Well an easy case in point is Amarillo from a few years back. It was on TV channels and all over the radio less than two weeks before release. And what happened? It sold near 250k two weeks in a row and went on to sell close to 1.2m. I know it's a charity single etc etc, but it's still an interesting point.

The mega amount of new entries is for one week only, as i've slightly amended the rules so that now a song can enter two weeks before its physical release - rather than the previous one - but even this can't dislodge Chris Cornell, who enjoys a fourth week on top. Following him in behind - for the fourth week running - is 'Knights Of Cydonia', the former number one from Muse, which enjoys the best opening to a chart run since - ironically - Supermassive Black Hole spent its first eight weeks at number one. Eric Prydz climbs six places to number three to become the highest placed dance track in a chart saturated by it. The early months of the year always seem to provide a plethora of dance tracks, and it's very welcome to blast away the post-Christmas cobwebs and the bleak January weather. Other high placed dance tracks include Sharam 'PATT' (6-5), Cascada 'Truly Madly Deeply' (7-7) and Booty Luv 'Boogie 2Nite' (13-9). A re-recording, and re-issue of The Automatic track 'Raoul' occupies the number four slot - ten months after its original release - and instantly beats its original peak of number nine by a whopping five places. It should climb in the coming weeks. Now to round up all the other new entries in brief; Evanescence enter at number six with the heavy 'Lithium', Just Jack makes a very confident debut on the chart as his track 'Starz In Their Eyes' enters at number ten, Amy Winehouse - with a little help from Ghostface Killah - debuts at number 15 with 'You Know I'm No Good' - and The View claim their third top twenty hit with 'Same Jeans', another track set to climb over the next few weeks. Other new entries include; Freemasons - 'Rain Down Love' (number 22), Jamie T - 'Calm Down Dearest' (number 25), The Ordinary Boys - 'I Luv U' (number 34), Meat Loaf - 'Blind As A Bat' (number 36), Guillemots - 'Annie Let's Not Wait' (number 38), Nerina Pallot - 'Learning To Breathe' (number 44), JoJo - 'Too Little Too Late' (number 48) - and Jarvis just misses the Top 50, with his track 'Don't Let Him Waste Your Time' lingering at number 51. Chris Cornell's brilliant Bond theme You Know My Name knocks down the Muse epic Knights Of Cydonia to clinch number one - and more importantly become favourite for the Christmas No.1 in the process. The Top 2 were far and away the best tracks of the week, easily keeping a lock-out ahead of The Fratellis and Scissor Sisters who were in turn very comfortable ahead of No.5 downwards. Climbing four places to No.5 is the Lostprophets track Can't Catch Tomorrow, which becomes their second highest charting single in the process, with every chance of beating the No.4 peak of Rooftops. Girls Aloud return after just an 8 week absence with a brilliant electro-pop cover of Tiffany's I Think We're Alone Now. However the version i'm charting is the Greatest Hits version, as the single version is somehow stripped of all the brilliance, and becomes a little weird. Elsewhere in a week of fairly large changes, Embrace return to the Top Ten in time for Christmas with the epic track I Can't Come Down. It's their third top ten of the year (Nature's Law - No.7, World At Your Feet - No.4), after previous track Target stalled at No.17. Nelly Furtado holds steady at No.8, while a kid I shouldn't really like returns to the Top Ten. Lil' Chris horribly catchy debut track Checkin' It Out made an amazing No.3 for me in October, and he even more amazingly proves he's no one-hit wonder by climbing to No.9 with follow-up Gettin' Enough?? - though no doubt due to some heavy Buzzcocks-borrowing. Also returning to the Top Ten just in time for Christmas is everyone's favourite miserable festive track by The Pogues - all the more loved these days due to the untimely death of Kirsty MacColl. Other movers of note in the top fifty include Lily Allen (25-16), Wolfmother (41-25), Cascada (45-31) and Gwen Stefani (66-48). Following on from the solitary week at the summit for Starlight, and the massive 8 weeks for Supermassive Black Hole, it now means that Muse have been top of the chart in no less than 11 of the 48 weeks so far in 2006. Following them just behind is Whistle For The Choir, the highest ever peaking track from The Fratellis. They first came into the limelight earlier this year with the limited release of Creepin' Up The Backstairs (a track which never charted for me). Since then however they have released Henrietta (No.6), and the massive Chelsea Dagger (No.4), and both reside inside the Top 30 YTD chart. Elsewhere, The Feeling spend a third week at number three, The Killers drop to four with Bones, a slight disappointment after the success of When You Were Young. Also moving on a fairly static week near the top end, Kasabian move 4-5, Bodyrox climb 8-7, and Nelly Furtado climbs to number 8. Scissor Sisters make a positive return after the super-smash I Don't Feel Like Dancin', and hit number six with Land Of A Thousand Words. Generally not known for their slower tempo numbers, this is a good example however and could climb as Christmas draws ever nearer. Climbing into the Top Ten this week are Infernal with Self Control, a track I have to admit took ages to really grow on me (hence its slow climb), this could be an even bigger climber in the next few weeks, so watch out. Completing the new entries are Jamelia (No.20), Slade's classic Xmas track (No.24), Babyshambles (No.31), Embrace (No.34) and Pussycat Dolls (No.43).
