Hozier & Tate McRae have been touring here lately, and I know Artemas is presenting at the ARIA Awards for some reason so maybe he's getting a local boost as well. Through sales I am unable to allocate, Coldplay have managed to go to #1 anyway, with a once and a blue moon scenario of dropping out of the top 50 and only peaking at #1 on the re-entry.

I strongly suspect it won't stay there next week and you probably know why. I mentioned last week the clerical error around the performance for Coldplay's "Yellow". It once again falls under the unofficial rule that the top 20 is sacred, and looks to be quite accurate now, climbing considerably higher than it's ever been in the last 23 years. There's more Coldplay to go with that, including the first appearance since COVID-19 for The Chainsmokers in the ARIA top 50. The Weeknd also brings along Anitta for a first ever top 50 entry. Tyler, The Creator had never had a #1 album before last week and now he's #1 for a second consecutive week with no vinyl. He stays ahead of quite a number of debuts, especially on the Australian side of things. Firstly Paul Kelly who has had a habit of #1 albums at this time of year lately, but has to make do with #3. Then we've got Chase Atlantic who I very much assure is a different band to Stand Atlantic, however the battle line has been drawn and the Standers win this time as they charted 1 position higher about a month ago. For the first time in nearly 30 years, The Cure are back in the top 10. I remember back in 2008 when every single they released periodically in the lead up to their album charted in the top 100, but then the album itself only made #30. John Butler's been making serious waves on the charts going all the way back to 2001. That's mostly with his interchangeable trio, with which he's had 4 #1 albums. When it comes to proper solo albums, he's never quite had the same fanfare, but this week manages an equal solo high at #23. Lastly with the longest gap she's ever had between albums, we've got the return of Sarah Blasko, who has previously made the top 10 with 5 of her albums. I've been something of a fan since I first discovered her music in 2006, and finally got to see her live earlier this year.

We will probably not reach a point of enough "APT." weeks to match the song's chorus but you never know I guess. It'll probably be #1 next week but has been threatened at the top of the Spotify chart by Gracie Abrams, which really flies in the face of my attempts for years to not acknowledge her music. Anyway the main thing that happened here is that Tyler, The Creator had a lot of chart entries, and you have to remember that in Australia, the week was even more over by the time "CHROMAKOPIA" came out so that's even more impressive. Sneaking in alongside is "Sailor Song" going top 10, missing out on the chance of clean sweeping 11's. Also Lady Gaga arrives in the top 40, which I have to imagine was helped by YouTube numbers because "Disease" actually never made the Spotify top 50. Coldplay are also in the unimportant east side of Australia currently. They played Perth a year ago and had a handful of re-entries back then, although I'm not sure now if it's because of that show or because they also announced that they'd be back a year later in the larger population centres. That year has arrived now though which means I get to speculate once again if "Yellow" is being under-counted on the chart again. For now it's just "Viva la vida", but "Yellow" was #13 on Spotify yesterday. They'll certainly climb next week. In an album chart battle of sales that only technically took place this week, Tyler, The Creator scores his first ever #1 album. Despite dominant streaming numbers, he's tended to always fall short due to the release strategy which is sufficient to top the US charts but not here. Amends were made though, as his Australian tour has a CD bundle option so despite the album not actually being out physically yet, that's what's gotten him over the line. The irony here is that Amyl And The Sniffers have gotten to #2 largely off the back of pre-orders that were made weeks and months ago all cashing in on Friday. They're a way away from legendary misfortune status but this is their second consecutive #2 album, as back in 2021 the incumbent Drake held them off. Sheppard also return to the top 10 thanks to what appears to be digital sales, I'm not sure what's spurred it. Green Day's second #1 album also returns. The way more fascinating 'return' for my books though is Powderfinger's debut album. Now, Powderfinger would hit #4 with their second album and then #1 with every subsequent album, but this debut album only ever reached #51. Not only that, but it's widely considered to be pretty terrible, and jarring to anyone familiar with the band. I guess for a UK equivalent, imagine if The Beautiful South made an album in the early '90s that sounded like Pearl Jam. Anyway, they've managed to get enough people to get around the 30th anniversary that it's hitting the top 50 for the first time ever. Elsewhere this week, Halsey returns as one of those aforementioned legendary misfortune statuses with three #2 albums to their name. This is the first one to land below #3. A little while ago, there was an inexplicable ABBA compilation that just kinda sat around the #50 spot on the ARIA Chart for months until it was exiled. It was a very specific box set that probably wasn't actually on sale but generated the streaming points incidentally. Anyway, this new one probably has sales this week but it's a mystery what happens after now. It's crazy that I could bring up Halsey because there's a handful of people who are even more unlucky on the ARIA Chart and the grand champion of that is Thom Yorke. Between Radiohead and his solo career, he's had 7 #2 peaks without a #1. I hear he's gonna take Luke Parker's spot in the Sydney Swans line up next year. Anyhow, he's not coming close to that this time with a live album, which is remarkably awkward timing given that he just made international news for stopping a show due to being heckled in Melbourne about his Israel stance. I'll leave you to make up your own mind on that and just say that Kelsea Ballerini sneaks in a 4th top 50 album.

Artists you liked before they were cool
Listened to Gotye's music a lot in 2007, could've been earlier but wasn't into music at the time. Tame Impala a year or so later. The Weeknd's "House of Balloons" was my morning commute soundtrack for much of 2011, also heard BENEE's debut single (back when she was just Bene) literally the day it came out in 2017 and was championing her all the way from then.

If streaming was around in the late 90s/early 2000s
There are two ways to look at it and they're equally boring and unsatisfying answers. 1. Basically nothing changes because hardly anyone had access to that kind of technology at the time, it's a drop in the ocean 2. You suddenly have to imagine a drastically different world to accommodate such a thing and then the entire music landscape is different as a result. But then let's say for example we take the most simple way of looking at it: Suddenly chart companies are able to track and collate what's being played on home/car stereos or whatever, akin to today's system. You first need a baseline starting point because we need to know the point at which the whole infrastructure is rebuilt. But also, we need to know what's going on with sales anyway. Are the two working hand in hand? Are we just scrapping them altogether, or is it like now where it's largely negligible except when it rears its head in to stamp in its own version of events (a la LadBaby)? Main thing is that it's not unreasonable to say that there are acts in the '90s/'00s whose M.O. in coordination with their label was getting #1 hits with the tools available. Much like it is now, the industry would simply lean into the streaming-equivalent and adjust accordingly. Such acts would either continue to dominate all the same, or they just wouldn't exist because there wasn't a sufficient market to justify themselves. Alternative simple answer: Streaming changes the chart democracy into one of time over money. There's every possibility that they would simply get more kid friendly since kids have more free time. The only thing I'd feel mildly confident in saying is that there'd be a bit less in the way of ironed-on legacy acts continuing to score hits.

Made me check the old thread because "Shake It Off" was #2 on UK Spotify when it got removed...but it still didn't drop completely out in a single day.

It jumped up 45 spots in Australia tonight which had me wondering  Only a minor climb in the UK though so not much in it I guess.

Billie Eilish Back in 2022 a quirk of point distribution and perhaps just enough overlap with Asian music markets meant that BLACKPINK debuted at #1 in Australia with "Pink Venom", a song that missed the top 20 in the US & UK. In some respects, this means that Rosé was the last somewhat Australian artist to hit #1 here, she was born in New Zealand but spent more time growing up in Australia. The statement is still true but more direct as she now has a #1 single as a solo artist. Bruno Mars is also here, getting his 4th #1 hit, after "Just The Way You Are", "Grenade" and "Uptown Funk". I'd say that's good trivia to keep track of, but a couple of years ago I went to a trivia night and was not correctly appraised of points for identifying high charting Bruno Mars songs which cost me the win (something that still eludes me). I will not put the hosts on blast though because I was compensated a bonus point next time I went. Speaking of belated attribution, "I Love You, I'm Sorry" enters the top 10 this week, something it should have done last week. Should someone unearth this decades from now in confusion at the misaligned timing with other charts, know that ARIA screwed the pooch on this one, again. One Direction have two re-entries this week, the highest being "Night Changes", which actually scores a new peak. Many people have been saying, 'if "Tension" is so good, why isn't there a "Tension II"', and like all strawmen, they've been horribly crumpled into place this week. Kylie Minogue now has 9 #1 albums. We are once again seeing the single/album chart divide as we've got 4 debuts in the top 10, all Australian, none have any charting singles. The second is Dean Lewis who actually improves on his last album's peak position, and then we've got another former #1 artist in Skegss (not Skeggs, I assure you). Thelma Plum has not had a #1 album but this is her second to make the top 10, 5 years after the first. All 5 of One Directions albums re-enter here, and we've got debuts for Confidence Man & Yeat, the former fairly low here all things considered. With this massive influx we've got a lot of albums seeing considerably lower positions than they're used to. Notably, "Diamonds" by Elton John drops out for the first time this decade, meaning that Luke Combs' "This One's For You" is the only album that has charted every week of this decade. All up this is its 333rd week in the top 50.

I mean, I was thinking that unless you're gunning for the #1 spot, does anyone really need to release on a Friday? You might get a slightly different peak, but anyone with experience with charts is just gonna recognise the inevitable drop off and then take away the credibility of the position. Something like 'oh that's just an album bomb*/that's just fanbase curiosity streams'. Even as a chart watcher myself, the novelty of 'wow, this artist who isn't known for populating the pop charts was really high on them for a week or two' diminishes. In the long run, "IGOR" & "Flower Boy" are getting more streams than any Drake album currently, who cares that they didn't do 100 million on their first week? Btw, the only top 10 hit Tyler has had anywhere is "EARFQUAKE" which did so in Australia and New Zealand, and it peaked on the second week. I actually probably wouldn't have gotten to "CHROMAKOPIA" in a hurry if it were released on a Friday. I'm always so worn out on new singles that I'm not in the mood to check out new albums, but the Monday release on its own worked great. *Really dislike this term. Reeks of people coming up with a dismissive term to describe something they don't like (ala bro-step, skip-hop) and that's never a good foundation

Who 'fell off' the hardest and fastest?
Within the space of one month in 2021, Rancid Eddie blew up, went top 10 on Australian Spotify (+ top 200 UK/Ireland/Norway), got cancelled and then just obliterated from any sort of public discourse. They only get mentioned about once every 2 months on Twitter. It's all so quick that you can see the entire daily chart run on kworb For a British example, Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong had some hits, their album got good reviews, but then it never came out and they broke up.

With only 11 weeks left in the chart year it might be a decent shout to say that it'll be the longest running #1 hit of the year, but you never really know until it's mathematically impossible to not know it. In any case it gets a little juicier (tastier?) next week because it may well be dethroned. The new ROSÉ song has rocketed to a healthy lead on Spotify and has the sales & YouTube edge to make me suspect it only needs to half-ass the rest of the week to get there. For comparison also, BLACKPINK already scored a #1 hit 2 years ago with "Pink Venom", despite it finishing the Spotify week at #11 with a 340,000 stream deficit. They can't be underestimated. For possibly the last time I can report that "Bed Chem" is at #10, 7 weeks in a row, crazy! This one has an asterisk attached to it because I believe ARIA did not combine the streams for the live version of "I Love You, I'm Sorry", which I'm sure would have made the difference. Whether they fix that or not next week though, it looks like "Bed Chem" will fall back into the pack next week and will need a jolt of momentum to come back. Speaking of that pack, Myles Smith has now been in the #11-#20 section for 21 consecutive weeks without a top 10 peak. I believe this to be a record, although it's worth noting that Justin Bieber's "Ghost" had a longer run interrupted by Christmas. Dasha would be on 25 consecutive weeks had "Austin" not gotten a single lucky week at #10. In a fascinatingly fast-tracked version of what the charts used to be like, Charli XCX now has 6 top 50 entries from her latest album despite the fact that none of them had done so until several weeks after the release. Also arriving is the new KSI song which I haven't listened to but if you can believe it, it's his second highest charting single ever (behind "Holiday"). Maybe you can believe it, I'm always skeptical of internet hivemind opinions that reach easy punchline ubiquity. My favourite depiction of the new music chart slowing down has been reached. As suspected last week, "GIRLS" by The Kid LAROI does in fact reach a new peak on the New Music chart, despite being a top 20 hit that's no longer in the top 50. It has to be retired next week though, but the arrival of ROSÉ & Morgan Wallen should stem the tide back the other way for a bit. The new arrival of "Somedays" (which I'd guess isn't in the ARIA top 100 as it's only #137 on Spotify) reminds me of the news I feel I need to document. Over the past couple of months, Hot Hits Australia has been slowly expanding. It's been 50 songs for as long as I can remember but every week or so I check and it's added another 5 songs. It's currently 75 songs, and as an amazing bonus, the Australian content quota has really surpassed the usual. When I checked on the weekend, it had 22/75 songs counting as Australian which is far better than the 8-9/50 it was sitting at for a lot of this year. Granted there are some sketchy inclusions in that 22 (Troye Sivan via Charli XCX, CYRIL via Robin Schulz, an Odd Mob remix of Sean Paul's "Get Busy"), but it's the kind of progress I have to commend. Maybe something will be done about the state of the algorithms. Earlier this year Charli XCX debuted at #3 which was a slight comedown as her last album hit the top spot. She's reversed fortunes though and now has a second #1 album. A fair effort given the incumbent streaming avalanche hasn't really slowed down all that much. Sadly the chart personification of Santa Claus has to take another Australian artist off the nice list. RÜFÜS DU SOL missed the top spot in 2018 when they went up against the rough competition in "A Star Is Born", but they got back to #1 again with their next album. Now they're only at #3 which makes you wonder if they could ever get there again. Actually I'm misrepresenting it because they actually haven't released the album physically yet. Maybe with enough pre-orders they'll have the last laugh but I feel like they're just gonna get back into the top 5. The Offspring also return this week. They've had 2 #1 albums in the past (the obvious two), and nearly got a 3rd in 2021 but lost out to London Grammar. Did you know that London Grammar's album a few weeks ago didn't even make the top 50 here? I guess The Offspring had the last laugh, I dunno what happened with that one though, it's an aberration. The potential chart dominance of Jelly Roll seems to loom in the distance. He scored his first top 50 hit earlier this year via Eminem (with a song that's still selling decently), and now has a top 20 album to his name. Sheppard return thanks to vinyl sales, and I should also clarify for context that Olivia Rodrigo, Coldplay & Travis Scott have all been in the country recently. This week is also the first time in 2 years that Taylor Swift has been out of the top 10.

If you are waiting with bated breath for the week where I say it's probably done, you'll have to come back another time because there still isn't anything making a challenge. Again the more important Sabrina news is that "Bed Chem" is #10 for a 6th consecutive week. This far exceeds the benchmark for this which has always been WSTRN's "In2", which if you remember that song, you might remember it spent 4 weeks at its #10 peak. The song will probably decline this week as "Sailor Song" and "I Love You, I'm Sorry" may well overtake it. Or a Charli XCX song? I don't have the capacity to keep up with these things without midweeks so you'll find out with me. In a move that potentially has ACR in shambles, two fairly ancient top 50 entries in "Slow It Down" and "NIGHTS LIKE THIS" both manage new peaks this week. Speaking of The Kid LAROI, I forgot to fire up the NEW AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON last week for "BABY I'M BACK", which benefitted from a belated Hot Hits Australia appearance to finally get over the line. This is an extremely Australian coded sample of Player's "Baby Come Back" because in addition to Ocean Alley's very popular cover of it (certified Gold 4 years ago by ARIA), it's of course used as hold music for the Department Of Missing Babies in Season 3 of The Simpsons. Anyway, in order to repent my mistake, I've been enjoying lately. Look at those view counts, you could be the hippest cat in town if you got in on this. Or if you just want to embrace familiarity, the definitely Australian band Crowded House have returned to the top 50 for the first time in nearly 2 decades, with their notedly popular "Don't Dream It's Over". Speaking of embrace, Ndotz also makes an ARIA debut this week. Sabrina Carpenter has a 6th week at #1 on the album chart. This means that Codpay finally complete their name with a second L. In 2015 they were unable to unseat incumbent Adele, and once again it's an incumbent who blocks them. All of their studio albums have peaked in the top 2 though. This is also just the second of their albums to not net a top 50 hit although I believe "feelslikeimfallinginlove" was quite close on debut. Earlier this year, Stormzy made a strange declaration of an insult on the ARIA Albums Chart, I'm sure you remember. The ARIA Albums Chart has finally responded in kind and now does in fact have a "Backbone", courtesy of Kasey Chambers. Kasey Chambers was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame a few years back which is a rare feat because the selection committee has largely skipped over much of the '90s. Silverchair, Powderfinger, You Am I, Savage Garden, Something For Kate? Not in the ARIA Hall of Fame. Gotta make room for Jet instead. That said, Kasey Chambers' success is largely in the 2000s where she scored 4 #1 albums and a #1 single in "Not Pretty Enough", the goal song of The Big O, Oscar McInerney who tragically missed out on a premiership medal last month when he dislocated his shoulder twice in the preliminary final. Kasey got a 5th #1 album in 2017 and this is her highest chart position since then. On the topic of '90s legends who absolutely should be in the ARIA Hall Of Fame, I'd be remiss not to bring up TISM. You might know them as that band that everyone keeps insisting should go to Eurovision. For over 40 years they've been providing utter irreverance with pointed literary awareness mixed in with Australian nonsense that makes absolutely no sense outside of this country. They do this while remaining largely anonymous, performing with balaclavas at all times. They were on hiatus for most of the 21st century until 2022, and now have a new album to show for it. It's the first one with new member Vladimir Lenin-McCartney, and yes, all of their stage names are ridiculous. Anyway, remember in 2000 when Radiohead released "Kid A", and then had the audacity to put out another album shortly after that was just a bunch of leftovers from those sessions, including songs like "Pyramid Song" and "Life In A Glasshouse"? Absurd. Anyway, The Smile have done something similar and released another album from the same sessions as their album earlier this year. Lastly we have a first time ever entry for Aphex Twin's second "Selected Ambient Works" album. The only other top 50 album he's had is his 2014 album "Syro", perhaps the most iconic album with a harsh, confrontational green shade?
