Wires crossed here a bit. I believe kworb's data is correct (it comes directly from charts.spotify), but you're only looking at the single day increase (10/10 vs. 03/10), whereas Emails is looking at the whole week (basically 7 of those increases). When kworb's weekly chart updates later tonight it'll say the same thing. As for the increase, it's going from 699,504 to 969,089, you divide the difference into the first value and it gets you a 38.5% increase, I'm guessing the 28% comes from using the other as a denominator.

Love the search function on this site, top marks I'll also add to this that if ACR was heightened, you'll probably get a nice bit of relief on that week, but then all those songs that might still be hanging around at lower spots will do just that (with less movement because they need to fluctuate more to move the needle) and at best, it will just be a new bland state of affairs that'll need a rule fix in a few years.

It'll be #1 again next week I'm pretty sure. The other interesting Sabrina Carpenter thing going on here is that despite quite a bit of chaos in the positions of some of her entries, "Bed Chem" has managed to sit at a peak of #10 for a 5th consecutive week. There's a decent chance it'll land there again, as The Weeknd's "Timeless" is the big competition. It's dwindled in other countries, but The Weeknd is currently touring Australia so that's combatting the anchor. "Take Me To Church" has been a streaming behemoth for quite some time, but this week it actually manages to get back into the top 50 for the first time since 2015. Hozier will be in the country soon so it could get even higher. Sabrina Carpenter has a 5th week at #1 on the album chart. Most of the album is still on the Spotify chart so that sets a bar that's hard to beat. Maybe Coldplay can do it? The British band that can't is Bring Me The Horizon, whose full physical release brings them to a new peak of #2 (prev. #4). We've also got the ominous arrival of that Ed Sheeran collection, and get to anticipate what the week 2 & week 3 movement will be. In saying that, Foo Fighters' "Essential" album just fell out of the top 50 for the first time since debuting 2 years ago, so you can't always overestimate the longevity (as I eye the teetering "Diamonds"). Also I suspect you're familiar with the words 'Taylor's Version', what if I told you that Australia can do this as well. In 2014, The Amity Affliction reached their highest high of popularity, you could even say the same for metalcore. Not before or since have we ever seen songs that dominate digital sales over and over again (The Amity Affliction have three top 30 singles). The second of their 4 consecutive #1 albums, "Let The Ocean Take Me" was a massive success that spent 5 months in the top 50. Thanks to industry rule #4080, the band see very little profit from its sales (your target of ire this time is Roadrunner Records), and so they have re-recorded it. There's also a new peak for Chappell Roan in the top 5 (prev. #4). I'm not quite as familiar with the next Australian debut which is Posseshot at #21. I do know of The Rions who previously won triple j's Unearthed High competition allowing them to hit the big stage before even graduating. They've been putting out music for a few years now and get their first charting album. Also Alex Warren sneaks into the top 50 with one of those albums that has a lot of singles and suspiciously low streams for the few remaining deep cuts. He's on the rise though so hard to say where this album is gonna generally reside.

Oh and as it were, Australia and New Zealand were completely unaffected by whatever this is, yet every other country sees this boost. "Yellow" did get a massive decline though so the two aren't necessarily one to one linked. As to the reason behind it, it's possible that it's intentional, but it also might just be algorithm quirks. The sorts that can just happen by accident. I always suspect that no one intentionally made "Harness Your Hopes" by Pavement a big thing, but a Spotify algorithm made it happen.

In case you were wondering though, Katy Perry's last 3 albums have debuted at #2, and given that she was just here, maybe this one won't collapse so dramatically.

Would like to thank Katy Perry for singing "Roar" and giving the Lions the morale boost to get their first premiership since I was in primary school :cheeseblock:

It has resumed declining which will open up the door for "Die With A Smile". That's on the upswing with a new peak this week and has the power of margin slimming sales on its side. It'll probably take at least another week of catch up though. As a frequent user of Microsoft Excel, I love the way Tate McRae has capitalised her new song which comes in hot at #14. It looks pretty steady at the moment but maybe it'll get the shot in the arm needed to go top 10 eventually. I have less faith in The Weeknd, who has debuted in the top 20 but already dropped out of the Spotify top 50. He is supposed to be coming to Australia eventually but given his last cancellation, the buzz isn't super high right now. We've sort of got Australian content as Charli XCX is assisted by Troye Sivan to another top 50 hit, with a song that shares its title with a George Maple song. Speaking of Australian song titles, Addison Rae gets her first ever top 50 entry. Back in 2020, "Addison Rae" was the title of one of The Kid LAROI's first hits. By an amusing coincidence, she has landed next to The Kid LAROI for two weeks in a row, as last weeks' Bubbling Under with this week's LW data confirms they were #51 & #52 last week. The Kid LAROI is still on the Bubbling Under chart but now he's girt by Playboi Carti & Teddy Swims, two artists I'm sure have a lot of fanbase crossover, who will both probably tumble next week. On the album chart, Sabrina Carpenter gets a 3rd week at #1. We see a fairly rare instance of a physical rebound buoyed by CDs and not vinyl as Eminem returns to #2. I could've sworn he had a vinyl release already but maybe they've been delayed and he's gonna get another decent showing at some point in the future. Oddly enough, Laufey actually climbed to #1 on the vinyl chart this week despite declining on the overall chart. Imagine if she could just get everyone to buy the album on the same week. In my experience with encountering new artists in the 2020s, I'd have put a fairly solid bet on Keshi being Australian an Surf Trash being American, but I would be so wrong as to be backwards on that call. Also I once again get to experience the anticipation of the Brisbane Lions playing in the AFL Grand Final, hopefully with a win this time. I can relate this to music because amidst all the very brave declarations on the quality of Katy Perry's new album, she'll be performing at the event, and given the perennial nature of "Teenage Dream" on the album chart, we'll probably see the effect. It will be mildly funny if she ends up performing "Roar" and "Dark Horse", the former is self-explanatory given the Lions' theme song ends with a mighty roar (I'll also note that there is a Tigers team and they finished in last place, oops), and the latter is funny because the Sydney Swans coach who will also be in the grand final is nicknamed 'Horse', although arguably the Lions are the dark horse here. Also it's funny because did I ever mention that "Dark Horse" never charted in Australia? I'm sure I did. Anyway, peep the #AFLGrandFinal hashtag on Saturday if you want to see Australian Gen Xers & Boomers give their thoughts on Katy Perry, and see if she actually performs something from her new album.

Strangely Australia missed the memo on that rebound, it's gone 77-165-162. Reminds me of earlier this year when "Riptide" was exhibiting odd behaviour everywhere except Australia. What's odd though is that this isn't even the first aberration for "Evergreen". Just a month ago it collapsed into a new, lower equilibrium, after an already strange steady climb the month before. Used to attribute this to big playlists but I don't think there is one with this much influence, let alone two. The last.fm graph is so weird

Has 2024 been the most boring year in UK chart history?
Justin Bieber really fell off that "Believe" high with his less successful follow up album "Justice", yes. Reason chart companies aren't interested in these sorts of simplistic quick fixes, aside from there being nothing in it for them, is because they have the common sense to pick them apart. I almost guarantee that every single 'this will fix the charts' solution that I see pop up will almost certainly either not help it, make it worse, or be so ineffectual that it'll be rendered insufficient in due time. Best anyone can really do is vote with their ears.

"Evergreen" just lost 30-40% of its streams in every major market in a single day yesterday.

The previous comment about it not being challenged continues to be true, except now it's not even really catching back up to the pack, we could be here a while. If you're here for insightful and interesting Linkin Park takes, I don't have it. I haven't even listened to it yet. I can say that it's their first top 30 hit since 2009's "New Divide", following a run of 6 straight top 50 hits that didn't quite get that high. It's the only new entry this week too, but we should have some more next week too that I still haven't listened to. My excuse is that if labels are willing to screw over the midnight Australia market for their big deal releases then they have to face the microscopic consequence that I'll miss them on my New Music Friday listen throughs, tipping the scales with a pebble that will surely make them stop doing this. Anyway the Bubbling Under chart just got bigger again. It's done so in a very funny way because "Close To You" and "28" are actually debuts to this chart. Despite the former reaching #34 on the chart about 3 months ago, it never quite squeezed in. Now it's much lower and manages to get through. Hoist your klaxons because it's back, and I ain't talkin' about a Thomas Pynchon novel. I'm talking about 🚨🚨 AUSTRALIAN #1 ALBUM ALERT 🚨🚨, and this time it's a 4th #1 album for Missy Higgins. Famous for a style of singing that would probably not please Henry Higgins (although he does like a challenge), she hit #1 with ease with her first 3 albums. That was roughly 10-20 years ago and she's constantly not come close to the top since. She just performed "Scar" at triple j's One Night Stand concert with G Flip though so the nostalgia cycle is back, baby. You might actually also know that song even if you're not Australian, because it's the aggressively Australian song that gets slotted into The Axis Of Awesome's "4 Chords" song, and I bet I've made this exact same reference when one of her other albums has charted. Or to make this more modern and quickly dated, I guess we making triangles squeeze through circles now. After some mysterious circumstances where Fred again.. charted out of sync with the New Zealand charts (and very out of sync with the UK), he's back and charting ever-so-slightly higher than ever, this time at #3. David Gilmour also debuts in the top 10. 9 years ago Lana Del Rey stopped him from hitting #1. I forget what band he's from. Laufey gets yet another vinyl boost, while Vance Joy gets a minor one too. I say minor because he's always charting just a bit shy of the chart anyway, but this boost will keep him away from recurrency rules for a long while yet. Also I'm going to readily assume that there aren't any GWS Giants fans reading this and so I can safely say holy shit how good was the footy on the weekend?

Bud Abbott & Lou Costello were an American comedy duo circa the 1940s. They're best known nowadays for their sketch where an attempt to name players on a baseball team devolves into lunacy due to the players having names that sound like parts of speech, and neither speaker being able to come to terms with the other's misinterpretation of what's being said. It's incredibly sharply written and delivered. I couldn't help but notice the similarity to the conversation that took place above my post.

The STATE of the album chart~
I reckon what we'd find out is what we already knew, K-Pop fans are the most dedicated fans, and whether deliberately or by nature, they'd flood the album chart and people would find new ways to say it doesn't count because it doesn't fit their personal narrative of what *should* be the most popular albums.
-
The STATE of the album chart~
But what does this actually accomplish? You've still got the same state of things just with the numbers tinkered around. As I was kind of saying in my previous post, what's the significant distinction between studio albums & greatest hits that the latter needs to be punished? Because the latter has an easier time charting despite there being less intrinsic attachment to it as a product because it's not an individual artistic statement? If that's the case, then they're already punished by the fact that surely less people will buy them (ignoring the fact that people do still buy them). But for instance, Olivia Rodrigo's "SOUR" received (according to kworb) 6.4 million streams yesterday. The least popular track is "hope ur ok" and that had 130 thousand streams. Even if absolutely nobody streamed that one song on its own, that's at most about a quarter of its streams coming from full listens. In reality, it's probably way less. Any studio album with legs on the chart is going to be subject to the same sort of cherry-picking as a Greatest Hits album. This is all just the nature of the attention & listening cycle nowadays. I'm yet to see a 'solution' that doesn't just create a different status quo to get bored and annoyed with.

Don't expect that to change any time soon. It is receding back to the pack, but it could do that for weeks and go unchallenged. The interesting one to note in the Sabrina Carpenter affairs is "Bed Chem" which manages to climb into the top 10 on its second week, and is generally holding pretty steady even in its 3rd week. Perhaps greater hit potential in the pipeline. I didn't get a chance to say last week that "The Door" is sneaking into the top 50 with help from the points provided by the CYRIL remix, but it's getting pretty close to the point where I'd say that it could get there without it. Gigi Perez scores a first top 50 hit. I don't have anything to say on that but it should keep climbing next week. Once again the Bubbling Under expands. We're gonna lose all of Billie Eilish's tracks next week so it's really gonna push the depths. As a bonus, we have a song that actually could be considered Bubbling Under, as The Kid LAROI comes through with "BABY I'M BACK". It doesn't look like it's gonna make the top 50 next week so I'll just say that this is a particularly Australian coded interpolation. Not just because the Player song "Baby Come Back" gets used memorably on The Simpsons, but also because Ocean Alley once covered the song for Like A Version and it was a particularly popular one. I wouldn't normally leap at the chance to promote international artists on an Australian entry, but I just have to point out how distracting the title is, as one of my favourite songs released last year is "BABY I'M HOME" by Odetari, Kanii & 9lives. Future classic I'm sure. Sabrina Carpenter is also #1 on the album chart for a second week. Once again we are robbed of an Australian artist at #1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have had two #1 albums in the past. It's the only debut this week, but we are treated to a new peak with Oasis's re-release. Though it had a lengthy chart run, "Definitely Maybe" only peaked at #23. Improving to #10 this week, now every Oasis studio album has hit the top 10. Luke Combs also gets a proper physical release that sees him back in the top 50.

The STATE of the album chart~
So I've said in the past that I wouldn't mind Greatest Hits* compilations being shipped off to their own charts, but I have to wonder what does it actually accomplish in terms of the greater good of the chart? You'll see less brick wall big WI numbers but is there really all that much worthwhile in those positions below the top 100 that are being shoved out of the way? I feel like all of the full-intent album listening experiences kind of cancel each other out and you're just left with 'which album has the biggest 3rd single?' Are we truly enriched if an album has a chart run of 1-56-98-out instead of 1-85-out? I guess if there's an example worth looking at, it's New Zealand's album chart. They kick off any album that's been there for more than 18 months into a catalogue chart, a rule that's been enacted so many times that the catalogue chart houses higher sales once you go beyond the top end of both charts. Both charts are top 40s, but it feels like the official chart stretches that top 40 to the point that #40 is probably around #120 in reality. But is the chart more interesting for it? Not really. Removing so many albums just means that the live remaining ones have less ranks to slip through. It's a lot of treading water until their own 78 week limit runs out. So I guess I can't think of anything that would realistically liven up the album chart and make it interesting in the way that it once was, without tearing it all down into something that scarcely reflects reality (and will probably become stale and uninteresting once the novelty wears off). It's probably best off just leaving it to its own natural behaviour. *But even then, are hit packed albums like "Teenage Dream", "AM", "Divinely Uninspired..." etc that much functionally different to Greatest Hits? Reading the album chart week on week and these albums sure do walk, swim & quack like a duck
