Izhar Ashdot is probably the closest thing to a rock-star Israel has, everyone knows atleast one song by him, regardless of age. The lyrics are based on stories and reports told by different Israeli soldiers. These soldiers are part of an organization called Breaking The Silence, a group of ex-soldiers who want to end the occupation of Palestinian land. When Ashdot went to perform at one of the biggest radio stations in 2012, Galatz, the station commander turned the song away, despite being the one to invite him in the first place – as a consolidation price he was allowed to perform another of his songs. In the aftermath, Galatz, realised the following statement: “There is no room at Galatz for a song that degrades and condemns those who have sacrificed their lives for the fatherland”. After all, the radio station was a station for soldiers and by soldiers, not at all a place where one could criticise those who protected the nation. This version was released 8 years ago, and unfortunately the song still is current with the attacks and counter attacks in Gaza. the West Bank and Lebanon.

Gonna try an keep this brief. The reason I did not allow each pair to vote for each other boils down to this: I did not know how each pair would select their songs. a) Did one person send a list of songs with similarites to the other so he/she/they could chose from that? b) Did they go hunting for songs together, find a bunch of songs that sounded similar and chose their favorites from that? c) Did they share their own potentials with each other and found from their own lists two songs that shared similarities? a and b would beg the question: How much is your song my song? I felt that if people went down either of these routes it would be kinda like voting for your own song. Which is not allowed. Option C would have been a good argument for allowing pairs to vote for each other. I guess I could have forced option C (or a variation of that) when I assigned the partners, but idk if that would have gone down well with everyone/been to dictatorial. I lowkey also did not want a Greece/Cyprus ESC situation where each pair gave each other 12 points/high scores... that would have been a bit boring. A very good point - Lets hope someone else wants to host another edition of this in the future!
