  1. I like the new version very much.... although I'm a little worried that the only good tracks on Red Shoes - Top of the City, Moments of Pleasure, Lily and Song of Solomon are the ones she's re-recorded - I just hope they're not as much of a disaster as her re-recording of Wuthering Heights for the Whole Story... and isn't This Woman's Work perfect anyway? There's nothing needs changing with it whatsoever, so I'm a little worried she's done this one. Just finished reading Under The Ivy, a new biography on Kate by Graeme Thomson - a damn good read, very insightful, not schmoozy at all - honest, well-written and incredibly well researched.
  2. Black Eyed Peas - just COMPLETELY vile.
  3. A death week? The world's most influential and revered female singer releasing her first in 5 years...a DEATH week?!?!? Whaaaat? Welcome back the Goddess that is Kate Bush..... crikey.....

Horrible woman..... she was recording in Monmouth many years ago, after T'Pau and she used to go into my friend's pub... always rude and 'starry'....and she used to, no word of a lie, put her OWN RECORDS on the jukebox...?!?!?!? Can you imagine?

I can't stand Dancing Queen..... but I do like Winner Takes It All - beautiful song. The albums are packed with hidden gems, too - Lovers Live a Little Longer on Voulez Vous, Soldiers, When all is said and done and the title track from The Visitors, Hole In Your Soul from The Album, My Love My Life and Tiger from Arrival, Happy New Year and On and On and On from Super Trouper, 'So Long' from 'ABBA', 'My Mama Said' from, I think, Waterloo. I agree that my favourite ABBA moments are the more off-the-wall ones, and Day Before You Came is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Hard to date them... but here, in order(ish) are mty favourite bands, excluding solo artists.... ABBA - started off with an obsession with Agnetha... then I realised how fantastic their music was.... forget 90% of the singles and ther Mamma Mia debacle.... and listen to The Visitors...incredible Blondie - the best band frontwoman of all-time.... beauty, brains and and incredible voice. Hard to pick a fave - but Eat To The Beat, Parallel Lines, Autoamerican - all superb pieces of work. Soft Cell - criminally only remembered by the masses for their worst single, Soft Cell were a band who got more dark, twisted and fabulous as they went on - The Art of Falling Apart and This Last Night In Sodom are works of genius - and their comeback a few years ago spawned Cruelty Without Beauty - a stellar comeback album. Yazoo - who could fail to be entranced by the groundbreaking pairing of the bluesy, earthy voice, with the metallic electro backing? 'Winter Kills' remains one of my all-time favourite records... a masterpiece. Depeche Mode - liked them from Speak and Spell but really loved them from A Broken Frame onwards - too many classics to mention, really, but they're strill Britain's most interesting longterm band - curiously ignored by the Brits...year after year. Disgraceful. Cocteau Twins - 'Heaven or Las Vegas' is astonishing..... as is Treasure. Elizabeth Fraser has the voice of an angel.... just... beautiful music. I wish they'd do just ONE more album.... Siouxsie and the Banshees - a living icon. 'Peek-a-boo' is my fave of theirs but there's oodles of others I'd take a bullet for. And their version of The Passenger pisses all over Iggy's.... Pet Shop Boys - I think I may be the only fan who thinks Nightlife is their best album..... they've released their fair share of stinkers, but they're still capable of genius...... as proved by 'Numb' and some of the Yes album. Roxy Music - a latecomer to these, but as soon as I heard the debut album I was hooked. Even the later albums have their moments. And obviously, the best artwork - ever. The Smiths - a fan from This Charming Man...... the band that revolutionised British music for me. Forget The Beatles and The Stones..... I think The Smiths were a far more influential and important band than either. The Queen is Dead - all-time favourite album, Bigmouth Strikes Again in my top 5 all-time singles. Massive Attack - coolest band in the universe.... to come back with a career-best like Heligoland last year was great. Again, far too many classics to mention - and they're possibly the most influential band of the past 20 years, I think. They were doing avant garde ambient when Radiohead were making US-rawk albums. Underworld - again another band remember by most for their most annoying hit single.... I urge anyone who hasn't to buy Dubnobasswithmyheadman, their debut - it's incredible.... Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain remains one of my favoutrite albums of all time, they've never ever matched its brilliance, and the last album was horrific, but they're still a hugely influential and innovative band who I'll follow on til they pack it in. Another marvellous frontwoman, too. Other bands I've loved through the years.... New Order (up to Revenge), Sisters of Mercy, Flying Lizards, Human League, The Cure (up to and including Disintegration), Pink Floyd, Portishead, Mercury Rev, Duran Duran, Visage, The Specials, Squeeze, Eurythmics (early - up til 'Savage'), Japan, The Beatles, Suede, The Doors, Mamas and The Papas, Midlake, This Mortal Coil, Can....... and thousands more :D
  7. Great singles, great artwork - but GOD, the album stinks...... awful.
  8. Daniel Powter - just beyond dreadful - and, of course, Black Eyed Peas - just vomit.

I reckon it's better dusting off Upstairs at Erics, You and Me Both, and definitely investing in the Yazoo Reconnected Live album....which is absolutely brilliant - and testament that Mr Clarke and Ms Moyet still have the magic touch - in fact, listening to the live album, moreso now than back then I'd say.

I'd say the opposite - apart from anything else - only about 25 people buy the awful rag nowadays anyway. And with the internet, we don't need journos receiving backhanders recommending absolute $h!te for us to waste money on - we can see for ourselves whether it's worth our hard-earned. There's oodles of bands the NME have lauded that have sold absolutely nothing regardless - something that would never ever have happened in the 80s and 90s.
  11. My favourite covers are always the ones that don't look anything like conventional covers - the covers I think work best are the really avant-garde ones... which is why I think the best album covers of all time are by bands like Cocteau Twins, The Pixies, Roxy Music, New Order, Joy Division, The Smiths and Depeche Mode... none of tem look like everyday single or album covers
  12. But she's NOT playing a 'British' character - that's the whole point - the whole kaboodle's being relocated to America... Miss Marple will now be an American.... in America?! This is wrong wrong wrong on EVERY level.

I have a druken confession :P .... just after the first Erasure album, I was in London in a bar and I saw Andy Bell.... he was being the big "I am" with a group of fawning fans, despite not really having a hit to their name at that point. He pushed past me and made some comment when I refused to move unless he said "excuse me"..... to which I aswered "Christ, if Alison Moyet were dead, she'd be turning in her grave listening to you doing your karaoke impressions of her"..... he looked mortified, bless him. I saw him at the Brighton Yazoo gig a few years back, too.... he was probably gutted watching how truly spectacular they were. Whenever I listen to Erasure, I always wonder hw brilliant Yazoo would have been had they liked each other and stayed together.... :(

I just found The Strokes a bit contrived and too derivative to be of much interest - yes, they looked great, they definitely had that skinny-jeans-moppy-hair look down to a T.... but their music was just pretty average garage alt-rock..... a bit of a pastiche, a band for kids too lazy or non-clued up to look for the originals. And thankfully long-gone are the days when we get 20 year old spotty graduate NME 'journos' breathlessly dictating to us who are "REALLY GREAT AND WHO WILL BE, LIKE, REALLY MASSIVE THIS YEAR - THEY'RE SOOOO COOL - ADD THEM TO YOUR COLLECTION, KIDS. NOW! How boring. The Vaccines are what they are, I think - they'll never change the world, but they have a crafty knack of producing some excellent bursts of great pop/punk.

Resurrecting an old thread...but... after being extremely dismissive and sniffy about yet another pointles American remake.... especially of a film so absolutely faultless as Let the Right One In, I finally got to see this last weekend...and.... it's terrific. Easily as good as the original. The lad who plays the main lead, also in The Road (most depressing film ever made? Yes... but he's brilliant in it).... he's even more brilliant in Let Me In...a future star is born, I think - he underplays the role with the panache of an actor 3 times his age - spellbinding. America hasn't done horror at all well in decades..... they've rectified it with this, though. A masterpiece.

I like the album and the band far far more than The Strokes... a band whose hype was always more interesting than the product. And I love Post Break-up Sex...and the album's a pretty decent debut. I see someone mentions The Drums here - possibly the least interesting album I bought last year - bloody awful.
  17. It's a long way from their greatest work..... and it seems a pity that after such INCREDIBLE solo albums by Phil Selway and Thom Yorke, Radiohead seem to be trudging along a bit...... also, this is surely the UGLIEST artwork the band have ever used? It's a shockingly terrible sleeve design.... 5/10
  18. It's a toss-up between the ghastly Westlife and the even more gut-wrenching Kelly Clarkson... but Westlife got my vote this time.
  19. I love this photo - she looks very much like Lene Lovich in it.....

I always found Erasure like a pale imitation, a karaoke version of, Yazoo - who released 2 albums Erasure couldn't possibly better. It's obvious that the material Vince Clarke gave Andy Bell to sing for the first few albums was actually written for Alison Moyet..... who'd have sung them a whole lot better.

She's had some ok songs - but her 'Madonna-by-numbers' routine, and the 'look at me' costumes, the ridiculous entrances with her knocking on the side of an egg for someone to PLEASE NOTICE ME... ah.... it's all a bit embarrassing, don't you think? Plus..... Born This Way is a truly, truly awful song.

Ithink you're underestimating how truly great the album is and how jaw-droppingly excellent the 2 singles have been - it's music with no frills.... people are tiring of the 'all image - no songs' style of GaGa, are tired of lip syncing Britney clones..... and of the perfect body brigade who look great but sound pants. Adele is pure, honest to goodness talent. A stellar voice with no fancy gimmicks - it's long overdue that talent actually took back the airwaves. The first Adele album was incredibly patchy and all over the place..... '21' is phenomenal, a full, rounded album, destined to be remembered like Back To Black, Hounds of Love, Diamond Life, Alf, Little Earthquakes, Debut - everlasting albums by iconic female artists. As for saying her success is down to the usage of one of her songs in XFactor...err... absolutely not. The majority of Adele's audience wouldn't lower themselves to watch something tainted by Cowell - it's the absolute opposite end of what much of her audience appreciates. Me included.

I liked Faye, too - I was hoping they'd pay her off with enough dosh to buy the Woolpack - it'd be fun seeing Faye trying to make the place a bit 'classier'.... maybe a gastro pub? Plus, any excuse for more Ryan is fine by me... although I've read he's quitting. Damn shame. The whole Jackson storyline's dragging now, too - he's not a terribly good actor, anyway, and the part's getting a bit demanding for him (ok, he only needs to talk and move his head and sup orange juice, but still). And Pauline Quirk - she should come with a translator - I can barely understand a word she says.
  24. I'd say ANYTHING by Mariah Carey is borderline bull$h!t if I'm honest :)
  25. Arctic Monkeys and Mylo have one vote each - is someone here HONESTLY saying they think either of these is a worse single than Westlife or Black Eyed Peas? I mean... really?
