The previous comment about it not being challenged continues to be true, except now it's not even really catching back up to the pack, we could be here a while. If you're here for insightful and interesting Linkin Park takes, I don't have it. I haven't even listened to it yet. I can say that it's their first top 30 hit since 2009's "New Divide", following a run of 6 straight top 50 hits that didn't quite get that high. It's the only new entry this week too, but we should have some more next week too that I still haven't listened to. My excuse is that if labels are willing to screw over the midnight Australia market for their big deal releases then they have to face the microscopic consequence that I'll miss them on my New Music Friday listen throughs, tipping the scales with a pebble that will surely make them stop doing this. Anyway the Bubbling Under chart just got bigger again. It's done so in a very funny way because "Close To You" and "28" are actually debuts to this chart. Despite the former reaching #34 on the chart about 3 months ago, it never quite squeezed in. Now it's much lower and manages to get through. Hoist your klaxons because it's back, and I ain't talkin' about a Thomas Pynchon novel. I'm talking about 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨, and this time it's a 4th #1 album for Missy Higgins. Famous for a style of singing that would probably not please Henry Higgins (although he does like a challenge), she hit #1 with ease with her first 3 albums. That was roughly 10-20 years ago and she's constantly not come close to the top since. She just performed "Scar" at triple j's One Night Stand concert with G Flip though so the nostalgia cycle is back, baby. You might actually also know that song even if you're not Australian, because it's the aggressively Australian song that gets slotted into The Axis Of Awesome's "4 Chords" song, and I bet I've made this exact same reference when one of her other albums has charted. Or to make this more modern and quickly dated, I guess we making triangles squeeze through circles now. After some mysterious circumstances where Fred again.. charted out of sync with the New Zealand charts (and very out of sync with the UK), he's back and charting ever-so-slightly higher than ever, this time at #3. David Gilmour also debuts in the top 10. 9 years ago Lana Del Rey stopped him from hitting #1. I forget what band he's from. Laufey gets yet another vinyl boost, while Vance Joy gets a minor one too. I say minor because he's always charting just a bit shy of the chart anyway, but this boost will keep him away from recurrency rules for a long while yet. Also I'm going to readily assume that there aren't any GWS Giants fans reading this and so I can safely say holy shit how good was the footy on the weekend?
  3. Bud Abbott & Lou Costello were an American comedy duo circa the 1940s. They're best known nowadays for their sketch where an attempt to name players on a baseball team devolves into lunacy due to the players having names that sound like parts of speech, and neither speaker being able to come to terms with the other's misinterpretation of what's being said. It's incredibly sharply written and delivered. I couldn't help but notice the similarity to the conversation that took place above my post.
  4. This is a good Abbott & Costello bit thank you

I reckon what we'd find out is what we already knew, K-Pop fans are the most dedicated fans, and whether deliberately or by nature, they'd flood the album chart and people would find new ways to say it doesn't count because it doesn't fit their personal narrative of what *should* be the most popular albums.

But what does this actually accomplish? You've still got the same state of things just with the numbers tinkered around. As I was kind of saying in my previous post, what's the significant distinction between studio albums & greatest hits that the latter needs to be punished? Because the latter has an easier time charting despite there being less intrinsic attachment to it as a product because it's not an individual artistic statement? If that's the case, then they're already punished by the fact that surely less people will buy them (ignoring the fact that people do still buy them). But for instance, Olivia Rodrigo's "SOUR" received (according to kworb) 6.4 million streams yesterday. The least popular track is "hope ur ok" and that had 130 thousand streams. Even if absolutely nobody streamed that one song on its own, that's at most about a quarter of its streams coming from full listens. In reality, it's probably way less. Any studio album with legs on the chart is going to be subject to the same sort of cherry-picking as a Greatest Hits album. This is all just the nature of the attention & listening cycle nowadays. I'm yet to see a 'solution' that doesn't just create a different status quo to get bored and annoyed with.

Don't expect that to change any time soon. It is receding back to the pack, but it could do that for weeks and go unchallenged. The interesting one to note in the Sabrina Carpenter affairs is "Bed Chem" which manages to climb into the top 10 on its second week, and is generally holding pretty steady even in its 3rd week. Perhaps greater hit potential in the pipeline. I didn't get a chance to say last week that "The Door" is sneaking into the top 50 with help from the points provided by the CYRIL remix, but it's getting pretty close to the point where I'd say that it could get there without it. Gigi Perez scores a first top 50 hit. I don't have anything to say on that but it should keep climbing next week. Once again the Bubbling Under expands. We're gonna lose all of Billie Eilish's tracks next week so it's really gonna push the depths. As a bonus, we have a song that actually could be considered Bubbling Under, as The Kid LAROI comes through with "BABY I'M BACK". It doesn't look like it's gonna make the top 50 next week so I'll just say that this is a particularly Australian coded interpolation. Not just because the Player song "Baby Come Back" gets used memorably on The Simpsons, but also because Ocean Alley once covered the song for Like A Version and it was a particularly popular one. I wouldn't normally leap at the chance to promote international artists on an Australian entry, but I just have to point out how distracting the title is, as one of my favourite songs released last year is "BABY I'M HOME" by Odetari, Kanii & 9lives. Future classic I'm sure. Sabrina Carpenter is also #1 on the album chart for a second week. Once again we are robbed of an Australian artist at #1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have had two #1 albums in the past. It's the only debut this week, but we are treated to a new peak with Oasis's re-release. Though it had a lengthy chart run, "Definitely Maybe" only peaked at #23. Improving to #10 this week, now every Oasis studio album has hit the top 10. Luke Combs also gets a proper physical release that sees him back in the top 50.

So I've said in the past that I wouldn't mind Greatest Hits* compilations being shipped off to their own charts, but I have to wonder what does it actually accomplish in terms of the greater good of the chart? You'll see less brick wall big WI numbers but is there really all that much worthwhile in those positions below the top 100 that are being shoved out of the way? I feel like all of the full-intent album listening experiences kind of cancel each other out and you're just left with 'which album has the biggest 3rd single?' Are we truly enriched if an album has a chart run of 1-56-98-out instead of 1-85-out? I guess if there's an example worth looking at, it's New Zealand's album chart. They kick off any album that's been there for more than 18 months into a catalogue chart, a rule that's been enacted so many times that the catalogue chart houses higher sales once you go beyond the top end of both charts. Both charts are top 40s, but it feels like the official chart stretches that top 40 to the point that #40 is probably around #120 in reality. But is the chart more interesting for it? Not really. Removing so many albums just means that the live remaining ones have less ranks to slip through. It's a lot of treading water until their own 78 week limit runs out. So I guess I can't think of anything that would realistically liven up the album chart and make it interesting in the way that it once was, without tearing it all down into something that scarcely reflects reality (and will probably become stale and uninteresting once the novelty wears off). It's probably best off just leaving it to its own natural behaviour. *But even then, are hit packed albums like "Teenage Dream", "AM", "Divinely Uninspired..." etc that much functionally different to Greatest Hits? Reading the album chart week on week and these albums sure do walk, swim & quack like a duck
  11. ^ Tend to agree. "Divide" used to feel like a permanent top 20 fixture until it wasn't. He's slipped down the general streaming pecking order over the last couple of years. 2 years ago he was #1 on Spotify listeners, currently he's #18 @1546532865780989952 (tweet is 8 months after his album btw, so no particular recency bias)

  13. Feel like I have to get it out there again, "End Of Beginning" was not a super obscure song prior to 2024. I remember hearing quite a bit of buzz about him when the singles & album came out in 2022. I even saved a couple back then (including "End Of Beginning"), and while I don't have the numbers on hand, I remember thinking at the time 'wow, this guy's got a lot of streams'. Note: I did not know he was in Stranger Things at the time. Something interesting I think is that we're inclined to clown on labels for fumbling the bag but in general they often know way more than they let on. There was a phenom I noticed years ago on the Australian chart, where some songs from big album releases would just end up missing on that week's chart. This still happens as recently as this week, but what I remember thinking at the time is that the songs they left off were disproportionately the ones that would end up being big hits down the line. Stuff like The Kid LAROI's "WITHOUT YOU" and Pop Smoke's "What You Know Bout Love". Our charts have had a history of labels holding back chart debuts so they can enter higher up and look like more of a success (it sounds a lot better that "WITHOUT YOU" debuted in the top 10, rather than below the top 50, regardless of the context. Oh look, it's even the first sentence in the 'Chart Performance' section on Wikipedia). It also probably helps give whatever platforms they're promoting to an easier time spotting out 'the hit' when it's not crowded around a bunch of other songs from that album. Point I'm making with this is that in these cases, though the shorthand is often to say 'wow, it went viral on TikTok, that's crazy', in reality I think it's often way more planned and anticipated than it seems. Whether that means astroturfing or just a really keen ear for these things, I can't say (probably case by case anyway), but I do suspect that a lot of hits aren't necessarily the flukes they're made to look like.

Billie Eilish I am sleepy, here is your chart. I will just note the notables, which is that the unexplainables are back, "Coincidence" and "Don't Smile" are missing from the chart, and would probably be in the top 40. Also for the first time in many months, we have a Bubbling Under chart again. It's not much right now but expect it to grow in the coming weeks.
  15. That's also one that's hard to define, some songs just get radio airplay on random whims. In the case of Led Zeppelin, the image on the song's Wikipedia article is literally a sleeve sent to radio stations by Atlantic Records. Discogs tells me that this was put out in 1972 (the album was Nov 1971). I'd say that's sufficient enough to call it radio promo.
  16. For what it's worth, "'Till I Collapse" is the most streamed non-single on Spotify.* But defining singles is tricky, especially nowadays where you're less likely to get definitive physical releases. Like if we're being strict, "Last Night" by Morgan Wallen was never released as a single. It doesn't have artwork, or a music video. It was released before the album, but part of a "3 Songs At A Time Sampler" (which still didn't have its own artwork). The only thing it has going for it to define it as a single is that it got promoted to radio, but then so did "Stairway To Heaven". A lot of the time it feels like a technicality as to what is and isn't a single, and very rarely do I see it consistently followed. *At least that's what Wikipedia says, but then I think it should be "I Wanna Be Yours" by Arctic Monkeys? I can't see anything that makes it a single
  17. *The Gotye stan from 2007 has logged on* While I'll concede that I doubt anyone anticipated the degree of success, it was coming off a (locally) big deal album, was released on a major label, had a high effort/concept music video (it was actually newsworthy in Australia when it got leaked early by accident), and it was on the iTunes front page immediately on release. Alongside Kimbra being poised for a big breakout year on a major label (again locally, but it did happen), my hunch is that it *is* a song that everyone involved in it expected big things from. His previous album was that accidental hit.
  18. Never said it was a sole factor. But even that being said, the gap between top 10 & top 200 is not anywhere near as big as it sounds.
  19. Could also be worth considering that streaming services *are* discovery platforms. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that if you spend any amount of time being influenced by them, it'll probably shift your taste in music a bit, making those little differences between the charts grow over time.

I belatedly finished watching it just now, have been avoiding this thread for ages  Feel like US Mole needs to work better with the editing to make it properly suspenseful. They do so many tricks that unravel themselves once you're used to them. Wish I could remember better what happened in season 1, but they went this whole season never eliminating the first person called after the quiz (or have it be the very last person, I think). I'm used to the possibility on Australian & Dutch Mole where they're called in a genuinely random order and it's way better for the viewer, even if it can muck with the pacing. They also just can't help putting in countdown timers at the end of challenges to show that they barely got through in time, but the host & contestants never seem to relay it so it just seems deliberately fake and just tells you the challenge is about to end, but that they were never in danger of running out of time. The confessionals is the biggest problem though I think. I was kinda geared towards Ryan & Sean by process of elimination halfway in (though I thought if it was Ryan, she's really bad at lying and strategising with the fortune cookie challenge), because they spent the whole season showing and telling us that Michael is purposely sabotaging, and Muna only stopped doing it when she figured out who the Mole was and realised she should be getting some more money. Hannah was so confident that she was always going to lose a quiz, and then all you've got left is Sean blending into the background. They only gave up the conceit on the last episode because they both knew it and Muna kept saying 'Sean is the Mole' so many times they couldn't get around it, so they had to can it quickly and put more suspense on who won  But I think the biggest problem they've got is that they need to axe these possibilities to drain the entire pot. They did it twice this season, and all I can think of from a Mole perspective is that Sean knows what challenges are coming up, he knows the Prisoner's Dilemma and the way people act. He should be working his butt off in the early challenges to succeed and look like a hero because at the end of the day, all that money is probably gonna be lost anyway. It's a classic Mole strategy of not sabotaging, but putting in work where the net result goes nowhere. And as a viewer, if you know the Mole knows this is gonna happen, then there's no point in speculating because your suspicions, like the money, basically have to be reset. I wanna be double, triple, quadruple bluffed and go away from the last episode thinking I've been played. It's all very professionally edited, slick and fun to watch, but as a game it falls a little short.

The Southern River Band 49 46 024 01 ETERNAL SUNSHINE Ariana Grande 50 58 145 01 RED (TAYLOR'S VERSION) Taylor Swift "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" is #1 for a 2nd week in a row. I do not think it will be #1 next week but I can't say for sure what will replace it. I suspect it could be any of three songs by a certain Saffron City gym leader with a penchant for woodwork. This week's chart gives a good argument to say that it could be "Taste" though because arriving in the top 10 this week is Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars, who spent the first two days of the week at #76 and #43 on Spotify, adding to my recent feeling that something has changed in the system to help debuts get a better impression than they once did (it may be YouTube). I neglected to mention last week but isn't it interesting that 7 of the top 8 have gone to #1? Also isn't it interesting that "Apple" definitely debuted at #18, and has spent its entire chart run at that position. She's got a long way to go to match the funny chart run moments of LunchMoney Lewis or Mumford & Sons. Not much else to note except for Mark Ambor being on fraud watch. We have gotten very close to returning the classic Bubbling Under segment though. "WILDFLOWER" is #20 on the New Music chart this week leaving very little space to hide, and perhaps next week's chart shake up could get us there. Cold Chisel score their 6th #1 album this week with a compilation. I will never stop my tradition of blurting out 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨 until maybe next week probably. It gives me the opportunity to point out that when I say Jimmy Barnes has more #1 albums than anyone else, I'm not even including these 6 albums in the tally, and it also gives me the opportunity to say yes, that Jimmy Barnes, the cowboy screaming in the clouds guy. It means that once again, Post Malone is denied a #1 album, still only having two to his name from the 2010s. If you take a shot at the king, you best not miss. Also entering this week is Melbourne trio Telenova. They've been putting out some pleasantly catchy singles for several years now (big fan of and myself). I am less familiar with The Southern River Band despite the fact that they're from the same city as me in Perth, but they also sneak through to get their first ever entry.
  25. I dunno I think it's a bigger mockery if the song that's supposed to go to #1 misses out because of an arbitrary reset ratio.
