Depending on your semantic read of it, they're actually not crediting the actors individually. All the cast have separate performers who handle the singing parts. I think crediting all the singers individually makes sense because in reality they're not really part of a group. Playing into the kayfabe makes it easier to search for, and adding the whole cast listing helps with Spotify Wrapped/similar things. Cumbersome, but makes it easier to compartmentalise for anyone who's seen the film. Thing that bugs me is the way iTunes/Apple has it typeset as 'HUNTRX'. If you're not including the forward slash, at least make it a letter i, it's like calling Alesha Moore-Hart 'Pnk'. I await to see if there will soon become a second thing that people mistakenly pronounce as 'Hunter x' 🤓

Those who are making fun of the UK for keeping this song at #1 for so long should probably know that Australia is going to make a mockery of it, ACR or otherwise, probably. There isn't really anything looking to dethrone it, and that's including our new big debut this week for Fred again... "Victory Lap" instantly becomes his highest charting song, ditto his collaborators. Fred again.. had previously charted at #13 with "leavemealone", while Skepta got to #33 with "Praise The Lord (Da Shine)". They're contributing to a legendary run at #4 for Ravyn Lenae, up to 5 weeks now, but I wouldn't count her out necessarily. As promised last week, Disco Lines gets a first top 10 hit, and Tinashe gets a second. Olivia Dean also reaches the top 50 for the first time. Benson Boone gets a first ever #1 album here, to which you probably have to give credit to the people who went out and bought it because I don't think the streaming numbers were stellar enough to do it on their own. Maybe he's also lucky to get in while he could because it looks like the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack should make a big leap next week, while also Lorde will be gunning for a 4th #1 album. In-between, we've got YUNGBLUD picking up a 3rd top 10 album, though his last one made it to #1. Haim can't quite keep up their streak as they land at #20. Managing to find a way to enter is the return of Killing Heidi's debut album "Reflector". If you're not an Australian millennial, they're a rock band from Victoria with a lot of buzz at the turn of the millennium, culminating in a #1 single with "Mascara / Leave Me Alone" ("Weir" is also a banger). I always thought they were on the soundtrack to the 21 years old (this week) "Spider-Man 2", but even today on Australian streaming services, you don't find their hit "I Am" (Australia did later get Tonight Alive onto one of the Andrew Garfield ones). A name so underground I can't say I'd heard of them before is rock singer Karly Jewell, who's managed to land in the top 40 this week, ahead of everyone's favourite Christopher Moltisanti typo, Loyle Carner, who charts for the first time.

In a world of uncontrollable chaos, feel comfort in knowing that it'll very likely stay at #1 next week. The dreaded third week slip is coming for Sabrina Carpenter, so while she might actually stay at #2, she's only moving further away from the target. There's actually a crazy gap in the middle of the Spotify top 10 at the moment, #5 has an over 50% lead ahead of #7! If nothing else it means you may be able to lock in Fred again.. with his first ever top 10 hit, but more on that next week. Also possibly vying for the top 10 is this week's highest debut from Disco Lines & Tinashe. It wouldn't be Tinashe's first top 10 hit as "All My Friends" reached #3 in early 2016. For Disco Lines this is a first time entry. The Black Eyed Peas return to the top 50 for the first time since 2016, with the unlikely candidate of "Rock That Body". This particular song (well, most notable Black Eyed Peas songs) comes in as part of a remarkable chart feat, when The Black Eyed Peas managed 15 consecutive top 10 hits over the course of 8 years, starting with "Where Is The Love?" and ending when "Don't Stop The Party" could only manage #16. For the second week in a row, we've got an Australian #1, and this time they were actually born here. It's the debut solo outing for 5 Seconds of Summer's Calum Hood coming in at #1, following the efforts of bandmate Luke Hemmings who also scored a #1 album back in 2021. Just behind him is even more AusCon, as we've got a big, big sound from the west of the town, it's the sound of the mighty OneFour. Well, maybe that's not how you'd describe Sydney drill as a sound but it's been a long time coming for this group's debut album. Much like Toby Greene, the media are always left in a bind as their talent & popularity comes to a head with their constant litigation issues. A more common sight in the top 5 is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The only bizarre thing is that they released the lead single to "Phantom Island" last year and you'd think they'd have put out multiple albums since then. The real stunning moment of the week is that Pitbull's Greatest Hits has managed to climb to #7 in a week with all these debuts, implying he could reach the top 5 soon. Lil Tecca scores his 3rd top 50 album, a bit higher than the last one, not as high as the first. You've probably heard the news about the ARIA Chart going forward. It'll be a while before it comes through but get ready for me to say a million variations on 'this artist has charted higher than their previous album but that's probably just because a lot of the albums that otherwise would have beaten them are no longer appearing on the chart'.

If I ever come across as an ardent Ed Sheeran stan, it's only because he attracts a certain backlash that is so asinine and deranged that any level-headed approach is going to look glowing in comparison (either because he's unfathomably successful, or so antithetical to certain music discussion circles that it's shooting fish in a barrel, or both). I'd just ignore it but to leave it all unopposed is to create the illusion of unchallenged approval. Otherwise I think an under-acknowledged aspect of the DSP wars is just how much exclusive use of one of them is going to re-shape the fundamentals of your own music taste. Normalising otherwise niche sounds, starving previously approved ones. It's a remarkably interesting aspect of national & global music consumption habits. I can't take anyone seriously who chooses to weaponise it to say 'x artist is overrepresented because y platform doesn't count'. It's always used as a detraction which just implies a self-centred approach that can't possibly comprehend people like different music to you, and are valid for doing so.

This is something the head of ARIA has actually said years ago. They were hesitant to introduce these kinds of rules because the reality of the situation is that local music was continuing to perform worse and worse (haven't had an Australian #1 single since 2022, haven't had a top 10 since early 2024, haven't had a top 20 since late 2024, last new top 50 hit was in February I think). The fact that I see people in the US & UK clambering for new stipulations just shows that putting a band-aid over a decelerating chart does nothing to mitigate it, it only hides it temporarily. The only way this changes anything for local artists is if it incentivises their labels to promote their singles more, but if they need the published side of the ARIA Chart to do that, then that's a bigger story than anything else here. Would you rather have a #45 hit that moves 2,000 units or a #55 hit than moves 4,000 units?

Consider me curious to see how it plays out, but I suspect this isn't the Hail Mary it appears to be, for those whom it's a concern (much rather the chart to be unfiltered personally). If there's a global sentiment that Australia's charts are slower than the rest of the world, I suspect no one's compared the raw data to other charts, which is to say that this is true even excusing chart idiosyncrasies. We always have less & lower entries on Fridays than everywhere else, and far more oldies on our Spotify charts. I think a combination of us being so isolated and our ahead time zone means that we aren't treated to the same degree of promotion, and all our global news cycles come through either while we're sleeping or a day late, so there just isn't the same urgency to it. Even Aotearoa's charts are faster than ours, although I might pin that down to it being a far smaller country, which allows things to spread more quickly. Anyone who thinks that "Iris" and "Dreams" are singlehandedly hiding new Australian hits from us are going to be very disappointed to learn it's not the case, you'd more likely just pull back in songs like "I Love You, I'm Sorry" or "Not Like Us" to put a few more superficial top 50 weeks on their resumes. More pressingly though, I feel like we're gonna see some peculiar cases when exclusions fall under awkward timing. Unless the label intervened, I believe "Pink Pony Club" would have run out its 10 week grace period before it even hit the top 50, so it would end up as a #52 hit, never allowed to reach #2 like it did in reality. More likely to get screwed over though would be "Cruel Summer", a song that meandered in the top 10 for ages before belatedly hitting #1. Either you get a chart run that ends pre-maturely, or they try to stitch it together and you get an inane two-part chart run where the song just gets to re-enter at #1, who wants that? No doubt we'll just be treated to further examples that test the cut off points of these rules and make an even messier chart that just desensitizes you to a lot of activity that feels artificial, because you know it doesn't reflect consumer habits correctly.

Better than all of those other songs though? It made 4 year end charts that I can see: Australia, Belgium (Wallonia), Canada & USA. In every single one of those lists, at least 3/9 of the other songs placed higher (7 of them in Australia). Everywhere you look it's the same chart run, high debut and then sputters out without really stabilising at any point. It couldn't hold in the top 50 for more than 13 weeks anywhere, even in Canada where it was a #1 hit. The main point is that a lot of the time even when it seems certain that songs don't have legs, it doesn't always pan out that way.

Just want to note that it's a fallacy to treat every single (even by major artists) as if they're written specifically to be instant #1 hits, especially if they just don't sound like it. To avoid the negatively associated buzzwords, sometimes they can just be made to show the range & potential of the album in question, and probably helps the bottom line a lot in the long run. Often times also these songs that appear to be coasting or underwhelming just don't fit the vibe of the top 40 but then go on to do really well after the fact. Just want to note that the song actually had 130,000 listeners on last.fm by the time "Good Luck, Babe!" was released, more than 10% of its current total, which is not too shabby.

Well, it's not really a record because a bunch of songs have done more than that, really, Alex is about halfway to Tones and I's record. He'll have to contend with Sabrina Carpenter from here on though, who's keeping him honest at the moment although we've previously seen songs like this completely sputter their momentum on week 3 or so, so it remains to be seen. Fleetwood Mac now do have the record for the longest running top 50 hit, although maybe some purists will suggest it doesn't fully count as part of that tally pre-dates the ARIA Chart itself. We've got some climbers into the chart this week. Addison Rae gets a second top 50 hit, while Remi Wolf gets her first...nah not really it's just Lola Young. Ed Sheeran also debuts with "Sapphire". Back in 2007, Kaiser Chiefs' "Ruby" reached #35 on the Digital Tracks chart but was not eligible for the main chart as I think it didn't have a physical release. I lean towards saying that Ed Sheeran's Gen 3 Pokémon equivalent has probably charted higher. While the Barbenheimer war of Addison Rae & Turnstile was taking place, a third contender inevitably rose to conquer, as he always does. Jimmy Barnes (ahhh, clouds) scores his 16th #1 album, extending his lead as the artist with the most #1 albums. My Chemical Romance just miss out on a Fetty Wap, as "Three Cheers For Sweet Romance" takes a chunk out of its previous #38 peak to a #16 one. What a belter of an album though am I right fellow millennials? If like Tony Soprano, you prefer to only have some Pulp, then you better look away because we've got "More" Pulp instead. This is actually their second highest charting album ever in Australia, only "This Is Hardcore" which got to #15 did better.

Considering how quickly the narrative last week went from 'it's so over' to 'we're so back', I don't think there's any reason to be super confident on next week's chart based on 1 day of data.

Ah right. I can still lean to understanding where he's coming from because in my limited experience of getting to be the centre of attention like this (and moreover, talking to people who've experienced it more viscerally), it's genuinely taxing on all faculties. I wouldn't be surprised if this chart battle wasn't even on his radar (he's already hit #1 after all), until he just got inundated with vile messages by people who don't know what grass looks like. I do agree that there's some level of responsibility on celebrities to keep their fanbases in check (or at least not stoke the flames), but I'd be surprised if the lion's share of Sabrina's hate messages are coming from ardent Alex Warren stans (not necessarily insinuating the other way either, Twitter's just a cesspit of bad vibes). He's probably not seeing the stuff that gets said about her anyway.

That's such an unmemorable number that I can never think of another song that's done it...oh hey, Bryan Adams did that. Sometimes I'm taken by surprise by high debuts but I think at this point he's gonna hold it again next week. Tate McRae debuts at #5 which is her equal highest debut with "greedy" managing the same. I don't think this one will take off to the same extent but the movie comes out in a few weeks and that can always do unpredictable things for soundtrack hits. Fleetwood Mac tie Lewis Capaldi's record for the most weeks in the top 50, and with momentum like this, nothing is gonna stop them from going one better unless ARIA unexpectedly announce a rule change. There's a first time entry for a bunch of artists at once at #50 with "Shake It To The Max (FLY)". This has also subsequently reminded me of the song "Show Me Love", that probably should have been a comfortable top 50 hit (maybe even top 20?) but ARIA haven't been including points for the remix, so it hasn't gotten especially close. Morgan Wallen manages a 3rd straight week at #1. I expect he won't make it again next week because surely we're due, and alongside anything I haven't thought of, we've got a new Jimmy Barnes album incoming and he's pretty good at hitting #1. That's something I thought in my head applied to Miley Cyrus but she seems to be on a once-a-decade basis and she's already had her 2020s one, so she can only get to #4. She's also been overshadowed by the Taylor Swift masters announcement, which notably sees "reputation" climb all the way back to #2. I can't call it a comeback because the album has literally never left the top 100 since it came out. "1989" also comes somewhat close to overtaking the newer version of it, something that I felt was already very slowly pacing its way to happening, but now feels inevitable. It's worth noting that ARIA has a recurrency system for albums that fall out of the top 150 for 8 weeks in a row, so "1989" wasn't extremely far away from this which would've possibly prevented it from returning to the chart (it's still allowed in, but it'd need to be re-submitted to the system). In a big week for new vinyl releases, the winner of the pack is actually the debut album for Cloud Control from 2010, and they're rewarded with a new peak for their efforts. I really wanted to say they've made some chart symmetry with triple j's Hottest 100 but they've fallen 1 place short of the #18 finish that the song "There's Nothing In The Water We Can't Fight" managed.

Fair enough in general but I think you might be reading too much into an Instagram story with no caption? I don't necessarily disagree in the case of Travis Scott (although I'm not sure I've seen him say anything about it, I don't always keep up with that sort of minutiae), but unless there's TMZ footage of Alex Warren cackling as he sends the all-clear to Warner employees to mass-consume and astroturf his single, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt!

Initially the 3rd movie was supposed to end at the fairground with the three main characters surviving but test audiences weren't satisfied so they filmed the train sequence months later (not long before it came out!), they were supposed to also get her and the cop from FD2 on the train but one of the actors was busy so they left them out. No doubt in my mind they absolutely want to kill her off for good in a future film, death doesn't like loose ends etc.

The thing that ends up happening usually is that by over-policing the chart with exclusions (or effective exclusions), you don't really change the state of play for those 'new' songs that are advantaged, and you create a chart with greater magnitudes of difference between the top and the bottom. So what happens is that whatever is left over, just runs out of close competition and will just sit still for those 10 weeks before being forced off (I hope that makes sense but I could possibly try to draw a diagram to demonstrate it). Externally also, you can go so far as to create a chart that no longer feels like it reflects reality in a sense. Like how often do most people look at the trending chart on Spotify? It can be a little interesting in highlighting new budding hits, but deep down, I'm just too aware of the bigger picture that it doesn't feel like it resembles anything genuine. Aggressive exclusion will accomplish that same experience on the official chart. The fact of the matter is that music consumption habits nowadays don't make for a satisfying parabola chart run, or at least not in a short period of time. For another example, check out ARIA's New Music Singles Chart. It's a chart that excludes everything that's over 4 months old (usually, "Back To Friends" shouldn't be there), and this is the chart you tend to get. 1 or 2 proper debuts a week, mostly peaking very quickly, and everything else largely stuck in place because the gaps between the chart positions are so wide, the bottom of the chart looking interesting on paper but it's usually just debuts/re-entries being sucked in from #21 through the latest song aging out of it.

Yeah, the seasonal thing did come to mind actually, these are the only two countries I can see sufficient stats for that just started winter, but on the other hand, last year the song just rebounded a week later like nothing happened. Either it's a single algorithmic glitch, or it's an algorithmic quirk that's made someone go 'hang on, we need our mandated 80K daily "Riptide" streams' and then it gets 'fixed'.

Hey, remember a year ago when I said "Riptide" was exhibiting a huge boost everywhere but Australia & New Zealand (where it actually dropped a lot)? Would you believe that exactly a year later the same thing has happened?

Bear in mind that unless you're deep in the trenches of TikTok & other social media with a genuinely open mind about these things, it's totally normal to have not gotten across someone's breakthrough moment while it's happening. Exhibit: These are the last.fm stats for Olivia Rodrigo's "drivers license", on Jan 14th, 2021 (less than a week after release), and now I'll accept some data imperfection as it's likely that people have made accounts in the past 4 years who were in fact onto the song straight away, but for a platform that generally exhibits itself to be ahead of the curve, that's still only about 6% of its lifetime listeners were there on week one (also a reminder that the song was doing 13 million streams a day on Spotify at this point). It's not so weird to be part of the 94%! (Also to anyone who thinks an immediate lifetime cap on contributing streams will help new songs on the chart, peep that 12 scrobbles per person ratio that Olivia was already holding after 5 days. That replay-ability is what's making these smash hits happen).

As best I can tell, his lead is actually increasing at the moment, so 11 seems a pretty likely bet. I don't want to make any assumptions beyond that because yesterday's Spotify chart was a little erratic and hints a potential paradigm shift, though not one that could feasibly get through with half a week left to go. Alex Warren also has another debut, giving him 3 simultaneous top 20 entries. I'm going to assume he didn't intentionally ape the subtitle of a very popular film in the box office at the moment, but it would've given him the chance to make the funniest music video. This is Jelly Roll's second appearance in the Australian top 50, following his Eminem collaboration last year. I promised myself on my blog last month that I wasn't going to write anything more about MGK and so he has a debut here, but you'll have to go somewhere else to get your regular dopamine fix from hearing someone say his music is bad and feeling gratified that you already decided that anyway. Morgan Wallen makes it two weeks at #1. I didn't write anything last week but I hadn't realised in that moment that his last album "One Thing At A Time" didn't actually debut at #1, falling short of a fairly incumbent Harry Styles. He did some Australian promo soon after though and the album ended up spending two non-consecutive weeks at #1 later on, so this new one has already matched that. The other very fascinating news this week is the incredulous vaults of Pitbull, who has now gotten his "Greatest Hits" set all the way into the top 10 at #9. Maroon 5 have been trying to do this for like 5 years now and this guy just waltzes in like it's no big deal. He's still seeing streaming gains this week so he might even climb some more, not to mention he has an Australian tour later this year, what an odd result. We've got some extremely Australian millennial nostalgia going on this week as well, as Kisschasy's second album returns to the chart, this week as the highest Australian album which it couldn't manage when it debuted at #5 back in 2007. You might know it as the album that has the song "Opinions Won't Keep You Warm At Night", which I always remember as the song that spent the longest time on the jtv Saturday countdown in its day, with its immortal chorus of 'SOMETIMES, ~incomprehensible words follow~ AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID'. Then lastly we've got another Australian debut from Private Function, the punk band that embody the tag to the fullest with their memorable antics and marketing tactics. Their Wikipedia page is a worthwhile read.

Point of the market decline rule is that in theory, everything is seeing a general decline, so if you're declining less than everything else, you probably would be gaining under usual circumstances. It'd be like for instance if there's a big World Cup game on, and suddenly a large swathe of the population who might otherwise be listening to music for some of those 2 hours are glued to the game, causing a slight dip pretty much across the board. There may be edge cases, a bunch of people who were listening to the new Sleep Token album when it came out probably didn't just listen to the same amount of music the week before or after, so that's a slight market shift that's not massively affecting anything else. I could see the argument then that they shouldn't have it both ways, and so a market increase shouldn't allow for ACR dodging if the individual increase is less than the market, but I think the point of the set up is to try and be certain that the songs are on their way out, and 3 consecutive declines beyond the market is reasonable enough proof to them. Unless there's solid evidence to suggest an increased volume of serial ACR dodgers that are singlehandedly preventing livelier chart activity, I don't think the OCC are going to see any problem with what's going on at the moment. Although maybe I'm wrong to say that given how readily they've jumped the gun on this before.

What I meant to say was that if you got rid of the 3 track rule, there just wouldn't be anywhere near the disruption that might have felt like the inevitable future of the charts at that point. Those 4 albums I mentioned were all released in the space of 2 months. No single album in 2025 so far has matched any of them for just how much streaming real estate they took up. I looked through the year of Spotify charts and only really Central Cee managed more than 5-6 entries at once, he had 8 songs in the Spotify top 50. All of those albums I mentioned had more than that, including a Drake album that was released this year (Kendrick had a good showing late last year, but still less than he had with "DAMN."). I know Taylor Swift is still more than capable of doing this and it's a matter of time, but I don't think anyone in 2017 was suggesting this sort of chart activity was on the way out. If anything it felt like more and more artists were going to be capable of doing it. With that in mind, it feels like the OCC over-reacted to a future they couldn't fully predict. You're right that it still happens a lot on the Billboard Hot 100, but I think America has a more fragmented melting pot of music taste that more easily allows it to happen (or maybe music promotion is just more aggressive, I'm not sure). Enough to even offset the radio airplay factor that stacks the deck against it. That and the Hot 100 is arguably excluding way more songs to reach their #100 than the UK charts, so I'd hesitate to acknowledge it as significantly below the top 50 zone with all the recurrency. I get that a lot of people dislike those weeks on the chart but I've always found them exciting and interesting as a disruption of the humdrum weeks, and a chance for a lot of really interesting stuff to appear on the chart that would never make it through the usual cycle of single promotion on playlists & the radio. Really, I just like the charts not to be tampered with; give us the raw data, not a false image of what the general public is listening to.
