UK music certification relaunched
By Jack White The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) have announced new changes to UK music certification. After 45 years in their former guise, The BRIT Certified Platinum, Gold & Silver Awards have been unveiled, a new identity in association with the BRIT Awards. Certified Awards are given out to popular singles and albums based on sales and streaming volumes tracked by the Official Charts Company. Still administered by the BPI – the UK record labels association which owns and organises The BRIT Awards – the certifications will now become part of The BRITs family. This will enable the awards to reach a larger audience while keeping the BRITs engaged with music fans all year round. Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI & BRIT Awards, said: "The BPI’s Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards are woven into the narrative of British music and are the official mark of a record’s popularity. On social media, fans love to celebrate their favourite artists reaching a big new milestone. "Given that The BRITs are the UK’s biggest platform for artistic achievement, with millions of fans at home and around the world, it makes sense for the BPI to bring the official sales awards under the BRITs banner." In addition to the Platinum, Gold and Silver certifications, a new BRIT Certified Breakthrough Award will also be introduced, given to acts whose debut album has passed combined sales of 30,000. The first new BRIT Certified Award recipients include Stormzy, MNEK, George Ezra, Camila Cabello and The Weeknd, with future announcements to be made over at the BRIT Awards Twitter account @BRITs. The Carpenters’ Yesterday Once More and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John were among the first singles and albums awarded when certification was devised in 1973, while recently, Amy Winehouse passed 3.9 million combined album sales to be named 13x Platinum.

OCC: Top 20 Best Selling Love Ballads of All Time
12 February 2018 The UK's Official Top 20 biggest selling love ballads of all time It's almost Valentine's Day! We reveal the best selling love ballads that get the UK feeling loved up. By Justin Myers Ah, Valentine's Day – bunches of flowers, boxes of chocolates, a glass of champagne and a romantic dinner, but let's not forget the music to set the mood! The Brits are a soppy lot, and many of our biggest selling singles of all time are love songs. To celebrate Valentine's Day we've put together a romantic playlist for you here, and we count down the UK's favourite love ballads – the Official Top 20 best sellers. ❤ 1: Love Is All Around – Wet Wet Wet Summer 1994 belonged to this song, by Scottish band Wet Wet Wet, which spent an astonishing 15 straight weeks at Number 1 – the second longest consecutive run at the top of all time, and equalled in 2016 by Drake's One Dance. Taken from the global movie phenomenon Four Weddings and a Funeral, starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell, Love Is All Around was the Wets' third Number 1. The track was a cover – it originally got to Number 5 in 1967 for the Troggs. The Wet Wet Wet version has sold 1.9 million copies! "Is it still raining? I hadn't noticed." Smooth, Andie. Smooth. 2: Unchained Melody – Robson and Jerome Unchained Melody hay be over five decades old, but it still has enduring appeal, and is much-covered, reaching Number 1 four times for different artists. Coming off the back of their starring roles in ITV's military drama Soldier Soldier, Robson & Jerome's version was a double-A side with a cover of Vera Lynn's White Cliffs of Dover and stayed at Number 1 for a whopping seven weeks. Sentimental sorts couldn't get enough of it – it's sold 1.87 million copies. MORE: See the chart runs of every version of Unchained Melody 3: (Everything I Do) I Do It For You – Bryan Adams Another movie soundtrack song, the theme from Kevin Costner fairy tale Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves holds the record for longest consecutive run at Number 1. Bryan's classic ballad kept hold of the top spot for an incredible 16 weeks. Sixteen. If you weren't a big fan of the song, let's just say summer 1991 was a particularly tough time to be a chart fan. 1.85 million of you own this one. 4: Anything Is Possible/Evergreen – Will Young Two for the price of one for Pop Idol winner Will Young's victory song from 2002. Evergreen was a cover of a Westlife album track, but Anything Is Possible was a new tune co-written by Cathy Dennis, who also penned Toxic for Britney and Can't Get You Out of my Head for Kylie. The single sold over 1.1 million copies in its first week on sale and is still the fastest-selling debut single ever. The single spent three weeks at the summit and now has over 1.81 million sales. See where all of Will Young's UK singles and albums have charted. 5: I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston The highest lady on our love ballad countdown is the late, great Whitney Houston. Taken from the hugely successful soundtrack of the hit movie The Bodyguard, in which Houston starred, I Will Always Love You spent 10 weeks at the top was 1992's Official Christmas Number 1. It's well known the song was a cover of a Dolly Parton track that never charted in the UK. Two further versions have made the Top 40: a dance reinterpretation by Sarah Washington hit Number 12 in 1993, and Pop Idol finalist Rik Waller went Top 10 with his rendition in 2002. Whitney's still the one to beat, though: her version has sold 1.64 million copies. Other notable entries Céline Dion is the only star to snare two spots on our Top 20, cementing her place as the queen of love songs. Titanic-soundtracking My Heart Will Go On is her biggest, sailing into sixth place with 1.58 million sales. Bonus fact: My Heart Will Go On came out exactly 20 years ago this week! Not too far behind is Think Twice, Céline's first chart-topper, with 1.37 million sales at 8, one place behind Jennifer Rush's The Power of Love, which Céline herself would later cover. Gareth Gates's 2002 version of Unchained Melody, which actually deposed Will Young from Number 1, comes in eighth with 1.35 million sales, while the highest placed song not to reach Number 1 at all is John Legend's All Of Me, also the most recent track in our countdown. It passed a million sales in 2015 – it's now on 1.25 million. The only female group to make the Top 20 is the Spice Girls, with 1996's Christmas chart-topper 2 Become 1 on 1.14 million sales. And just outside our Top 20, we have a few more million-selling ballads worthy of a mention: Unchained Melody makes yet another appearance, this time from original hitmakers the Righteous Brothers – thanks to its inclusion on '90s movie Ghost, while Take That make another showing at 22 with Rule The World, from the film Stardust. Also bubbling under are classics from Atomic Kitten, with Whole Again (23) and Kylie and Jason's duet Especially For You (24). Adele's Make You Feel My Love comes in 25th. Play those to us and, yes, we will marry you. The Official Top 20 biggest selling love ballads ever in the UK appear below. OCC: Eminem's Top 30 Best Sellers
Eminem's biggest songs on the Official Chart (updated) From My Name Is... to River, OfficialCharts.com reveals the rapper's biggest sellers in the UK. Since landing his breakthrough hit in his teens, Eminem has become one of the rap's biggest international sensations. Having re-emerged last year after a lengthy hiatus with a scathing rap attack against Donald Trump and subsequent album, Revival, Official Charts has looked into the numbers to reveal his biggest UK hits. Since making his debut on the worldwide stage with My Name Is, Eminem has landed 36 Top 40 singles on the Official Chart, 29 of which have gone Top 10, including an almighty eight Number 1s. Check out the official ranking of his 30 biggest hits at the bottom of the page, based, as always, on Official Charts Company data. First up, some highlights... The Real Slim Shady Eminem's first UK Number 1 arrived in the summer of 2000. The lead single from his third album The Marshall Mathers LP was co-produced by his mentor Dr. Dre and caused plenty of controversy at the time for poking fun at pop stars. The track opened with 86,000 sales to land at Number 1 (just ahead of Samantha Mumba's Gotta Tell You) and has notched up 933,000 combined sales to date, including 28.6 million streams. Stan Eminem's disturbing yet gripping tale of an obsessed fan became his second chart-topping single in December 2000. The song gave Eminem's his biggest opening week for a single in the UK to date, racking up 199,000 sales in its first seven days on sale to land at Number 1. Its total combined sales now stand at 1.2 million. Stan is also largely responsible for thrusting featured artist Dido into the limelight. Stan's chorus takes the opening verse of her song Thank You, which went on to become a Top 5 hit six months later. The Monster/Love the Way You Lie When Eminem and Rihanna first teamed up in 2010 on Love the Way You Lie, the pair seemed like a natural fit for a mega-hit. Their lighter-waving mid-tempo ballad struck a chord with the world, but a Number 1 seemed to evade them in the UK, logging four non-consecutive weeks at Number 2. While Love the Way You Lie is Eminem's biggest selling single on the Official Chart with 1.26 million downloads to date, the song ranks as Slim Shady's second biggest hit overall, lagging behind his Number 1 track when it comes to streaming. The pair teamed up again on 2013's The Monster, this time nabbing the Number 1 spot for a single week. The song ranks at Eminem's fourth biggest single with 1.1m combined sales. Lose Yourself Accompanying Eminem's first foray into major motion pictures, 8 Mile, was a killer soundtrack by the man himself. Its lead single, Lose Yourself was hit across the globe and debuted at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in December 2002 with week 1 sales of 71,000. As well as being the star's most successful solo single with 1.62 million combined sales (including 54m streams), Lose Yourself was also the first rap track to ever win an Oscar for Best Original Song. In January 2018, it also overtook Love the Way You Lie to become Marshall's biggest ever UK hit. Further down the Top 30 chart, a handful of the rapper's lower charting tracks make a surprise appearance, while some of his Top 10 singles land just outside. 'Till I Collapse from his 2002 album The Eminem Show places at 15 thanks to a boost in sales in 2009, when it was used in an advert for the then-upcoming game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Elsewhere, his Drake/Kanye/Lil Wayne collaboration Forever is 17th on the list despite its Number 42 peak on the Official Chart, while the Number 90-peaking Shake That ft. Nate Dogg is 26th, placing higher than Top 10 hits such as My Life (with 50 Cent), Ass Like That and Guts Over Fear (with Sia). His latest single River closes the chart at Number 30. The Pussycat Dolls' biggest singles revealed
By Jack White Don't cha wish the Pussycat Dolls would reunite? Well, you're in luck. After rumours of a return for PCD were reported in The Sun last week, PCDReunion.com has been set up, where fans have chance to sign up to the group's newsletter for further announcements. Exciting! Details are hush hush; hush hush (sorry) right now, but according to the reports, the group will be made up by Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, Melody Thornton, Kimberly Wyatt and Jessica Sutta, the line-up that released the final (to-date) PCD album Doll Domination. MORE: View The Pussycat Dolls' full UK chart history, including two Number 1 singles The five-piece are set for a reunion tour according to The Sun, and we wonder if X Factor - where Nicole serves a judge - could be the perfect platform for the girls' first performance together again? The band also originally featured Carmit Bachar for first album PCD, but she would only reunite should Nicole not be present. Speaking in 2012, she said: "A Pussycat Dolls reunion isn’t out of the question. Five of us — and not Nicole — could happen. But all six? Never. Too much water under the bridge.” With the news now out in the open, here's a look at the group's biggest hits on the Official Chart - it makes for *quite* the tour set list. When I Grow Up "Boys call you sexy, and you don't care what they say" - what an opening line, right? Pussycat Dolls kicked off their second album campaign with When I Grow Up, a tongue-in-cheek banger that followed right where Don't Cha left off. This song is all about confidence and is full of sass; traits other tracks such as I Don't Need A Man and Beep also had in spade loads. If it isn't broke, no need to fix it. When I Grow Up reached Number 3 on the Official Singles Chart and also finishes at Number 3 in the Top 10 countdown with 412,000 sales across physical and download formats plus 4.03 million streams. And guys, they wanna have groupies. GROUPIES. Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny) Composed by A.R. Rahman for the hit film Slumdog Millionaire, Jai Ho! was re-imagined for the pop sphere wit the Dolls, this time featuring Nicole Scherzinger because she had a hand in writing it. The Bollywood bop peaked at Number 3 on the Official Singles Chart in April 2009. Look back at that week on the UK Top 100. With 605,000 sales and 5.3 million streams, Jai Ho! is The Pussycat Dolls' second best-selling single in the UK. MORE: 10 girl group stars who went it alone Don't Cha We're back to where it all began at Number 1, as PCD's debut chart topper Don't Cha is their biggest single EVER in the UK. Featuring Busta Rhymes, Don't Cha is an epic display of female empowerment and has been a karaoke classic and X Factor auditionee staple ever since it topped the charts in August 2005. With 634,000 sales, Don't Cha is PCD's best-selling single, and it's prevalence on streaming platforms only skyrocket its (doll) domination even further. Don't Cha has amassed a massive 11.5 million listens in the streaming era. The UK's Official Chart 'millionaires' revealed
I also notice there's vast numbers of songs labelled with the wrong release year. For example, when I copied all the songs into Excel and then deleted all songs listed as released before 2010, Just Dance (incorrectly listed as released in 2010) was one of the biggest sellers of the decade yet to reach 1 million - even though it was released in (and almost all its sales occurred in) 2009.
