14th - 20th April 1966 35. The Highway Code - The Master Singers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qngi_jSaXlI This is four schoolmasters reading out the part of the Highway Code that relates to pedestrians in the style of an Anglican chant. It's one of the oddest novelty records I've heard but I enjoyed it and might have made it ROTW in a quiet week. You sometimes hear a talent show judge saying "you could sing the telephone directory and I'd still like it", well, the Master Singers actually followed this up with 'Telephone Directory' but it was never released due to copyright issues. They will reach number 45 later this year with 'Weather Forecast'. 36. That's Nice - Neil Christian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KI2nuRC4MM The only hit for the London singer who puts plenty of personality into his vocal with a marching band type accompaniment. 38. Please Stay - The Cryin' Shames https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wx5-XZX-XxQ A cover of a Drifters song from 1961 produced by Joe Meek. There's a delicate sound to the singer's voice and I like the electric organ in the background. It will be the group's only hit single. 39. (You're My) Soul And Inspiration - The Righteous Brothers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJwLEMLK_bg The Righteous Brothers are no longer working with Phil Spector but they've managed to recreate his wall of sound on this one which will top the US chart. It all sounds glorious but too similar to You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' to stand out on its own. 40. Walkin' My Cat Named Dog - Norma Tanega https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPZVrmJ2HH8 Norma's apartment building didn't allow dogs so she had a cat named Dog and took it for walks. Quite a charming little song with guitar and harmonica. Record of the week : 23. Daydream - The Lovin' Spoonful This is quite a simple song with a sparse production but it puts the listener in a good mood and is well suited to a summer playlist with its whistling and use of the harmonica. It will be the first hit for the Canadian/American group and will peak as high as number 2.

China In Your Hand is one of my favourites from the year, I think I would put it in my top 5.

The Day Before You Came is certainly my favourite Abba song. I know some people speculate it's the day before she was murdered but I would much rather think of it as the day before she met someone who would change her life for the better. Mad World and Living On The Ceiling are synthpop classics. Hymn is a better Ultravox single than Reap The Wild Wind. I knew Donna Summer's State Of Independence long before the original and prefer it to Jon & Vangelis' recording. Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) is fantastic, especially the ten minute version with its extended outro.

7th - 13th April 1966 26. Pied Piper - Crispian St. Peters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ehJ3wH_QHU It's a second top 5 hit for this singer but also his last to reach the top 40. It has a very jolly sound to it with the repeated chorus making up most of the song. 35. Twinkle Toes - Roy Orbison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CyRhrjFOgw A Roy Orbison song that people can have a dance to. It was OK but his voice is better suited to dramatic ballads. 36. Frankie And Johnny - Elvis Presley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM7Nx9bFHfc The title track from Elvis' latest movie is a version of a song from the turn of the century about a murder. He does a good job with his vocal, backed by a jazz band. 38. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Otis Redding https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y55qpkmLNfc Apart from the chorus, Otis makes up his own lyrics for this cover which is done in a sort of scatting style, accompanied by bass guitar and horns. Record of the week : 16. You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - Dusty Springfield It has to be this song which has one of the most recognisable choruses from the 60s. Dusty comes up with a powerful and emotive vocal performance. It originated as an Italian song called 'Lo Che Non Vivo (Senza Te)' from 1965 but now has new English lyrics. After five solo top 10 hits, Dusty will finally have her first number 1 single, spending one week at the top of the chart.

I liked most of Rosalia's songs and she was sometimes top 3 in my vote, this one I wasn't so keen on. A couple of Chappell Roan's songs were good, the rest were not my thing, sorry. Great to see each category still has at least two acts left.
