Noahspike's Top 50 - April 2015
:o So what's the verdict?! :bounce: Brandon's got 80s-inspired amazingness absolutely nailed for the new album if the preview tracks are anything to go by, which I see you're loving too :D. 'Can't Deny My Love' would still be my favourite of them but 'Lonely Town' is magnificent, I agree! Interesting that 'Habib Galbi' was a grower for you as it was a big one for me as well, although the video helped it click majorly on my second listen so I'm glad at least that that happened before I voted and I could give it the high points it deserved. ^_^ Well I've just revisited 'Chains' as I was intrigued to see you hate it and I really like it :o! Definitely nowhere near as infectious as 'Jealous' though, of course. Haha, Taylor just about hanging in there! Just a case of me not returning to it too much last month. A single announcement/video would likely lead to a nice boost but we have to endure 'Bad Blood' before that ever happens it seems. Thanks for commenting, James! Gah, I'm really hoping 'Preach' somehow manages to go top 40 this Sunday! They really deserve recognition and have already had a near miss with 'Dance On My Own'. :drama: Clearly the standard of Brandon's new material is very high when you describe your least favourite as a 'great song' (and I agree completely, though the worst IMO is 'Still Want You', which I listen to all the time and is probably only a 9/10 ). Re: Sia, I'd heard both 'Big Girls Cry' and 'Fire Meet Gasoline' months ago but somehow they sound much better to me now they're getting attention and have videos, which annoys me slightly as I'm clearly very easily manipulated :arrr: but whatever, they're great songs and will likely climb here next month! Haha, great to get the all-important subtitle approval from yourself *.* Cheers Mango! Haha saaaaaaaame, I was really loving the video (and his dance-trashing of the kitchen was largely amazing) but flinging pancake batter around the place is A STEP TOO FAR . I actually had to look away for that bit - it was my 'What Kind of Man' car scene :drama:. And thanks, I really like that collab and hadn't known before hearing it that Tinashe has such a good voice. :o Ehhhhhh, regarding 'No Way No': :winner: gurl bai x I didn't realise we have so little overlap - clearly I need to bombard you with more links! :magic: 'Good Goes The Bye' was the unlucky #51, no word of a lie! Just lost out to 'Out of the Woods', which I'm quite fond of if you didn't know already. :) Thanks Jordan! Ah, well I'd highly recommend you check out 'Moments' if you're a fan of an impactful chorus, Harry! That's really one of the big selling points of Tove's songs for me. ^_^ Speaking of big choruses, great to see another fan of 'Itch'! It's been growing steadily on me after initially thinking it wasn't as good as their past stuff. I'd really love to get an album from them. Cheers Harry. :D :hi: Seven! Yesssss the funky instrumentation in 'King Kunta' complements Kendrick's harsh, scratchy vocals/verses perfectly and it's all quite a (almost summery sounding?) bop :music:. It'll almost definitely be a climber next month. :D 'Hemiplegia' only came to my attention a couple of months ago via the trailer for 'Cake' (a movie about a woman suffering from chronic pain, so an apt soundtrack) and I've since been listening to it a lot. A really gorgeous song with striking lyrics. Thanks!

Perseventyfive™ // Confirmation
Ooh, interesting both that someone entered 'No Words' and that it was vetoed (despite there being barely any responses in its thread, where the sender and anyone else should feel free to comment any time! :funky:) . It would have been a strong contender for my 18 points but I'm happy in a way that it didn't make it through as I prefer having as many new discoveries as possible. ^_^

Kwabs - Love + War
Gah, the album has been pushed back to September :(. An understandable move after the single did precisely nothing, but still disappointing. 'Perfect Ruin' is a truly stunning track when it's given time but I did think its subtlety meant it mightn't be suitable as a lead single. Really hoping he comes up with something appropriate to get the attention he deserves and most importantly that the album does eventually see the light of day. :/

Miguel - Wildheart
Thought all the ad libs from the rap onwards seemed like overkill and a bit grating on first listen but this is sounding absolutely sublime after a couple more plays, especially the verses . Always loved Miguel's smooth vocals on the few tracks of his I've heard ('Adorn' being up there as one of my most-played songs of the last few years) and 'Kaleidoscope Dream' has been an album I've been meaning to get around to hearing for ages so I'm excited to check out his stuff now, new and old. ^_^

I know they had a performance on The Voice of Ireland (which must have been on release week, going by that chart run).

Ultraviolence's Personal Top 40 Chart W/E 26th April
Well we share three favourites then, as mine are 'I'm A Ruin', 'Happy' and 'Froot'. :D Checked out 'Holes In The Sky' and it's quite beautiful :o and yeah, it builds very nicely from when the drums kick in. I agree with you about 'Bad Dream' - it didn't leave too much of an impression but I really love Chloe's voice and lyrics so it's great to hear new stuff from her anyhow. Just caught up with new Muse - liking both tracks on first listen but prefer 'Psycho' (although the spoken/shouting parts are a bit jarring as of now but I doubt that'll matter after more listens) and I definitely get the comparison to 'Uprising', which I've always loved.

Brandon Flowers - The Desired Effect
Blown away by 'Lonely Town'! Such an interesting structure and the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink 80s production is amazing. I had to check I wasn't accidentally playing another song over it towards the end . Can't wait for this album even more now!

Nadine and Nicola appear at the British LGBT Awards
I feel like the two pictures at the top aptly sum up why they don't get on! They've always seemed like two very different people. (Also, Kimberley )

Chlöe Howl - Bad Dream
Good to hear something new from her but it doesn't sound like much more than a decent album track really (if only a Chlöe Howl album track was actually a thing ).

Ultraviolence's Personal Top 40 Chart W/E 26th April
:hi: Ultra! Nice #1! 'Blue' wasn't a huge standout for me but still a solid effort with a particularly catchy bridge. I thought the album was pretty strong throughout and could become my favourite of Marina's in time. I quite liked that 'Baby Love' song the one time I heard it but the video freaked me out a little . Clearly a very interesting artist though! I'm very fond of 'Je Te Suivrai' and unfortunately it only properly grew on me after I voted so apologies for not giving it more points -_-. Such a great chorus. There's quite a bit here that I need to check out, it seems :o. I love HAIM but haven't heard 'Holes In The Sky' and the same goes for Chloe Howl's new one. Also haven't got around to hearing Muse's 'Psycho' yet but the fact it was a #1 for you bodes well!

Joseph's Hit 40 | Week 175
Hi Joseph! 'Hole In My Heart' is quite good, and I'm glad it scraped the top 40, but I'd like to think Luke's capable of better so looking forward to hearing the second single. I definitely thought he showed a lot of promise on XF in a similar way to how Olly Murs did so it'd be great to see him realise that potential with the right material. The Actual Republic has been very much on form of late for me as I loved 'Cold War' and I'd say 'Nån gång' has now become my favourite of your entries! Thanks for the discoveries! Great to see Hozier's 'Someone New' doing well here! Thought it was a bit of a bizarre single choice at first (as a few others on the album seem way stronger to me) but it's nice and light in contrast to 'Take Me To Church' and probably one of his most accessible tracks so it does make sense as a follow-up release. Delighted it's poised to crack the top 40 soon anyway. :D Also loving MO's 'Preach', particularly alongside the video . Another strong single from an exciting group but unlikely to do much commercially it seems. :/ Surprised to see 'Jealous' only debuting now :o. Presumably you heard it a while ago but only recently came around to it? Really liking a lot of other stuff here, particularly 'Big Girls Cry', 'Lean On' and 'Talking Body'.

One Last Time • 4th Single
Indeed and it'd also be great to see it become her fourth (or fifth including 'Bang Bang') top 10 US hit from the album as it's currently #13 on the Hot 100. I've a feeling that'll be its peak or it'll just fall short though with airplay seemingly peaking now, unless she has a performance or something lined up soon (maybe the Billboard Music Awards in a few weeks?). I've been playing this song loads over the last few months and it remains spectacular.

Nothing But Thieves 'Itch'
http://birminghampromoters.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Nothing-But-Thieves-8001.jpg Hype seems to be slowly building around this Southend band who've been likened to early Muse, with them currently touring the US while their latest single 'Itch' has just made Radio 1's B List (following 'Ban All The Music', which was playlisted in February). No solid details of an album yet but they've released three singles since last year's 'Graveyard Whistling' EP. I absolutely adore the lead singer/Conor's distinctly emotive voice and haven't heard a below par track from them yet, with the anthemic 'Graveyard Whistling', the stripped-back ballad 'Lover, Please Stay' and the rockier 'Wake Up Call' and 'Itch' being particular standouts. Really hoping they have a bit of a commercial breakthrough soon and get an album together. Any other fans here?! ORQX4QQwmII zi5hKext4z0 DCCAEcuOk_g

Jessie J - Flashlight
It's pleasant enough and could be much worse as there's a distinct lack of oversinging in parts for a Jessie J song but it's still incredibly generic and nondescript. Watching the video made me wonder if she enjoys and believes in what she does now and actually had me feeling a bit sorry for her ! It seems that she/her team are just taking absolutely any opportunity that comes her way to maintain her profile (the Tuc crackers promotional stuff being a prime example) without any concern for quality control or an ounce of artistry to be seen. Her career trajectory kind of fascinates me.

Come Fly With Me: TV FLASHBACK
Great to see a thread on this show! I remember watching the first episode with my extended family on Christmas Day 2010 and it was probably the highlight of the whole day as everyone was in stitches (and mostly drunk at the time, which helped of course). I always thought it was underrated, which is understandable following 'Little Britain' but the characters are just as quotable and well played IMO. Having watched a bit of 'Airline' years ago, I think what made 'Come Fly With Me' work was that it was a very accurate parody in the way it was shot and produced, and some of the characters relatively true to life! Precious was a definite highlight of mine as well along with Melody and Keeley (if only for the way the latter pronounces 'check-in'). I looooooved Judith and Peter too and the way she'd never let him speak, even when she'd just repeat what he was trying to say. Of those not mentioned, I can think of the Immigration Officer Ian Foot, whose sketches could be quite funny, the two lazy paparazzi, the baggage handlers who steal stuff and that old woman Hetty Wolf who spends the day trolling Moses! Not sure if there are any other notable ones but I enjoyed most of the characters. I used to quote that all the time as well! I definitely can't see or hear Martin Clunes without thinking of his Japanese fanbase anyway.

iLL Blu feat. James Morrison - Lonely People
I initially found the chorus of this a bit underwhelming and still slightly prefer the verses but the whole thing's really growing on me now. I've always liked James' voice and it complements the track very well. Hope this is a decent-sized hit. ^_^

♥ HausChart ♥ 20/04/15
Hellooooooo, WD on slaying BJKO! :party2: Haven't heard your #1 but have been meaning to due to the outcry(wolf) after it DNQ'd. Poor Chez as it seems to have really connected with a fair few people, probably much more than most of the finalists have with others so it's unfortunate. -_- The jury's still out for 'American Oxygen' but of the rest of your top 10, I love 'King Kunta' (currently boppin' my head to it actually), 'Dynamite' and obviously 'Hush' (at #4 no less :o)! Nice to see 'Champagne Kisses' debuting here. It's very slowly growing on me thanks in part to the excellent video. I thought the videos for Jessie's lead singles this era were underwhelming but strangely have improved a lot (while clearly still on a low budget) for the post-album singles. The one for 'You and I (Forever)' is particularly lovely. BY THE WAY I listened to 'Confessions...' the other night :o and you'll be happy to know I enjoyed it, especially those transitions! It's a solid pop album as you indicated with a fair bit of interesting ~experimentation~ which still sounds good 10 years on. I'd forgotten how great 'Sorry' was and particularly liked 'Let It Will Be' (eh?!) and 'Forbidden Love' on first listen but absolutely hated 'I Love New York', like what is that??? - I couldn't even bring myself to like it ironically! :puke2: (Thanks for the recommendation though!) EDIT: Also, you called Jessie's song 'Champagne Showers' :P. That Natalia Kills cultural relevance *.*

Brandon Flowers - The Desired Effect
I wasn't sold at all after hearing 'Still Want You' but it's sounding so good now after a few more listens. A nice simple song to follow the more intricate 'Can't Deny My Love' (which is still slaying me on at least a daily basis ).

randomfurlong | 2014
Glad to see the top 10 revealed as I had a lot of faves throughout the rest of the chart and it definitely doesn't disappoint. :D 'Crying For No Reason' was also #3 on my own EOY. I love the progression on that track - the way Katy's voice and lyrics are front and centre at the start and then the crash of production after 'full force' powering through to the end . The whole thing's executed so perfectly and was such a deserved big hit for her. Adore 'Take Shelter' as well as 'Froot' and 'Happy' (which are two major standouts on a great album for me), and 'Touch', 'Uptown Funk' and '2 On' are all excellent, though I seem to be very much in the minority on here in preferring 'Pretend' to the latter! Great countdown and very nice job on the commentaries as well!
