  1. I wasn't expecting to hear my BJSC entry by Prefab Sprout being sampled on that song by Out Of Order when I listened to it.
  2. Winter was a good discovery, very calming.
  3. I wasn't sure who would have sent Peter Gabriel, great song choice, Julian.
  4. Not a surprise that Jester was behind Pulp.
  5. Round 1: 30 B*Witched, Still Round 2: 36 Everybody (I knew Backstreet's Back but not the word before it) 3 in 10: 1 Dreams (I always forget her songs)
  6. 49 points The Pogues and The Dubliners - The Irish Rover Portishead - All Mine Portishead had five top 40 hits from 1994 to 1998 and this was the only one to reach the top 10. The Irish Rover goes back to the 19th Century with the combined talents of The Pogues and The Dubliners updating it in 1987, 20 years after the latter group had reached number 7 with 'Seven Drunken Nights'.
  7. 48 points Shed Seven - Going For Gold Shed Seven had fifteen top 40 hits from 1994 to 2003 but this was the only one to reach the top 10.
  8. 47 points Layo & Bushwacka! - Love Story (vs. Finally) Layo and Bushwacka! were British DJs Layo Paskin and Matthew Benjamin. This single from 2003 featured samples from Nina Simone, Devo and The Kings Of Tomorrow.
  9. 46 points Miley Cyrus featuring Dua Lipa - Prisoner Samantha Fox - Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry Pink - Walk Me Home In 1987, this Stock, Aitken and Waterman written song gave Samantha Fox her third and final top 10 hit. Four years later, Don't Cry was a fifth top 10 single for Guns N' Roses. Pink still has one song left.
  10. 27th January - 2nd February 1966 17. Can You Please Crawl Out Of Your Window - Bob Dylan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUeyZs9LV6Y Bob has a full band behind him on this one so musically it's a bit broader than I would expect from him. The lyrics are not easy to interpret but I think the subject of the song has a partner who exerts too much control over her. 34. Second Hand Rose - Barbra Streisand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCtrcAp3TEY Barbra's only hit in the 1960s is a version of a Fanny Brice song from 1921 which she does in the same music hall style from that era. It will go on to be used in her 1968 film, 'Funny Girl'. 35. Recovery - Fontella Bass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8mGiTwLFYs Not as engaging as 'Rescue Me' but she sings it well, aided by backing vocalists and the brass section. 36. Attack - The Toys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4otDkwwNryo The Toys reach some high notes on this follow-up to 'A Lover's Concerto'. Quite an enjoyable listen. 37. Breakin' Up Is Breakin' My Heart - Roy Orbison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYksZ_GGHLk A faster pace to this than most of his songs and it's OK but not one of his best. 39. Don't Make Me Over - The Swinging Blue Jeans https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNXkisV-1Sk A Bacharach & David song first recorded by Dionne Warwick. There's a good package here with the vocals, melody and string arrangement all coming together nicely. It will be the last of their five top 40 hits. They are still going but with none of the original members. 40. Tchaikovsky One - Second City Sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NCe7cl7cis A piano led instrumental with some vocal 'aaahs' coming in towards the end. It's a bit of a curiosity but a welcome addition to the top 40. Record of the week : 38. These Boots Are Made For Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra By a large margin, this takes the award. It's that descending double bass line that really makes it stand out along with the sassy vocal from Nancy and the brass instrumental parts. The single will spend four weeks at number 1.
  11. I think Space Art will do well. They got a good reaction at the listenthrough.
  12. Round 1: 36 Spanish Round 2: 33 Maroon 5 3 in 10: 3 Club Tropicana, Wham Rap, The Edge Of Heaven
  13. 45 points The Beach Boys - Heroes And Villains Backstreet Boys - The Call Eternal - Just A Step From Heaven Sum 41 - Fat Lip Brian Wilson spent about 30 days in the studio trying to record this song for the 'Smiley Smile' album but eventually discarded everything and started again with this simpler arrangement which was put out as a single. The album was never completed. I'm more familiar with Brian's 2004 version with a new band when he recorded the whole album as closely as he could to what it would have sounded like in 1967. Eternal have three number 8 singles but 'Just A Step From Heaven' was the only one to receive votes. The Backstreet Boys depart after the third of their songs goes out.
  14. 44 points A-ha - I've Been Losing You Bellini - Samba De Janeiro Birdy - Wings Dr. Dre featuring Eminem and Skylar Grey - I Need A Doctor Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home A-Ha and Fine Young Cannibals both lose the second of their two number 8 singles with all four of them charting from 1985 to 1986. It's a bad day for Eminem who makes a second appearance.
  15. 43 points Dionne Warwick - Do You Know The Way To San Jose Written by Bacharach and David, this was the second of four top 10 hits for Dionne Warwick. It won her a Grammy award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
  16. 42 points Eminem - The Way I Am Charli XCX featuring Rita Ora - Doing It Pet Shop Boys - Se a vida é (That's The Way Life Is) The Pet Shop Boys have five number 8 singles of which three received votes and this is the first one to drop out. It was the second single taken from their 1996 album 'Bilingual'. In 2000, 'The Way I Am' was sandwiched by two number 1 singles for Eminem, 'The Real Slim Shady' and 'Stan'. Charli XCX has one song still to come.
  17. Tears For Fears - Mad World Abba - The Day Before You Came Ultravox - Reap The Wild Wind Chicago - Hard To Say I'm Sorry Mari Wilson - Just What I Always Wanted Kid Creole just misses out Tie-break: Save A Prayer And here's Simon Cowell as Wonderdog being interviewed:
  18. I have voted now. I enjoyed the diversity of genres that people came up with.
  19. West Ham United 1-1 Sunderland Burnley 1-2 Tottenham Fulham 2-2 Brighton Manchester City 2-0 Wolves Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool Brentford 3-1 Nottingham Forest Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United Everton 1-1 Leeds United
  20. Please don't leave us, you are one of a kind.
  21. 41 points Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Catch You Maroon 5 - One More Night Maxine Nightingale - Right Back Where We Started From Unkle featuring Ian Brown - Be There This is the only top 30 single by the British alternative group, if you can call them a group, as it's really just James Lavelle and whichever musicians he is working with at any time. I haven't heard the single version for a while as it's just an instrumental on the 'Psyence Fiction' album with a different title, 'Unreal'. Ian Brown is part of this poll as well with his band, the Stone Roses. Right Back Where We Started From was one of two top 20 hits for the British singer Maxine Nightingale in the mid 70s.
  22. 40 points Christina Aguilera - Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) Blancmange - Don't Tell Me Cast - Sandstorm Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only Mr. President - Coco Jamboo Sugababes - Caught In A Moment From 1984, this was the last of three top 10 hits for Blancmange. Sheena Easton's theme to the 1981 James Bond film is here along with the only top 40 single by the German group Mr. President. Sandstorm was the first of six consecutive top 10 hits for Cast. Sugababes lose the last of their three songs.
  23. 39 points Mabel featuring Kojo Funds - Finders Keepers Run DMC - Walk This Way Mark Ronson featuring Lily Allen - Oh My God Reverend and The Makers - Heavyweight Champion Of The World Walk This Way was a 1975 single by Aerosmith which didn't reach the UK charts. Run DMC's 1986 cover featured Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from the group. A further cover by Sugababes vs. Girls Aloud took the song to number 1 in 2007. Also from that year, Heavyweight Champion Of The World was one of just two top 40 hits for Reverend and The Makers. Lily Allen has one song of her own still left in.
