There aren't many no.1 singles that don't have a verse/chorus structure so to have one as late as 2007 was very refreshing. The only dilemma I had was which song to put in 3rd place but the Adele one has a bit more ambition to it. Sorry to keep putting Zara last but all her songs have been painful to listen to.

That's a shame Sonay couldn't quite put her away, she was playing so well to be 6-2 2-0 up but in a big final, there's always going to be a comeback by the opponent. She was running out of energy in that final set. It's still been a great week for her.

Sorry, it was just me being a grumpy old man when I like music from a time when almost every artist was talented enough to create music on their own without having to constantly seek help from other acts because they are lacking in inspiration. If you take the Robyn song, for example, and we were all able to vote, do we base our score just on her vocal or do we base it on the music as well which is from Royksopp who are a group who are not in the contest, I'm always a bit uncertain what to do when I'm voting. The same would have applied to Clean Bandit and Zara. The songs from the eliminated acts, Agnes and Leona, were solo songs in the solo female category recorded with the musicians that they had backing them at the time so I just feel they were more in the spirit of the contest. That's just my opinion anyway, no need to change the rules just for me.

I've said in previous editions, features should not be allowed. It's not fair on the acts that don't need them.

Great to see New Order and Depeche Mode through with two of their best singles. The Bananarama song is a good one too.

I know most of the songs well but I had a listen to the whole of the playlist and have sent my vote in now.

I've enjoyed following this from the 60s to the 20s, very well presented and your commentaries were always an interesting read. Out of your number 1s for each decade, I would choose 'Enjoy The Silence' as being the best one.

So the eliminated mentors will feel bad for leaving the competition, the judges will feel bad for putting them out and the people who progress will feel lucky they got a judge that favours either pop or more alt leaning pop. Nobody's going to be happy at the end of this round.

It's notable for the banjo which is played through a tape delay to give it that echoey sound. This is another good song from the group and will go as high as number 2. 34. Time Drags By - Cliff Richard and The Shadows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVVfl_9VDQI This is a bit different for Cliff with a bluegrass style to the music and barber shop vocals from the Shadows. The harmonica was played by Jimmy Page. Not bad. 35. Beauty Is Only Skin Deep - The Temptations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjjSwKzeLdw Personality is more important than looks in a girl is the gist of this one which has the usual Motown sound. 39. High Time - Paul Jones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fe7m9a_JzQ The first solo single since leaving Manfred Mann will be a success, reaching number 4. It's quite simple, musically and lyrically, but has a catchy chorus. 40. All That I Am - Elvis Presley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrnEaGHyRnA A song from Elvis' latest movie, 'Spinout'. He sings it well but otherwise it's a mundane ballad. Record of the week : 19. Reach Out I'll Be There - The Four Tops After their first three hits all failed to reach the top 20, the Four Tops finally have the big hit single they deserve. I love the drum sound on the intro that sounds like a galloping horse and then Levi Stubbs comes in with that marvellous lead vocal backed by the harmonies from the other three. The chorus also stands out, making this one of the best number 1s from the year. It will spend three weeks at the top of the chart.
