I don't think it was the absolute best episode of the Whittaker / Chibnall era but it was really solid and a big step up from much of the last series and in particular from the poor 'Resolution' special two years ago. Given Chibnall seems to have an aversion to festive specials, I thought it was pretty good and the best we can probably hope for during his era. Seeing the throwback monsters in jail was quite a hoot and having Captain Jack back really elevated the episode. It was nice to have a more character driven episode but it did feel like the Daleks played second fiddle to the character arcs at some points. They could have quite easily got a lengthy 90 minute special out of it and made more of the Dalek invasion. Like Chez says, I also think they could have made more of the Doctor in prison, which again felt rushed. Yaz is starting to come into her own now so I'm glad she's staying on - she's always felt under-utilised compared to Ryan and Graham. I'm not sure how I feel about John Bishop. A very left-field choice but then a lot of people said Bradley Walsh wouldn't work and he did!

I think that's quite good for Doctor Who - I expected around 4m based on its recent downward trend and the fact everything seems to be rating on the low side this festive period. It's a bit worrying that The Serpent couldn't beat Doctor Who despite the lack of competition in the 9pm slot, whilst Doctor Who faced a similar rating Emmerdale in its slot.

Graham Norton did very well - around 1m higher than normal I think? I can't recall his NYE show going higher than around 4.3m in recent years. Given the overnights have been fairly low all round despite more people being at home, I wonder if catch up will be better? Or if linear TV has just lost viewers for good.

It will be interesting to see how well the NYE fireworks replacement does this evening with everyone staying at home this year!

That wasn't a particularly surprising twist - why else would they have randomly lumped Shirley & Tina in at Gray's house? Also it was teased a while ago that there would be a serial killer storyline that begins to play out over Christmas that wasn't obvious at that stage. I think I agree with T Boy that they've probably got the choice of death 'right' for once. Tina's not a legacy character or leading character but still a big enough presence to have an impact on the show and other characters.

Apparently the 16-34 demo did better than the s1 launch (which had a total of 5.5m viewers). It seems the older audience must have collapsed in favour of The Repair Shop.

Poor Sophie - her performance was weak so I'm not surprised. The effort to conceal her voice just made the whole thing sound quite bad. When she sang properly unmasked at the end, she sounded miles better. Robin has to be Aston? It sounds just like him! The clue package was so obviously pointing to Billie Piper for Sausage that it feels like it now can't be her. I kept hearing Ne-Yo during Badger's performance and with Cee Lo & Kelis doing series 1, maybe he's actually within the realms of possibility. But I'm not sure how it fits with the clues at all.

Shocking for the post 9pm schedule on both BBC and ITV - EE at an all-time Christmas Day low by far, BGT not even above 3m and MBB not even managing 4m. The biggest surprise there is Blankety Blank which I was sure would perform badly or certainly not within 0.2m of the highest rated programme.

A number of journalists saying their 'sources' are telling them that a deal is pretty much done and will be announced this evening or tomorrow.
