  3. Round 1: 33 The year, Would I Lie To You Round 2: 39 💥 3 in 10: 1 Let's Put It All Together
  4. 1. Robyn - Dancing On My Own 1526pts Writers - Robyn, Patrik Berger Top scores - Liamski689 50, dandy* 50, chrissmith276 50 Low scores - Scone1 12, Popchartfreak 13, Bror 16 Average score - 35.5 Dancing On My Own is Buzzjack's favourite UK number 8 single, finishing 70 points ahead of 'Back To Black'. Robyn is the first solo artist to win one of these polls since Madonna won the number 1 single poll with 'Like A Prayer'. 20 voters out of 43 put the song in their top 10 while no one put it in their bottom 10. Released in 2010, the song was Robyn's fourth top 10 hit. A cover version by Calum Scott reached number 2 in 2016. It's a double celebration for Robyn this evening as she also has her first top 10 album with 'Sexistential'.
  5. 2. Amy Winehouse - Back To Black 1456pts Writers - Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson Top scores - AaronTM 50, Alex! 49, DaTilt 49, Jason 49, musicfan97 49 Low scores - gasman449 8, King Rollo 9, JackJones 15 Average score - 33.9 Back To Black finishes just five points above 'Smooth Criminal'. Released in 2007, it only got to number 25. It reached its peak position of number 8 in 2011 following Amy Winehouse's death and was her third top 10 single.
  6. I think song 2 is the best one with song 4 in second place. I see they are on Spotify as well. Their most streamed song is 'Old Yazoo' with 3.9 million streams which is quite a lot.
  7. 31st March - 6th April 1966 26. The Ballad Of The Green Berets - Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZXHsiFaUFM A US number 1 single so I remember it from the Sunday listening sessions. I don't know why anyone in Britain at the time would want to buy this American patriotic nonsense. 31. Supergirl - Graham Bonney https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Vp1qZoQUU A well produced pop song with good use of the piano and saxophone and some falsetto from the singer. This will be his only hit. 34. Alfie - Cilla Black https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp5YsIPlVJI Bacharach and David wrote this for the film 'Alfie'. Cilla sings the quiet parts well but the bigger sections are an acquired taste as always seems to be the case with her vocal approach. 38. I Put A Spell On You - The Alan Price Set https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ0MAFovbrs Alan Price's first hit since leaving The Animals is this cover of a well known song. It showcases his skills on the organ and he also puts in a passionate vocal performance, very good. 39. Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - Cher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qePKIa6Pmxc This will be a top 3 hit for Cher and it's a good one with the violin playing really standing out. I'm more familiar with Nancy Sinatra's cover after it being sampled on that Audio Bullys song from 2005. 40. A Legal Matter - The Who https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvl5oGo7sv8 Substitute is still climbing the chart and this single has been released by the Who's producer without their permission after some dispute. Sung by Pete Townshend, it's a decent rock song but not as good as Substitute and will only get to number 32. Record of the week : 29. Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel Another well known act make their chart debut this week. The song has a great melody with the tempo changing from slow to faster and back again. The acoustic guitar, drums and vocals are all top notch. There's a plaque at Widnes railway station proclaiming that Paul Simon wrote the song there. The single will peak at number 9.
  8. 3. Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal 1451pts Writer - Michael Jackson Top scores - Mack 49, GreyAsh 48, Leonardo 48 Low scores - Yog1963 1, Uls2000 10, jimwatts 11 Average score - 33.7 The poll won't be won by a solo male either as Michael Jackson is the last one left. There weren't that many to start with, Plastic Bertrand and Black were the only other ones in the final. Smooth Criminal is also the highest placed song from the 20th Century and finishes more than 100 points ahead of Enola Gay. It was the seventh single to be released from the 'Bad' album, coming out more than a year after the album.
  9. 4. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Enola Gay 1343pts Writer - Andy McCluskey Top scores - DaTilt 50, Leonardo 50, Chez Wombat 50 Low scores - vibe 1, chrissmith276 3, Alex! 6 Average score - 31.2 The polls for ultimate number 2 single all the way through to ultimate number 7 have been won by groups but that will not be the case this year as OMD are the last group left. From 1980, Enola Gay was the first of seven top 10 hits for the Merseyside band. The Enola Gay aircraft that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima was named after Enola Gay Tibbets who was the pilot's mother. She was still alive, aged 87, when the song came out.
  10. Round 1: 36 Sound (thought it was Light, like the contestant) Round 2: 39 💥 3 in 10: 3 Alright, Moving, Richard III
  11. 1st Abba - Chiquitita 2 Scissor Sisters - Mary 3 Rosalia - Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti 4 David Bowie - Five Years 5 Conan Gray - Forever With Me 6 Kelly Clarkson - Piece By Piece (Idol Version) 7 Delta Goodrem - Not Me, Not I 8 Lily Allen - Pussy Palace 9 Chappell Roan - Casual 10 Atomic Kitten - The Last Goodbye 11 Haim - Gasoline 12 Florence + the Machine - Cosmic Love 13 Troye Sivan featuring Betty Who - Heaven
  12. 5. Linkin Park - In The End 1322pts Writers - Brad Delson, Chester Bennington, Joe Hahn, Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon Top scores - CowTzy 50, Julian 49, chrissmith276 49 Low scores - King Rollo 4, AH Gold 5, Jaz13music 7 Average score - 30.7 From 2001, In The End was the first top 10 hit for the Californian rock band. With more than 3 billion streams, it has a place in Spotify's top 50 most streamed songs of all-time list. The single returned to the top 20 in 2017 following the suicide of Chester Bennington.
  13. 6. Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends 1321pts Writers - Green Day Top scores - Mack 50, musicfan97 50, Jason 47, Chez Wombat 47 Low scores - dandy* 3, marcinjaro 9, AH Gold 13 Average score - 30.7 Green Day won the number 5 single poll three years ago with 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams' and they have a high placing again this year with another track from the 'American Idiot' album. The title comes from something the group's frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, said to his mother after his father's funeral.
  14. I can only think of two songs when James come up so I'm not as familiar with their back catalogue. Glad you enjoyed it. Round 1: 30 Funny Funny, Mistake Round 2: 36 Be Loved 3 in 10: 3 When The Going Gets Tough, Words, No Matter What
  15. Yes please.
  16. Thanks, and well done John on a double 39 today. Round 1: 36 You Know How To Love Me Round 2: 39 💥 3 in 10: 3 Truly, All Night Long, Hello
  17. Congratulations AllStarBySmashMouth, 'Unarchiver' was 2nd in my vote so it's great to see it win. Thanks to all who voted for 'Acolyte', it seems it either got a big score or nothing at all from most voters. 4th place is a good placing for it. And thanks to Lewis for doing an excellent job hosting this edition.
  18. Thanks uhsting for that score of 10.
  19. Thanks Julian for the 10, that will push my song a bit further up.
  20. Thanks to all who have given points to Delphic so far, especially AllStarBySmashMouth and matto for the 12s. I bought the album when it came out so it's been an instrumental I've liked for many years and it fitted this theme nicely. I'm pleased to see my top 2, The Knife and Blood Cultures, at the top of the scoreboard.
  21. 7. The Beatles - Yesterday 1306pts Writers - John Lennon, Paul McCartney Top scores - ...ready for it 49, Jade 48, Julian 47 Low scores - Jason 2, detonate 2, ElectroBoy 11 Average score - 30.4 Yesterday is the oldest song in the final, first appearing on the Beatles 1965 album 'Help!'. It was not released as a single in the UK as it was a solo recording by Paul McCartney and too different from what they were doing at the time. It was released in the US, topping their singles chart for four weeks. After the expiry of the Beatles contract with EMI in 1976, it was finally released as a single in the UK.
  22. I'm posting my poll results at the moment so will comment later on.
  23. 8. Rufus and Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody 1244pts Writer - David 'Hawk' Wolinski Top scores - Yog1963 48, AaronTM 48, vibe 47 Low scores - CowTzy 3, Chez Wombat 8, Jester 10 Average score - 28.9 Chaka Khan had joined the funk group Rufus in 1973 before launching her solo career five years later. She continued to contribute to some of their recordings, including this one from 1983. A remix of the song got to number 6 in 1989 while a cover version by LL Cool J topped the chart in 1997. Richard X vs Liberty X and Felix Jaehn featuring Jasmine Thompson have also had top 3 hits with covers.
  24. I mentioned on the listenthrough that I recognised the noise at the start of song 2 (Feed The Addiction) but couldn't recall where from. I have now remembered it's from Queen's soundtrack to Flash Gordon. They included some of the sounds from the film and it can be found in the last few seconds of track 2, 'In The Space Capsule'.
  25. 9. Mary J. Blige - Family Affair 1237pts Writers - Mary J. Blige, Bruce Miller, Andre Young, Camara Kambon, Michael Elizondo Top scores - vibe 50, detonate 49, Alex! 46, Julian 46 Low scores - AH Gold 1, King Rollo 2, Scone1 9 Average score - 28.8 Another song that started as an instrumental, written by Dr. Dre and offered to Rakim to add some rapping to but he turned it down. It was then given to Mary J. Blige with the finished song spending six weeks at number 1 in the US. It was her fifth UK top 10 hit.
