"APT." returns to #1 for a 12th week at the top. I suspect it was very close because "luther" held a solid lead over it all week on Spotify, but lacks the sales to combine with that. It's possible that "HUMBLE." also missed out on #1 due to sales, it's been a hot minute, but that also did get to #1 on Spotify. Tate McRae debuts many songs in the chart this week, and gets "Sports car" just a little bit higher than before in the process. She's also responsible for kicking out the last Australian song in the top 50, but she brings The Kid LAROI in with her so it balances out I guess. Billie Eilish's Australian tour isn't quite lighting up the chart like I expected, or at least it can't fight off the inevitable decline for a song that's been sitting around the top 5 for 9 months now. With that in mind, "APT." looks most likely to stay at #1 next week. Tate McRae scores her first ever #1 album. Last time she was so close, debuting behind incumbent Taylor Swift, but this week she achieves the what. Australian music does make it over to the album chart this week though. For once it's also a relatively new act. Rum Jungle charting for the first time ever and landing in the top 10 to boot. That puts them ahead of streaming stalwart and occasional bad opinion haver Ziggy Alberts. Sam Fender makes some inroads as well. His last album just snuck into the top 50, now he's sneaking into the top 20. A Day To Remember once had a #1 album, but they've also had a history of dodgy release patterns. I remember years ago when they charted in the top 100 on one or two days of sales, and then had a stunted climb into the top 50 the week after. This time they're charting low just on physical sales with an album that's not out on streaming just yet, guess only Adele can pull it off. In case you were wondering, that's not a new peak for Pitbull but maybe he gets there next week.
  2. Going to out myself as responsible for this sort of thing: I don't listen to new music on Saturdays generally. I do that on the Friday, and won't put new stuff into rotation until after the weekend. If we want to subscribe to the idea of New Music Friday as a concept, you're inevitably going to see declines like this, even for the biggest of hits. "As It Was" by Harry Styles remained at #1 but declined from 1.2 million streams to 0.8 million streams in a single Saturday when it first came out, a very similar decline percentage-wise to Benson going #61->#201 in a single day.

Not quite that low I think. #100 on sales in Australia is usually around 30-40 a week so in the UK it might be 60-100. Definitely a lot of ties though.
  4. Alright so to look further at it, something I find myself habitually doing is sorting the kworb chart by days charting and see how old the 45th-ish (about as much as fits on my monitor) newest song is on the chart. When we're in real dire straits, I've seen the Australian one get to around 100 days charting (maybe 80 in the UK). Currently in the UK it's 35 which is really good. A lot of Tate McRae album tracks but they're still new songs people are listening to whatever way you look at it. Anyway, I did make that graph I wanted to make I couldn't go back further because my old tweets wouldn't load, but the chart starts in February 2023 and ends at present. I've been keeping track of this very specific stat on a weekly basis for several years now because it fascinates me and is a solid barometer on the state of new music. I remember it was a big moment around 2019/2020 when it started to go over 100 for the first time, and it seemed the trend would keep up, but it just hasn't. This week, we nearly hit the lowest number of 'old' songs in the chart in about 6 years! The only time it was ever lower was last year when Taylor Swift (and to a lesser extent Billie Eilish) was taking up pristine real estate with her new album for several weeks. Yes, this isn't the UK chart although I do think it follows a very similar pattern. Yes, it's not everyone's definition of new music, but I think the core principle, that less of the chart is made up of oldies listened to by people will no interest in new music, is more important to the perpetuation of new music than whether or not some songs that may well take off in the weeks to come have charged right out the gate to do so.
  5. There's a graph I want to make (it'll take a while), but I feel like new music is really thriving lately?? I've been surprised at the rate in which some immovable objects have been getting booted down the charts. Also those Tate McRae & Sam Fender albums that came out only a week ago have done very well I think. If you need a constant IV drip of new hits every single week, or think a song is old news because it's a couple of months old, you're gonna run into this issue, but I'm not seeing it right now.

People are free to do that if they want, but I fall on the other side of it. Records are made to be broken. I think too many people cling to records of yesteryear and invent excuses to stop it from actually counting when they are broken. They want the prestige of an 'all time' record, but they only want the 'all time' to include the time period that's convenient to them. They want everyone else to acknowledge the achievements and prestige accomplished by those that they're interested, but they won't return the favour the other way around. They're not actually interested in the records as a concept, but the fact that the records they choose to consider important help embolden their perspective. Once someone does that, it's no surprise that they'll cling onto it in perpetuity. What should be a celebration of accomplishment and intrigue just turns into more generational superiority wars. It sure is convenient that the people who complain about the nature of the charts nowadays seem to have a strong Venn diagram overlap with the people who complain about the quality of the music nowadays. The two shouldn't be linked, and yet one view seems to galvanise the other.

If we're calling hip-hop sales into question, then don't forget that "4X4" by Travis Scott is probably the best selling single of the year in America, and maybe even globally(?) by a country mile. Comparing sales numbers & streaming often gets into territory akin to the millionaire vs. billionaire (ie the literal magnitudes of difference) shock realisation. If we were given the iTunes chart in the same way as the Spotify chart, the general insignificance of it would be more blatantly highlighted. Really though, comparing eras, getting into the kinds of stan wars that entails, it's just a fool's gambit. Different eras are more conducive to different kinds of milestones and achievements, and those who are holding onto the ones of the past will move the goal posts anyway. 15 years ago digital sales were considered cheating by some, the idea that infinite shelf-life could (and did) produce higher sales figures than had ever been achieved before. When sales are held up as the standard even now, the people doing so generally choose to ignore how much of it is boosted through double-triple purchasing, or rather just prefer to sweep it under the rug in the long term. That's ignoring how incongruous it is to compare different eras with drastically different populations (there are 2.5x as many people in the world now than during the height of Beatlemania), different accessibility, and different lifestyles that cultivate different levels of interest. I'll be the first to point out the various shortcomings & issues with the collation of streams, and the way most pundits tend to interpret it, but I think it's very good that we now have a very wide audience from which to cast this net. Leaving everything in charge of just the people who have disposable income is not going to survey the population in a particularly useful way when most revenue comes elsewhere. Signed a person who still does purchase everything I listen to.
  8. Reckon it's still banking via its early streaming success. When you combine both versions, it's not even making Kendrick's top 40 on daily global Spotify streams (same with the Maroon 5 track), so you have to figure it's destined to just slip away as the years go by.
  9. Step 1: Pick a chart Step 2: Click on the earliest possible year that has a bar (in this case 2018) Step 3: Mouse over a date on the calender that has a circle, and click an available snapshot Step 4: Bear with the loading screen Step 5: Success, I believe.
  10. Always with the binaries. Her last album debuted at #2 in the US & Aus, and #6 in the UK. That's a fanbase.

Speaking of which, he dropped a new album on us and then left the country pre-maturely without finishing his tour. I'm trying to catch up on my usual weekly business so I'm not going to say too much here, just that "luther" or "APT." will probably be #1 next week. Also Skrillex's egregious crediting on "HUMBLE." will probably survive the heat death of the universe.

In what must have been a reasonably close call, "Not Like Us" ascends to the top spot after having previously peaked at #5 in 2024. We found out that it merely had the same peak as "The Days" by Chrystal and took that personally. This is the sort of impact that's never been experience from a Super Bowl half-time show. I will shout out Rihanna's "We Found Love" for landing some very impressive longevity after the fact, but this is something else. The big question is what will happen next week. "Not Like Us" holds a strong start, but "luther" is making some ground too, and will attempt to improve its #3 peak position, or at least make it feel like less of a fluke than it was last year. In the midst of this, something I wasn't sure might ever happen is that Chappell Roan's highest song on the chart isn't "Good Luck, Babe!", as "Pink Pony Club" overtakes it en route to becoming her second top 10 hit. Alongside all of this, Lady Gaga has the biggest climb of the week with "Abracadabra", although it'll need a jolt somewhere to stop it from going right back down next week. Alex Warren has the highest debut of the week which is also his second top 50 hit in a quick burst. It was not a good week for Australian music as "Somedays" and "Riptide" both dropped out, we'd have nothing across both charts if not for Dom Dolla. We must raise the 🚨 NEW AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON 🚨 once more for "Dreamin", which will hope to grab more weeks in the top 50 but looks like having a "Rhyme Dust" kind of trajectory. The other day (or months ago if you're up to date on syndication) on Jeopardy! all three contestants names started with the letter D and Ken said something like 'good luck to the D's', coincidentally (only for me), we have a very D-infused debut, which is also Daya's first top 50 hit since 2016. Once again, the relatively recent addition of YouTube streams to the ARIA Chart is beneficial to members of BLACKPINK, as LISA scores a top 50 hit that probably wouldn't have gotten there otherwise. Kendrick Lamar returns for a second week at #1 for "GNX". You might think 'Oh, that's interesting, the same artist is #1 with a single that's not on the album they're at #1 with'. It definitely doesn't happen very often, but it's not even been a year since Taylor Swift did the same thing with "Cruel Summer" and "Midnights". Incidentally, "Midnights" falls out of the top 50 for the first time ever this week. It's not all bad news for her though, she has the highest debut with "Lover (Live From Paris)". Dream Theatre score an 8th top 50 album, a touch higher than their last one that only made #42. It's not super common we get an album climbing into the top 50, but Doechii's gone and done that this week. I also just have to remind everyone that it's made incredibly funny that "Not Like Us" is #1 on the charts because Drake spent that very week touring Australia. He doesn't have any singles chart entries to show for it, but does return with "Take Care" and "Views", they're sitting right next to "DAMN.". Speaking of Australian tours, Billie Eilish plays her first show here tonight and she'll be in the country for a few weeks. This is the part where I make a disparaging joke about how she wasn't able to come to Perth and so as far as I'm concerned she isn't here, but I suspect she'll be Luke Combsing up the charts soon enough.

Once again it's difficult to say it could've gotten there without the Hottest 100, and more fun to think that way. Once again, it's difficult to say what'll be #1 next week. "APT." is closing the gap once again. Amusingly, I'm not counting the last two songs to be #1 on Spotify, "That's So True" and "Not Like Us", although in the latter's case, that's possibly an incidence of Australia being a day behind international news cycles. It's not leading by as much as it is in the UK, but it's possible it'll have a better day tomorrow relatively speaking. A peculiar side-product of GRAMMY discourse, is that all discussion of Benson Boone related manners always escapes my periphery, but it must exist, he's gone and jumped back into the top 10, in a manner that can only be described as ultimate Weeknd trolling. "Timeless" spent its first 3 weeks in the top 10, and in what should have been a sure bet to make the top 10, has returned to #11. On The Weeknd, he only has one debut in the top 50, with "Cry For Me". I haven't heard enough people say this, but "Cry For Me" by Magdalena Bay is an excellent pop song that was released last year, I'm planning on seeing them live next month. Getting new peaks in the top 20, we've got Doechii being 1 position shy (pick your least favourite song in the top 10 to no longer exist) of a Fetty Wap climb (also annoyingly it seems like ARIA are not counting "Again", it previously peaked at #53). Luke Combs also very belatedly makes the top 20 this week with "Ain't No Love In Oklahoma", a truly random winner of most popular Luke Combs song currently. Morgan Wallen arrives at #21, looking to be frontloaded like his recent entries for now. What will certainly not be frontloaded in terms of the first tracking week is Lady Gaga's "Abracadabra", just sneaking in at #50 and looking at a decent climb next week. The Weeknd scores his 5th #1 album. I continue to yell at the clouds in praise of "Trilogy". I neglected to mention Luke Combs' new peak on the album chart last week but I am remembering it now. "This One's For You" is making serious headway to becoming the longest charting studio album ever. It's about a year off the mark but being helped by Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift's particular efforts no longer guaranteeing their standings in the top 50. I hate to report that there are zero Australian albums in the top 50 this week.

I actually found the game pretty fun to watch despite how one-sided it was. I'm always going to be an Aussie rules purist when it comes to football (only 23 days to go!), but there's an excitement to be had with seeing the best of the best do their things. Those 50+ yard touchdowns & field goals are wonderful, and the result is a great reminder of how hard it is to 3peat. Collingwood supporters, do not reply to this message. All the flowers to Kendrick too. Only person who's made it fun to hate on Drake :D in over a decade.

Billie Eilish 50 46 024 30 96 MONTHS Calvin Harris We've got a potentially interesting chart first this week. For decades we've witnessed the first hand response to triple j's Hottest 100, rebounding past hits, thrusting new ones into the spotlight and whatnot. Something I don't think we've ever seen before though is a song actually reaching #1 as a result of this initial burst. We've had some close calls, like "Heat Waves" looking to have the gumption if not for Olivia Rodrigo's unprecedented numbers (Glass Animals did get to #1 but not until a while later), ditto Amy Shark having to compete with the Ed Sheeran quinella. But I was surprised on Friday to see Lola Young take the top spot given the chart positions I was witnessing. From that it can be concluded to be a fairly close margin and one where "Messy"'s #4 finish to "APT."'s non-entry is enough of a swing to change the course of chart history. What makes it more potent is that there's every possibility that "APT." just gets back to #1 next week. Much like N-Trance's "Stayin' Alive" hitting #1 for a week because "Gangsta's Paradise" ran out of stock in shops on its second week, resulting in a 5-16-1-1-1-1... chart run, Lola Young has managed to shoot her shot with ideal timing. Otherwise this week, Tate McRae gets her 3rd top 10 hit. The massive Luke Combs Australian tour marches on and "When It Rains It Pours" actually manages a new peak. He's still got a couple of shows to go at Marvel Stadium so even if Damien Hardwick won't be in attendance, he could climb again and get that illusive top 20 peak. Teddy Swims scores his first ever #1 album. Part 1 debuted at #4 but you can imagine a few genuine crossover hits later (just the biggest hit of 2024 in the US, nbd) and he's grown to have a slightly bigger fanbase. Central Cee is also on the up, previously peaking at #6, but will have to settle for #2 as the UK rap scene continues to wait for its first ever #1 (I am not counting 21 Savage). Australian pop punk or thereabouts band Slowly Slowly score their 3rd top 10 album this week. I'm less familiar with the glam rock band Sisters Doll despite them being from my home state, but they're charting for the first time ever with their 3rd album at #11. Also charting for the first time is Bad Omens. Well, actually their album has been hovering below the chart for years but now with a new vinyl release, reaches the top 50 for the first time ever. Kane Brown returns with his 3rd top 50 album too.

The last song to spend as long at #1 was "Flowers" back in 2023 that got to 12, so that's the next target for Rosé. She'll probably manage it but there has been a spanner in the works as promised. We did have triple j's Hottest 100 over the weekend and I'm still recovering. If you wish to learn more about the Hottest 100, my blog powers on. Last week I wrote a particularly lengthy entry ranting about a misconception of an extremely Australian song I was quite proud of. In any case, Lola Young's #4 finish has granted her a certain amount of interest that hasn't really been extended to Gracie Abrams' #5 finish, curious that. It's turning this thing into a three horse race on Spotify, although I still trust the incumbent elsewhere. The big news of the week otherwise is that Luke Combs is back here again. We get a slight variation on the rule of the same songs re-entering every time this happens because "Where The Wild Things Are" actually re-enters at a new peak. You could very well expect him to keep climbing next week. In vaguely new news, Doechii gets her first ever top 50 hit with "DENIAL IS A RIVER", I am very much endorsing this message. Cench & 21 also give us another new 2025 entry which should at least last a second week with the album release. I await to see if 2024's highly touted status as a year in music also makes it very difficult to unseat in the coming weeks. On a related note, I have to point out that ARIA re-tagged "Tweaker" because that's not something that happens very often. I worry that somewhere down the line, someone's gonna misremember the dates and think that it's thanks to triple j's Hottest 100, but no, Gracie Abrams is back at #1 for a second week thanks to a vinyl re-issue. She's not alone this week, we've also got Benson Boone & Fred again.. benefitting. In a week where Australian music struggles are being highlighted a lot, let's put some attention onto the successes, specifically the top debut this week from Dear Seattle. They've previously made the top 50 twice before but no higher than #31, so they're making the big jump to #4 this time around. They're just ahead of Robbie Williams which might almost still count as Australian content. Not because Robbie's spent the last 2 years as a raging Carlton fan (I suspect this doesn't show up in the movie) but because "Better Man" is arguably his best selling song in Australia on pure sales. I have no idea what the perception of this song is in the UK, where it must be at least somewhat known since it's a likeable cut from a very successful album, but one that didn't get its chart tenure properly. Our two countries don't always agree on everything, but I think we definitely should work together in making fun of the incuriosity of Americans regarding this biopic. Mac Miller's latest posthumous full release of an old mixtape arrives at #12, a few spots higher than "Faces" landed.

That'd be around when you think it's going to wind down but actually it took back the #1 spot on Spotify so it's looking pretty safe. The one thing that could throw a spanner in the works is triple j's Hottest 100. I'm avoiding spoilers so please don't tell me, but if I were making predictions, I think Gracie Abrams & Lola Young polling, and "APT." not polling is a pretty safe bet. If they poll particularly high (which they could well), that could be a difference maker. Last week I said that "Kisses" got a new peak. It actually didn't, but it did this week. Ball Brothers gives us a rare new entry at this time of year, and we also have Alex Warren jumping back up for unclear reasons. We've had the song floating around since July, and it made the new music chart too during that brief window where ARIA put Ella Henderson's name on it. They've taken it off which is a rare move in these parts. Sabrina Carpenter also gets a 10th week at #1. Not much to report really except that Bad Bunny has vaulted up to score his first top 50 album. His previous album never quite got there but spent a long time hovering around below the chart, so it probably did better numbers than a lot of #1 albums did. Childish Gambino scores a debut with a re-issue of his #11 peaking album "3.15.20". Also keep an eye on Luke Combs as he gets into his Australian tour here, we could see his debut album finally score a new peak.
  24. Was literally watching a video about Twin Peaks and heard the news minutes later. Woefully ignorant of much of his filmography, but the aforementioned show (and film) is one of my favourite things ever. Lynch's own character manages to be one of the best parts of it against some stacked competition, his loud voice lives rent free in my head. Will be greatly missed.

I think it'll be #1 again next week. Chrystal also climbs into the top 10. ARIA is not yet counting it as a Dance song, so BL3SS & co. are back to #1 on that chart, with a new peak here too. The jig is very immediately up for "Beautiful Things" after living on borrowed time in the top 10 for months, but its power is transferred over to "Slow It Down" which is taking another stab at reaching the top 20. Morgan Wallen replaces his old song with his new song, though Spotify suggests that his somewhat new song is the top dog in the future. Tyla gets her second top 50 hit and we have an actual 🚨 AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON 🚨 because Sonny Fodera has finally made the top 50 for the first time with "Somedays". It's hardly him just getting a hit now, the song is already gold, and "Asking" went platinum, but we have to take these tangible results when we can get them. As for why it's climbing so suddenly now, I can only guess that Hot Hits Australia is getting a bit more of a rinsing in this January doldrums period, as a lot of climbing/higher-than-you-would-expect songs trace their lineage to it. Sabrina Carpenter gets a 9th week at #1. You can really tell it's January because we have our annual rapid ascent of Maroon 5 even amongst the usual crowd. Lil Baby gives us our first actual 2025 content on the chart.
