  2. Maybe all it takes to get this thing going again is someone to ask for it, so here it is: can we have the next bunch of songs, please?
  3. The decision might not be up to the label, but the timing can be influenced: once she's asked, she doesn't have to be involved straight away, it's possible to wait a while until the airing of the program can coincide with her other activities.
  4. I guess it's the right time to wish her a very happy birthday!
  5. I love this song, not only for the obvious reason that it's great fun to listen to, but also for representing what was so special about them: such a bold choice as the first single of the second album (especially if we consider ) - they chose to take a risk and it paid off.
  6. Couldn't agree more. I think the most unfortunate consequence of the lack of commercial success is that we seem to miss her best years as a performing artist. It was obvious since PSTR how talented she was, but she really came into her own around Tangled Up, only one album later the band practically stopped - before she even turned 24. Since then, there was one solo album, a brief comeback with GA for a few songs and a tour, and who knows when we'll hear her sing again. I wish she had at least toured the album. It obviously would have been on a much smaller scale than what she was used to with Girls Aloud, but maybe doing festivals and small gigs would have given more exposure than the branding route (ie naming her fans before she had any for her own work) they went for.
  7. When I wrote that, she had more than half the year to prove me wrong, which - apparently - wasn't that high on her agenda for some reason :) Anyway, if it turns out in the next 2 years (or further down the line) that I was completely right, I should start a cult or a religion or something....
  8. I just couldn't help myself... Anyway, happy Girls Aloud Day, everyone!

  10. I seem to remember reading in the very first post.
  11. I'm looking forward to doing this, but I'd like to clarify the use of 11 - I assumed it can be awarded to just one song, but the only vote so far used it 4 times, and there were no objections.
  12. They shot the video for this exactly 10 years ago:
  13. The last of the Girls has left her twenties behind today (doesn't look like she has though :D) In case she's reading this (and why wouldn't she?): happy birthday, Ms Roberts!
  14. WARNING: this is going to be long. I enjoyed reading this very well worked out "fantasy Chemistry-era" a lot, and I was toying with the idea of presenting an alternative perspective on it, a kind of "why it didn't happen like this" (so if you're familiar with what was going on with the Girls at the time, I'll be stating the obvious quite a bit here), then I forgot about it, and now I was reminded by another topic. Anyway, here it is: Long Hot Summer This wasn't really chosen as a single: they had the opportunity to do a song for a movie, which is always a good way to reach a new audience (and Jump worked really well for them earlier), so they took it. I even think if they weren't such a single-orientated band, it wouldn't necessairly have made the album. Biology After almost 10 years, still brilliant. Enough said. See The Day Putting this on the album is pretty much pointless, unless it's a single. If they just wanted to have another slow one besides Whole Lotta History, Nobody But You (which is actually my favourite ballad from them) would have done perfectly. Also, it seems to me that they felt some pressure to do covers at the time. Their singles weren't played to death on the radio, and programmers are slightly less reluctant to put stuff on their playlists that's already familiar to their audience. I think after finishing the Greatest Hits Tour, they re-thought some things: they kind of gave up making it outside the UK, and with a best-selling compilation album and 2 arena tours behind them, plus a record breaking top 10 run still going, they felt big enough to do whatever they wanted to, and care less about expectations, so they pretty much stopped doing covers and ballads (well, for 6 years at least) on albums. On another note, I don't really think the song helped the album that much: it was released on the week leading up to Christmas, when sales are always higher than usual, and the album was only out for two weeks, which they were heavily promoting. I'm not saying it didn't help at all, but it doesn't seem like the actual song made the difference (unlike Can't Speak French, which pushed a 4 months old album back almost to the top 10). Whole Lotta History It was quite a band favourite, it completed the "science-trilogy" with the dictionary definition on the promo sleeve after Biology and Chemisrty, and probably the least debated single of the era bar Biology, so it's OK. In fantasy world, skipping Long Hot Summer makes perfect sense, but releasing nothing between February (when Wake Me Up came out) and the very end of October seems a bit too long. Releasing the album a bit earlier seems like a good idea, though I don't really mind that their chart record is not perfect, it shows that their releases didn't automatically ended up in the top 10, they worked really hard to achieve that. Also I find it somewhat funny, that the only 2 proper releases (I don't count Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me as such) to miss the top 10 are Chemistry and Untouchable, both much more memorable than some that did better on the charts, and both peaked at #11, just 1 tiny step away from the goal. A single release in February is yet another thing that looks good on paper, but they were actually launching the album in Australia at the time, so it had to be March to support it properly. If we move on to May, releasing a single right before the tour is something that they've never done, and that's not accidental: they are too busy in rehearsals and putting together the production for the tour around that time, and on top of that in that particular year, Cheryl was also about to get married, so it doesn't seem possible to add anything more to the schedule. I like the idea of "Chemistry: The Platinum Edition", but only if we lose the Christmas Edition (which wouldn't be such a tragic loss), releasing 3 versions of the same album within 6 months seems a bit overkill. Single #5 depends very much on how well the previous singles did, and also, as mentioned earlier, Cheryl had a wedding (plus a World Cup) to attend during the summer, and they had a few festival dates (and probably some recording sessions for the upcoming compilation album) in August already, so there wasn't much space to change things. I thoroughly agree with Wild Horses, Models, Waiting and Watch Me Go being all single-worthy material (and better choices than Long Hot Summer or See The Day), though for some reason I think Wild Horses would have been too good for the general public (but then I remember, so was Biology, and they got that, so what the hell do I know?), and lyrically, Watch Me Go doesn't seem like a good fit for morning programmes and kids TV (which they relied on quite heavily at the time). To sum up, I think it's great fun to dive into their history, looking at these little details or even coming up with "what would have been" scenarios, just as much as I like being reminded that bands don't exist in a vacuum, things don't always go according to plan (however great the plan might be), and these imperfections give us even more to talk about :)
  15. The single choices from Chemistry were a bit odd (Jay wrote an excellent post on a "fantasy Chemistry-era" here: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=4947658 ), but we can't ignore the circumstances. Long Hot Summer wasn't really chosen as a single, they had an opportunity to do a song for a movie and took it. Funnily enough, it didn't end up in the movie or on its soundtrack album. See The Day kept a "tradition" going of finishing 4 years in a row with releasing a cover single (Jump - I'll Stand By You - See The Day - I Think We're Alone Now). They didn't get too much support from radio - if I'm not mistaken, none of their singles between Sound Of The Underground and Something Kinda Ooooh were A-listed by Radio 1 -, and radio programmers are more likely to put a song on their playlist that might already be familiar to the audience. As for Watch Me Go, I'm not entirely sure if it would have been appropriate for programmes like GMTV, CD:UK or Ministry Of Mayhem.
  16. That's not their official YouTube channel, and the song sounds like a fan-made mixture of the album version and the demo (which is not very well known, but that's where the alternate intro and the extra verse come from).
  17. If it's going to be anywhere near as good as what Mr Tikovoi did with another Girl Aloud, we're in for a treat.
  18. Congratuwelldone to Untouchable + Beat Of My Drum! Kinda funny to see them winning by 41 and its exact double, 82 points. It was geat fun, thanks a lot to Joseph for hosting!
  19. Great top 4! There was a hint at an unexpected winner, and out of the remaining 4, only Untouchable's triumph would surprise me.
  20. That's the beauty of music, we hear the same thing, but our responses are so different :) I'm fully aware that it's largely considered "typical Girls Aloud" (even the girls themselves said so when it was released), and I could give you reasons why I don't see it that way (if there's any interest), but it's just an opinion, and I don't want to convince anyone that I'm "right". On the other hand, I still can't really comprehend when I hear a song I like, how come there's anyone in the world that doesn't realise just how fantastic it is :)
  21. A slight disappointment that we have an all-singles top 10, but it seems like those are the tracks most of us agree on (I never expected my own non-single top 10 choices to chart too high, especially after the boot & immune series), and each of the remaining 10 made my list (of 40), so it's partly my fault as well.
  22. Hell yeah! - No Good Advice - Biology - The Show - Untouchable - Can't Speak French - Sound Of The Underground Yeah - Sexy! No No No... - The Promise - Call The Shots - Wake Me Up - Something Kinda Ooooh - The Loving Kind - Love Machine OK - Life Got Cold - Long Hot Summer - Whole Lotta History Let's give them all back to the original artists, they're not needed here - Jump - I Think We're Alone Now - Walk This Way - I'll Stand By You - See The Day No... - Something New Personal (not particularly positive) opinion aside, no artwork, no additional tracks, not even one tiny remix or anything, no promotion whatsoever = NOT a single - Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me
  23. http://www.discogs.com/Various-Radio-1-Est...release/1108836 They also contributed backing vocals to the Franz Ferdinand track.
  24. I like the 2 songs mentioned, but that was me. I can give you a longer list of other fan favourites and well known songs that didn't make my top 40, in case you want to be shocked :D I'm also responsible for most of the new entries (so far) as well, and I'm fully aware that my taste in music is not the usual here, but it wouldn't be such fun if we all voted for the same stuff. On the other hand, I'm very happy that Beat Of My Drum topped the solo chart (although it wasn't my top choice, but I never expected the majority to agree with me, as noted above). It's not a big surprise after last year's result, but the difference of 82 points is quite remarkable.
