  1. I didn't notice the ELO samples (from the Prologue and Epilogue of their 'Time' album) in Cher's 'Believe' at the time it came out. They are some of the swirly electronic sounds in the background, not part of the song's main beat, but I could only recognise them when I found out they were part of the song a few years ago. It's a good year for number 1 singles so I can stretch to a top 10: 1. Madonna - Frozen (I don't like many Madonna singles but this would be in my top 2, with Like A Prayer) 2. Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next 3. Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds - 3 Lions '98 4. Various Artists - Perfect Day 5. Spice Girls - Viva Forever 6. Cornershop - Brimful Of Asha (Norman Cook Remix) 7. Run DMC vs. Jason Nevins - It's Like That 8. The Tamperer featuring Maya - Feel It 9. Aqua - Turn Back Time 10. Cher - Believe
  2. Well done John on a double 39. Round 1: 33 Smooth, Lisa Stansfield Round 2: 24 The year, Identity, John Lydon (should have remembered his real name) Tie-break: 2 out of 4 3 in 10: 2 Should I Stay Or Should I Go, Rock The Casbah
  3. 2nd - 8th December 1965 32. To Whom It Concerns - Chris Andrews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFNJVPJx4PE Chris Andrews' follow-up to his top 3 debut will reach number 13. It has a similar sound with the jovial brass section and plenty of personality in his vocal. 34. Till The End Of The Day - The Kinks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQw7wLvJgfM Another good one from the Kinks with their signature guitar sound and a fast paced drum rhythm at the end. 38. My Ship Is Coming In - The Walker Brothers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u96SurBlgbM Two out of two ROTW awards so far for the Walker Brothers and this was close to making it three. It has that same luxuriant production and another fine vocal from Scott. 39. The War Lord - The Shadows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDAwSnRJ6eY The group's version of the theme to a film of the same name. It's the same few notes repeated throughout most of the two minutes so a bit disappointing. Record of the week: 33. Rescue Me - Fontella Bass I'm choosing this soul classic from the American singer. She puts in a great vocal here, supported by the backing singers coming out of the right hand speaker (one of which is Minnie Riperton). We also have future members of Earth Wind & Fire on drums and bass. The single will spend three weeks at number 11 and, having co-written the song, it will take Fontella several years of legal battles to claim any royalties for it.
  4. AFC Bournemouth 2-1 Everton Fulham 1-2 Manchester City Newcastle United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur Arsenal 3-0 Brentford Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Aston Villa Burnley 0-1 Crystal Palace Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-1 Nottingham Forest Leeds United 1-3 Chelsea Liverpool 2-0 Sunderland Manchester United 2-0 West Ham United
  5. I've managed to get it to work on a different browser. Round 1: 36 Don't Be Stupid Round 2: 24 Sugar Me, the year, Chick, This Old Heart Of Mine Only got as far as 'Sugar' for Lynsey DePaul and thought of 'Crazy Stupid Love' for Charlotte Church but, of course, that's a Cheryl song. 3 in 10: 3 My Camera Never Lies, Now Those Days Are Gone, New Beginning (Mamba Seyra)
  6. I had a hunt around and found something to enter.
  7. Brentford 2-0 Burnley Manchester City 3-0 Leeds United Sunderland 1-1 AFC Bournemouth Everton 1-1 Newcastle United Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Fulham Crystal Palace 2-1 Manchester United Aston Villa 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers Nottingham Forest 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion West Ham United 1-2 Liverpool Chelsea 1-2 Arsenal
  8. I can't get the podcast to play Thursday's and Friday's editions. I just get that purple circle spinning around. I'll try again on Monday.
  9. Round 1: 36 The year (one year out) Round 2: 36 The year (one year out) Those pesky years catching me out again. 3 in 10: 1 Are You Gonna Go My Way
  10. Yesterday's wasn't on the podcast until today. Well done both on getting those double 39s. Monday: Round 1: 36 The year (one year out) Round 2: 36 The year (one year out) 3 in 10: 3 I Don't Like Mondays, Rat Trap, Banana Republic Tuesday: Round 1: 24 Aretha Franklin, Mink DeVille, Fly Round 2: 39 💥 3 in 10: 3 Mirrors, Cry Me A River, Sexyback
  11. 25th November - 1st December 1965 37. Maria - PJ Proby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX1wDV3ENF8 PJ Proby tackles one of the songs from West Side Story and does it justice but I prefer his more pop oriented singles. 39. How Can You Tell - Sandie Shaw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruasaNYNI2E A forgettable tune with vocals that were not up to her usual high standard. After starting with five top 10 hits, this one will miss the top 20. Record of the week : 38. Walk Hand In Hand - Gerry and The Pacemakers Nothing stands out but this was the best one as it has a rousing chorus which did stick in my head after listening to the song earlier and Gerry sings it very well. Three different versions by Jimmy Parkinson, Ronnie Carroll and Tony Martin were UK chart hits in 1956. This will be the last of the group's nine top 40 singles, peaking at number 29.
  12. Ultravox - The Voice Abba - One Of Us Jon And Vangelis - I'll Find My Way Home Queen And David Bowie - Under Pressure Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You No room for Genesis or Kim Wilde
  13. Great to see Twilight at the top of that group. It's more representative of the synth pop sound of the 'Time' album than the first single 'Hold On Tight'. Joan Of Arc and Favourite Shirts would make up the rest of my top 3.
  14. I see Fyfe has now started up his own 24 radio station called 'The Stream'. I'm not aware of any other artist doing something like this before. THE STREAM IS HERE !!! What is The Stream? The Stream is a never-ending, ever-changing, constantly evolving lighthouse transmission, drawn from the ever-growing archive of my life in sound. Sketches of songs, productions-in-progress, improvisations, melodies in search of lyrics, chords in search of context, sounds in search of home, middle-of-the-night mumbles, renegade cartoon themes, choral & orchestral compositions, morning coffee-walk insights, late-night epiphanies, dreambeats, textures, musical zoomies, characters, spontaneous outpourings, searchings, findings, playings .. Stretching from as far back as the 1980s to the very present day & beyond .. recordings both unreleased, released & to be released. A living, breathing album, in the form of a radio station, broadcasting 24/7 .. with the running order curated by Chance. The Stream is where ideas go to swim. So come dive in .. stay as long as you like .. listen as you long as you stay .. all are welcome here, always! Yours delightedly, Fyfe Dangerfield Channels May Change founder With especial thanks to The Stream's co-creators, Channels May Change Vision Shepherd Gavin Bush, and bastions of independent broadcasting, Radiocult. So come take a dip at www.channelsmaychange.com/thestream
  15. Pathetic batting by England in the second innings with each batsman trying to drive the ball outside off stump before playing himself in. They only batted for 68 overs in the match and will have to do much better in the second test. Fantastic innings by Travis Head to win the match.
  16. Burnley 0-2 Chelsea Bournemouth 2-1 West Ham United Brighton 2-1 Brentford Fulham 1-0 Sunderland Liverpool 2-0 Nottingham Forest Wolves 0-1 Crystal Palace Newcastle United 1-2 Manchester City Leeds United 1-1 Aston Villa Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham Manchester United 2-1 Everton
  17. Round 1: 27 George Michael, the year, Something Better Change Round 2: 39 💥 3 in 10: 3 Get Off Of My Cloud, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Undercover Of The Night
  18. I've just watched the highlights. There's lots of pace and bounce in that pitch. England's more aggressive batting seems to have come off as they were at least able to score more runs in between each wicket than Australia were. Great bowling by Mitchell Starc and Ben Stokes in particular.
  19. Round 1: 30 The year, Clown, Groove Round 2: 33 Young Guns (should have got that but thought it was Bad Boys) 3 in 10: 3 Hello, Chasing Pavements, Someone Like You
  20. Round 1: 30 All Saints, Go, Girl Round 2: 36 Peter Frampton 3 in 10: 3 A Good Year For The Roses, Oliver's Army, I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down
  21. I had to listen to this ELOI person out of curiosity. Interesting, but I'll stick with ELO, thanks.
  22. Yes, round 1 was tough, 21 for me as well. Round 1: 21 Oasis, Oh Patti (love that song but couldn't think of that part of the title), Roxy Music, Ronny Laine Round 2: 36 Heaven 3 in 10: 3 The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, No Regrets, Make It Easy On Yourself
  23. Well done Gooddelta, 'These Are The Things' was a good discovery which I put 2nd in my own vote. I didn't know any of the entries here. Thanks to all who gave points to Wallflower. I was aware that It Bites had turned to prog rock eventually after their more pop oriented top 10 hit, Calling All The Heroes, but I hadn't got round to listening to their later albums. I had a quick listen to their albums from 2008 and 2012 and chose Wallflower as the song that I thought might represent them best. Thanks to Addy for another professional hosting job.
  24. 18th - 24th November 1965 28. Is It Really Over - Jim Reeves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLyAS-cceGM Another ballad in his usual style with stately orchestration. 34. Turquoise - Donovan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT0xkUbljKU A folk style ballad about Joan Baez which is spoilt by a very high pitched harmonica which was too piercing for my ears to enjoy the rest of the song. After two number 4s, this will be a miss, only reaching number 30. 37. The River (Le Colline Sono In Fioro) - Ken Dodd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X74RolsIPI There's no doubt he sings this well but it's one for the grandparents' Christmas present only. Following up his chart topper, it will make its way to number 3. 38. Let's Hang On - The Four Seasons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YzlwyAgefE One of this group's best known songs, the backing vocals combine well with Frankie Valli's falsetto and it has that killer chorus. Record of the week: 39. Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season) - The Byrds It's a close call between this one and 'Let's Hang On' but the lyrics, most of which are lifted form the book of Ecclesiastes, are a bit deeper, with a plea for peace amidst the escalation of the Vietnam War. There's also that characteristic jangly guitar sound. The song's writer, Pete Seeger, recorded it himself but the first version to be released was by The Limeliters in 1962. The Byrds' cover will be a US number 1 but only get to number 26 in the UK.
  25. Thanks to the few who gave points to It Bites so far, especially AllStarBySmashMouth for the 12. Without that, they would be in bottom place.
