Utada Hikaru has the Best Selling Digital Download Ever.
Flavor' single claims digital crown Utada Hikaru tune sells 7 mil units By GORDON MASSON LONDON — EMI is celebrating a highly successful campaign for the release of "Flavor of Life" by Japanese superstar Utada Hikaru, which is laying claim to being the world's biggest selling digital single with sales of seven million units across all formats. Two different mixes of the song have been snapped up in their millions through a variety of digital products, including mobile phone ringtunes, full-track mobile downloads, fixed line downloads, ring videos and ringback tones. Although EMI admits there is currently no official industry system for tracking the sales of singles across all digital and physical formats and products, either globally or in Japan, the Recording Industry Association of Japan claims the previous best selling digital single "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-zone, sold four million units, mainly ringtunes. Meanwhile, the top selling digital song in the U.S. to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan, was "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter, which sold just over two million units in 2006, excluding ringtunes. Nielsen RingScan states that the best selling ringtune in the U.S. to date is the 2.1 million-selling "Smack That" by Akon. Hikaru's "Flavor of Life" also holds the record for the most successful single of all time in Japan in terms of units sold across all formats with total sales now in excess of 7.7 million. The previous biggest selling single in Japan was the 1975 release "Oyoge, Taiyaki-Kun" by Masato Shimon, which sold 4.5 million units, according to Oricon, which compiles the Japanese charts. Hikaru additionally holds the record for the best selling album of all time in Japan with her debut, "First Love," which has sold nearly eight million copies, according to Oricon. Jean Francois Cecillon, chairman and CEO of EMI Music Intl., said: "Utada Hikaru has once again led the Japanese music market into new areas of growth and success. 'Flavor of Life' has firmly established a new form of hit single —one where consumers can purchase music in whatever ways they choose. In the new music environment we must deliver multiple products for multiple consumers." EMI's campaign for the single began when the ballad version was released as a ringtune in January to coincide with the launch of popular TV drama series "Hana yori Dango 2": the show aired "Flavor of Life" in its entirety at the end of almost every episode. Additional digital product types, such as ringvideos, ringback tones and ringtunes of the original version of the song were released in subsequent weeks, helping the single to sell over two million digital units in total by the time the physical single was released on Feb. 28. EMI then further enhanced the growing success of Hikaru's song with viral promotions, such as the creation of a "blog tag," which enabled consumers to paste the single's video into their personal blogs. In just one month the video was played more than 600,000 times. Shoji Doyama, president and CEO, EMI Music Japan said: "We will continue to deliver our artists' music in a variety of product types that is as diverse as consumers' needs. There will be more and more cases like Utada Hikaru where hits come from a coordinated approach to physical and digital releases." http://www.variety.com/article/VR111796876...d=1009&cs=1 go Hikki! :cheer:

BILLBOARD ALBUM CHART
but that album had 4-5 huge singles to keep it near the top of the charts for almost 2 years.. this one has an underwhelming 1st single that's already dropping down the chart & a 2nd single that radio's not even going to touch. this next week the drop may not be as bad because of the Live Earth promo, but really after that it'll just sink down the chart. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't even hit 1 mil. in the US. Kelly is the Janft of '07.

Smashing Pumpkins to debut at #1?
according to hdd. The Zeitgeist has arrived. No, not that one, but the new album from Billy Corgan’s Smashing Pumpkins, their first since 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God and debut for Reprise Records. Based on reports from retailers around this still-open-for-business country of ours, Zeitgeist will sell between 140-150k in its first week. That would put it in a race for #1 with this week’s chart-topper, Grand Hustle/Atlantic rapper T.I., who still looks like he should be able to hang on to enough of his 466k total to hold off the bald guy’s challenge. Aside from Corgan, the only other original member of the group is drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, with guitarist/vocalist Jeff Schroeder and bassist/vocalist Ginger Reyes replacing James Iha and D’arcy Wretzky. Interpol makes their major label debut on Capitol Records with Our Love to Admire, the New York indie-rockers’ follow-up to 2004’s Antics on Matador, which looks headed toward a first-week total of 80-90k. That won’t be enough for it to overtake Disney’s Hannah Montana 2, with a figure that should go over 100k and a probable #3 finish, but appears a lock for Top 5, on the strength of its #3 ranking at iTunes. Thanks to being #2 in sales at iTunes, Merge’s Spoon, with their stunningly titled Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, the follow-up to 1985’s critically acclaimed Gimme Fiction, is looking at 40-50k and an outside shot at the Top 10. Hollywood Records’ sister act Aly and AJ have grown up on Insomniac, their new album which spotlights their rock pedigree, with songs featured in Super Sweet 16: The Movie, currently airing on MTV. That album is on target to sell between 40-45k. Overall, the market was down 1% vs. last week, down 3% vs. same week last year and now down slightly under 14.7% to date.

If it's Hannah, then it's a song from the 1st album or the 1st disc of this 2nd album that's the sdtk to the 2nd season of the show. if it's credited to Miley, then it's from the 2nd disc of the new album which is non-show affiliated songs. simple enough?

according to official Billboard numbers Kelly actually sold 291k, 10k below estimates. Hitsdaily had her at between 350-400k based on 1st days sales, so me thinks there was a lot of upfront demand but it died off as the week went on. :arrr:

because she's gotten terrible press for months, has no hit single, no radio play, and an album that doesn't appeal to her teeny fanbase. she'll probably pull a Janet - 20YO, sell 300k opening week but barely scrap 650k total. :cheer:

go Namie  PLAY is awesome. It's gonna be her biggest album since GENIUS 2000 :cheer: Hide & Seek should get a real single release, not just a PV though :( and I'm sick of nasty trashy Koda, and Freaky sucks. -_-

Carrie Underwood Album Sales Question.
yeah US sales. country wouldn't sell WW so I don't think it was even released anywhere else... if she's less than 130k away, anyone know what her & Breakaway's soundscan sales are?
-
Carrie Underwood Album Sales Question.
Has she surpassed Breakaway's US album sales to have the highest selling AI album yet? She's at like 5.7million now and Breakaway sold about that... is she past it, or how soon 'til she passes it?
