Once again it's difficult to say it could've gotten there without the Hottest 100, and more fun to think that way. Once again, it's difficult to say what'll be #1 next week. "APT." is closing the gap once again. Amusingly, I'm not counting the last two songs to be #1 on Spotify, "That's So True" and "Not Like Us", although in the latter's case, that's possibly an incidence of Australia being a day behind international news cycles. It's not leading by as much as it is in the UK, but it's possible it'll have a better day tomorrow relatively speaking. A peculiar side-product of GRAMMY discourse, is that all discussion of Benson Boone related manners always escapes my periphery, but it must exist, he's gone and jumped back into the top 10, in a manner that can only be described as ultimate Weeknd trolling. "Timeless" spent its first 3 weeks in the top 10, and in what should have been a sure bet to make the top 10, has returned to #11. On The Weeknd, he only has one debut in the top 50, with "Cry For Me". I haven't heard enough people say this, but "Cry For Me" by Magdalena Bay is an excellent pop song that was released last year, I'm planning on seeing them live next month. Getting new peaks in the top 20, we've got Doechii being 1 position shy (pick your least favourite song in the top 10 to no longer exist) of a Fetty Wap climb (also annoyingly it seems like ARIA are not counting "Again", it previously peaked at #53). Luke Combs also very belatedly makes the top 20 this week with "Ain't No Love In Oklahoma", a truly random winner of most popular Luke Combs song currently. Morgan Wallen arrives at #21, looking to be frontloaded like his recent entries for now. What will certainly not be frontloaded in terms of the first tracking week is Lady Gaga's "Abracadabra", just sneaking in at #50 and looking at a decent climb next week. The Weeknd scores his 5th #1 album. I continue to yell at the clouds in praise of "Trilogy". I neglected to mention Luke Combs' new peak on the album chart last week but I am remembering it now. "This One's For You" is making serious headway to becoming the longest charting studio album ever. It's about a year off the mark but being helped by Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift's particular efforts no longer guaranteeing their standings in the top 50. I hate to report that there are zero Australian albums in the top 50 this week.
  3. Gordon Ramsay, finally some good food dot png.
  4. I actually found the game pretty fun to watch despite how one-sided it was. I'm always going to be an Aussie rules purist when it comes to football (only 23 days to go!), but there's an excitement to be had with seeing the best of the best do their things. Those 50+ yard touchdowns & field goals are wonderful, and the result is a great reminder of how hard it is to 3peat. Collingwood supporters, do not reply to this message. All the flowers to Kendrick too. Only person who's made it fun to hate on Drake :D in over a decade.
  5. Haha, I hadn't seen your post but I just made a reddit post on this very subject.

Billie Eilish 50 46 024 30 96 MONTHS Calvin Harris We've got a potentially interesting chart first this week. For decades we've witnessed the first hand response to triple j's Hottest 100, rebounding past hits, thrusting new ones into the spotlight and whatnot. Something I don't think we've ever seen before though is a song actually reaching #1 as a result of this initial burst. We've had some close calls, like "Heat Waves" looking to have the gumption if not for Olivia Rodrigo's unprecedented numbers (Glass Animals did get to #1 but not until a while later), ditto Amy Shark having to compete with the Ed Sheeran quinella. But I was surprised on Friday to see Lola Young take the top spot given the chart positions I was witnessing. From that it can be concluded to be a fairly close margin and one where "Messy"'s #4 finish to "APT."'s non-entry is enough of a swing to change the course of chart history. What makes it more potent is that there's every possibility that "APT." just gets back to #1 next week. Much like N-Trance's "Stayin' Alive" hitting #1 for a week because "Gangsta's Paradise" ran out of stock in shops on its second week, resulting in a 5-16-1-1-1-1... chart run, Lola Young has managed to shoot her shot with ideal timing. Otherwise this week, Tate McRae gets her 3rd top 10 hit. The massive Luke Combs Australian tour marches on and "When It Rains It Pours" actually manages a new peak. He's still got a couple of shows to go at Marvel Stadium so even if Damien Hardwick won't be in attendance, he could climb again and get that illusive top 20 peak. Teddy Swims scores his first ever #1 album. Part 1 debuted at #4 but you can imagine a few genuine crossover hits later (just the biggest hit of 2024 in the US, nbd) and he's grown to have a slightly bigger fanbase. Central Cee is also on the up, previously peaking at #6, but will have to settle for #2 as the UK rap scene continues to wait for its first ever #1 (I am not counting 21 Savage). Australian pop punk or thereabouts band Slowly Slowly score their 3rd top 10 album this week. I'm less familiar with the glam rock band Sisters Doll despite them being from my home state, but they're charting for the first time ever with their 3rd album at #11. Also charting for the first time is Bad Omens. Well, actually their album has been hovering below the chart for years but now with a new vinyl release, reaches the top 50 for the first time ever. Kane Brown returns with his 3rd top 50 album too.

The last song to spend as long at #1 was "Flowers" back in 2023 that got to 12, so that's the next target for Rosé. She'll probably manage it but there has been a spanner in the works as promised. We did have triple j's Hottest 100 over the weekend and I'm still recovering. If you wish to learn more about the Hottest 100, my blog powers on. Last week I wrote a particularly lengthy entry ranting about a misconception of an extremely Australian song I was quite proud of. In any case, Lola Young's #4 finish has granted her a certain amount of interest that hasn't really been extended to Gracie Abrams' #5 finish, curious that. It's turning this thing into a three horse race on Spotify, although I still trust the incumbent elsewhere. The big news of the week otherwise is that Luke Combs is back here again. We get a slight variation on the rule of the same songs re-entering every time this happens because "Where The Wild Things Are" actually re-enters at a new peak. You could very well expect him to keep climbing next week. In vaguely new news, Doechii gets her first ever top 50 hit with "DENIAL IS A RIVER", I am very much endorsing this message. Cench & 21 also give us another new 2025 entry which should at least last a second week with the album release. I await to see if 2024's highly touted status as a year in music also makes it very difficult to unseat in the coming weeks. On a related note, I have to point out that ARIA re-tagged "Tweaker" because that's not something that happens very often. I worry that somewhere down the line, someone's gonna misremember the dates and think that it's thanks to triple j's Hottest 100, but no, Gracie Abrams is back at #1 for a second week thanks to a vinyl re-issue. She's not alone this week, we've also got Benson Boone & Fred again.. benefitting. In a week where Australian music struggles are being highlighted a lot, let's put some attention onto the successes, specifically the top debut this week from Dear Seattle. They've previously made the top 50 twice before but no higher than #31, so they're making the big jump to #4 this time around. They're just ahead of Robbie Williams which might almost still count as Australian content. Not because Robbie's spent the last 2 years as a raging Carlton fan (I suspect this doesn't show up in the movie) but because "Better Man" is arguably his best selling song in Australia on pure sales. I have no idea what the perception of this song is in the UK, where it must be at least somewhat known since it's a likeable cut from a very successful album, but one that didn't get its chart tenure properly. Our two countries don't always agree on everything, but I think we definitely should work together in making fun of the incuriosity of Americans regarding this biopic. Mac Miller's latest posthumous full release of an old mixtape arrives at #12, a few spots higher than "Faces" landed.

That'd be around when you think it's going to wind down but actually it took back the #1 spot on Spotify so it's looking pretty safe. The one thing that could throw a spanner in the works is triple j's Hottest 100. I'm avoiding spoilers so please don't tell me, but if I were making predictions, I think Gracie Abrams & Lola Young polling, and "APT." not polling is a pretty safe bet. If they poll particularly high (which they could well), that could be a difference maker. Last week I said that "Kisses" got a new peak. It actually didn't, but it did this week. Ball Brothers gives us a rare new entry at this time of year, and we also have Alex Warren jumping back up for unclear reasons. We've had the song floating around since July, and it made the new music chart too during that brief window where ARIA put Ella Henderson's name on it. They've taken it off which is a rare move in these parts. Sabrina Carpenter also gets a 10th week at #1. Not much to report really except that Bad Bunny has vaulted up to score his first top 50 album. His previous album never quite got there but spent a long time hovering around below the chart, so it probably did better numbers than a lot of #1 albums did. Childish Gambino scores a debut with a re-issue of his #11 peaking album "3.15.20". Also keep an eye on Luke Combs as he gets into his Australian tour here, we could see his debut album finally score a new peak.
  9. Was literally watching a video about Twin Peaks and heard the news minutes later. Woefully ignorant of much of his filmography, but the aforementioned show (and film) is one of my favourite things ever. Lynch's own character manages to be one of the best parts of it against some stacked competition, his loud voice lives rent free in my head. Will be greatly missed.

I think it'll be #1 again next week. Chrystal also climbs into the top 10. ARIA is not yet counting it as a Dance song, so BL3SS & co. are back to #1 on that chart, with a new peak here too. The jig is very immediately up for "Beautiful Things" after living on borrowed time in the top 10 for months, but its power is transferred over to "Slow It Down" which is taking another stab at reaching the top 20. Morgan Wallen replaces his old song with his new song, though Spotify suggests that his somewhat new song is the top dog in the future. Tyla gets her second top 50 hit and we have an actual 🚨 AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON 🚨 because Sonny Fodera has finally made the top 50 for the first time with "Somedays". It's hardly him just getting a hit now, the song is already gold, and "Asking" went platinum, but we have to take these tangible results when we can get them. As for why it's climbing so suddenly now, I can only guess that Hot Hits Australia is getting a bit more of a rinsing in this January doldrums period, as a lot of climbing/higher-than-you-would-expect songs trace their lineage to it. Sabrina Carpenter gets a 9th week at #1. You can really tell it's January because we have our annual rapid ascent of Maroon 5 even amongst the usual crowd. Lil Baby gives us our first actual 2025 content on the chart.

I don't know if there's anything remarkable to point out, but I suppose for clarity (this is a Vance Joy pun), I should point out that "Riptide" looks like it climbed a lot, but that's just because it finally got a full calendar year that it didn't get last year. Also after 7 years in a row on the list (a record), "Perfect" has not made the cut. "Sunflower" has made it to 7 years now though, but it's not looking good for next year. Taylor Swift takes the top album slot for the 3rd year in a row. It's a bad year for Ed Sheeran, Drake & Post Malone in particular. It's especially worth noting that given ARIA's new recurrency rules below the top 100 on the album chart, a lot of these albums that dropped out from last year's list are probably not coming back. One must suspect that this will eventually show a noticeable effect with numerous albums no longer having second winds (imagine some Taylor Swift albums just being missing for instance), which might lower the threshold needed for big sales albums to get in. We need some sort of hope because it's looking pretty bleak for Australian albums this year, none of these 3 albums that made it for 2024 look safe for making it in 2025.

The way people respond to these sorts of things has the unfortunate side effect of justifying it. As has been said before, years down the track, the average person isn't going to remember the specific timeline and how that affects the rationale of the selection. On the other hand, if you make a dud pick that goes nowhere, that will get parroted. You're more likely to hear someone laugh at the GRAMMYs for giving Best New Artist to A Taste Of Honey or Marc Cohn, rather than the fact that Bon Iver won it 4 and a half years after "For Emma..." came out. Tastemakers get more kudos for parroting consensus mainstream opinions than actually being tastemakers.
  14. That's fair. My philosophy is that accuracy comes first which I feel isn't always shared when I see untimely ACR cheered on and the like. My feeling is that if songs spending a few too many months in the top 40 can cause outrage that requires a rule change, then the studio album only utopia would do the same. It's that grass is greener philosophy, but fair play if that's how you see it.
  15. Yeah I generally agree. You'll get some newer albums that ride on initial sales/streams that get a couple of extra weeks, but overwhelmingly it's those albums that are probably #120 every week that get the most out of it. Just like how the #101-#200 section on Spotify has very few songs that haven't already made the top 100.
  16. Oh, I should have better clarified. I agree that very few are seeing a Greatest Hits comp. on the chart and thinking 'ooh I need to buy that', but I do think it makes for exposure nonetheless. It's simply another avenue for us to be perpetually reminded that the artist exists, and makes them just that little bit more likely to pop into our heads when we think 'who am I gonna stream today?'. If I want to see what's popular, I look at the charts, and I'm gonna see some artists and not others. Categorically, these compilations distil it to the biggest names winning out on the whole, and you wouldn't get that if all the streams were portioned between studio albums with the top 2 tracks neutralised on each album. The difference between the label and the enthusiastic chart fan is that the label don't care if the album is selling peanuts and being pushed in by people who hardly know it exists. The average music fan doesn't even notice, and anecdotally probably just accepts it as gospel. But then those enthusiastic fans seem to do the same thing too when it suits their interests. So many times on this forum I've seen the topic of auto-play come up and a common response is 'I hope Song/Artist X gets boosted by it next'. That's basically outright admitting acceptance of the idea of an inflated sense of popularity under the pretence that it'll eventually be forgotten or reduced to the increasingly deranged kind of comments that get lost in the shuffle of stan war misinformation. The day I see music fans stop distorting the narratives to talk up their favourites is about as likely to come as labels not wanting to exaggerate their own rosters where payrolls are of concern. The main thing I wanted to say though is that if they do remove all the compilations, I guarantee that there'll be very little satisfaction in the long run. It'll look nice immediately, all those albums rocketing up to better positions, maybe lasting a couple weeks more than they would. But you'll just run into a new set of enemies, whether they be pseudo-compilations that skirt by whatever rule the OCC have in place (remember when Mabel & Becky Hill's albums were the target of these discussions?), or they're just absolute hit factory albums that just aren't capable of declining enough to drop out of the chart. Making the chart easier to enter simultaneously makes it harder to fall out of. Removing a whole lot of albums gives less entries to shuffle around each other. You'll get something like the Australian hip-hop chart where there's a recurrency rule that gutted the bottom half of the chart. You're largely just left with more distinctly separate remnants that are allowed on the chart that can't reach each other with week to week randomness because they're too far apart. The chart would end up even *more* boring than it was before. I'm also always keen to point out the Aotearoa album chart which has a rough 1.5 year recurrency rule. It largely gets rid of GH albums except the new ones (there are 10 this week but most will be gone by the end of the year), and it's not exactly a thrilling chart that I'm eager to check out every week. Everything just gets stuck in a rut after a couple of months. Apologies if my posts keep end up being long winded, but every single time I see some sort of chart 'fix' suggested, I don't think there's ever enough consideration on the long term effects. Nothing short of considerable music consumption habit upheaval will produce the idealised version of the charts that are longed for, because the cracks of a quick fix will always show.
  17. I think that example just strengthens what the OCC are doing though. If people are really just looking for a specific song, they're gonna search the specific song, not the album its from. At which point, it's totally up to Spotify's whim where it comes from. This could change unexpectedly at some point and cause some otherwise unexplainable chart movement, and even otherwise, the whole thing would be neutering chart positions for no particular reason. Giving the streaming point to both albums is a solid compromise, and works on the basis that unless the studio album itself is getting serious attention (in the case of Elton John, not really, but in the case of Fleetwood Mac & Oasis, for sure), it's only really showing up on one album. For the label, it's their meal ticket (Elton John tells me you've gotta get one of those), so it works for them. Also just an example of that Spotify chicanery. Eminem's "Lose Yourself" shows up on charts & his Spotify page as coming from the "Just Lose It" single. For quite a while, it actually never showed up on his top 10, as part of some glitch in the algorithm since people mostly were streaming it from "Curtain Call" I guess. That lack of exposure really stifled it for a while and is probably why it never ran away with being his most streamed song. Also also I don't think these albums are necessarily immortal. "Diamonds" also charted in Australia's top 50 for over 5 years straight but it spent all of last year gradually petering out and dropped out for several weeks. The perpetuity is probably helped by labels who can see in real time if their artists are losing traction and course correct themselves, resulting in what we see as endless sustainability. When "The Dark Side Of The Moon" spent over a decade consecutively on the Billboard 200, people probably thought that it would never drop out, and made a joke of the system. Streaming is simply demonstrating the same system.
  18. It's not perfect but I can see the intent behind it. If you pit the 'struggle' between the 2nd & 3rd most relevant albums, it significantly reduces instances of that awkward switcheroo. Billboard for instance were only allowing one album (I believe they still are but can't check), and these sorts of messy mishaps happened all the time. Like Jessie J's album tanking because Ariana Grande had first dibs on "Bang Bang", or The Weeknd's "After Hours" and "The Highlights" spending years trading places over and over again. A system that leads to one studio album and one hits album is a reasonable enough compromise. If the chart were absolutely littered with constant side by side double ups maybe they'd reconsider, but it's mostly just Fleetwood Mac & Oasis with studio albums that have complete plausible deniability through their reputation, while it's hardly stopping anyone from getting a #1 album, so it doesn't affect the bigger picture really. I'd say look at any given run of 5-10 albums in the bottom half of the album chart and ask yourself if we're really missing out on much of note thanks to some position cloggers. #101-#110 on any given week probably looks pretty similar.
  19. Not enough props given for these threads, bravo ^_^
  20. Tell them all I said hi, hope you've been well, you've been asleep while I've been awake because of timezone differences. I'll be just fine waiting for ARIA's 2024 End Of Year charts to be posted, upon which I will post them in last year's thread. I don't know if all or some or none of this week's chart factors into the calculation, or if that has any spooky implications for what happens to the list. 06/01/2024 Singles 01 08 11 01 APT. "APT." makes 8 weeks at #1. It's done this despite only managing 17 days at #1 on Spotify so far, a number that is not increasing at the moment. Which is why I feel safe saying it'll be #1 again next week. In all the chaos we do have some entries this week, leading the pack is Chrystal's "The Days" which has been waiting to make its move for a couple weeks and could well threaten the top 10 next week. Something has to displace that suspiciously declining Benson Boone song. SZA finally makes an impression with her new music, getting a single entry with "BMF". I have an extremely reluctant Australian music klaxon 🚨 as we have seemingly made no progress from last year. Royel Otis get their second ever top 50 hit and surprise surprise, it's another cover of an international hit as performed for a radio station, what did we do to be so spoiled for local content? Actually we might have another Australian entry next week so watch this space. The most interesting thing this week though is the arrival of "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, a song that peaked at #100 when it first came out, wasn't let back on the chart when the whole Glee situation was popping off, and has been stewing below the chart in the last few years. By my reckoning it was the 2nd biggest hit of all time to never make the top 50, behind Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" which had its own version of misfortune. The song is of course relevant to me not just because I'm just about to finish watching The Sopranos and I'm told it's fairly prominent in the final episode, but because in September for the finals campaign, the Brisbane Lions social team whipped up a 'Believe' mantra. It turned out to be very apt as the team that had no business being the main character mounted two ridiculous comebacks on their way to Grand Final demolition. The Instagram caption at the time was something to the effect of 'Never stopped believing'. I'm curious to see if any players adopt Journey for a goal song in the 2025 season. Sabrina Carpenter also gets an 8th week at #1 on the album chart. There's very little to note on the chart this week except that Pitbull is somewhat close to a new peak. Also remember when Ed Sheeran's album looked unstoppable? Now it's just barely sneaking back in after 2 whole months out of the top 50.

  22. I agree about the initial boost but then it went and had a second wind a month after that which never made much sense to me. On Dec 28th there was a big decline to a new equilibrium everywhere. I love the song and don't doubt its popularity, but it was just a touch higher than made sense until last week I thought.
  23. I (sort of) called it! Feels like a different breed of the autoplay stuff that'd get mentioned a year or so ago, just that it's sometimes months and months on end. I've no idea how long this might have been going on for, but suffice to say I've been suspicious of this song for months. "See You Again" also dropped a lot recently, though it's disguised by all the Christmas shenanigans.
  24. It's not the fun answer, but so much of it just comes down to how willing the artist and/or label are willing to do corporate shilling. The most perennially uncool acts of letting your songs be in commercials, making Christmas music has the side effect of letting an artist endure beyond their steadfast peers. No one would ever imagine in the '90s that Smash Mouth would be nearly as popular as Pearl Jam decades in the future, but the former has their Shrek moment for the next generation while the latter frequently stood to their (admirable) beliefs and hardly sold out. What draws zoomers into Pearl Jam? Whenever I see a new high budget biopic or legacy artist-centric film, it screams to me of labels or rightsholders scurrying to immortalise that artist's legacy, and they do it because it absolutely just works.

Mariah Carey now has 9 weeks at #1 for "All I Want For Christmas Is You". It might not be smooth sailing from here though. Unless it really is just a one year blip, Wham! made a serious challenge for the top spot after usually finishing at #3 so momentum might be on their side to get to the top spot. Otherwise the big winners this year include Bobby Helms, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Bieber, Perry Como, Darlene Love, Gwen Stefani & Bruce Springsteen. I should also give special shout out to Laufey & John Williams for hitting the top 50 for the first time ever, and Mark Ambor for getting a second one. Sabrina Carpenter just barely misses matching the peak of the original "Nonsense" (#22). Over here we also always love to see Paul Kelly sneak in with the best Christmas-adjacent song you've never heard. Despite the poor showings in preceding weeks, Michael Buble had a very strong year on the Spotify chart for getting his deeper cuts included, which is good for this chart and almost gets him back to the #1 spot for the first time in many years. He doesn't though, so Sabrina Carpenter gets a 7th week there. Also this is the last chart of the year so thanks for reading and see you next thread! I will of course post the End Of Year charts in this thread, and post a sentence about how I'm going to do that in next year's thread, it's tradition at this point.
