By Justin Myers Sam Smith has been a true global success story. Some of the milestones he's hit – a Bond theme, an Oscar, a million-seller, huge album sales – don't happen to some of pop's greats for decades, if at all, but he nailed the lot with only one album under his belt. As he prepares to unveil new music for the first time, we look back at some of Sam's chart highlights. Latch It's not uncommon now for solo stars to get their big break as a featured artist, and Sam is surely the blueprint every aspiring chart-topper wants to follow. He first gained attention on Disclosure's Latch, an atmospheric dance track which also helped propel the electronic duo to stardom. The song peaked at 11 but if fans thought dance was the only direction Sam was heading in, they had a surprise coming up. La La La Although reluctant to be pigeonholed, Sam tested the waters again with popular collaborating artist Naughty Boy, who was also enjoying a recent accent to fame of his own. "I was actually really worried about releasing that track because I didn’t want to be known as a featured artist," said Sam at the time. "I couldn’t have been more wrong!" Together the pair were a ticket to success, with La La La going straight to Number 1 and soon rocketing past a million sales, giving Sam and Naughty Boy seats in an elite club very early on in their career. With 1.07 million copies sold, it's Sam's top selling song, but Sam wasn't done scoring chart feats yet. The accolades begin… Sam kicked off 2014 with considerable buzz around him, topping the BBC's Sound of poll, and scoring the BRIT Awards' Critics' Choice, a hugely influential award previously won by Adele, Ellie Goulding and Florence and the Machine, among others. Money on my Mind His first Number 1 all by himself, Money on my Mind was less a single and more a manifesto, where Sam spoke about what he'd worked to achieve, how he'd worked to get there and why he wanted to do it (clue: not for money, but love, apparently.) It's sold 962,000 across digital and streaming equivalent sales. In the Lonely Hour Sam's debut album is going to be one hard act to follow. It sold 101,700 copies in its first week on sale and broke the record for most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 for a debut album – spending 69 weeks there from its initial debut in June 2014. In the Lonely Hour was the only album to sell a million copies on both sides of the Atlantic in 2014, and altogether has shifted an incredible 2.32 million across all formats, including streaming. It won a Grammy, and contributed to Sam taking away British Breakthrough and the Global Success Award at the 2015 BRITs. Stay with Me Sam's third Number 1 is probably the point people started to see what kind of artistic future Sam envisioned for himself. Both mournful and soulful, Sam began to corner the market in rousing and emotional, yet chilled, songs. It brought him to international attention, too – a Darkchild remix of the song won Record of the Year at the Grammys. Stay with Me is also Sam's biggest song overall, with 1.66 million across digital and streaming equivalent sales, which really boosted the track – it's his most played song on streaming services, with 83 million listens. Blimey. MORE: Look back at all Sam Smith's chart success in his archive Lay Me Down, with John Legend Lay Me Down was originally released back in 2013 when Sam was starting out, gaining acclaim when James Corden called out its brilliance live on air while hosting the BRIT Awards. It peaked at Number 15, then, but no way was its time over. Sam re-recorded it with John Legend and released the duet version as the official Comic Relief single of 2015. It gave him a FOURTH Number 1 and has shifted 421,000 across all formats. Interestingly, the original version peaked lower but has more staying power: it's done 599,000. World: Wow this has been an amazing few years. How on Earth can you top that? Sam Smith: Hold my beer. Writing's on the Wall In over 50 years of James Bond movies and their iconic theme songs, there have been varying levels of chart success and, if we're honest, quality. Sam had some big boots to fill when he was picked to record the theme for Spectre, the follow-up to Skyfall, whose Oscar-winning theme was recorded by none other than Adele. Sam took it all in his stride though, with a stripped back ballad Writing's on the Wall – he didn't even use the movie's name, he's a savage – and did what no other Bond theme had done before. He took it to Number 1! It's sold 626,000 across physical, digital and streaming equivalent units and is Sam's biggest seller on physical format – 18,200 copies. Ooh, and it won a Golden Globe and, yep, the Oscar too – with a speech that made all kinds of headlines. What next? The next single is imminent: Too Good At Goodbyes is out Friday, September 8, and the album is to follow later in the year. Sam's total singles sales so far in his career are over FIVE million (5.06 million to be precise), so we reckon this next era is going to be a big one…
  4. Breakaway never even made the top 20 but still outsold BTHE
  5. Anybody got what BTHE sold in 2005?
  6. Streaming sales too.
  7. Second Hand Heart is by Ben Haenow. She featured on it 2 years ago. Shocked that Behind These Hazel Eyes has been outsold by Second Hand Heart and 2 other songs I don't even know.
  8. Kelly Clarkson is back! American Idol's most famous export has announced a new track is coming this week, with an album to follow. Since her first UK hit Miss Independent reached Number 6 in 2003, Kelly has scored 16 Top 40s here, including nine Top 10s and, of course, a Number 1 single in the shape of My Life Would Suck Without You. MORE: Kelly Clarkson’s chart archive But which one is the biggest of them all? We've crunched the numbers and dived into the archive to count up all the sales and stream and the results are pretty interesting… Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) You might be forgiven for thinking Kelly's sole chart-topper My Life Would Suck Without You would also be her biggest song, but we have to break it to you the honour goes to another song entirely. Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) may have only peaked at Number 8, but thanks to some pretty consistent downloading, along with a 16-week tenure in the Top 40, it finishes out in front with over 620,000 combined chart sales – taking in downloads and streaming equivalent sales – to its name. Because of You Her biggest ballad of them all is tearjerker Because Of You, which didn't even make the Top 5 on release – settling for Number 7 – but has a combined sales and streams tally of 530,000. Since U Been Gone This is possibly the track that really made the world sit up and take notice of Kelly. Since U Been Gone gave Kelly her first UK Top 5 hit. It's her third biggest song in the UK, notching up a tally of 495,000 across all formats. My Life Would Suck Without You She'd waited long enough, but it was My Life Would Suck Without You that would finally deliver the goods and take Kelly to the very top of the Official Singles Chart for the first – and only so far – time in her career. It's got 462,000 combined chart sales under its belt. Heartbeat Song From Kelly's most recent album Piece By Piece, 2015's Heartbeat Song already establishes itself as a classic by storming her all-time chart and heading up-up-up to the Top 5. A big part of its 412,000 tally comes from streaming, with 19.3 million plays cementing it as Kelly's most streamed track since we began counting in 2014. Other highlights Just outside the Top 10 is Kelly's festive favourite Underneath The Tree (11), and classics like Piece By Piece (12), I Do Not Hook Up (13) and Never Again (14) are left out in the cold too. Guess that's what happens when you've got plenty of hits to your name. 9. Shake It Off's sales are actually 1.17 million (1.168 million rounded up)
  10. That's the only song of hers I actually like.
  11. Taylor Swift’s career may have blossomed a little later in the UK than elsewhere (her first UK hit came four years after her US debut), but boy has she made up for it since. In just under a decade, she’s notched up 19 Top 40 hits on the Official Singles Chart, nine of which are Top 10s, plus two Number 1 albums. Not bad, right? That’s amounted to over 8.5 million sales of her singles (when physical, downloads and streaming equivalent sales are combined) - and despite limiting availability of her catalogue on streaming services until very recently, she’s still managed to rack up over 183 million plays across her singles alone. She’s a heavyweight when it comes to albums too; shifting some 2.7 million across her five releases in the UK. She’s got quite the reputation, you could say (sorry). With a healthy batch of hits under her belt and to celebrate the release of her new single Look What You Made Me Do and upcoming album Reputation, Official Charts reveals her biggest hits so far, based on sales and streams, below. Style An instant fan favourite on her 1989 album, Style somehow – somehow – wasn’t quite the hit most assumed it would become, despite safe-bet hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback (and Taylor) at the helm. The track reached Number 21 on the Official Singles Chart (it fared much better in the US where it peaked at 6), its chart chances hampered in part by her decision to keep her music off streaming services. As such, Style is Taylor’s tenth biggest single in the UK, with 372,000 combined sale Love Story Taylor’s breakout hit in the UK was very nearly a Number 1 single, peaking at Number 2 behind Kelly Clarkson’s My Life Would Suck Without You (what a time to be alive). Taylor has the last laugh though – her song has 799,000 combined sales to date - 337,000 more than Kelly’s. As the title suggests, the song literally tells a love story, something Taylor is particularly good at. It’s sweet, enchanting, and once the lyrics have been learned, ridiculously catchy. I Knew You Were Trouble The second proper single from her 2012 album Red, there was much debate over who I Knew You Were Trouble was about, with most speculating it was about her ex John Mayer. The song was a Taylor/Max Martin/Shellback affair and was her first and only foray into the dubstep genre – albeit mildly. In fact, part of the song’s success was down to the wobbly bit in the song where Taylor yells “Oh! Oh!”, which sparked thousands of lols YouTube videos replacing her with everything between a wrestler and a goat. Good times. Shake It Off Taylor didn’t leave anything to chance with the launch of her 1989 album, leading with the peppy, super-catchy, sure-fire hit Shake It Off. It was the moment Taylor not only declared that she belonged among pop’s top dogs, but when she proclaimed herself the world’s biggest popstar, and so it was. It’s fitting, then, that it’s also her biggest single in the UK, with 1.7 million combined sales in the UK (that's a terrible typo!), made up of 960,000 downloads and 20.8 million streams. Despite being a huge success, it just missed out on topping the Official Singles Chart, peaking at 2, behind Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass. 12. By Rob Copsey Kelis is one of pop's greatest chameleons. 18 years after she arrived on the scene shouting her mouth off on Caught Out There, the singer has made her mark on hip-hop, electro, R&B, house and funky soul with relative ease - and often ahead of the curve of her peers. With 16 Top 40 hits on the Official Singles Chart to her name, we've crunched the numbers to reveal her biggest tracks to date. MORE: View Kelis's full Official Chart history Finest Dreams An often forgotten gem in her singles catalogue, the electro-throbbing Finest Dreams was helmed by British producer Richard X (Sugababes' Freak Like Me, Rachel Stevens' Some Girls) and is a mash-up based on a instrumental remix of The Human League track The Things That Dreams Are Made Of. ADVERTISING The track, released in August 2003, gave Kelis her second Top 10 hit and first since her 2000 debut Caught Out There. It finishes 13th on her all-time Top 20 with 42,000 sales. Not In Love "Are you ready?" Enrique asked Kelis in their 2004 hook-up. "Born ready" was, of course, her reply. Not In Love saw Kelis take on Latin pop with the world's ultimate Spanish serenader with impressive results, topping out at Number 5 on the Official Chart. With 112,000 sales, it places as Kelis's ninth best-seller in the UK. Got Your Money Before her debut single proper Caught Out There, Kelis guested on Got Your Money by hip-hop heavyweight Ol' Dirty bast*rd. It was helmed by the Pharrell-fronted Neptunes, who would go on to work with her for the next few years, including production on her debut album Kaleidoscope, which features some of her biggest hits. More on that shortly... Acapella In 2010, after a three year break from music, Kelis re-emerged as an icy electro queen on Acapella, a still-sublime slice of club pop with a near-hymnal chorus. Produced by will.i.am before he was the go-to hitmaker, the track is a dedication to then baby son, Knight. Acapella places as Kelis's third best-seller in the UK with 262,000 sales. Milkshake The blaring synth-funk tones of Milkshake still ring out at clubs across the world today. Helmed by The Neptunes, the track's inventive production and Kelis's vocal performance were groundbreaking at the time and turned all parties involved into household names. As things stand, it's her second biggest selling single, on 338,000 sales. As for what one's milkshake actually is, Kelis once explained: "A milkshake is the thing that makes women special. It's what gives us our confidence and what makes us exciting." Bounce Kelis's best-selling single in the UK is also her most recent appearance on the Official Singles Chart. Off the back of her successful turn to dance music on Acapella, Kelis was enlisted on Bounce, the lead single from Calvin Harris's third album 18 months. The track peaked at Number 2 earned Kelis her 10th Top 10 single in the UK. With 550,000 sales to its name, Bounce is the singer's best-seller to date. It's also her most streamed, with 9.6 million plays. Check out the full Top 20 below. 13. Kind of surprised with Right Round's inclusion though. Justin Timberlake's best sellers list doesn't include Where Is the Love.
  14. By Rob Copsey Kesha. A name that conjures up one word: Bangers. Not the Miley Cyrus kind, but the glitter-throwing, two-fingered saluting IDGAF sort that only she knows how. Over the past eight(ish) years, she's delivered plenty of party starters, and though she's faced some tough times in recent years, she's back and delivering the goods once again. With her long awaited third album Rainbow out this month, Official Charts has crunched the numbers to reveal her 10 biggest singles so far. Across her 15 singles including guest features, Kesha has sold 4.1 million singles and notched up just shy 100 million streams in the UK. But did Tik Tok take the top spot? Where does Timber tumble to? Let's get into the numbers... Your Love Is My Drug Released: May 2010 Chart peak: 13 ADVERTISING "Do you wanna have a slumber party in my basement?". That joyous chorus. Your Love Is My Drug was Kesha's third single from her debut album Animal and reached Number 13 on the Official Singles Chart. It finishes a worthy sixth place on her countdown with combined sales of 250,000. We R Who We R Released: January 2011 Chart peak: 1 When it comes to waving your freak flag in pop, Kesha was a trailblazer. Frank, fearless and unashamedly fun, We R Who We R is peak Kesha. Speaking of, it also reached the peak of the Official Singles Chart in 2011 and has shifted 402,000 combined sales to date. Tik Tok Released: November 2009 Chart peak: 4 Wait, Tik Tok wasn't a Number 1 single? While it topped the charts around the world, Kesha's debut (back when she was Ke$ha) landed at Number 6 and eventually peaked at 4 in the UK. Looking back at its chart run, it was released during the busy Christmas period and was holding its own against big singles from JLS, Cheryl Cole, Rihanna and Black Eyed Peas for a place in the Top 10 - no mean feat for your first release. Regardless, Tik Tok is one of those songs that defined a more carefree time in pop music. With 840,000 combined sales, it's Kesha's second biggest single on her official countdown. Timber Released: January 2014 Chart peak: 1 156 years from now, the world will probably be a very, very different place, but one thing you can be certain of is Timber being whacked on at the office Christmas party. It's a rowdy rodeo romp. A modern day Cotton-Eyed Joe. Nobody knows the exact origins of Cotton-Eyed Joe (research suggests it pre-dates the American Civil War, which started in 1861), but that doesn't matter, because people know it, and in the year 2173, the same will be said about Timber. With 1.3 million combined sales, Kesha's collaboration with Pitbull is her biggest single in the UK. Fun fact: It took 16 people to write Timber, including Pitbull, Kesha and Kesha's mum Pebe. 18. But no sales for Video Games? Strange.
  19. And then went even bigger with album 3.
  20. If WTSMG's sales are that low, then the sales/positions of other albums on last year all time list must be wrong as well.
  21. If it was THIRD albums, Good Girl Gone Bad would head the list, no problem.

  23. Second time very lucky: artists who beat the sophomore slump Stars who turned the curse of the "difficult second album" on its head. By Justin Myers They don't call it "that difficult second album" for nothing – many artists find following up a debut doesn't quite work out as they'd hoped. A few stars have bucked the trend however, either cementing the success of their first album with an even bigger follow-up, or even banishing the ghost of an underperforming debut with a sophomore smash. We look a few acts who made it look like a breeze. Adele Tottenham's brightest star won over critics and fans with her first effort, 19, and sold respectably and spent one week at the top, but it was its successor that went stellar. 21, released three years later in 2011, is one of the biggest sellers of all time, spending 23 weeks at Number 1 and shifting 4.95 million copies. MORE: Track the chart progress of all Adele's UK hit singles and albums Ed Sheeran Ed's debut + didn't exactly do too badly, spending 32 straight weeks in the Top 10 following its release in 2011, including three at the top, but it was x – aka Multiply – that certainly lived up to its name and transformed Ed's success. 74 consecutive weeks in the Top 10, 13 at the top, and a whopping 2.75 million copies sold. MORE: Remind yourself of all Ed Sheeran's chart runs in his archive Amy Winehouse The late great Amy Winehouse attracted a fair bit of attention with her bluesy, raw debut Frank, but it was her second album Back to Black that made the rest of the world sit up and realise a superstar was born, in 2006. Finally scoring her first Top 10 single, Rehab, it became one of the most successful albums of all time – 3.78 million sold. Back to Black's success is even more poignant when you consider it was also Amy's last studio album before her sad passing in 2011. MORE: Amy Winehouse's full Official Chart archive Rihanna While she had a strong start with debut single Pon Da Replay in 2005, not that many people remember (or bought) her first album Music of the Sun, which stalled at Number 35. Thankfully she very quickly followed it up with the much more memorable, and successful A Girl Like Me, which went Top 5 and spawned two huge singles, SOS and Unfaithful. MORE: See all Rihanna's UK hit singles and albums in her archive Eminem The peroxide-bonced rapper certainly made an impression with his debut single and album, but it was record number 2, The Marshall Mathers LP that cemented him with superstar status. Debut The Slim Shady LP sold brilliantly, over a million, and peaked at Number 10 over a year after release, but its follow-up was a chart-topper. Spawning two Number 1 singles, The Real Slim Shady and Stan, The Marshall Mathers LP shifted 2.45 million copies. MORE: See all Eminem's UK hit singles and albums in his Official Chart archive Christina Aguilera Has there ever been a makeover quite so impactful, and successful, as this one? A total transformation from her sugary, self-titled debut, Christina Aguilera's sophomore stomper Stripped was a phenomenon, with a string of Top 10s, including two Number 1s Dirrty and Beautiful, shifting 1.98 million copies. MORE: The UK's Official Top 40 biggest albums of 2017 so far Sugababes As we all know by now, Sugababes didn't have the best of starts, and their ending was pretty gruesome too, but in between, they did rather brilliantly. The trio's debut One Touch suffered disappointing sales and a low chart peak of 26, followed by the departure of founder member Siobhan Donaghy. With new girl Heidi Range on board, second album Angels With Dirty Faces had the good fortune to launch with two Number 1 singles Freak Like Me and Round Round, catapulting all the way to; well, Number 2, but it was a huge seller – over 918,000 copies! MORE: Sugababes' UK hit singles and albums and full chart runs in the archive Oasis There are records that ignore the "difficult second album" curse, and there are those that smash it to pieces. Oasis's Definitely Maybe was always going to be a rough act to follow, with two million copies sold, but (What's The Story) Morning Glory barely even broke a sweat. Four Top 3 singles, including Wonderwall and Number 1 Don't Look Back In Anger, and 10 weeks at the top of the Official Albums Chart, with 4.24 million copies sold. It is, as you can imagine, one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Madonna She's one of the most successful female artists of all time, but back in 1984, following the release of her debut album, Madonna still had plenty to prove. Despite two hit singles, Madonna's self-titled first album had, shall we say, a lacklustre performance, hanging around the lower reaches of the Top 100 and breaking the Top 40 once. Its follow-up, Like A Virgin, released at the end of that year took its time too, but went onto become a Number 1 album, spending 83 weeks in the Top 40. It also boosted that debut – it finally went Top 10 in mid-1985. MORE: Look back on all Madonna's UK hit singles, albums and chart runs in her archive Katy Perry Incredible as it may seem, Katy's debut album, while a strong seller never actually made the Top 10, despite spawning huge Number 1 single I Kissed A Girl. One of the Boys, which has sold 701,000 across all formats, stalled at 11, but follow-up Teenage Dream soon swept away any bad karma. It went straight in at the top in 2010 and a reissue, known as The Complete Confection, brought it storming back to the Top 10 18 months later. It's sold 1.31 million across physical, download and streaming equivalent sales. MORE: All Katy Perry's hits are in her Official Charts archive Ellie Goulding Once the world woke up to Ellie's talent, thanks in part to early hit Starry Eyed and her cover of Elton John's Your Song, her debut album Lights was a huge hit, shifting over 807,000 copies. Second album nerves didn't seem to be in sight, and with good reason – while Halcyon was a bit of a slow-burner, it ended up outselling its predecessor, scoring 1.18 million sales across all formats. And it gave her her first Number 1 single with Burn. Pink While it may have missed the Top 10, Pink's 2000 debut Can't Take Me Home sold pretty well, so you'd expect maybe more of the same for album number two. Pink really switched things up, however, nudging out the R&B of her first record for a tougher, poppier and rocky sound. And the formula certainly worked. 2002's Missundaztood – try getting that one past auto correct on your phone – somehow missed the Number 1 spot (!) but was a huge seller. 1.82 million copies were sold and it spent over seven months in the Official Albums Chart Top 10.
