Friday Chart Predictions
Shame Noah's label didn't decide to push it this week, with a remix and physicals he could've been in with a real shot. Just hoping he holds up well into January and can take it the week after next. Crazy to think in the past 20 years, the only Xmas #1s we've had which weren't either X Factor winners or (mostly terrible) charity campaigns are Killing in the Name, Rockabye and Perfect. Would be nice to see a genuinely popular current hit get it again.

Streaming Services Chart Discussion
Well, I meant in comparison to last week. Streams were significantly up year-on-year for the first week of December and now they've fallen back a little. Last week there was snow, this week torrential rain. Seems like a reasonable theory to me!

Wonder if this awful weather is what's dampening people's Christmas spirit? The rain has been nonstop here for the past week.

Friday Chart Predictions
Not saying you're wrong, but there are other factors too. I think until around 2018-19, the majority of people who streamed regularly were the younger generation, who were more likely to be interested in current chart music, and hence the Xmas songs were slightly less dominant. The older generation (my family included) would just put on an old Xmas compilation CD and listen to that, which obviously wasn't contributing to the chart. Since 2020 especially, other demographics have adopted streaming as their primary method of listening to music, and this is reflected in the relative decrease in streams of what's currently popular, and increase in the classics which have more widespread appeal. Hence why songs like Mr Brightside, Riptide, Iris end up consistently in the year-end chart. And hence why Xmas songs absolutely dominate the chart in December, even on ACR.

Also - it's "only 5 weeks" but that means every decade, a whole year's worth of charts are dominated by Xmas music in virtually the same order. To me that sounds like a lot.

Friday Chart Predictions
Surely if Wham get the Xmas #1 two years running the OCC will decide to do something about it. As someone mentioned, it's pretty much the only big story they have each year to bring attention to the charts, but if it started happening every year it would become a non-story. If it weren't for LadBaby we'd have had: 2020 Mariah 2021 Ed/Elton 2022 Wham 2023 (likely) Wham Honestly though, what can they really do? Give Jack Harlow the Xmas #1 this year when it'll likely be something like the 46th most popular song of the week? Seems a bit pointless.

Christmas #1 2023 odds & discussion
Last year in Xmas week FONY at #13 did 31,924 with Wham at #2 on 54k, I imagine it will get a fair amount of extra streams this year after the news regardless of a campaign, so may even need fewer than 20k downloads to take it? Would be great to see the song get #1 given the playlists are so US-centric, it's unlikely it will ever have another chance. (Also anything to stop Mariah or Wham getting it every year for the rest of time)

Northern Attitude is incredible, hope it can properly take off when Stick Season dies down (although most likely will be completely overshadowed)

I could see there being a lot of media coverage midweek if the Beatles are looking like getting #1 so that could help too! Really hope it doesn't miss out due to the Thursday release. Obviously might also drop off massively through the week and end up nowhere near but we'll see

Genuinely can't understand how people can listen to Xmas songs from 1st Nov and not be absolutely sick of them by Christmas Day. At the very least pick some different ones to listen to instead of Mariah and Wham every year :(

Did some calculations out of interest. Spotify totals after 3 days: 1. Is It Over Now (1,652,987) 2. Slut (1,441,744) 3. Now That We Don't Talk (1,403,962) 4. Style (1,381,772) 5. Say Don't Go (1,381,593) 6. Blank Space (1,184,945) 7. Out Of The Woods (1,161,200) 8. Welcome To New York (1,158,016) 9. Strangers (1,143,647) 10. Suburban Legends (1,123,528) So Kenya Grace still has a 260k deficit to make up in order to prevent an all-Taylor top 3 this week - that's 65k/day. Obviously can't know the totals from other platforms though. Shame to see Style dropping out, but hoping somehow Say Don't Go can get into the top 3

My thinking was $l*t may drop faster during the week as everyone checks it out on day 1, whereas Style is an established hit already (original was #14 on Spotify yesterday and already hanging around the top 100 long before the current hype boost, those residual streams will likely be going to Taylor's version from now on) so could hold up better. Could go either way I suppose!

Style getting to #1 officially is definitely not something I thought possible, but what a great choice over something like Shake It Off or Blank Space which were already huge first time around, even if neither made the top! I know she won't care, but seeing SIO especially fall down the all time singles rankings due to streams being split between two versions is going to be sad :(

Friday Chart Predictions
Interesting that every #1 this year has had either a single week or 8+ weeks at the top! Definitely enjoying the faster turnover now, rooting for Olivia and Doja to get a week.

Billie's cassettes must have been added, so Dua will almost certainly get #1 next week. Glad to see both songs make it

Friday Chart Predictions
Hopefully Billie can make it next week with the cassettes then. Guessing that's why they set the release date to Thursday, to see whether she has a chance at #1 this week and then delay if not! Both songs are great so it would be nice for both to get a week (and faster turnover at the top would be good too, this year has been as slow as 2016)

Friday Chart Predictions
Not wrong  Yeah, there are some anomalies, but at the very least you can make the argument that those two albums are pretty well known by the general public. Whereas for example, Maroon 5's greatest hits currently has 278 weeks on chart, and I'd imagine the majority of people aren't even aware it exists... Would be interesting to know how low its actual sales are.

Friday Chart Predictions
If there's no way of separating playlist streams from actual album streams then the current system is reasonably decent in principle, but streams absolutely shouldn't count towards greatest hits albums. Each track's streams should count for one album only. Either that or give greatest hits albums their own chart since it's just not a level playing field any more. If you look at the current album chart with GH removed I'd say it's fairly representative of the current most popular albums.

Estimated chart without ACR
Sorry to hear you're thinking of retiring this thread - understandable though as it must be a lot of work to put together! Can personally say I've enjoyed checking this out without fail every week, thanks for all the hard work and apologies for not interacting. More of a lurker on the forum these days!

CHART OF THE YEAR 2022
So none of the #1s from the first quarter of the year made the top 10 in the end, quite unusual in this day and age!

Top 100 Singles + Albums; W/E 10/11/22
Just noticed Billie Eilish has gone 77-77-77-77 in the past four weeks, how satisfying!

The Buzzjack Friday Chart Show Thread: 29th July 2022
17 consecutive weeks in the top 3 - that's the same as Shape Of You, Love Is All Around and Everything I Do. I think you'd have to go back to the 50s for a longer run? Correct me if I'm wrong. Would be incredible if he can somehow get an 18th next week! Edit - too slow
