  1. heres the entire interview:

Go, Go JoJo: Singer to perform at Dogwood FestivalBy Brian Dukes

    Staff writer

At the age of 13, JoJo became the youngest solo artist to land a No. 1 single on the Billboard charts.

She has performed for the president — twice.

But she doesn’t have her driver’s license yet

JoJo, who is 16, boasts a lengthy list of singing and acting accomplishments, and she shows no signs of slowing down. The pop star will take the stage at Festival Park Saturday at 8:30 p.m. as part of the festival’s 25th anniversary.

“I like to have fun and connect with the audience,” she said in a phone interview. “I love to include them as much as possible. I’m really looking forward to it.”

At the age of 5, JoJo, born Joanna Levesque, put her own spin on classic nursery rhymes. She signed her first major record deal at 12, and her self-titled 2004 debut went multi-platinum. She also has starred in the films “Aquamarine” with Emma Roberts and in “RV” with Robin Williams.

Weekender caught up with the young superstar during a break on her tour where she is promoting her latest album, “The High Road.”

Weekender: What’s the last year been like for you?

JoJo: It’s been very busy since my album came out. I’m getting ready to go to England on tour, and I’m also trying to get schoolwork done.

Weekender: What grade are you in now, and how do you fit school into your life?

JoJo: I’m starting my junior year. I stopped going to public school in seventh grade, so I’ve never been to a real high school. I’ve been best friends with the same girl for eight years, so I get to live out high school through her.

Weekender: You’ve had so much success so early in your life, where do you go from here?

JoJo: There’s so much more to do. I want to win a Grammy, and write and produce my next album. I want to really do something that will touch people. I’m never satisfied with where I am. I’m always thankful for where I am, but I’m always putting my mind to the next goal.

Weekender: Who are some of your musical influences?

JoJo: I grew up listening to a lot of soul music like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and George Benson. As I got older I started listening to D’Angelo, Musiq Soulchild, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell.

Weekender: What was the first album you ever bought?

JoJo: I think it was George Benson’s Greatest Hits when I was 8 years old. I spent my allowance on it.

Weekender: How do you approach writing?

JoJo: I keep a diary while I’m on the road and fill the pages with things that come along. I also look up to artists like Jill Scott and Beyoncé, who are great writers and performers.

Weekender: Beyoncé has branched into acting, like yourself. How does that compare to performing live?

JoJo: With acting, you only get to be one character, but with a live performance you can be a different character with each song. It’s a real creative zone for me.

Weekender: What future projects do you have?

JoJo: Right now I’m focusing on school. I’m also working on getting my license in a few months and reading a few scripts for movie projects.

Weekender: Do you already have a car picked out?

JoJo: Yes, a 5 Series BMW. I think it’ll be safe, and my mom will prefer it over a Corvette.
