US Hot 100 – 08/17/2019
Fun Fact: The shortest track to enter the UK Singles Chart was The Ladies' Bras by Jonny Trunk & Wisby (0:27) If only You Suffer by Napalm Death managed to chart in the Top 100, then it would be unbeatable.

I too am impressed by Boyfriend, and I can also say that The Git Up is corny, but fun and enjoyable at the same time.

15/08/2019 NEW ENTRIES: #98. Sarah Jeffery - Queen Of Mean (from The Descendents 3) #96. Blanco Brown - The Git Up #92. Gerry Cinnamon - Belter #82. Tones & I - Dance Monkey #81. Solardo & Eli Brown - XTC #72. Drake - 4PM In Calabasas #50. Drake - How Bout Now #43. LAUV & Anne-Marie - f*** I'm Lonely #8. Aitch - Taste (Make It Shake) #4. Ariana Grande & Social House - Boyfriend Kicking us off this week is a song from the forthcoming third installment of Disney Channel’s The Descendants franchise (May you rest in peace, Cameron Boyce) called Queen Of Mean. The song doesn’t feature Boyce but it does feature the vocals of Sarah Jeffery (who plays the character Princess Audrey). I like some of the orchestral arrangements in the track, as well as the way the pitch shifting parts in the background are layered in a similar fashion to Justin Bieber’s 2015 smash hit Sorry (one of my faves from him). However, the lyrics come across as a tad overdramatic and I’m not a huge fan of the 1st and 2nd verses where Jeffery sounds like she’s rapping. I have seen this sticking around in the Top 20 of the Billboard charts, but it has now entered the UK charts. The Git Up is a country and trap fusion in a similar vein to Old Town Road. It does a great job at capturing the atmosphere of a country-western dance with Brown pointing out the dance moves through the lyrics with his charismatic Western accent and the country guitar twangs blend well with the beatboxing and trap percussion. It doesn’t get too repetitive, in which it doesn’t repeat the song title over and over, which is a good thing. In a time where most of what you expect in the charts is pop, hip hop and occasionally EDM, Indie folk artist Gerry Cinnamon has been lucky enough to nab a 2nd charting hit in the form of Belter, which came out in 2017 (Boy, do I find it interesting when I get to look at songs that came out a few years ago in this thread!). The song starts off with a thin voice and acoustic guitar texture before adding in some percussive sounds on the guitar near the end. It's a really good acoustic tune, and Gerry puts on an enjoyable vocal performance. Dance Monkey stops off with some nice keyboard chords that remind me of English Riviera-era Metronomy. The song has a bouncy quirky sound to it thanks to the colourful production and what really makes it shine brighter is near the end where the textures expand with the addition of sustained piano chords. It did take a while for me to get used to Tones’ voice, but she sings good in this. XTC has a catchy tech house sound to it that reminds me of Oliver Heldens, and it’s great to see that kind of sound come back into the charts. The soulful vocal style really enhances the song by blending well with the house style production. This week, we’ve got two tracks from Drake’s latest compilation album Care Package, which consists of pieces of Drake’s old material that haven’t been available on streaming services until now. 4PM IN Calabasas serves as another installment to Drake’s time and location tracks (e.g. 9AM In Dallas from Thank Me Later). The track sees Drake refer to his beefs and some events of his past life, along with an interpolation of Grandmaster Flash’s 1983 hip hop classic The Message and a chill sounding beat. I was going to give this a gold rating, but I feel like Drake switches topics too quickly in the lyrics to the point where I don't get what the connecting themes of the song are. How Bout Now was previously available as a bonus track in the physical edition of 2015 mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Despite a few ridiculous lines including one in which he deletes all his other girls’ phone numbers for his girl (I do give credit for showing a sense of appreciation towards this girl though), Drake blends melodic and non-melodic styles of rapping together solidly over some pleasant sounding reverse synth lines and he rides the chorus really well. The pitch-shifted Jodeci sample fits nicely into the mix too. Taken from the forthcoming third season of 13 Reasons Why is LAUV & Anne-Marie’s new single F**k I’m Lonely. The song has a nice chiming sound to it to convey a sense of loneliness (which LAUV is also great at doing in his music). I like how both artists paint out their perspectives of a post break-up situation, despite a line in the latter’s verse in which her friends are too drunk to stop her from going on her phone. Overall, it's a perfectly decent song. Taste (Make It Shake) has a low pitched vocal line in the mix throughout that reminds me of the goat sounding sample in J Balvin and Willy William’s Mi Gente from back in 2017. This could sound like mindless fun judging from the hedonistic Tyga-esque lyrics, but I’m not fond of Aitch’s vocal delivery. The chorus, since it pops up occasionally, ends up weighing down the song thanks to the sound of the vocals not backing up the lyrical content very well for me. Boyfriend bears some colourful sounding production (the intro sounds like something out of a Madeon song). The song does a good job at looking into a couple that miss the fun times of a relationship, with both Ariana and the Social House showing some fun vocal chemistry between each other. Fave Of The Week goes to XTC by Solardo & Eli Brown. It reminds me of the great club jams that came from Spinnin' Records in the mid-2010's. The honorable mention goes to Drake with 4PM In Calabasas. Least Fave Of The Week goes to Taste (Make It Shake) by Aitch. #98. Sarah Jeffery - Queen Of Mean (from The Descendents 3) [6/10] #96. Blanco Brown - The Git Up [9/10] #92. Gerry Cinnamon - Belter [8/10] #82. Tones & I - Dance Monkey [9/10] #81. Solardo & Eli Brown - XTC [GOLD] (Fave Of The Week) #72. Drake - 4PM In Calabasas [9/10] (FOTW HM) #50. Drake - How Bout Now [8/10] #43. LAUV & Anne-Marie - f*** I'm Lonely [7/10] #8. Aitch - Taste (Make It Shake) [5/10] (Least Fave Of The Week) #4. Ariana Grande & Social House - Boyfriend [9/10]

08/08/2019 NEW ENTRIES: #94. Mabel - Bad Behaviour #93. Mahalia feat. Burna Boy - Simmer #90. Headie One - Rubbery Bandz #87. Lizzo - Good As Hell #80. The Chainsmokers and ILLENIUM feat. Lennon Stella - Takeaway #76. NF - Time #71. AJ feat. Geko, Ard Ardz and Koomz - Bad & Boujie #49. Liam Gallagher - Once #42. Rick Ross feat. Drake - Gold Roses Mabel's pop charisma shines through in Bad Behaviour along with some glossy synths to back it up. Simmer makes a clever use of mixing ‘simmer’ and ‘sinner’ together in the chorus with a swell vocal performance from Mahalia. Despite some autotune on Burna Boy's voice. It doesn't overshadow his parts and he shows some good reggae elements in his lines while playing the role of the 'sinner' Mahalia refers to in the chorus. Rubbery Bandz contains some minimal tropical production which sounds different from the other tracks I heard from Headie which had dark, syncopated trap beats. I like it! I notice some offbeat flows at some points on the 2nd verse though, and they’re a few ridiculous lines, such as one involving pouring champagne on a girl's ass, but other than that, a pretty decent track. Potential sleeper hit like with Truth Hurts? 2016 cut Good As Hell sees Lizzo put on a passionate, empowering performance over soulful piano R&B chords while presenting a great message telling us that we’re beautiful in our own way. There's also some elements of feminism in the pre-chorus ("If he don't love you anymore, just walk your fine ass out the door"). I think that is a really good line (don’t know if it’s as iconic as the DNA test line in Truth Hurts though), because it could possibly tell us that you don't need to waste your energy throwing bad things at your ex and that you should spend it doing the things you love. Takeaway deals with themes of heartbreak (a common theme in most of The Chainsmokers’ material). The lyrics aren’t that brilliant, but the drop is absolutely fantastic. In my opinion, it is one of the most colourful drops I’ve heard in a Chainsmokers song since Roses. Time starts off with some beautiful violin sounds, before switching to piano chords. NF does a good job in exploring a crumbling relationship through the song’s lyrics. The post-chorus further emphasises the melancholy tone of the song with a vulnerable use of vocal chopping. Bad & Boujie bears a nice tropical sound and AJ gives off a decent, fun verse to go with it. I'm not a fan of the other performers' verses though and in the end, it's an overall okay track. Once is a heartfelt song dealing with the situations Noel and Liam are dealing in the present with following Oasis' breakup in 2009. Liam looks back on the good old morning glory days fantasticaly with his well-written lyrics dealing with these issues. The final line in the chorus ("You only get to do it once") is a great way of showing that once we get famous, we enjoy the taste of it for a limited amount of time before growing to despise it and wish for our lives to return to normal. Rick Ross has been having his music pop in the Billboard Hot 100 for years, with some of my faves from him being Hustlin’ and BMF (Blowin’ Money Fast). He also has had his controversial musical moments, like that infamous line in Rocko’s UOENO that music reviewers have been mad about and the Trayvon Martin line in BLK & WHT (the former of which cost him his Reebok sponsorship). After featuring in UK charting hits by the likes of Chris Brown and Drake, he has finally done it in this country as a lead artist with the new single Gold Roses. This song has the insightful lyrical content of Omerta mixed with the artist features and sense of assertiveness in Money In The Grave. Like with the former, the beat sounds slightly similar, and like with the latter, both Rick and Drake give off solid verses. I like the production consisting of a 20th century piano sample and the pitch shifting in the mix, and the instrumentation switchup in the chorus with those lower range synths sounds really good. No Top 40 entries? That's weird! Anyway, Fave Of The Week goes to Once by Liam Gallagher, for showing a great sense of emotion with the perfect kind of instrument arrangements to back it up. With the honorable mention going to Gold Roses by Rick Ross and Drake Least Fave Of The Week goes to Bad And Boujie by AJ, Geko, Ard Ardz and Koomz. I like the summery vibe of it, but the verses aren't very good (with that of the lead artist being decent at best in my eyes) #94. Mabel - Bad Behaviour [8/10] #93. Mahalia feat. Burna Boy - Simmer [8/10] #90. Headie One - Rubbery Bandz [7/10] #87. Lizzo - Good As Hell [9/10] #80. The Chainsmokers and ILLENIUM feat. Lennon Stella - Takeaway [7/10] #76. NF - Time [8/10] #71. AJ feat. Geko, Ard Ardz and Koomz - Bad & Boujie [6/10] (Least Fave Of The Week) #49. Liam Gallagher - Once [9/10] (Fave Of The Week) #42. Rick Ross feat. Drake - Gold Roses [9/10] (FOTW HM)

Global hits that charted low/flopped/weren't released here
Some Billboard number ones I can think of that didn't make it big in the UK: Ready For The World - Oh Sheila The Black Eyed Peas - Imma Be Monica - Angel Of Mine (iirc) Divine - Lately Enrique Iglesias - Be With You Carrie Underwood - Inside Your Heaven T-Pain feat. Yung Joc - Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin') The last three didn't chart in the UK at all (with the T-Pain one bubbling under the Top 100 according to zobbel.de) Other US Top 10 hits I can think of that didn't make it big in the UK include DaBaby's Suge (that might happen later this year), Shop Boyz' Party Like A Rockstar, Lady Antebellum's Just A Kiss, Drake's Best I Ever Had and Maxwell's Fortunate.
