selling better than it.

Guy Sebastian 49 39 06 01 MAINSTREAM SELLOUT Machine Gun Kelly 50 56 234 01 REPUTATION Taylor Swift Harry gets a 3rd week at #1 but next week should be quite interesting. Jack Harlow has his album out and yet at the same time, it's so close between the two that it's anyone's game at this stage. There might even be further competition down the line from Lizzo who has vaulted from not making the chart to going straight into the top 20. "About Damn Time" will very likely become her highest charting single ever next week as it's comfortably ensconced in the Spotify top 3 at the moment. Future may also attempt a slight climb for the next highest debut of the week "WAIT FOR U" which in typical playlist/Australia fashion, is gaining on performance from the start of the week even though I think he peaked at some point last week. To date his only top 10 hit is "Way 2 Sexy" so he's never had a lead artist top 10 and this doesn't look like it'll quite get there either. Despite never actually ever going away, Justin Bieber returns this week although also looks like "Honest" will be leaving quite quickly. Less certain is Benson Boone who will attempt to grab some stability while he can. "In The Stars" is his first ever top 50 hit after "GHOST TOWN" looked like it was going to do it last year but got caught in the Taylor Swift shuffle and never recovered. Australia seems especially interested in the cringe sequel to GAYLE's cringe, with Leah Kate vaulting up the chart quite fast (idk maybe because Heath Ledger is Australian, let's go with that). Then with extra thanks to ARIA adding YouTube views recently, PSY is able to sneak onto the top 50 for the first time since "Gentleman" in 2013. On the album chart, Future has had a very shaky chart history over the years. Previously he made the top 5 with his Drake collaboration in 2015, while most of his own albums have hovered around 20 & 30. So relatively out of nowhere, his latest album rockets him to the top spot for the very first time. I can't imagine Rammstein were far off either, but they do score their highest ever charting album this week by making it to #3. Their self-titled in 2019 got them to #5 previously. Mildlife scored a top 10 debut in 2020 and now return with a live album. Norah Jones has a vinyl re-issue for the 20th anniversary of her very successful album and also The Voice Australia is still going for all your otherwise unprompted rebounds.

Looks like it'll comfortably stay there for now too unless something vaults out of nowhere. The Kid LAROI debuts at #4 which I imagine was very close to #3 which notably ends the unbroken 41 week reign of "STAY" as the highest Australian song on the chart. That's basically it this week. Album chart is a bit busier though, which results in Northlane scoring their 2nd #1 album. They last hit #1 in 2015 which incidentally was when Daniel Johns released his first solo album (he's the guy from Silverchair if it's not obvious), which also peaked at #2 (being Hillsong ). Also on the topic of Australian metalcore or thereabouts, there's a top 10 debut for Ocean Grove. Pusha T arrives at #11, just like he did in 2018, just ahead of a revival for Flight Facilities courtesy of a vinyl re-release. Fontaines D.C. arrive just ahead of Jack White who belatedly debuts with physical sales added. Then we've got peak psychedelic garage core with Psychedelic Porn Crumpets & King Gizzard.

I dunno I think in any case it's pretty elitist to suggest that playlist streaming is worth less, like you have to prove you're a real music fan because you manually queue up your music listening plan every day. People aren't going to just passively listen to a playlist if they don't enjoy it.
  8. ^Furthermore, he took that image, scrubbed the artist's name from it and posted it without credit since taking things and claiming them as his own is his whole brand. Well that and liking terrible transphobic joke(s?), so I suppose we get to look forward to a much more lenient policy on that.

  10. Looking at the Indie Singles chart, in an SCR world it lands between Balling (#37) and Still Sleepless (#46), I'm kind of surprised ACR knocks it so far down! Meanwhile J. Cole doesn't even register on the hip-hop top 40 chart where he'd need to be top 20 to make it officially, but maybe the OCC have just overlooked him in categorising it
  11. Anyone know about roughly how high it'd need to get until it could chart officially? Guessing it's a fair way off given "505" still hasn't re-entered but then maybe it's doing better elsewhere.

His descent has slowed down a lot but not enough to stop Harry from probably getting back to #1 next week. Side note, isn't it interesting that we had back to back #1 debuts by artists who refer to themselves in the 3rd person in song, yes I am doing anything to avoid talking about the actual non-event chart this week where for the first time the top 15 is unchanged. Updates to Hot Hits Australia in the past week will change that but I don't like to draw attention to Dr. Luke music. On the other hand there's also a new Kid LAROI song that's aiming to enter in the top 5. All we got this week was a particularly egregious case of the boomers winning with Easter streams and just one low top 50 debut from Lauren-Spencer Smith. She hasn't got the Hot Hits slot yet but tonight she jumped into the Spotify top 40 for the first time so maybe there's a stable hit in the running here. "Dance Monkey"'s re-entry this week after a 9 month absence means that it finally reaches 100 weeks in the top 50, the 3rd song to do so. On that note, The Weeknd is 3 weeks away from matching Lewis Capaldi's tenure of 124 weeks. In 'new' hit news, "Sweater Weather" and "Another Love" both entered the Spotify top 50 for the first time tonight. ARIA so far has not been tracking either song but maybe they'll change their tune if they get high enough. These US & UK hits have not previously charted here. Vinyl reigns supreme once more. It gets Dua Lipa to return to #1 for a 3rd non-consecutive week which is particularly interesting because the album did not debut at #1 yet has had 3 separate stints all in different calendar years. Tyler, The Creator also has his own vinyl bump for his latest album which gets it back into the top 10. Just below is the only new entry of the week from Kirsty Lee Akers. She does not sing on "Energy" by Stace Cadet but this is the local country singer's highest charting album to date. This week is also the first time ever that "good kid, m.A.A.d city" has ever spent 2 weeks in a row in the top 50.

  14. I haven't seen anyone mention this, but I wonder if Spotify's update (I think a couple of months ago) has had a major effect on artists promoting new singles. You used to get an artist's discography of singles/albums listed in chronological order under their top 5/10 by default, putting the newest stuff in the forefront, but now that's stuck behind fiddly tabs with the default being 'Popular releases'. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who ended up listening to the newest release did so out of convenience and they're now listening to their established material instead. It's a subtle change that takes away some of the former prominence and attention from new singles.

CITY Kendrick Lamar For the second week in a row we have a #1 debut on the singles chart. I believe the last time this has happened was in 2016 with Katy Perry's "Rise" and Major Lazer's "Cold Water", perhaps these two will have more longevity than the former. The new one though comes from Jack Harlow giving him his first ever #1 single, which interpolates Fergie's #2 hit "Glamorous". He pulls through with an even bigger opening week than Harry but as a caveat is coming with a bigger drop. I expect Jack will hold the #1 spot this week but it's so close that I could see paid/free streaming ratios perhaps swaying the outcome the other way. Harry is actually starting to offset the initial declines and as I write this I've discovered that "As It Was" got more streams yesterday than it did the same day last week, so how about that. This ends up being unlucky for Camila Cabello who is hoisted a #11 peak for now with "Bam Bam". In what can only be considered a funny coincidence, WILLOW climbs into the top 50 this week with one of her older tracks "Wait A Minute!", which actually gave a run for the chart a couple years ago but didn't quite get there. This time around the momentum is running stronger so now we'll wait to see if it gets playlist backing. Earlier this year I noted that Huskii did a very rare feat of debuting at #1 with his debut album having never made the ARIA Chart before that in any capacity, which had not happened since 2009. Not to take anything away from that achievement but it's actually happened again this week with Wet Leg. The group's rise to popularity makes me extremely nostalgic for the late 2000s when these sorts of bands would just pop up out of nowhere and take the spotlight as if they've always been there. It's very rare nowadays that an international group does it but hey it sure worked. "Chaise Longue" did make triple j's Hottest 100 for 2021 at #45 earlier this year too. On the topic of Australian artists gaining fervour with their debut, look no further than Short Stack who debuted at #1 with their debut album in 2009 (gosh that year is coming up a lot). They've been largely absent for a while so this is their first new album since 2015, and it keeps up their record with 4/4 top 10 debuts. Tool return to the chart thanks to a vinyl release of their latest album, while Camila Cabello also debuts a decent bit lower than she's used to. Mind you she still beats Father John Misty who I'm surprised to not even see in the top 50 at all given how well he did in the UK. Jack Harlow returns with his first album to the tune of a slight new peak.

Harry Styles gets his 2nd #1 (or 3rd if you want to count "Drag Me Down") with "As It Was", which is also the 2nd time he's knocked off a long running #1. Once again it looks like he'll probably be replaced within a week as Jack Harlow has taken his huge opening week and surpassed it, with "First Class" scoring comfortably the highest ever Spotify debut ever in Australia. We have some more new entries this week too, with Shawn Mendes fairing better than he has been lately with "When You're Gone", although it's already not certain if he's staying stable with it. Lil Tjay also debuts with a song that Hot Hits Australia are not interested in acknowledging (59 weeks of "The Thrill" btw). He'll probably drop off pretty fast. Not yet certain for Dean Lewis who is doing better than his 2021 material by entering the top 40 but is also already seeing some shaky streaming performance. Red Hot Chili Peppers have their 7th #1 album, I am bereft of interesting things to say about it. Also in the top 10 this week is Confidence Man who've jumped up quite a bit from their first album. That's swapping with Meshuggah who get their 3rd top 50 album but it's quite a way down from when they reached the top 10 in 2016.
  19. Not quite as immediate but I think "Old Town Road" and the entire career of Lil Nas X is worth consideration in that regard.
  20. Yeah, compared to other countries in the Anglosphere, American rappers tend to always do a bit worse in the UK, this includes every Jack Harlow song to date

Given that the original is reliably charting every day in the US, Canada, Australia & New Zealand and the remix spent 1 day in a few charts, I imagine the UK probably is streaming the original more.

It'll have a hard time making it 12 weeks as it were, since just half a week's tracking has pretty much guaranteed Harry Styles a week at #1 by a huge margin. It remains to be seen how long he maintains it but I'd be surprised if he were down so soon. Otherwise the top 10 is fairly stagnant this week. Dave has managed the first 2022 song to spent two weeks in the top 10 but in actually deranged Spotify Australia moments, they've shoved "Starlight" to the very bottom of the Hot Hits playlist, implying that they're ready to dump it soon while still promoting fresh new singles like "Heat Waves", "Kiss Me More", "BED", and of course we're about to hit week 58 of Wiz Khalifa's "The Thrill" which is still not being acknowledged on the ARIA Chart. Speaking of not being acknowledged by ARIA, last week that was the case for the cover of "Tom's Diner" which arrives in the top 20, further sating Australia's fascination for dogshit covers. The DNA remix of Suzanne Vega's original reached #8 back in the day. I think it goes without saying that Australia loves Foo Fighters. They were just in the country in fact and now with the passing of Taylor Hawkins they score a big new peak for "Everlong" (which he didn't actually play on), originally a #45 debut and peaker back in 1997. We now tragically have 3 different Dr. Luke songs in the top 50. Tate McRae scores a big debut for "chaotic" though it looks to be dropping quickly out of the chart next week. Most peculiar this week is the arrival of J. Cole's "No Role Modelz", which has spent much of the last year within the top 100 slowly crawling up the chart, last week catching a big break by jumping into the Spotify top 50. It is so barely in the ARIA top 50 that I can actually acknowledge that the real reason it got over the line this week is because of the song's multiple references to Will Smith & The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It's a bit touch & go at the moment so I can't say it's hugely likely to stay in the top 50 next week. Machine Gun Kelly gets his first #1 in Australia this week. 2020's "Tickets To My Downfall" debuted and peaked at #2 behind Joji. This time around though he bests the otherwise sure bet of Michael Buble, who admittedly has not hit #1 since 2013 and all his albums since then have reached #2. Xavier Rudd scores his 7th top 10 album, 4 of which have peaked at #6. Placebo score their 4th top 10 album, having gotten there with every album since "Meds", which is their highest charter at #4. After a reasonable (though not quite Placebo-lengthed) gap, Camp Cope return with their 3rd album which doesn't quite hit the top 10 like its predecessor, an album I commend very highly though I haven't listened to this new one yet. Denzel Curry is right behind them at #12 which is his highest chart position to date. Aldous Harding also scores her first top 50 album here.
