R.I.P. MCA
Paul's Boutique remains one of the best and most groundbreaking albums of all time. Sad news, way too young.

I've done two but can't decide - whichever gets most votes, I'll go with.... http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm76/blissfulignorance_2008/variouscruelties2.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm76/blissfulignorance_2008/variouscruelties.jpg

Simian Mobile Disco 'Unpatterns' ıı May 14 2012
Worth checking out is this month's Mixmag.... the covermount CD is a mix by SMD and it's totally unlike what I was expecting - deep, dark twisted house. Absolutely superb.

Record Store Day 2012
stunning! A variation on the album cover, with spikey edges. The Kate Bush 'Lake Tahoe' picture disc 10" is gorgeous, too..... the ABBA vinyl is turquoise with glitter inlaid.... very nice. I've not even opened the Beatles box set yet..... I'm in two minds about opening it, daft I know, but.....

Record Store Day 2012
The guy in Spillers told me people had queued since 2am?! Good to see RSD really take off this year. Just bad that lots of the buyers seemed to be eBay hounds judging by a quick check of the site for the things I wanted....

Record Store Day 2012
... well, did anyone venture to their local independent store last Saturday for Record Store Day? I went to Cardiff Spillers (the world's oldest record shop, no less) and managed to get the Beatles box set, Janis Joplin's 'Pearl', The Cure 'Seventeen Seconds', Kate Bush's 'Lake Tahoe' and ABBA 'Voulez Vous'...... I missed out on the Gorillaz 12" and the Wicker Man 7" :( Have you seen how much the above are going for on eBay right now? Scandalous.... I aint selling mine, that's for sure :D

Top 200 Best Selling Boy Band/ Girl Group Singles 88-04
one of Comic Relief's best charity songs, but one of Bananarama's least interesting chart singles..... worth checking out is the actual Comic Relief appearance of this, where the whole thing descends into a flan-flinging mess.

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
I can't wait to see her on before Grace Jones at Lovebox this year - what a line-up for the Sunday... incredible.

Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" played 200,000 times on radio
And if this isn't a good enough reason to never ever listen to atrocious radio stations (ALL of them especially Radio 1,.... ugh), then I don't know what is....

Top 200 Best Selling Boy Band/ Girl Group Singles 88-04
I worked in HMV when Bros released their first single... they came in with the record company rep to do a PR signing session. As the single hadn't sold a jot, they ended up stood behind the counter JUST chatting to the staff....... nice guys, fair play. However, when they were stood there, customers just thought they were HMV staff, and they fended off no end of people asking the duo to help them find a certain item. How odd that just months later, they were Britain's biggest band (albeit for 2 minutes).

Big New (Global) ABBA Compilation In May
...well it's hardly 'essential'...... ABBA really are guilty of milking their catalogue more than any other band I know of..... there really are only so many 'best of's you can get away with before you cheapen your brand... this one offers very little of any interest for fans. And even the casual observer would almost surely already have every single track on this album? It smacks of shameless cash-in. The strange addition to the tracklisting has to be That's Me... never a favourite of anyone, I'm a little baffled by this. I'm quite glad there's no non-single tracks from the abysmal Mamma Mia on here..... the less said about it the better as far as I'm concerned. The cover is.... ok...... I actually had an old Scandecor poster of this image that I bought in Woolworths in the late 70s.,.. I 'd kept it rolled perfectly up in my Mum's attic for decades. I put it on eBay for a very small starting price recently. It sold for almost £100?! There really are still some dedicated/lunatic fans out there (Germany and Australia seem to house the majority of the full-on fans). Another gripe with this unnecessary release is... DVD? No Blu-Ray? I haven't bought a DVD in over 3 years..... I read about this month's re-release of The Visitors... and the 'lost' track... a YouTube search and all I could find was a decidedly dodgy version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star morphed with Like An Angel Passing Through My Room... is this really the 'lost track'? If so, I'm deafened by that awful sound of the barrel being scraped. Shame on you, ABBA. :(

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
You're right on the first score, love her or loathe her, GaGa cuts the mustard live.... but Katy Perry? Na.... she's atrocious live..... utterly tune-free and incapable of holding a note.... as she proved with (surely the worst ever) recent Live Lounge... and that 'Fireworks' abomination on XFactor. Lana del Rey definitely had an off-day at SNL... but check through her other live performances... she's mainly pretty great. And she oozes more style, class and talent in a fart than Katy Perry's attempted in her whole sorry 'career'.

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
I think the whole idea is that 'LDR' DOES actually live an empty shell of a life, like a cross between a JT Leroy book character and a David Lynch big screen tragi-starlet. At times lollipop-sucking shallow, vapid and stoopid, at others, lyrically quite profound and gorgeous. I really, really love this album, but I agree, if you're looking to find the 'person', the 'artist', then we're onto a loser because she's not there - this is a girl in character. And I like that - it's like artists have done for years, creating a whole persona, a mask...... probably most successfully achieved by Bowie as Ziggy Stardust 126 years ago. And let's not forget, Bowie killed Ziggy off onstage... so... hmm.. perhaps that live performance was Lizzie slaughtering 'Lana' for the world to see? ;)

I'm still awaiting arrival of mine... but as album artists, they're normally a bit patchy - not so with this one, then?

Orbital - Wonky - new album - April 2012
I'm still waiting delivery of 'Wonky'... but, like I've mentioned on another thread - surely one of THE most beautiful album covers I've ever seen..... stunning.

The Wilson Phillips video makes me laugh... there's the two skinny ones flaunting about in skimpy clothes... whilst the dumpy one's in a big smock stranded on the beach, bless her....

Top 200 Best Selling Boy Band/ Girl Group Singles 88-04
When you consider the absolute career-highlight classics the Nanas released in this eligible period (for classic pop, does it ever get any better than Preacher Man, Only Your Love, Long Train Running? Definitely not), it's quite shameful that their weakest ever single is here, britain's best ever girlband are sorely misrepresented here.... And 'Help', the other song to feature later on, really isn't much better. What a shame.

A best-ever, I reckon. Stunning.
