My record of the week 60 years ago
17th-23rd March 1966 30. A Man Without Love - Kenneth McKellar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfURdA-KpAQ The UK have chosen a very old fashioned ballad for Eurovision and it will finish in 9th place, the country's worst placing until 1978. Coming from an opera background, he certainly puts in a capable performance of the song. 32. Heartaches - Vince Hill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0czFLPVCqj4 Vince Hill covers a song from 1931 and keeps to that pre-war sort of sound. 35. Elusive Butterfly - Val Doonican https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FF0m-580B4 We have two versions of this song and Val does a good job with the mid-tempo ballad, aided by backing singers and some strings. 38. I Met A Girl - The Shadows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4SJEMZE140 Another single with vocals from them and there's a country twang to it. They come up with some good vocal harmonies. 39. The Sound Of Silence - The Bachelors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hFAJtBHtLI This is much better from the Bachelors as they are covering a contemporary song this time but obviously inferior to the original version by Simon & Garfunkel who will appear soon with a different track. It will go all the way to number 3, giving the group their biggest hit since 1964. Record of the week : 21. Elusive Butterfly - Bob Lind The original version recorded by its writer charts in the same week at Val Doonican's rival cover and is preferable. There's a wistful sound to his vocal and the strings are gorgeous with the guitar and drums keeping up the rhythm. The single will spend two weeks at number 5, the same position that Val's version will peak at. Bob Lind is 83 now and released a new album just two months ago.

44. Shocking Blue - Venus 899pts Writer - Robbie van Leeuwen Top scores - deepinside 47, Jaz13music 44, Scene 44 Low scores - Mango 2, Liamski689 2, ElectroBoy 3 Jester 3 Average score - 20.9 There was a poll within a poll as we were also deciding what our favourite version of Venus is and Bananarama have won as Shocking Blue appear first. The original was a hit for the Dutch group in 1970 and reached number 1 in several countries, including the US. The follow-up single, 'Mighty Joe', missed the top 40.

Rolloland would also like to thank the two people who put that unofficial video onto youtube. I don't think I've seen scenes from a film being used so effectively to illustrate a song that has nothing to do with the film. John Hurt, Richard Burton and Gregor Fisher were the actors I recognised in it. I did think of linking to the lyric video instead as I thought the 1984 video might distract from the music but it looks like I made the right decision. I think many of you just listen to the Spotify playlist so maybe a video doesn't make much difference.

PopMaster & Ten To The Top II
Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 39 💥 I'm on a roll this evening after that song contest win! I actually considered the wonderful 'Stay With Me Till Dawn' for a song from a year ending in 9 but thought it wouldn't be right entering a top 20 hit. 3 in 10: 3 Venus, Cruel Summer, Robert De Niro's Waiting

Lottery: 🪷The Results🪷
Collapse/Collide is actually the first track in a five song suite that makes up Part 2 of the album Controlling Crowds Parts 1-3. The word "collide" continues on a loop for the first two and a half minutes of the next track, 'Clones', so I would recommend listening to the whole album to hear the song in its context. 'Bullets', which I entered to BJSC 99, is the second track on Part 1 of the same album which is also a five song suite.

Lottery: 🪷The Results🪷
Well, I never thought picking the number 17 would lead to me winning a BJSC spin-off! This is Rolloland's first ever win. 😀 Thanks to Leww for coming up with the idea for the theme and pushing me past the line with the final vote and thanks to everyone else who voted for Collapse/Collide. It's great to win with such a stunning song, I placed it at number 136 in my all-time top 1000. And thanks to NocheLuna for hosting the contest.
