  3. #46: Underground CwVqOs3Aess Year of release: 1986 UK Peak: #21 Chart Run: {26-21-25-31-45-61-x-86} (21/06/1986 - 09/08/1986) Scores: 10 (Acidburn, Taylor Jago), 9 (richie), 7 (popchartfreak), 5 (Joe., Colm), 4 (Severin), 3 (Dandy) Average: 6.625 Final score: 66.25 The mid 80’s are sometimes referred to as Bowie ‘soundtrack years’ as a he seemed more interested in building on his film career than he did his musical one. Underground was the only UK single from the Labyrinth soundtrack, as following its commercial failure, the planned follow up; As The World falls down was cancelled. Bowie himself wasn’t interested in promoting the single and had no input into the video. It has often been noted that he wasn’t particularly interested in the music he was producing at the time either as Underground has not been kindly reflected on by Bowie. The songs lyrics were rushed and despite having Albert King on guitar, Chaka Khan, Cissy Houston and Luther Vandross in the gospel choir, all of them are underused and too low in the final mixing. Bowie has never performed any version of Underground live which is rare for any of his solo work prior to 2003. This definitely finishes way too low here. I wasn't expecting it to do that well but I was hoping for it to make the top 40 at the very least. Anyway, it's my personal favourite from the Labyrinth soundtrack, and there are quite a few worse songs which are higher (such as Never Let Me Down).
  4. #47: Fame '90 lp-qDhR2shQ Year of release: 1990 UK Peak: #28 Chart Run: {34-28-34-63} (07/04/1990 - 28/04/1990) Scores: 8 (Acidburn, Dandy, Colm), 7 (popchartfreak, Joe., Fgiboy2511), 6 (AH Gold), 4 (Severin, Taylor Jago) Average: 6.55 Final score: 65.55 In 1990 Bowie was still a full time member of Tin Machine, a group formed to help him rediscover his passion for music. At the same time he felt that to keep himself interested in solo work he needed to break from his past. Thus he conceived the Sound + Vision tour; he would play all his hits, as chosen by his fans, and then he would retire them permanently from his live shows. This would be the last time any would be played live. As it turned out he would bring the occasional one back from time to time as it suited him but often in a re-worked form. To promote the tour, his forthcoming compilation Changesbowie and the reissue of all his RCA albums in expanded format on CD, Bowie needed a single. He wanted to remix a big US hit and the obvious choices were Let’s Dance (‘too recent’), and Fame. ‘It covers a lot of ground, Fame; it stands up really well in time. It still sounds potent. It's quite a nasty, angry little song. I quite like that.’ The remixed version also appeared in the film Pretty Woman. Is there actually any difference between tghis and the original? I'd definitely call it more of a remaster than a remix.
  5. #48: When The Wind Blows dD-2I9QOXAo Year of release: 1986 UK Peak: #44 Chart Run: {46-44-54-65} (08/11/1986 - 29/11/1986) Scores: 9 (Taylor Jago), 8 (Acidburn, richie), 7 (popchartfreak, Joe.), 5 (Dandy, Colm), 3 (Severin) Average: 6.5 Final score: 65 The theme song to the movie of the same name, it was the last movie song of Bowie’s ‘soundtrack period’ (unless you include Fame ’90 showing up in Pretty Woman) and another example of his struggle for consistency in the 80’s. The film and song detail the effect of a nuclear war and its fall out in 80’s Britain, but unlike Threads or The Day After the film is animated and based on a Raymond Briggs novel. In what may be a somewhat embellished legend the story has it that Bowie was recording in Switzerland when news of the Chernobyl disaster broke - prompting him to write Time Will Crawl. It is unconfirmed what he was recording but it was either the demos for Never Let Me Down or this single. The song was written with Erdal Kizilcay who would collaborate with him on the Buddha Of Suburbia album 7 years later. Like most people in the 80’s Bowie was concerned about the threat of nuclear conflict and how dangerous the Cold War had become, particularly the policy of mutually assured destruction. The song’s lyrics reflect this by taking usually comforting phrases and images (lullabies, nature) and giving them an ominous overtone. The single didn’t capture the public imagination in the same way the film did and it stalled outside the UK Top 40. In the film in question, a elderly couple prepare for a nuclear bombing by the URSS. When the bomb does drop, they go into their shelter and stay for a couple of days, then come out and get sick of radiation poisoning, and die. Sounds cheerful.
  6. #49: Day-In Day-Out (from Never Let Me Down) zl9BLmwFi0U Year of release: 1987 UK Peak: #17 Chart Run: {30-19-17-28-42-63} (04/04/1987 - 09/05/1987) Scores: 8.5 (Taylor Jago) 8 (Acidburn), 7 (popchartfreak), 6 (Joe.), 5 (Severin, Dandy, Colm) Average: 6.35 Final score: 63.57 In 1987 Bowie’s new album was promoted as a return to his Rock roots, it was supposed to be what his audience had been waiting for as the true follow up to Let’s Dance. A return to the creative mastery of his 70’s output. Bowie had been writing prolifically, for the first time since 1980 and anticipation was high. Bowie himself began the era talking positively about what he’d made. Less than two years later he would all but disown the album. Initial reviews were decent if not glowing but things quickly soured as the bulk of them came in. Never Let Me Down was a bona fide stinker. For all of EMI’s bluster, Bowie had written a few decent songs but spent so much time half-heartedly trying to make them sound fresh and vital that he effectively smothered them to death. Bands that would matter over the next 10 years: Pixies, Nirvana, Public Enemy, N.W.A. Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, The KLF, Primal Scream; all of them were beginning to make waves on the scene. Bowie seemed completely out of touch. Day-In, Day-Out was the opening single and it quickly became clear the UK public didn’t care much for it. The video was pushed heavily (despite some stations banning it) and received a prime spot on Top Of The Pops as well as a video single release. It limped to #17 in the UK. Day-In, Day-Out is notable however, for highlighting Bowie’s increasingly socio-political lyrics, dealing as it does with homelessness and poverty. Tin Machine would increasingly develop this side of Bowie’s writing. In retrospect, this isn't actually a bad song, but it's definitely more memorable for its video than the song itself. Perhaps surprisingly, this is the first song from Never Let Me Down to be eliminated, meaning all three of its singles escape the bottom 20.

  13. David Bowie replaces himself at number one! David Bowie is still at number one, but this time it's with Life On Mars? After Lorde's stunning performance of the 1971 masterpiece, it shoots up 15 places to become David Bowie's third number one. Although his current domination will likely not provide him with any more, Under Pressure will likely earn him a fourth chart-topper when Brian May or Roger Taylor die. Ashes To Ashes falls a place to #2, after spending five non-consecutive weeks at number one. However, it returning to the highest placing one more time in the following weeks isn't out of the question. Hymn For The Weekend falls a place to #3, and it looks as if Bowie's death could have caused a potential three week number one to miss out on the top spot altogether. But let's not jump to any conclusions just yet. Zara Larsson's Lush Life falls a place to #4. A new remix featuring Tinie Tempah premiered today, so could that push it back to number one perhaps? Meanwhile, Absolute Beginners climbs back a place to return to the top 5. In a few days, it will celebrate its 30th anniversary, as it was released on March 2nd, 1986. Lazarus and Blackstar both climb two places to #6 and #7 respectively, while Secret Love Song falls 4 places to #8. Heroes climbs back one place to #9, and Under Pressure climbs back two places to #10. Other notable tracks Just outside the top 10 we have When We Were Young at #11, climbing 36 places. After their show-stopping performance at Wednesday's BRIT Awards, Black Magic climbs 25 places to return the top 40 at #28. Meanwhile, Alan Walker is just outside the top 40, with Faded climbing 16 places to #41. Jess Glynne performed three songs at the BRIT Awards, and all three are in this week's top 100. Don't Be So Hard On Yourself climbs 5 places to #26, Ain't Got Far To Go enters at #56 and Hold My Hand re-enters at #73. As well as helping many Bowie songs climb this week, Lorde's performance of Life On Mars? helps her song Team enter at #59. Mike Posner's I Took A Pill In Ibiza enters at #84. After he performed it at the BRIT Awards, The Hills jumps 30 places to #66. Half of Suede's Night Thoughts appears in this week's chart: Tightrope is the highest at #42, followed by I Can't Give Her What She Wants at #49, When You Are Young at #49, The Fur & The Feathers at #60, I Don't Know How To Reack You at #89 and When You Were Young at #90. Four Bowie tracks enter or re-enter the top 100 this week, meaning he has 26 songs in the top 100 this week. Ziggy Stardust becomes his 19th top 40 song at #35, while Rebel Rebel is at #62 and The Next Day enters at #87. After a two week absence, Loving The Alien re-enters at #95.

  15. Where Are U Now and Hotline Bling are utterly awful. Never Forget You, Eyes Shut, Body Talk, Elastic Heart, Peanut Butter Jelly, Love Me Like You and Fight Song are all great though!
  16. #50: TVC 15 (from Station To Station) OqW5gP0g_Go Year of release: 1976 UK Peak: #33 Chart Run: {44-37-33-35} (22/05/1976 - 12/06/1976) Scores: 8 (Severin, richie), 7.5 (Joe., Taylor Jago), 7 (Dandy), 5 (popchartfreak, Acidburn, Colm), 4 (AH Gold) Average: 6.33 Final score: 63.33 The 2nd single from Station To Station, like most of the album, was recorded in L.A. where Bowie was now living following his relocation from New York. The song was inspired by a drug fuelled hallucination of Iggy Pop’s in which the television swallowed his girlfriend. Bowie took this inspiration and wrote the song around the idea of a holographic television into which the singer climbs to recover his girlfriend. The Station to Station album marks a major turning point in Bowie’s career, much more so than is often given credit for, and for several reasons. Most obviously it acts as the natural bridge between the ‘plastic soul’ of Young Americans and the ‘Berlin trilogy’ of albums that would follow. Bowie was now inspired by Krautrock bands like Neu! and Can. Perhaps, more significantly, Bowie has also claimed that his cocaine habit was now so large that he cannot remember recording the album. He had overdosed more than once during 1975/6 and was looking pale and emaciated. Bowie later stated that he was ‘out of his mind’ and deranged. It was because of this that he would move to Switzerland in 1976 to ‘clean up’ And that's two out of three gone for Station To Station. Anyway, TVC 15 is quite good, but it's not overly impressive and Station To Station should have been released instead (that song was issued as a single in France with a shorter version lasting a mere 3 minutes 40 seconds).
  17. #51: White Light/White Heat C-gWW0xfYc8 Year of release: 1983 UK Peak: #46 Chart Run: {65-46-56} (05/11/1983 - 19/11/1983) Scores: 9 (Severin), 7.5 (Taylor Jago), 7 (Acidburn, richie), 5 (Colm), 4 (Joe., dandy) Average: 6.21 Final score: 62.14 In 1983 Bowie’s former label RCA took one more shot at cashing in on his back catalogue by releasing the album of the Ziggy Stardust film. Recorded on the last night of the tour in 1973, it was the show were ‘Ziggy’ famously declared they would never play again. The song itself was originally written and recorded by The Velvet Underground and Bowie had been a long time fan. He’d been performing the song live since 1971, had recorded it twice for BBC Radio sessions and it almost made it onto the Pin Ups album. The song would continue to remain a fixture of his live sets right up until his retirement for touring. With the song being noticeably different in style to his recent works, the public shied away from buying it. Most of his older fans would have come across the recording on the widely available bootleg: His Master’s Voice – Bowie and The Spiders From Mars’ Last Stand. And just missing the top 50 is Bowie's cover of The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat, which stalled outside the top 40.

And obviously Drag Me Down was going to win despite the video being terrible.

That was a great tribute from both Annie and Gary, and Lorde absolutely did Life On Mars? justice.
