  2. Thanks, and well done for your 39. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 21 The O Jays, The Pain, I Wanna Hold Your Hand (I knew Dollar did a Beatles song but couldn't think of it), If We Hold On Together 3 in 10: 1 Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay
  3. 54 points Brandon Flowers - Crossfire Kanye West - Love Lockdown Released in 2010, this was Brandon Flowers' debut solo single and is still his only top 40 hit on his own. Love Lockdown came out two years earlier and is the second Kanye West song to drop out.
  4. 53 points Steve Lacy - Bad Habit From 2022, this is one of the more recent singles to receive votes. On the Billboard chart, it brought to an end Harry Styles' fifteen week run at number 1 with 'As It Was'.
  5. 52 points Mama Cass - It's Getting Better t.A.T.u. - All About Us From 2005, All About Us was the third and final top 40 hit for the Russian duo. After the Mamas & the Papas split up in 1968, Mama Cass embarked on a solo career and It's Getting Better was one of two top 20 singles for her. Five people voted for it.
  6. 50 points Electronic - Get The Message Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr combined to form Electronic and had eight top 40 hits from 1989 to 1999. Get The Message was released in 1991 as their second single.
  7. All the winners can be found on the pinned archive thread.
  8. Congratulations, Chez. Onyx was my favourite new discovery from this contest, it wouldn't sound out of place on Moon Safari by Air so it's 20 years ahead of its time. Thanks to Wardy for hosting this contest and for the results presentation this evening. Thanks to all those who voted for Liar, especially Nine And 3/4 for its top score of 10 points. It's my 102nd favourite song of all time.
  9. On the scoreboard, it looks like a forum member called Astrological Mix has entered the song in 1st place.
  10. I wasn't expecting to hear my BJSC entry by Prefab Sprout being sampled on that song by Out Of Order when I listened to it.
  11. Winter was a good discovery, very calming.
  12. I wasn't sure who would have sent Peter Gabriel, great song choice, Julian.
  13. It's close at the top for the moment.
  14. Not a surprise that Jester was behind Pulp.
  15. Round 1: 30 B*Witched, Still Round 2: 36 Everybody (I knew Backstreet's Back but not the word before it) 3 in 10: 1 Dreams (I always forget her songs)
  16. 49 points The Pogues and The Dubliners - The Irish Rover Portishead - All Mine Portishead had five top 40 hits from 1994 to 1998 and this was the only one to reach the top 10. The Irish Rover goes back to the 19th Century with the combined talents of The Pogues and The Dubliners updating it in 1987, 20 years after the latter group had reached number 7 with 'Seven Drunken Nights'.
  17. 48 points Shed Seven - Going For Gold Shed Seven had fifteen top 40 hits from 1994 to 2003 but this was the only one to reach the top 10.
  18. 47 points Layo & Bushwacka! - Love Story (vs. Finally) Layo and Bushwacka! were British DJs Layo Paskin and Matthew Benjamin. This single from 2003 featured samples from Nina Simone, Devo and The Kings Of Tomorrow.
  19. 46 points Miley Cyrus featuring Dua Lipa - Prisoner Samantha Fox - Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry Pink - Walk Me Home In 1987, this Stock, Aitken and Waterman written song gave Samantha Fox her third and final top 10 hit. Four years later, Don't Cry was a fifth top 10 single for Guns N' Roses. Pink still has one song left.
  20. 27th January - 2nd February 1966 17. Can You Please Crawl Out Of Your Window - Bob Dylan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUeyZs9LV6Y Bob has a full band behind him on this one so musically it's a bit broader than I would expect from him. The lyrics are not easy to interpret but I think the subject of the song has a partner who exerts too much control over her. 34. Second Hand Rose - Barbra Streisand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCtrcAp3TEY Barbra's only hit in the 1960s is a version of a Fanny Brice song from 1921 which she does in the same music hall style from that era. It will go on to be used in her 1968 film, 'Funny Girl'. 35. Recovery - Fontella Bass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8mGiTwLFYs Not as engaging as 'Rescue Me' but she sings it well, aided by backing vocalists and the brass section. 36. Attack - The Toys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4otDkwwNryo The Toys reach some high notes on this follow-up to 'A Lover's Concerto'. Quite an enjoyable listen. 37. Breakin' Up Is Breakin' My Heart - Roy Orbison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYksZ_GGHLk A faster pace to this than most of his songs and it's OK but not one of his best. 39. Don't Make Me Over - The Swinging Blue Jeans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNXkisV-1Sk A Bacharach & David song first recorded by Dionne Warwick. There's a good package here with the vocals, melody and string arrangement all coming together nicely. It will be the last of their five top 40 hits. They are still going but with none of the original members. 40. Tchaikovsky One - Second City Sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NCe7cl7cis A piano led instrumental with some vocal 'aaahs' coming in towards the end. It's a bit of a curiosity but a welcome addition to the top 40. Record of the week : 38. These Boots Are Made For Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra By a large margin, this takes the award. It's that descending double bass line that really makes it stand out along with the sassy vocal from Nancy and the brass instrumental parts. The single will spend four weeks at number 1.
  21. I think Space Art will do well. They got a good reaction at the listenthrough.
  22. Round 1: 36 Spanish Round 2: 33 Maroon 5 3 in 10: 3 Club Tropicana, Wham Rap, The Edge Of Heaven
  23. 45 points The Beach Boys - Heroes And Villains Backstreet Boys - The Call Eternal - Just A Step From Heaven Sum 41 - Fat Lip Brian Wilson spent about 30 days in the studio trying to record this song for the 'Smiley Smile' album but eventually discarded everything and started again with this simpler arrangement which was put out as a single. The album was never completed. I'm more familiar with Brian's 2004 version with a new band when he recorded the whole album as closely as he could to what it would have sounded like in 1967. Eternal have three number 8 singles but 'Just A Step From Heaven' was the only one to receive votes. The Backstreet Boys depart after the third of their songs goes out.
  24. 44 points A-ha - I've Been Losing You Bellini - Samba De Janeiro Birdy - Wings Dr. Dre featuring Eminem and Skylar Grey - I Need A Doctor Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home A-Ha and Fine Young Cannibals both lose the second of their two number 8 singles with all four of them charting from 1985 to 1986. It's a bad day for Eminem who makes a second appearance.
