  1. We all probably don't know if it's good or bad to be 4th to 10th in somebody's vote. If you are not, you could have have some top 3 scores or maybe you don't have any points at all.
  2. I'm hoping one of the less well known artists win this. I don't think my own entry is likely to be a contender.
  3. Well done on the 39s, John. I forgot about this yesterday. Tuesday: Round 1: 33 Ross, When You Believe Round 2: 36 Lisa Stansfield 3 in 10: 3 We Close Our Eyes, King Of Wishful Thinking, Call Me Today: Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 33 The year, Chic 3 in 10: 3 Ceremony, Everything's Gone Green, Round And Round
  4. 21st - 27th October 1965 26. Yesterday - Matt Monro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQhC3bMMLmw There's some nice orchestration but this is a pale shadow of the original. Matt Monro will have one more top 40 hit but we will have to wait another eight years for it. 34. I Love You, Yes I Do - The Merseybeats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jp84gEbny1k A song that goes as far back as 1947, this version is OK but the lead singer's vocal gets a bit strained during the louder parts. 35. When I Get Home - The Searchers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKJhCLjzUsA They're going through the motions on this single which will only reach number 35. Their golden era appears to be coming to a close. Record of the week : 36. Until It's Time For You To Go - The Four Pennies This wouldn't get the award most weeks but the bar is set quite low so it's left as the winner. I liked the guitar arrangement, tempo changes and the lead singer's plaintive vocal which was supported by the other members' backing harmonies. The song was first recorded by its writer, Buffy Sainte-Marie, earlier this year and went on to be covered by many singers including Glen Campbell, Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley. The Four Pennies' version will peak at number 19.
  5. Round 1: 30 Barbara Dickson - Another Suitcase In Another Hall, Gladys Knight and The Pips Round 2: 27 Machine Gun, Angels, Rolling Stones Tie-break: 4 out of 6 3 in 10: 3 Never Ever, Black Coffee, Under The Bridge
  6. That was a great win for England against India yesterday. Many of the matches have gone into the final over with the result still unresolved so it's been a good tournament so far but a shame about the weather in Colombo.
  7. Department S - Is Vic There? REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes Hazel O'Connor - Will You The Human League - The Sound Of The Crowd
  8. RIP request: For John Lodge, can we have Gemini Dream from May 1981 which is the month we'll be covering today. It got to number 12 on the Billboard chart and was co-written by John who also shares lead vocals on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3QLFFVFpp0
  9. Nottingham Forest 1-2 Chelsea Brighton 1-1 Newcastle Burnley 1-1 Leeds Crystal Palace 1-0 Bournemouth Manchester City 2-0 Everton Sunderland 1-0 Wolves Fulham 0-2 Arsenal Tottenham 2-0 Aston Villa Liverpool 2-1 Manchester Utd West Ham 2-2 Brentford
  10. Well done gooddelta on a maximum score and thanks gasman for running this quiz.
  11. Round 1: 30 The year, Fun Fun Fun, Radar Round 2: 33 The year, Aerosmith 3 in 10: 1 Slow Hand
  12. Thanks, John, I always remember that bit in brackets. We all got 39 on round 1 today. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 39 💥 3 in 10: 3 Too Many Broken Hearts, Especially For You, Any Dream Will Do
  13. Rick Wakeman has twelve top 40 albums but no hit singles. The Black And White Mistrels had eleven top 40 albums, including three number 1s and Dream Theater have eight. If you combine Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, they have twelve top 40 albums. I don't know if any of those can be regarded as big enough names.
  14. Well done John on that double 39. Round 1: 30 The year, Arrows Round 2: 33 Tina Charles (should have got that) 3 in 10: 3 Yesterday Once More, Please Mr Postman, Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft (The Recognised Anthem Of World Contact Day)
  15. Round 1: 30 The year, Borderline (should have got that but thought it was Lucky Star) Round 2: 27 The Night, Singing In The Rain, Celine Dion 3 in 10: 3 Step Inside Love, Alfie, You've Lost That Loving Feeling
  16. 14th - 20th October 1965 22. Evil Hearted You / Still I'm Sad - The Yardbirds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4Pe3GJe2Iw / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02K9H5dwCJY Evil Hearted You is another Graham Gouldman composition and has some innovative guitar work but I prefer Still I'm Sad with its otherworldly chanting. This will be another top 3 hit for the group. 31. Yesterday Man - Chris Andrews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6N3o4TDYsI The writer of many hits for Sandie Shaw and Adam Faith now has one of his own with this breezy pop song which has a slight ska sound to it. It will go as high as number 3. 40. (I Left My Heart) In San Francisco - Tony Bennett https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysw4svDmcxc The second of three chart runs in 1965 will get this as far as number 40, the third will see the single reach its peak of number 25 at Christmas. The song was actually recorded in 1962 and is what you would expect from him, nicely sung and arranged but not my sort of thing. Record of the week : 29. Here It Comes Again - The Fortunes By a small margin, I've chosen this one. The verses are short so we're never far away from that recognisable chorus. There are some good vocal harmonies complemented by the brass instrumentation, strings and drums. Following up their number 2 hit, 'You've Got Your Troubles', it will peak at number 4.
  17. Love that Wizzard song, it got played on our Sunday 80s Synctube session last week as an RIP for their drummer. Round 1: 33 Can't Get Enough Round 2: 33 The year, Dawn Tie break: 2 out of 2 3 in 10: 2 Almaz, One Day I'll Fly Away
  18. Valentin Vacherot from Monaco, ranked at 204, wins the Shanghai Masters! He's mainly been playing Challenger events this year. I know some of the top players are tired or injured this late in the season but that's still a huge shock.
  19. Well done both of you on the 39s. Round 1: 39 💥 Round 2: 27 Music, Rihanna, Backstreet Boys 3 in 10: 2 Voodoo Chile, All Along The Watchtower
  20. Round 1: 33 En Vogue Round 2: 30 The Pasadenas, Joe Walsh 3 in 10: 3 Viva Forever, Wannabe, 2 Become 1
  21. Round 1: 36 All For Love (I answered All For One as well, the question has come up before but I still didn't remember) Round 2: 33 One Love, the year 3 in 10: 3 Walk Like An Egyptian, Eternal Flame, Hazy Shade Of Winter
  22. Well done John on the double 39. Round 1: 33 How Can I Love You More Round 2: 36 The year (one year out) 3 in 10: 3 Everywhere, Tusk, Big Love
  23. 7th - 13th October 1965 32. She Needs Love - Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J5OzKR9QvM The guitar on the intro was a promising start but it quickly turned into an average beat style song. It will be the last hit for the group before Wayne leaves to go solo. 39. Down In The Boondocks - Billy Joe Royal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M0HE0mwwFQ The singer's name made me think that this would be a country song but it sounds like something that might be given to Gene Pitney. There is a resemblance to '24 Hours To Tulsa'. Record of the week : 31. It's Good News Week - Hedgehoppers Anonymous This is the best of today's three. Written and produced by Jonathan King, it's a commentary on the media only reporting bad news and the desire to hear to some good news now and then. The band members were all RAF personnel. This will be their only top 40 hit, peaking at number 5.
  24. Round 1: 30 Diana Ross, Phantom Planet Round 2: 36 River 3 in 10: 2 The Changing Man, You Do Something To Me
  25. The Teardrop Explodes - Reward Landscape - Einstein A-Go-Go Dave Stewart With Colin Blunstone - What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted The Jacksons - Can You Feel It Visage - Mind Of A Toy Tie-break: Vienna
