    Gig: Anastacia

Pop diva Anastacia caused a few jaws to drop late last year when she admitted that "music has never moved me .. to be honest, I find it irritating". Having battles so hard to earn herself a global fan base with her upbeat anthems, her couragous fight against breast cancer and her extensive work for charity, it seems a remarkable act of self-sabotage. Suddenly calling her most recent LP heavy rotation didn't look like such a wise move. But the 40 year olds' fans seem to have decided to write off ths little confession as an aberration and to instead focus on her brand of brassy-pop. Anastacia's emotive leather lunged warbling and memorable singles such as Sick and tired, left outside alone and i'm outta love have clearly built her up a considerable reserve of goodwill. But then good pop music makes you feel more positive about things and sometimes it can do that even when the lyrics suggest heartbreak and thats actually what astacias songs accomplish with panache.

So I wrote them an e-mail

Hi, I saw the latest article in Birmingham Metro about Anastacia, you've used false information to be honest.

Pop diva Anastacia caused a few jaws to drop late last year when she admitted that "music has never moved me .. to be honest, I find it irritating".

That's untrue, the reporter made that up and dramatically misquoted her. She even blogged about it on her official website here: http://www.anastacia.com/news/12-18

Hi fan-ily... "I hope you've all had a fabulous holiday season. I had a great time at home with friends and family, and am now gearing up to kick ass in 2009!!! "So I hear someone's claimed recently that I don't like music! I guess sometimes you get quoted out of context but, just to clear things up, here is how I really feel... I've always been passionate about music. All sorts of music, of all genres - pop, rock and soul. It's what got me into this business in the first place. "For as long as I can remember I've loved singing and performing above anything else, and I've always been thankful that I've been able to do day-to-day what I love doing most. There may be times, after a long stressful day, when I prefer silence to putting on a CD, but I really don't think this alters the fact that as a singer my life is about music. "Anyway, big love for 2009!" Anastacia

I'd appreciate it if you cleared this up or something, thanks.

BEFORE her death from cancer, Jade Goody’s awareness-raising efforts won plaudits from around the world – but singer Anastacia didn’t need her awareness of cancer raised any further.

Goody passed away in March this year after losing her short fight with cervical cancer in what was an incredibly public battle in this media-saturated age.

The former Big Brother contestant featured in swathes of magazines and saw massed coverage on TV, radio and in newspapers as she did her damndest to make young women aware of the dangers of ignoring the disease, as well as providing money for her two children in the process.

Anastacia, pictured, watched the tragedy unfold from afar but it felt like a battle very close to home.

In 2003, three years after conquering the charts with her debut album Not That Kind, Anastasia was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram ahead of a breast reduction.

She underwent surgery and radiotherapy and survived to tell her tale, establishing The Anastacia Fund along the way to do her own bit in raising awareness of breast cancer.

Anastacia knows she was lucky to catch the potential life-taker early.

“I looked at Jade Goody and thought, ‘that could have been me’,” says the singer.

“I believe everything happens for a reason. Jade wouldn’t have known she had cancer if she hadn’t got herself checked out for a TV programme she did and I wouldn’t have got checked out if I hadn’t gone to have a breast reduction.

“My heart goes out to her children and her husband because it’s very hard to watch someone disappear like that, seeing what this thing does to you.

“I appreciate the fact that she really tried her best to raise money for her family before she went. I can still sing and I can smile and laugh but cancer is very real and it doesn’t just do what it did to me.

“It comes in all shapes and sizes and Jade saw a different shape and size of it to me.

“So I would urge everyone to get themselves checked out because if you have a family you might not always be there for them. You could find yourself in stage four (the worst cancer diagnosis) saying ‘but I feel fine, it was only a little pain in my side’.”

During her treatment Anastacia lost her trademark voice for a while but battled back inside of a year and returned with a No1 album, led by the massive hit single Left Outside Alone.

Having also been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in her youth, Anastacia’s continued strength in adversity has made her an inspiration to her legions of fans.

“I guess it’s something I’m aware of because we are talking about it now, but when I hang up the phone after speaking with you I’m back to my normal life; even inspirational women still need to take a shower,” laughs the Chicago-born vocalist.

“But it takes a lot of people to get a person to where they are. Yes, I have a voice but that’s just a gift I have been given and that gift can disappear because of illness, like if I don’t get enough sleep or if I get flu I’ll be singing in Barry White’s key and that’s not what people signed up for.

“So I just continue to be me. I’m five years clean, going on six, but I still do have a very strong edge to making sure I get myself checked out regularly.”

After her brush with mortality Anastacia could have been forgiven for retiring to enjoy her life, but she didn’t – she started of her “new” life by marrying her bodyguard, Wayne Newton, and continued making music and touring.

She arrives in Cardiff tonight singing material from her fourth album, Heavy Rotation, which adds another facet to the musical style she calls “Sprock” – a mix of soul, pop and rock.

This time around she worked with producers better known in hip-hop circles, Ne-Yo and Rodney Jerkins included, and she says the reason her career has known both highs and lows is because she follows her heart rather than other people’s advice.

“I want to do stuff that I want to do, not what other people want me to do, and that means that it won’t always be the cat’s miaow,” she says.

“It won’t always be a worldwide hit, but I think that what makes a normal person’s career.

    “I’m a human, not a robot.”

Anastacia is at Cardiff International Arena tonight. Tickets cost £32-£36 from 029 2022 4488
