Agree with Sam in the other thread that this was very 8/10 and I was also a little bored at times. Saying that, there were loads of really intense scenes that did have me gripped and although it's not the most daringly directed film, I did really like the use of circling shots from Spielberg. Yay at Meryl snatching the Oscar nomination because it was one of her best roles in quite a few years in my opinion, it's nice to see her do more understated performances from time to time. Hanks was very charismatic too but I guess he'll just be snubbed forevermore by the looks of things  I liked the cheeky wink-at-the-audience style ending too, so here for the US government lies movie universe. (Shout out to the score from John Williams too, I've been listening to it a fair bit since seeing the film. He definitely should have been nominated for this over Star Wars which was nothing new or special). Also, I've never been more turned on in my life than during the newspaper printing press scenes  I could've watched that for hours...

I'd agree with Jack that I appreciated how amusing it was (I certainly wasn't expecting it to have as many laughs as it did, it almost reminded me of Stephen Frears films at times with the sense of humour) but I really lost interest towards the end. I'm not a history buff at all so I was never going to love this but by the third act, I was really struggling to stay entertained. The Underground scene was just silly too, the movie makes it seem like the reason why Churchill didn't surrender to Hitler is because he talked to some random people on a train. It was also a really long scene and threw of the pacing entirely and the film never recovered after that for me. Gary Oldman had a brilliant transformation here (a lot of that is down to the make-up, of course, but that's not to take away from his performance which was very impressive too. I never once felt like I was watching Gary Oldman on-screen.) but it definitely feels like he's going to win the Oscar for the MOST acting rather than the BEST acting. Timmy Chalamet really should be walking away with that but Oldman's overdue narrative is just too strong
  3. Saw the trailer again for this today and I'm kind of shocked at how little excitement I have for this. The first one is one of my favourite movies ever and I could watch A-list actors and actresses having shitloads of fun singing ABBA songs all day but I just don't get why they've done a flashback sequel, who wants that? Lily James is literally the only famous name in the cast from the flashback scenes and it looks like there's very little Meryl too from the first trailer. Getting very worried this is going to be a bit rubbish
  4. 60. Sing I had a fun time watching this the first time at the cinema but I've seen it a few times since then because of my sister and have gone off it a little bit. It is another one of those animated films that is just a little too childish still and although it did make me laugh a few times, there just wasn't enough here to enjoy as an adult. The characters were fun though (I especially enjoyed the pig duet) and the songs were pretty catchy (although a few more original songs would've been nice) and I'd still watch it again in the future - I just appreciate/prefer the more adult themes covered by the likes of Pixar in their animated films. 61. Loving I missed this at the cinemas during awards season and was pretty gutted because I do like to see all the acting nominees from each year if possible. I wasn't massively anticipating it because the trailer seemed pretty dull to me so I was surprised at how much I ended up liking it. There were certainly slow moments and times where I was a little bored but to counter that, there were some especially touching scenes that really stood out and stuck with me. Ruth Negga was excellent and it's not hard to see why she became an Oscar nominee last year even if I'm still a bit bitter about the Amy Adams snub. Joel Edgerton was just as good too so I'm shocked that he wasn't more competitive for an Oscar nomination last year either. 62. Baby Driver Probably upsetting a few more people here by not having this really high too but I would probably single it out as THE most overrated film of 2017. I may not have loved the films but I was in awe at the technical aspects of films like Dunkirk and Blade Runner whereas I just didn't really see anything special with this at all. It was just a generic action movie synced to a bit of music at times. I had quite a good time watching this to be fair because the action as fairly fun and Ansel was such a charismatic lead. I usually find both him and Lily James pretty boring in films but they both shined lots here, the best roles yet for both of them. 63. Flatliners I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this as I haven't seen the first film but I was expecting more of a sci-fi film from the trailer rather than the horror film that it basically was. I always say horror isn't my thing as I'm easily spooked but I liked this because it didn't give me nightmares for weeks on end but still had me jumping out of my skin in places. For example, scenes like Ellen Page's death were so unnerving and eerie and the film did a really good job of making it so tense in the final act. James Norton was the stand out for me in the cast though (plus, he is insanely hot ) 64. Going in Style This is basically the definition of a B-list comedy, it's totally forgettable and not all that funny but it's impossible to not enjoy. The three leads had all good chemistry and it was just a laugh to see three Oscar winners muck about a bit now they're older and have so much fun in a film like this. Alan Arkin is probably my least favourite actor of the three (I've seen less of his films anyway) but he was my highlight of this and definitely had the best material here to work with.
  5. You'll definitely have a laugh during it either way so I would recommend it. I had fun and I'm not even remotely a history buff... Thanks for commenting Grant! Oops, you can't please everyone :heehee: I'm a blockbuster fan at heart so it'll probably only get worse from here :heehee: Cheers for the comment Pavel ! I can appreciate objectively that those two are very well made films and are technically very impressive but there was just not loads of entertainment value in either of those for me and I don't exactly enjoy going to the cinema to sit and be bored (for well over two hours in Blade Runner's case...) My bottom three from the Best Picture line-up last year was Fences, Moonlight and Hell or High Water. None of them were particularly thrilling and I wouldn't watch them again out of choice... Thanks for commenting Chez! :D Even I am the only person I know of that has neither LOVED or HATED it  I liked it a fair bit but a lot of it went over my head to be honest until I did further reading on it :drama: Thanks for commenting Klaus!

pjWz3WDtGPI I absolutely adore both Vikander and McAvoy so I am interested in seeing this depending on how wide the release is in the UK. I can't say the trailer is particularly thrilling though, hopefully the film itself is a bit more exciting :heehee: :drama:
  7. 65. Mother! Mother was one of the most divisive films of the year and I definitely fall on the 'like' side of the fence for this film. There were certainly some shocking moments which were really tough to watch at times (especially what happens to the baby) and I must admit that I didn't really get what the film was about until reading up on it further later on. Coming out of the film, I wasn't the biggest fan of the film and was just left a bit confused at what I'd watched but after researching the Bible references and searching the net for different interpretations, I realised how exciting it was that the film could have so many hidden meanings and little Easter eggs. I'm still not intelligent enough to comprehend the film on my own but it did shoot up a lot in my rankings after reading other people's opinions of the film online. 66. The Mountain Between Us This was never the type of film that I was going to absolutely adore as it is a very run-of-the-mill drama and there are hundreds of films just like it but I did think it was pretty cute despite being very forgettable. Kate Winslet is one of my favourite actresses at the moment so her being the lead actress definitely helped me enjoy it a little more than I otherwise would have but the film itself was decent enough to keep me entertained for the whole runtime. The multiple fake-out death scenes got a bit tedious towards the end but I am glad the characters survived as they were very likeable and the ending was rather sweet too. 67. The Circle I know this got really bad reviews from critics but I must admit that I enjoyed it a fair bit. I really liked the idea of the Circle and I found the buildings there really exciting to explore on-screen. The visual effects and ideas were really cool and I was having a great time in the first act finding out about all this new technology. Tom Hanks was incredibly charismatic here too (as usual) and had me hanging on his every word, a really convincing character portrayal of a Steve Jobs type of character. However, some of the scenes such as the bridge death were just a bit too on-the-nose and a bit more subtlety may have been nice. 68. Daddy's Home 2 The first Daddy's Home film landed at #15 on my EOY back in 2015 so it's probably rather obvious that this was a little bit of a disappointment in comparison. I did have fun watching it still and I quite liked the idea of bringing in the grandparents even if Bad Moms definitely did that idea better. However, so many more jokes fell flat this time and I found myself cringing a lot more in the sequel than I did in the first film. Also, I was hoping John Cena would be a bigger part of the film than he actually was after he was teased at the end of the first film :( 69. Despicable Me 3 I've talked before about hitting the age where animated films mainly aimed at kids just aren't my cup of tea anymore and because of that, I would rank this as my least favourite Despicable Me movie to date. In reality, it's probably no worse than the other instalments but I just find myself eye-rolling now at a lot of the humour and cringing a lot at other parts. Saying that, these films are still a lot of fun and I had a good 90 minutes watching it. Balthazar Bratt was a great villain though just because of how bonkers the character was, the scenes involving him did put a smile on my face - I'd love for him to appear again in future sequels!
  8. Glad you're enjoying the countdown. A Monsters Call is a cute film - I would recommend it still even if it's not really high here in my countdown. Thanks for commenting Dalek!

The soundtrack for this is absolutely gorgeous, Alexandre Desplat nailing it yet again! That's really getting me even more excited to see this now - I've booked in to see the Unlimited Screening next week but I'm not entirely sure if I'll be able to go or not yet...

Christopher Plummer also becomes the oldest acting nominee ever at 88 years old *.* He wouldn't have been in my personal top five but props to him for breaking such an impressive record!!!

In other huge news for Mudbound, I've just found out that Rachel Morrison is the first EVER female cinematographer to be nominated in that category. Crazy that it took 90 years for that to happen so big congratulations to her! *.*

The voting for Animated Feature changed this year which was always more likely to favour blockbuster animated films. In the past, only voters from the animated branch were able to vote meaning they were much more likely to favour niche films. From this year, any Academy member can vote in that category just like Best Picture meaning most people are just gonna nominate what they see at the cinema with their little ones. Expect to see many more nominees in the future like The Boss Baby and Ferdinand which probably would have just been Golden Globes fodder in the past :(
