I think there will still be some places available after the initial rush. It normally takes 24 hours for them to fill up and I don't think there will be many more people wanting to take part than last time. I might be wrong, of course.
  2. Have you tried blowing your nose? That normally works for me.

Oh thanks, I thought that people who had females last year weren't going to be allowed to have them again this year, to make it fairer. At least, this makes it more likely that people will get the category they want. I wonder if people will choose song titles for their first song that are short so that it will take less time to fill out the form.
  4. @WoW73 I'm just tagging you as you've previously asked to be kept informed of when a new song contest starts.

We have to apply for all three categories on the form and Calum then decides who goes where, that's the way I read it.

Will we be allowed to swap categories after being given them? I'm sure a lot of people want the female category more than I do and all the acts I really want to enter are groups. If I get a female, I'm quite happy to swap with someone who gets a group and really wants a female.
  7. I don't think there was much publicity at the time about Nik Kershaw being the writer so I didn't know and only found out many years later. I think I would put the song higher up as well.
  8. Yes, they can still have been making music in the intervening years.
  9. A lot of these big sellers aren't very good but I have an affection for all of them as they are the soundtrack to my childhood. The Smurf Song is iconic, I was annoyed at the time that it was kept off the top of the chart for six weeks by You're The One That I Want.
  10. You can choose any genre.
  11. BOP IDOL 8 - WHOLE LOTTA HISTORY Welcome to the eighth edition of Bop Idol, the song contest devoted to music from the 21st Century. As Camera Obscura won the last contest, I am your host. For my theme, I have chosen songs by singers, musicians or groups with a lot of history behind them. Specifically, there must be a gap of 10 years or more between the first single, EP or album released by the act you choose and the song you are entering. So any act that released their first single or album before 1990 is eligible. Acts that started in the 1990s are also eligible, but there must still be a gap of 10 years or more so the year range you can choose from will reduce. The rules below will explain this further. The first single or album released by your act doesn't need to be a hit, you can be as obscure as you like. The rules: 1. The song you enter cannot have been a UK top 40 hit single. Please send other singles or album tracks. 2. Please avoid previous Bop Idol entries or a Top 20 finisher in any other song contest on the site. 3. Any other well known songs can still be vetoed by the mods, especially those with over 100 million Spotify streams. 4. Any acts with an artist forum on Buzzjack who are eligible for this theme are not allowed. 5. You can enter a song from 2000-2019 by any act who released their first single, EP or album before 1990, whichever one came first. 6. You can also enter a song from 2000-2019 by an act that released their first single, EP or album in 1990. If their first single/album/EP came out in 1991, you can enter a song from 2001-2019. If it came out in 1992, you can enter a song from 2002-2019, and so on until we get to acts that debuted in 1999 for which the song you enter should be from 2009-2019. The gap could be slightly less than 10 years, say from November 1993 to March 2003 but I'm not bothered about that. 7. This doesn't extend to acts that started after 1999, so for example, you can't send a song from 2016 by an act that started in 2004, the idea of this theme is to see what 20th Century acts have been up to in the 21st Century. 8. If an act were touring in the years that led up to their first record, the origin date will still be the year of their first release. 9. If you choose a singer who was previously part of a group, their first release will be deemed to be their first solo record. 10. A group that have slightly altered their name for legal reasons, like The Fizz, will be acceptable, as long as they still have some of the original members. I think that covers everything! When you have chosen your song, please send me a PM with the artist name, song title and a youtube link. As usual, this is an anonymous song contest, so please do not reveal or hint at your entry. The closing date to submit an entry is Friday 18th September 23.59 BST. Entrants: Addy! 13. I have voted. There were nine songs I liked a lot so they all get points from me plus the next highest scorer.
  14. Thanks, and well done for your 39 today. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 27 Number, Sleep, Delta Goodrem 3 in 10: 3 Labelled With Love, Tempted, Hourglass
  15. Are Friends Electric was the other song that I thought would be in your top four so I got three out of four. The other one I thought might be a dark horse was Hong Kong Garden. I did think of The Model later on if you were counting it as a 70s song. The full album version of Autobahn would be my favourite by Kraftwerk followed by Trans Europe Express. Overall, that's a fantastic top ten.
  16. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 27 Stay Another Day (not Stay Now), Charles & Eddie, Andy Gibb 3 in 10: 3 Billie Jean, Man In The Mirror, Thriller
  17. Thanks. Round 1: 36 Seal Round 2: 27 Disco Inferno, Fordham, the year 3 in 10: 3 It's Not Unusual, Delilah, Kiss
  18. Those were two of the three songs I mentioned that I thought would be in your top four. I Feel Love sounded so ahead of its time when it came out and still sounds so fresh while Life On Mars is my favourite song by David Bowie. Yes, Wuthering Heights is also on that compilation CD so you found the right one on Discogs.
  19. 8th - 14th September 1966 20. I'm A Boy - The Who https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2tWK6uoYAY This is from an abandoned concept album set in the future in which parents can choose the gender of their children and there was some sort of mix-up after a mother ordered four girls and one of them turned out to be a boy. She still wants him to behave like a girl so this is lyrically quite unusual. The guitars, drums and a French horn all add to the song's appeal and it will reach number 2. 31. Walk With Me - The Seekers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oeE1hgvrTo Another pleasant song from this group with the vocal harmonies, some stirring strings and a harpsicord. 34. Land Of 1000 Dances - Wilson Pickett https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-ndZ5cy0MU An energetic song which mentions several types of dance. This is where the "na, na na na na" part of 'Here Comes The Hotstepper' originates from. 35. Little Man - Sonny and Cher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pODVOuWBkqQ There's a Greek/Turkish sound to the instrumentation on this one which will be the pair's biggest hit since I Got You Babe, reaching number 4. It was OK. Record of the week : 38. You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes There's no doubt it has to be this Motown classic. There's nothing too complex here, it's just a catchy song with that pulsating rhythm and a fine lead vocal from Diana Ross. After their last two singles peaked at 40 and 39, this one will go as high as number 3. In the US, it will be their seventh number 1 single.
  20. The points dried up for 10cc in the second half but I'm still happy with 5th place which is my best placing in a Pop Forum Song Contest. Thanks to all who gave points to One Night In Paris. It's track 1 on 10cc's third album, 'The Original Soundtrack' and 'I'm Not In Love' is track 2. Imagine what it would have been like in 1975 buying that album and hearing those two songs back to back for the first time (it was before I'm Not In Love was released as a single). I've seen that 10cc are working on a new album which will be their first since 1995 and that Kevin Godley is involved as well as Graham Gouldman who's been keeping the group going as a live act. Congratulations to uhsting on winning the contest and thanks to Chez for hosting.
  21. The pop bloc not giving any points to my song was expected. It's still not too far behind, though.
  22. Thanks to Julian for the 12 points, Jim for the 10 and Allstar for the 10. I'm not expecting to hold on to the lead but very happy (and surprised) to see 10cc top of the scoreboard at this point.
  23. Thanks to all who have given points to 10cc so far, especially Dobbo for the 12. When this theme came up, I immediately thought of them and this particular song is such a good example of early art pop.
  24. I hadn't spotted that Scene's forum name was in one of the song titles.
  25. I like all six of these so far. I remember Cargo Culte from that song contest and the other five are all 70s classics. Shortly after I bought my first CD player in 1989, I bought a double CD compilation called 'Rock Milestones' which had the full version of Layla on it and that was the first time I had heard the wonderful piano solo in the second half. I would go for Comfortably Numb as Pink Floyd's best song from the 70s but Another Brick In The Wall is still very good. I think I can guess three of the four songs that make up your top four and there's another that I think might be in there as well.
