  1. Thanks, and well done on your 39s. Round 1: 33 Chairmen Of The Board Round 2: 36 The year 3 in 10: 3 Wired For Sound, Carrie, Move It
  2. 24. Katrina and the Waves - Walking On Sunshine 1107pts Writer - Kimberley Rew Top scores - ...ready for it 47, AaronTM 42, vibe 39 Low scores - Scone1 2, dandy* 4, rio309 7, danG 7 Average score - 25.7 It was all about consistency for Walking On Sunshine with only two people putting it in their top 10 and just five in their bottom 10. An earlier 1983 version was released as a single and didn't chart, this is a 1985 re-recording. The group famously went on to win the Eurovision Song Contest for the UK in 1997.
  3. 25. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 1102pts Writer - Michael Jackson Top scores - ...ready for it 48, Cymro87 46, ElectroBoy 42 Low scores - Yog1963 2, Jason 4, jimwatts 5 Average score - 25.6 This was the fourth single to be taken from the huge selling album 'Thriller' and was in the top 40 at the same time as 'Cruel Summer'. An earlier version had been recorded for Michael's 1978 'Off The Wall' album but didn't make the cut. The Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango received an out of court settlement after claiming that the hook from his song 'Soul Makossa' had been used without his permission.
  4. 26. Bananarama - Cruel Summer 1099pts Writers - Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, Steve Jolley, Tony Swain, Keren Woodward Top scores - Mango 50, Yog1963 49, GreyAsh 49, AH Gold 49 Low scores - CowTzy 2, Scone1 4, jimwatts 6 Average score - 25.5 From the summer of 1983, this was Bananarama's fifth top 10 single. It also reached the Billboard top 10 the following year after featuring in the film 'The Karate Kid'. A remix returned the song to the top 20 in 1989 while a cover version by Ace Of Base got to number 8 in 1998 (scoring 25 points in the first round).
  5. From his next album, I love 'You're A Big Girl Now' and from the third one, 'Feel Like Change'. There's also an early single called 'More Than The Sun', I don't think it's on Spotify but it can be found on youtube (the 1984 version is much better than the 1982 one). Colin was certainly one of the best vocalists from the 80s.
  6. 1st David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes (an easy choice, one of his best songs) 2nd Atomic Kitten - Be With You (a good interpolation of ELO's Last Train To London so has to be 2nd) 3rd Abba - Super Trooper (not one of their best singles but still far ahead of the other 12 songs in this round) 4 Delta Goodrem - Believe Again 5 The Corrs - Irresistible 6 Scissor Sisters - She's My Man 7 Haim - If I Could Change Your Mind 8 Rosalía - Pienso En Tu Mira - Cap.3: Celos 9 Kelly Clarkson - Never Again 10 Lily Allen - Madeline 11 Conan Gray - Maniac 12 Florence + The Machine - Hurricane Drunk 13 Troye Sivan - Bloom 14 Chappell Roan - Red Wine Supernova 15 Nelly Furtado - Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)

It was reissued in 1993 after the success of the number 1 single 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That).
  8. 28. Black - Wonderful Life 1073pts Writer - Colin Vearncombe Top scores - jszmiles 50, Uls2000 49, LKF 49 Low scores - deepinside 1, gasman449 2, Cymro87 2 Average score - 24.9 Wonderful Life only got to number 72 in 1986 but was reissued after 'Sweetest Smile' reached number 8 the following year. The beautifully photographed video was filmed in Southport and Wallasey. Black was the Liverpudlian singer Colin Vearncombe. He moved to Ireland but sadly died in 2016, two weeks after a car accident.
  9. 29. It was the sixth out of eleven top 40 hits.
  10. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 30 The year, Dream A Little Dream Of Me 3 in 10: 2 Car Wash, Is It Love You're After
  11. Reap The Wild Wind is good but I prefer the next two singles to come from the Quartet album. Hard To Say I'm Sorry and Just What I Always Wanted are my other two picks from that batch.
  12. As a novelty record, I don't mind Star Trekkin. I watched the repeats of Star Trek in the 1970s so could appreciate the humour in it. I do like Reet Petite but don't think I would have put it much higher than this.
  13. 30. Bananarama - Venus 1046pts Writer - Robbie van Leeuwen Top scores - ...ready for it 50, AH Gold 50, marcinjaro 49 Low scores - Julian 4, Scone1 5, danG 5 Average score - 24.3 Three acts in the final have two songs and Bananarama are the first of them to appear. Venus had been part of their live set for a few years and when they finally had the idea of recording a dance version, their producers, Steven Jolley and Tony Swain, weren't keen so they turned to Stock, Aitken and Waterman. The result was a US number 1 single. It finishes 147 points ahead of Shocking Blue's original version.
  14. 31. Lady Gaga - Judas 1033pts Writers - Lady Gaga, RedOne Top scores - deepinside 50, Scene 46, Jade 44, musicfan97 44 Low scores - King Rollo 1, Uls2000 2, Chez Wombat 2 Average score - 24 From 2011, Judas was the second single to be taken from Lady Gaga's second album 'Born This Way', giving her an eighth top 10 single.
  15. 32. The Veronicas - Untouched 1030pts Writers - Toby Gad, Jessica Origliasso, Lisa Origliasso Top scores - jszmiles 48, Leonardo 47, GreyAsh 46 Low scores - jimwatts 1, Jaz13music 2, Liamski689 3, King Rollo 3, deepinside 3 Average score - 23.9 This was the first UK hit for the Australian twin sisters, spending five weeks in the top 10. They went on to have two more top 40 hits, including another number 8, 'You Ruin Me', which scored ten points in the first round.
  16. Round 1: 27 The Rules, Dog, That Matters To Me Round 2: 30 EMF, Charlie Rich 3 in 10: 3 Electric Avenue, I Don't Wanna Dance, Living On The Frontline
  17. Nik Kershaw's song for the first live show would have been the top 10 hit 'Don Quixote'.
  18. Great to see Great Britain win three gold medals in half an hour today at the World Indoor Championships. Georgia Hunter Bell, Molly Caudery and Keely Hodgkinson have added to Josh Kerr's gold medal from yesterday.
  19. I did have the same idea as Dandy for that last round and might have sent my favourite track from Nik Kershaw's most recent album from 2020 which I think is his best album since his first two as I didn't think he stood a chance of being in the top 3 but I decided just to go with I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me as his swansong.
  20. I think that as we could only pick five songs, a few artists might not have scored any points in that round.
  21. I didn't think Nik Kershaw would get very far so my plan was just to front load with The Riddle, Wouldn't It Be Good and I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me but as The Riddle did so well in round 1 and the points were carried over to round 2, I was able to sneak in an album track, Gone To Pieces. As that was also quite well received, I went with Dancing Girls as my bop. After my album track, You Might, I took a bit of a risk with Sometimes but wanted to include something that wasn't from Nik's first two albums. I was then able to finish with two of Nik's best known songs so I feel I took him as far as I could. My one mistake was maybe I should have started with Wouldn't It Be Good and kept The Riddle for the battleground round. I'm pleased that a few people who weren't familiar with his music liked some of the songs I submitted. For anyone who doesn't know, Nik wrote the number 1 single 'The One And Only' for Chesney Hawkes.
  22. 33. McAlmont & Butler - Yes 1016pts Writers - David McAlmont, Bernard Butler Top scores - DarrenJ77 50, rio309 50, Jaz13music 50, chartjack2 50, Uls2000 50, LKF 50 Low scores - jszmiles 2, chrissmith276 2, Bror 2 Average score - 23.6 This has more 50 point scores than any other song in the final but gets dragged down by sixteen voters putting it in their bottom ten. David McAlmont and Bernard Butler had come together after leaving their bands, Thieves and Suede, respectively. They had three more top 40 hits.
  23. 34. Radiohead - Karma Police 1011pts Writers - Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, Philip Selway Top scores - Jester 49, rio309 49, marcinjaro 48 Low scores - Cymro87 1, Popchartfreak 1, vibe 3 Average score - 23.5 Karma Police is on the same 'OK Computer' album as 'No Surprises' which won the number 4 poll but it doesn't do as well. The award winning video was directed by Jonathan Glazer who had first pitched the concept to Marilyn Manson for one of his singles but he rejected it.
  24. 35. Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing 1005pts Writer - Mark Knopfler Top scores - Scene 50, Cymro87 49, danG 48 Low scores - AaronTM 3, Chez Wombat 3, vibe 4, Leonardo 4, Jester 4 Average score - 23.4 Sultans Of Swing was named after a jazz band that Mark Knopfler had seen perform in a near empty South London pub. It did nothing when first released in 1978 but was reissued after reaching number 4 in the US in 1979. It was the first of five top 10 singles for the London group.
  25. I've noticed !!! has been lurking in some of these rounds so I'm predicting she is behind FKA Twigs.
