WizKid & Kyla - One Dance -5: Fifth Harmony feat. Ty Dolla Sign - Work From Home It's a shame we have that unspeakable Work From Home horror clogging up the top 10. Apart from that, it's a good top 10. EDIT: Work From Home on minus points! (and about time too) What to do to celebrate?
  2. Hoping Galantis's No Money might overtake Cake By The Ocean in the next update!
  3. Saw this with friends this afternoon, very very good. 10/10. Spider-Man's costume was kinda cheap though.

Sir John Major has weighted in on the issue, telling Brexiters that if they want undiluted sovereignty in the modern world, they can go to North Korea because that's where they'll get it. :D Maybe if the referendum turns out to be "Remain" Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage will do just that (in my wildest dreams).

  9. Prince occupies the top two (with a little help from The Revolution) this week! Following his shock passing last Thursday, Prince rules the top 2 (along with the Revolution) and earns his first number one. His most iconic song, Purple Rain, entered at #6 last week. Now having a full week compared to 24 hours, it climbs 5 places to reach the top spot. Similarly, after entering at #9 last week, When Doves Cry climbs 7 places to occupy the runner-up spot. There are five other songs by Prince in this week's chart, all on the rise: 1999 climbs 4 places to #11, Kiss climbs 8 places to #13, Little Red Corvette climbs 15 places to #18, I Wanna Be Your Lover climbs 12 places to #37 and Cream climbs 8 places to #52. The Pop Kids falls one place to #3, after two weeks at #2. History repeats itself for Sigala, as yet again, one of his songs is knocked down to #4 after a second week at #1. Give Me Your Love falls three places to #4. Hymn For The Weekend spends a 13th week in the top 5, falling two places to #5. I Took A Pill In Ibiza falls two places to #6 and Lush Life falls two places to #7. Say It To Me climbs three places to #8, Ashes To Ashes falls one place to #9 and No falls three places to #10. Other notable songs No Money jumps 16 places to #12. Can it become Galantis's third top 10 hit? Magnetised also sees a nice jump, climbing 31 places to #28. 17. #1: Ashes To Ashes (from Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) CMThz7eQ6K0 Year of release: 1980 UK Peak: #1 Chart Run: {4-1-1-2-3-7-15-36-57-71} {62} (16/08/1980 - 18/10/1980) (21/01/2016) Scores: 11 (Severin, SamJudd, dandy*, Taylor Jago, AH Gold, Colm), 10 (popchartfreak, Joe., Fgiboy2511), 8 (richie) Average: 10.4 Final score: 104 Ashes To Ashes was Bowie’s first new material of the decade, but it also harked back to ‘a guy that’s been, in such an early song’ – Major Tom of Space Oddity fame. Essentially Bowie was giving us part 2 of the Major Tom character’s story, and the public responded by taking the character to the #1 spot again. The songs lyrics were created through Bowie’s now famous ‘cut up’ technique, in which he would write down a number of phrases, lines or just words and then take a pair of scissors to them and re-arrange them until he finalised the lyrics. Because of this the song has a large number of lines that exist as a standalone or as part of a 2 line couplet. And despite this technique the songs lyrics remain a remarkably coherent tale of how astronaut Major Tom found himself marooned alone in space, addicted tosome unspecified drug and reflecting on his life. All of which can be taken as a metaphor for Bowie’s own experiences during the 70’s. The song ends with an ominous nursery rhyme warning about the dangers of drug abuse. Musically the song is a hybrid of Funk, New Wave and Art Rock, which gives it its distinctive otherworldly feel. At the time there was nothing else quite like it in the charts. It helped pave the way for the New Romantic scene that Bowie had both inspired with the Low album and been inspired by himself. For the video (which at £250,000 was the most expensive video ever made at the time) Bowie recruited a number of regulars from London’s new Romantic hotspot The Blitz club, including Visage frontman Steve Strange. The video became one of the most memorable of the ‘80s. It cemented Bowie’s status as a pioneer of the video format and became a staple of the nascent MTV channel for years. With 6 11s, 3 10s and a 8, it isn't even really close as Ashes To Ashes wins by 7.5 points. Featuring a line which was our reaction at the news of January 11, 2016 ("oh no, don't say it's true"), and a glorious synthesizer outro, Ashes To Ashes is probably my favourite song of all-time, and I'm glad it's won the competition. Thank you all for voting and following the results, it's been great fun!

Originally appearing on Hunky Dory in 1971 it wasn’t released until mid 1973. Lyrically the song is full of surrealist imagery but is essentially the story of a young girl who is bored by the world around her and dreams of something greater. It is also famous for Rick Wakeman’s distinctive piano work. The songs origin’s date back to 1968 when Bowie attempted to write an English lyric for the French song CommeD’habitude. Bowie’s song remained unreleased until Paul Anka reworked the original French song into My Way (made famous by Frank Sinatra) after Bowie returned to his song and reworked it once again into Life On Mars? Fans of the song should check out Bowie’s stripped down live version he performed in the 90s/00s. A live performance with Arcade Fire was released in 2005 on iTunes. Our runner-up is the second and final single from Hunky Dory. Considering by some to be his very best song, it re-entered the UK top 20 following his death and was the most streamed Bowie song in the four days following his death. Which means our winner is...
  19. #3: Space Oddity (from Space Oddity) iYYRH4apXDo Year of release: 1969 UK Peak: #1 Chart Run: {48-x-39-25-20-13-8-6-5-7-16-18-34-36-49} {23-11-4-2-1-1-2-10-20-38} {24-51} (06/09/1969 - 13/12/1969) (11/10/1975 - 13/12/1969) (21/01/2016 - 28/01/2016) Scores: 11 (popchartfreak, richie, Joe.), 10 (Severin, SamJudd, Taylor Jago), 9 (Fgiboy2511), 8.5 (dandy*), 8 (AH Gold), 7 (Colm) Average: 9.55 Final score: 95.5 Following several frustrating failures at launching his music career and having been dropped by label Dream, David Bowie created a 30 minute film called Love You Till Tuesday, designed to act as a showcase for his talents. Much of it relied on his earlier work but there was one late addition to the film, a track called Space Oddity. The story of astronaut Major Tom and his conversation with ground control, the track was inspired by the impending Apollo 11 mission. The song impressed him but Bowie’s eventual long term producer Tony Visconti considered it gimmicky and passed on production duties. The single however, captured public imagination when radio began playing the song after the Apollo 11 crew returned home. Bowie had finally had a hit and he now realised the importance a strong image could have on his success. The single was re-issued in 1975 where it peaked at UK #1. In 2013, real-life astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield recorded a cover version of the song, Performed on the International Space Station, he became the first person to record an album in space. In third place we have David Bowie's first hit, Space Oddity. As Bowie never had that hit everyone could agree was his best (like Purple Rain was for Prince), one of the most frequent answers to the question "What is David Bowie's most iconic song?" will be Space Oddity. Be prepared to restrain yourself from hitting somebody who calls it "Major Tom", however. So it's a TV series showdown in the top 2. Life On Mars? vs Ashes To Ashes: who will win?
  20. #4: Under Pressure (with Queen) (from Hot Space) YoDh_gHDvkk Year of release: 1981 UK Peak: #1 Chart Run: {8-1-1-2-8-16-35-35-38-41-48} {43-81} (14/11/1981 - 23/01/1982) (21/01/2016 - 28/01/2016) Scores: 11 (SamJudd, Taylor Jago, AH Gold, Fgiboy2511), 10 (Joe.), 9 (popchartfreak), 8 (Severin, richie, Colm), 6.5 (dandy*) Average: 9.35 Final score: 93.5 In July 1981 Queen were recording in Switzerland with Bowie also recording his Cat People single in another room, when after a few drinks they began a jam session from which Under Pressure would evolve. Queen had a vague outline for a song called Feel Like that would serve as a starting point for Under Pressure. According to Queen’s John Deacon, Bowie came up with the famous bassline but according to Brian May, Roger Taylor and Bowie himself, Deacon had already been working on something approaching the final version when Bowie latched onto it, effectively suggesting the song be built around it. Brian May, in the days after Bowie’s death, stated that Bowie was the driving force behind the song’s completion due to his enthusiasm for the project when others were beginning to lose interest. Most of the vocals were improvised, particularly by Freddie and Bowie apparently wrote the majority of the lyrics in short bursts, inspired by some vague concept of the harshness of modern times. The song was written and recorded in one day, with minimal overdubs from Brian May later. Neither act at the time was particularly keen on the result, considering it little more than a piece of fun, but once Queen’s label EMI realised that they had the two acts on one song they pushed for its release as a single. It would go on to become a mainstay of Queen’s live shows, but Bowie never performed it live until a memorable version with Annie Lennox at Freddie Mercury’s tribute concert in 1992. It has been noted many times that when viewed objectively, Under Pressure is something of a mess of ideas but that at its heart is a great bass riff and a powerhouse performance from two of Rocks then biggest superstars. Each gives a vocal performance so stirring that it simply lifts the track beyond its parts. There’s a video on youtube that has the singers parts isolated to produce an acapella version of the song that demonstrates just how accomplished their vocals are. My second favourite Bowie song and favourite Queen songs finishes in fourth place here. Born from a jamming session in a Switzerland chalet, almost 35 years later it remains one of the best songs ever made.
  21. #5: Starman (from The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars) yMAj9BLofFg Year of release: 1972 UK Peak: #10 Chart Run: {49-41-29-20-18-10-12-18-35-43} {18-36-98} (24/06/1972 - 02/09/1972) (21/01/2016 - 04/02/2016) Scores: 11 (popchartfreak, richie), 10 (Severin, SamJudd, dandy*, Taylor Jago, Colm), 8.5 (Joe.), 7 (AH Gold), 6 (Fgiboy2511) Average: 9.35 Final score: 93.5 Starman is the song that truly launched Bowie’s career from what was fast becoming a catalogue of failed singles. A late addition to the album it sold reasonably well. Well enough to secure an appearance on Top Of The Pops. It would be this performance which would truly launch the career of David Bowie and the character with which he would be most associated – Ziggy Stardust. The performance was controversial at the time for Bowie’s draping of his arm around guitarist Mick Ronson – not something men in 1970s Britain were supposed to do. It opened the doors to all kinds of questions about Bowie’s sexuality and ‘gender-bending’. From that moment he made a connection with a part of British culture that felt like outsiders. Although Ziggy is often wrongly taken to be the titular Starman, the intention was that he was merely the human tasked with spreading the Starman’s message. Starman was the first single from The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, and a performance on Top Of The Pops made it his second top 10 hit. 44 years later, it's still fantastic.
  22. #6: Let's Dance (from Let's Dance) N4d7Wp9kKjA Year of release: 1983 UK Peak: #1 Chart Run: {5-2-1-1-1-6-9-13-24-37-44-54-61-74-79-82} {23-47} (26/03/1983 - 09/07/1983) (21/01/2016 - 28/01/2016) Scores: 11 (Joe.), 10 (popchartfreak, SamJudd, richie, Taylor Jago), 9 (dandy*, Fgiboy2511), 8 (Severin), 7 (Colm), 6 (AH Gold) Average: 9 Final score: 90 According to Nile Rodgers, in 1982, in a New York club, a drunken Billy Idol inadvertently helped shape the future of David Bowie’s career when he almost threw up over him. Idol and he had been sharing a table when the vomiting occurred and Rodger’s took the opportunity to escape. Spying Bowie at another table, he introduced himself and the two began chatting. By the end of the evening Bowie had invited Rodgers to produce his next record, effectively dumping long time friend and producer Tony Visconti on the spot. Visconti would not work with Bowie again for 20 years. Bowie had gone for a clean break elsewhere too. All the musicians that made Scary Monsters had departed, even Carlos Alomar (for now at least). When Rodgers learnt that Bowie had enlisted him because he wanted hits, he was initially disappointed, as he’d been hoping to work on an artier project. When Bowie first played Rodgers Let’s Dance, it was a stripped back acoustic number that has been compared to The Byrds’ Folk Rock era, albeit one that Bowie felt was a single. Rodgers insisted a song with ‘dance’ in the title needed to be something you could dance to. He took the song away and bagan to play around with it. He and Bowie would discuss their shared love of Little Richard, The Isley Brothers and other 50’s and 60’s Soul and Blues artists. Eventually they would fashion Let’s Dance into a modern take on the styles. Guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan was brought in, despite Rodgers’ initial objections, to perform the solo at the end. Let’s Dance was the first track recorded for the album and was confidently pitched as the first single. Bowie has rarely been this expectant of a single’s success, but he was unprepared for how huge it would become. Coupled with a memorable video, shot in Sydney, it reached the UK and US #1, became a huge hit all over the world and paved the way for Bowie becoming a global megastar. In sixth place we have Bowie's most commercially successful hit, Let's Dance. Released in March 1983, it topped charts in numerous countries. I played this at a party in June of last year, and everyone was on the dancefloor.
  23. #7: Lazarus (from Blackstar) y-JqH1M4Ya8 Year of release: 2016 UK Peak: #45 Chart Run: {45-90} (21/01/2016 - 28/01/2016) Scores: 10 (Severin, Taylor Jago, AH Gold), 9 (popchartfreak, richie, Joe., dandy*), 8 (SamJudd, Fgiboy2511, Colm) Average: 9 Final score: 90 Lazarus would be David Bowie’s final single release. It came out as a digital single in December with the video released less than a week before his death. He had been fighting cancer for 18 months He was diagnosed with liver cancer around July 2014, meaning that by the time of the single releases of Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) and ‘Tis A Pity She Was A Whore, Bowie was already battling the condition. At some stage Bowie became aware it was terminal and it seems to be around this time that he resolved to complete the Blackstar album - his ‘parting gift to fans.’ Bowie has begun working on ideas for the follow up to The Next Day almost immediately after the former’s release. Song demos had been ongoing and the album was recorded in early 2015, with the musicians unaware of Bowie’s declining health. The album was released on the 8th of January 2016, Bowie’s 69th birthday, to critical acclaim. Many hailed it as his best work since the 70’s. Some noted the album’s thematic similarities to Low. Both albums have a pain and bleakness that runs throughout the songs but Blackstar has a central theme of death, mortality and resurrection. Despite the clues, the world woke on the 11th of January to the shock news that David Bowie was dead. He had managed to keep his illness secret until the end effectively written his own obituary with the album. Lazarus is named after the biblical character that Jesus raised from the dead. The lyrics feature many references to his illness and his personal life, including his time in New York. The video also features a number of references. He wears the same outfit he wore on the Station To Station album artwork, the dancers mimic the moves from the Fashion video. Meanwhile Bowie spends much of the video as a character that has become known as ‘Button Eyes’ lying on a hospital bed. The last image we ever get of Bowie is him shuffling backwards into a wardrobe like some metaphorical coffin. Lazarus reached the UK #45 following his death. Bowie's final top 50 single, and his final single to be released while he was alive, finishes in seventh place. I'd expect a future countdown later in time may not place it as high, but it definitely is one of his most beautiful songs.
  24. #8: Heroes (from "Heroes") Tgcc5V9Hu3g Year of release: 1977 UK Peak: #12 Chart Run: {27-26-25-24-25-25-34-39} {12-30-97} (15/10/1977 - 03/12/1977) (21/01/2016 - 04/02/2016) Scores: 11 (Severin, dandy*, AH Gold), 10 (popchartfreak, SamJudd, richie, Taylor Jago), 7 (Joe.), 5 (Colm), 4 (Fgiboy2511) Average: 8.9 Final score: 89 ‘Heroes’ is often cited by many as Bowie’s greatest song. However, it wasn’t until 1985 when its performance was among the highlights of Live Aid that the public at large came to realise what Bowie’s fans had known since 1977. It was once memorable again in 1992 at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, and since then the song has grown in the public’s conscience to become arguably the song with which he is most associated. The 1987 Reichstag performance of the song in Berlin was even cited by the German Foreign Office as a catalyst in the fall of the Berlin wall. But in 1977 Bowie’s career was approaching a crossroads. Not only had his last single, Be My Wife – a thinly veiled plea to his then wife Angie not to leave him –become his first not to chart since Changes but Angie had refused to join him in his move to Berlin and the marriage would end in divorce in 1980. Working with Brian Eno had inspired Bowie to try new sounds ad ideas but his commercial appeal was waning both in the UK and the US. The ‘Heroes’ single did little to change that. The single version cut the song in half, robbing the song of much of its grandeur, and limped to a mid 20s chart placing. Reviews at the time were not very positive. The lyrics to ‘Heroes’ were allegedly written in just over 5 minutes in a toilet at the studio the same day it was recorded. The doomed lovers referenced in the song were inspired by producer Tony Visconti and backing vocalist Antonia Maass, when Bowie saw them through a window at the studio. Visconti was married to Mary Hopkin (who appeared on Sound And Vision) at the time and so the couple for years remained anonymous. The quotation marks for the title were added to emphasise the song’s ironic lyrics. The distinctive guitar work was supplied by King Crimson’s Robert Fripp. Bowie’s vocals were recorded on 3 separate microphones each at different distances to the singer, with only the nearest mic used for the quieter vocals. As Bowie’s vocals become more impassioned the mic in use moves further away from him, leading to the feeling that the singer is lost in a wall of noise and ambience and highlighting the tragic nature of the couple’s romance. The song would finally reach UK#12 following Bowie’s death in 2016. If this was entirely down to me, this would be fourth. Unfortunately, I don't control the results, and so Heroes finishes in eighth place. Although it peaked at #24 on original release, and failed to chart in the US, it has become Bowie's signature song, and was the highest Bowie song on the week he died. It also closed Now That's What I Call Music! 93.
  25. #9: Fashion (from Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) GA27aQZCQMk Year of release: 1980 UK Peak: #5 Chart Run: {20-8-6-5-5-12-24-42-56-56-56-75} (01/11/1980 - 15/01/1981) Scores: 11 (Joe.), 10 (Taylor Jago, AH Gold), 9 (Severin, SamJudd, richie), 8 (popchartfreak, Fgiboy2511), 7 (dandy*, Colm) Average: 8.8 Final score: 88 The 2nd single from the Scary Monsters album saw Bowie once again hit the higher reaches of the UK singles chart. Fashion, like most of the album was a mixture of Art Rock, Funk, New Wave and Post Punk influences. The song’s meaning has been much debated with theories ranging from it gently poking fun at the New Romantic scene to being a comment on the National Front. Bowie himself has commented that it was his take on the idea of the banality of trying to keep up with fashion trends and of how tiresome that could be. The song was among the last to be completed for the album. The album itself has come to be regarded as Bowie’s best of the 80’s and its influence can be felt on genres as diverse as New Romantic, Brit Pop, Post Punk and Goth. The single came with another video that was highly regarded as among the best of the era. One of the most underrated Bowie songs, Fashion didn't even make the iTunes top 100 in the four days following Bowie's death. Despite this, Bowie fans know that it is one of his very best.
