Nik Kershaw's song for the first live show would have been the top 10 hit 'Don Quixote'.

Great to see Great Britain win three gold medals in half an hour today at the World Indoor Championships. Georgia Hunter Bell, Molly Caudery and Keely Hodgkinson have added to Josh Kerr's gold medal from yesterday.

I did have the same idea as Dandy for that last round and might have sent my favourite track from Nik Kershaw's most recent album from 2020 which I think is his best album since his first two as I didn't think he stood a chance of being in the top 3 but I decided just to go with I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me as his swansong.

I think that as we could only pick five songs, a few artists might not have scored any points in that round.

I didn't think Nik Kershaw would get very far so my plan was just to front load with The Riddle, Wouldn't It Be Good and I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me but as The Riddle did so well in round 1 and the points were carried over to round 2, I was able to sneak in an album track, Gone To Pieces. As that was also quite well received, I went with Dancing Girls as my bop. After my album track, You Might, I took a bit of a risk with Sometimes but wanted to include something that wasn't from Nik's first two albums. I was then able to finish with two of Nik's best known songs so I feel I took him as far as I could. My one mistake was maybe I should have started with Wouldn't It Be Good and kept The Riddle for the battleground round. I'm pleased that a few people who weren't familiar with his music liked some of the songs I submitted. For anyone who doesn't know, Nik wrote the number 1 single 'The One And Only' for Chesney Hawkes.

The award winning video was directed by Jonathan Glazer who had first pitched the concept to Marilyn Manson for one of his singles but he rejected it.

35. Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing 1005pts Writer - Mark Knopfler Top scores - Scene 50, Cymro87 49, danG 48 Low scores - AaronTM 3, Chez Wombat 3, vibe 4, Leonardo 4, Jester 4 Average score - 23.4 Sultans Of Swing was named after a jazz band that Mark Knopfler had seen perform in a near empty South London pub. It did nothing when first released in 1978 but was reissued after reaching number 4 in the US in 1979. It was the first of five top 10 singles for the London group.

I've noticed !!! has been lurking in some of these rounds so I'm predicting she is behind FKA Twigs.

There was a bit of ELO in that Conan Gray song so I voted for it.

What a shame that the retro artists all missed out there.

It was written about a music industry party they had attended. Gerry Rafferty sang lead vocals in the style of Bob Dylan but Joe Egan is miming them in this video as Gerry had already left the group.

Coming from an opera background, he certainly puts in a capable performance of the song. 32. Heartaches - Vince Hill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0czFLPVCqj4 Vince Hill covers a song from 1931 and keeps to that pre-war sort of sound. 35. Elusive Butterfly - Val Doonican https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FF0m-580B4 We have two versions of this song and Val does a good job with the mid-tempo ballad, aided by backing singers and some strings. 38. I Met A Girl - The Shadows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4SJEMZE140 Another single with vocals from them and there's a country twang to it. They come up with some good vocal harmonies. 39. The Sound Of Silence - The Bachelors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hFAJtBHtLI This is much better from the Bachelors as they are covering a contemporary song this time but obviously inferior to the original version by Simon & Garfunkel who will appear soon with a different track. It will go all the way to number 3, giving the group their biggest hit since 1964. Record of the week : 21. Elusive Butterfly - Bob Lind The original version recorded by its writer charts in the same week at Val Doonican's rival cover and is preferable. There's a wistful sound to his vocal and the strings are gorgeous with the guitar and drums keeping up the rhythm. The single will spend two weeks at number 5, the same position that Val's version will peak at. Bob Lind is 83 now and released a new album just two months ago.

Rolloland finally won its first song contest yesterday with London band Archive winning the first Lottery spin off contest. We had been given the theme of a song from a year ending in 9 and chose 'Collapse/Collide' from 2009. The contest was held in Lotunia and Archive triumphed with a winning margin of eight points over runners-up Pestolia.
