  1. I'm 25 and I use all 3, but I voted for downloads as my favourite.

I use streaming almost every day but I use the free version as I prefer to download things (legally!) so I can have a permanent copy of them on my laptop and iPod. If I particularly like an artist I'll happily spend £10 on a CD album, but for artists I'm not as big a fan of I might download their albums when the price comes down to £4.99 or whatever.

  2. 300-350k

I think this is a cautious estimate in comparison to some of the other predictions, but I do think that people are overestimating. He will have huge first week sales, great longevity and a hefty total in the long haul either way, though. I'm happy to be proven wrong.

His streaming will be huge right out of the gate. It's the driving force in the current performances of x and +. It would be extremely foolish of his label to not put it on Spotify on the day of its release, nor will they wait.

    I also voted 300-350k. If it was Q4 I would've voted 400k+ though!

We've had a couple of threads in recent months about what makes a 'hit single', and I was wondering what things make people consider an album to be a 'hit'.

Is 'silver' (60k) seen as a flop for albums that have been out for a while? I know album sales are low these days, but it does seem quite a low number to be considered worthy of a certification! 'Gold' (100k) doesn't seem like much of a 'hit' to me either.

I think peak chart position has more meaning for albums than for singles, but longevity like that of Adele and Ed Sheeran's albums is more important than peak position.

  6. Had my CD delivered by Amazon this morning and I've listened to the full album once. I think it's better than Get Weird (especially in terms of the production) and possibly DNA too. I found the second half of the album more enjoyable than the first half.
  7. In order for the chart to be less stale, I think it would be a good idea to start with the 100:1 ratio when a song is first released, then reduce (or should that be increase?) the ratio after it's been in the top 40 for a certain number of weeks. At least we might get rid of the Justin Bieber-type songs faster then! :P

Over the last couple of years, I have bought several albums I probably wouldn't have bought if I hadn't been able to listen to them via streaming first. Streaming has also allowed me to rediscover songs I had forgotten about, and I often end up buying these songs. So I think I'm buying more music now than before I began using streaming. I would probably be buying less music if I had a paid streaming subscription, but I have stuck with Spotify Free as I don't spend £10 a month on music.
