  1. Thanks for taking us through the 1994 number 1s, DaTilt. I think my top 5 would be: 1. D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better 2. Stiltskin - Inside 3. East 17 - Stay Another Day 4. Doop - Doop 5. Whigfield - Saturday Night It was a poor year for number 1 singles so I'm not giving a position to anything else.
  2. I suppose that if the longest song wasn't me, there was a good chance it might be Chez.
  3. Round 1: 33 Franz Ferdinand Round 2: 30 Heart Of Gold, Crush, TV Show 3 in 10: 3 With A Little Help From My Friends, Sweet Little Mystery, Goodnight Girl
  4. I think Basement Jaxx will be the most likely winner.
  5. It's good to see the Moody Blues get a 9 there with 'Blue World'. They were close to getting another top 40 hit in 1988 with the fabulous 'I Know You're Out There Somewhere', which peaked at number 52, but the older groups weren't getting much radio airplay by that time. Mama by Genesis is the best single of 1983. Come Back And Stay, Crushed By The Wheels Of Industry, Confusion and Chance are all very good.
  6. I am currently putting together a playlist of 1980s singles that failed to make the top 40 and added 'To France' to it this morning. I hadn't noticed that it was in this contest so it's a bit of a co-incidence. Good to see a song from the 80s win the main BJSC. Well done Addy.
  7. Howard Jones - New Song Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know Depeche Mode - Love In Itself Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
  8. Thanks. Round 1: 33 Slade, the year Round 2: 33 Ladies' Night, Alize 3 in 10: 3 Breathing, Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting
  9. 17 please
  10. Well done John for all those 39s. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 33 Joe Cocker, the year 3 in 10: 3 Emma, No Doubt About It, I'll Put You Together Again
  11. Thanks, Jade. Round 1: 30 Climax Blues Band, I Ain't Gonna Stand For It Round 2: 33 Mel C, the year 3 in 10: 3 Only You, Don't Go, Nobody's Diary
  12. I don't like many of these 1994 number 1s but this is a good one. The singer, Ray Wilson, went on to join Genesis two years later after Phil Collins left but they only did one album with him before Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford decided to bring the group to a close. That was a shame as he's a good vocalist.
  13. 26th May - 1st June 1966 26. Once There Was A Time / Not Responsible - Tom Jones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-8C7vBuwnU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6nZ8gw24YM The first side is a ballad while the second is more up-tempo. Neither one stands out but Tom sings them both with great gusto. 32. I'm Coming Home Cindy - Trini Lopez https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY-SdIfkIUM Trini's first top 40 hit since 1963 but also his last one. It's an upbeat song with a good contribution form the brass section. Record of the week : 25. Nothing Comes Easy - Sandie Shaw Just three singles this week and I didn't know any of them. This seems to be the best one, the title refers to it not being easy to get her man and then not being easy to dump him after she realises she doesn't want him. She delivers an expressive vocal and the bass guitar is quite prominent along with the acoustic guitar and drums. The single will spend two weeks at number 14.
  14. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 39 💥 3 in 10: 1 Living Next Door To Alice
  15. Round 1: 36 The year (one year out) Round 2: 36 Rose Royce 3 in 10: 3 The Cutter, The Killing Moon, Nothing Lasts Forever
  16. Congratulations Rooney on winning this again, a deserved title after leading for most of the season. I'm happy with a second place finish. Thanks to Houdini for running this over the season.
  17. Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Manchester United Burnley 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal Fulham 2-2 Newcastle United Liverpool 2-1 Brentford Manchester City 2-0 Aston Villa Nottingham Forest 1-2 AFC Bournemouth Sunderland 1-1 Chelsea Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Everton West Ham United 2-1 Leeds United
  18. Round 1: 36 Dangling On A String Round 2: 27 The year, Bobby Goldsboro, Winters 3 in 10: 3 My Coo Ca Choo, Jealous Mind, I Feel Like Buddy Holly
  19. There were better, more complex songs on ELO's 1983 album but Rock'n'Roll Is King was the obvious choice for the lead single as it had a basic singalong tune. Fish came up with some very poetic lyrics for Garden Party as he did for many other Marillion songs. Forbidden Colours is sublime, Moonlight Shadow is still well remembered, while When We Were Young I'd put in my top 3 Bucks Fizz songs. That still leaves us with War Baby, Come Live With Me, IOU and Wherever I Lay My Hat, all very good songs so this latest batch might be the best one so far.
  20. I'm happy to have a week off as well, thanks.
  21. Round 1: 36 The year Round 2: 33 Never Too Much (I knew the singer but not the title) 3 in 10: 3 Belfast Child, Up On The Catwalk, Promised You A Miracle
  22. Well done John on a double 39. Round 1: 36 The year (one year out) Round 2: 30 Kim Wilde, A Child's Prayer 3 in 10: 3 Tragedy, 5678, Deeper Shade Of Blue
  23. The CD single seems to include the video. Amazon have some copies of it for sale: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anything-You-CD-Stamford-Amp/dp/B00006LENT
  24. Round 1: 27 It's A Love Thing, Foolish Beat Round 2: 33 Cold Shoulder 3 in 10: 3 Bad Romance, Alejandro, Telephone
  25. 19th - 25th May 1965 30. I Love Her - Paul and Barry Ryan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9zpwR707DI There's a lavish sound to the production on this with the strings and tubular bells backing up the sumptuous vocals. 33. Eight Miles High - The Byrds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_xx5gxz5zA There's some really innovative and intricate guitar work on this psychedelic rock song which will only reach number 24 but is now more appreciated in retrospect. 34. When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt4J-lml3bA This will reach the top 5 in both 1966 and 1987. I like the organ intro and the brass parts later on and, of course, there's a skilled vocal from Percy. 39. Confusion - Lee Dorsey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMZo-5z7T8c This sounds a bit messy and amateurish compared to today's other four songs. Record of the week : 5. Paint It, Black - The Rolling Stones The Byrds and Percy Sledge were big contenders this week but I've gone for this one from the Rolling Stones. The drums and guitars keep up a persistent rhythm and the use of the sitar makes it stand out. It's the group's most streamed song with 1.6 billion streams and also finished first in Buzzjack's Rolling Stones rate so how could I not pick it? The single will spend one week at number 1.
