dandy* ranks the UK #1 singles of 1979
Video Killed The Radio Star is fabulous. The singles by Buggles, Gary Numan and New Musik really got me interested in synth pop in 1979 and 1980 before Ultravox, Depeche Mode and OMD came along behind them. Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick is another good one. I also like Ian Dury's other two top 10 hits, What A Waste and Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3. All of them had his witty, quirky lyrics.

43. Madonna - Human Nature 147pts Writers - Madonna, Dave Hall, Shawn McKenzie, Kevin McKenzie, Michael Deering Top points - detonate 25, vibe 24, ...ready for it 24 Madonna is a regular in these polls but this is her only appearance this year as only one of her many top 10 singles peaked at number 8. Human Nature was an answer song to the criticism she had received to her 'Erotica' album and her lewd coffee table book. The song was written with Dave Hall, the other three names shown here are the writers of the sampled track, 'What You Need' by Main Source.

46. Depeche Mode - In Your Room 131pts Writer - Martin Gore Top points - King Rollo 22, Julian 20, dandy* 20 Like the Stone Roses, Depeche Mode will just have one song in the final as In Your Room drops out. It was the fourth single to be taken from 'Songs Of Faith And Devotion'. My own score of 22 is based on the album version. The song was remixed for the single release and I think this version lacks the punch and scale of the original recording.
